Wow over 100 singles shifted 600+k in the 80's compared to just 26 in the 00's so far!
and there were 160 singles in the 1980s that sold 500,000+ - Alan Jones reported this when the 1980s chart was printed in 1990.

I'm not sure how accurate the actual figures in the chart above are, as Dave B says the figures were calculated by someone else. Black Box (at #20) was reported to have sold 849,000 copies at the end of 1989, in this chart they are on 973,850, which may be the figure that was calculated for the all time top 100 chart in 2002 and will include sales into 1990 and beyond that too. Similarly, Jive Bunny (at #21) was reported to have sold about 820,000 up to the end of 1989 - here it has gained an extra 120,000 sales, again from the 2002 all time list. I think the compilers of the 2002 list revised some historic sales and those sales have been used here. Some sales here are accurate though so there may have been a bit of tweaking to fit guessed sales around known sales. But it is likely the top 100 sold 600,000+ copies.

Comparing sales here to the best sellers for the 1990s, there were 91 records in the 1990s that sold 600,000+ with the top 46 selling 800,000, 32 selling 900,000+ and 25 passing the 1 million sales mark - of which only 11 did in the 1980s. In the 1980s those 11 million sellers were all from 1981 to 1985 (6 from 1984 alone), in the 1990s million sellers were from 1991 to 1999 but mostly from 1994 onwards.

Since the 1980s charts were compiled Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor and Blue Monday by New Order have passed a million (the former doing so last year, the latter in the mid 90s) and from the 1990s charts, Wonderwall by Oasis and Torn by Natalie Imbruglia (both #2 hits) have passed a million sales. Both had been close to a million sales by the end of 1999.

I don't think anyone had access to Top 200s back in the 80s.

Don't think Holiday passed 500,000+ until 1991 (but I could be wrong). Plus in 1989, only two singles passed half million mark. I think Like A Prayer passed the half million mark since, but not in 1989.

Saving All My Love For You probably sold 500,000+, but I'm not sure about the others.

Anyone else know?

It's UK's biggest selling 12" single
it peaked at #3 not #8.

Blue Monday sold about 400,000 to 450,000 in 1983 alone when it reached #9, it then sold 170,000 when remixed and issued as a 7" single in 1988 where it peaked at #3 and in between those years it was an ever present on the top 200 weekly charts selling small but consistent amounts of usually several hundred copies per week though it did continue to sell in the low thousands most weeks in 1984.

all the top 200s from 1983 onwards (to 1994) are held in the public reference library at the BPI in County Hall, London. The chart reports available include the full top 200 for each week plus "starred out" (ie excluded) songs listed in their proper sales place, chart panel sales for each record that week and total chart panel sales for each record plus a breakdown of sales by format. This is for both singles and albums.

Holiday was certified Gold (for 500,000 shipments) in 1985. My guess is that it sold 200,000 in 1984 and perhaps the same or slightly more in 1985. With back catalogue sales it may have reached 500,000 in the 80s but it could have sold just under that amount.

Saving All My Love For You sold about 450,000 in 1985 so I'd imagine that it eventually reached 500,000. Like Holiday it too was certified Gold for 500,000 shipments.

Thanks for the information Rob thumbup.gif Do you know if I've missed any other 500,000+ sellers? I've heard Bangles - Eternal Flame was the 161st biggest seller of the 80s and was the biggest non half million seller?

Tiffany-i think we're alone now 535,000

Eternal Flame sold 498,000 copies - it was Alan Jones who mentioned this at the same time that he mentioned the top 160 had all passed 500,000 sales and Eternal Flame was at #161 for the decade.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any other records that may have sold 500,000 but I'll have a look around what I've got, sales wise, and see if I can find anything else...

some of the sales here are definitely too high but I have those same sales as you have - they were guesstimates made by a poster at Haven a couple of years ago.

Eternal Flame sold 498,000 copies which would put Too Many Broken Hearts on lower sales too. The Tiffany and Glenn Medeiros sales are also guesstimates but I don't know how accurate they are. I'd imagine they are probably close as both records were certified Gold for shipments of over 500,000 each.

Posted by: jaybird Mar 23 2009, 07:58 PM

Theres a few others 2 that may be 500,000 copies:
Thompson twins-Hold me now
Queen-i want to break free
Yazoo-only you
Belinda carlisle-heaven is a place on earth.
Tina turner-whats love got to do with it.
Kate robbins-more than in love
Dionne warwick-heartbreaker.
Kids from fame-starmaker

I was shocked to find that "Stay" by Shakespears Sister did not make the top 100 biggest sellers of the 90s even though it peaked at #1 for eight weeks back in 1992, so does anybody know how many copies it sold and also what position it would come in the top 200 sellers of the 90s. Thanks.

Yeah i know single sales were quite low in 92 but its just hard to believe that a song that stayed at no.1 for 2 months did not make the list...bizarre.

Posted by: jaybird Apr 3 2009, 10:37 PM

I think it sold about 501,000 copies or summit.

Posted by: zeus555 Apr 4 2009, 02:27 PM

'Stay' was the 4th Best Seller of 1992. Despite 8 Weeks at No.1, it only sold
around 490,000 copies!

Posted by: jaybird Apr 4 2009, 09:32 PM

Is that it? wow? Does anyone know the sales of the bangles walk like an egyptian?

Posted by: zeus555 Apr 5 2009, 12:48 PM

'Walk Like An Egyptian' reached No.3 in 1986. It was the 23rd Best Seller of that Year - around 390,000 Sales.
'Stay' by Shakespears Sister, would only have been the 13th Best Seller of 1986, had it been a Hit that
Year. And had The Bangles Hit been a 1992 Single, it would have been the 9th Best Seller of 1992.

Does anyone have the sales for the top 40 singles of every 80's year? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: zeus555 Apr 8 2009, 06:02 PM

The OCC have the Top 50 Singles of each Year of the 1980's
- with all their estimated and/or announced Sales. However, I
don't know what they plan to do with them. All I know is that
they were compiled for them - at their request - in July 2008.
No doubt, The OCC will use them - for some purpose - one day.
A Top 300 of The 1980's was created from the Year End Top 50's.

Posted by: jaybird Apr 8 2009, 07:37 PM

Do you know if the top 300 is available anywhere on the web or on here? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: zeus555 Apr 8 2009, 07:46 PM

No - I'm afraid that The OCC have the Top 300 of the 1980's, & they will decide when/if we can
see it. (Or part of it). The Top 400 of the 1970's is almost finished too. I hear.
As is the Top 250 of the 1960's. wink.gif

Self Control was the 30th best seller of 1984 in the year end chart published at the time. I can only guess at the sale but it must be over 300,000.

Posted by: jaybird Apr 13 2009, 09:02 AM

I know cyndi laupers girls just want to have fun sold 380,000 copies and that was below that so maybe it was 390,000 copies.

Posted by: jaybird Apr 19 2009, 08:18 PM

Back to the 80's-I think saving all my love for you did sell over 500,000 cos it sold more than dead or alives you spin me round which sold just over 500,000.Ashford and simpsons solid also sold more than dead or alive which should put it in the top 160 of the 80's.

Posted by: jaybird Apr 21 2009, 02:32 PM

Does anyone have tina turners overall uk singles sales?

Posted by: zeus555 Apr 21 2009, 05:35 PM

In my Top 300 UK Singles of the 1980's List, I have 'Save Your Love' at No.32 - 760,000.
I have 'Solid' at No.169 - 482,000. I have 'You Spin Me Round' at No.179 - 470,000.

I'm sure that any of us, who tried to estimate a Top 300 of the 1980's, would come up with
Lists that have different places for many Hits - and different estimated Sales.

Posted by: jaybird Apr 21 2009, 08:07 PM

Isnt abbas one of us in the top 160?

Posted by: zeus555 Apr 21 2009, 10:08 PM

'One Of Us' is at No.170 in my Top 300 - 480,000 Sales. I was going to estimate 520,000 Sales
- which would have had it in 144th place. However, I decided to go for the lower figure.

Were download sales combined in the 80's cos madonnas into the groove is listed as selling over 800,000 copies but on some sites only as 760,000 copies?

Posted by: DanChartFan May 9 2009, 10:40 AM

Downloads in the 80s? The computers of those days would have taken about a week to download a short music file. And they'd have sounded awful on basic 80s computer speakers.

Posted by: FMbassador11 May 9 2009, 10:45 AM

^I think he means were the d/ls of 'Into The Groove' in this era counted in the Best Selling Singles of '80s.

Posted by: jaybird May 10 2009, 03:02 PM

Yeah cos some of madonna 80's tracks have higher sales than originally recorded e.g
Holiday selling over 700,000 copies.
Crazy for you and papa don't preach selling over 600,000 copies.

I get 'Frankie' on 715,000 Estimated Sales, & 'Chain Reaction' on 705,000 - its 1986 Sales.
'Chain Reaction' was also No.20, (for 3 Weeks), as a 1993 Re-issue.

In my Top 300 Singles of the 1980's, I have the Top 246 selling 400,000 - or more - copies.
Other people - who estimated, (mainly), the Top 300 of the 1980's, may well decide that
more than 246 Singles sold 400,000, or more. Then again - they may decide that less than
246 Singles managed it.

Posted by: zeus555 Jun 27 2009, 09:22 PM

As ALL of his Hits are Selling once again - as Downloads - there is no point - at this stage
- in trying to work out how many his Hits sold in the 1980's.

I know someone at The OCC. I'll ask him if The OCC will compile Michael's Top 30, (or Top 50),
UK Best Selling Singles/Songs, for the UK Media/Chart Fans. It may be best for any such List to
be compiled later in 2009 - when the current level of his Downloads have had time to drop a bit.
So that the bulk of his Downloads - June, July, & August, can be added in.....

The reason Flashdance is showing up as certified gold on some sites is because after 1989 gold certification required 400,000 copies however before this it was 500,000 and they just haven't took this in to account. So it could well have sold 400,000+ and still be certified silver as it was released in 1983

Did anyone find out the top 50 best selling singles by female solo artists in the uk in the 80's? biggrin.gif

Posted by: SimonW Jul 17 2009, 11:02 AM

Here is a chart of solo women of the 1980s with estimated sales. I've collated the information from Record Mirror and Music Week over the years, plus recent charts broadcast by the Official Charts Company. Sales are restricted to between 1980 and 1989.

UK Singles Sales 1980 to 1989 - Solo Women

Title Artist Year Est. Sale
1 The Power Of Love - Jennifer Rush 1985 1,320,000
2 Fame - Irene Cara 1982 975,000
3 Into The Groove - Madonna 1985 820,000
4 Woman In Love - Barbra Streisand 1980 780,000
5 Feels Like I’m In Love - Kelly Marie 1980 750,000
6 Like A Virgin - Madonna 1984 725,000
7 Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler 1983 675,000
8 Chain Reaction - Diana Ross 1986 675,000
9 I Should Be So Lucky - Kylie Minogue 1988 650,000
10 Together We Are Beautiful - Fern Kinney 1980 650,000
11 I Feel For You - Chaka Khan 1984 645,000
12 I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) - Whitney Houston 1987 640,000
13 Move Closer - Phyllis Nelson 1985 635,000
14 9 To 5 - Sheena Easton 1980 615,000

Women as a named featured artist, sales from 1980 to 1989:

a Especially For You - Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan 1988 950,000
b I Know Him So Well - Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson 1985 870,000
c The Only Way Is Up - Yazz and the Plastic Population 1988 720,000

Female groups, sales 1980 to 1989:

i Frankie - Sister Sledge 1985 680,000

There have been some reappraisals of sales since the 1980s as the chart compilers have: 1) gathered together over the counter record sales direct from companies (shipments less returns) and 2) built better computer models of the marketplace through experience. So some of the above figures are likely to have altered. I believe that the top 3 and a to c are pretty accurate.

Posted by: jaybird Jul 17 2009, 07:02 PM

I believe the next few on the list are:
15.Madonna-Papa don't preach 598,000
16.Toni basil-Mickey 580,000
17.Tiffany-I think we're alone now 535,000
18.Sinitta-So macho/Cruising 530,000

22.Madonna-Crazy for you 508,000
23.Diana Ross-Upside down 505,000

25.Madonna-Holiday 500,000.

Posted by: jaybird Jul 25 2009, 07:07 PM

Completing my list are:
26.Dionne warwick-Heartbreaker 480,000
27.Tina turner-Whats love got to do with it 460,000
28.Kate robbins-More than in love 450,000

Kylie minogue was the first female to have her first 9 singles sell over 200,000:

I should be so lucky 675,000
Got to be certain 274,000
The loco-motion 439,000
Je ne sais pas pour quoi 315,000
Especially for you 980,000
Hand on your heart 450,000
Wouldnt change a thing 325,000
Never too late 200,000
Tears on my pillow 235,000
Better the devil you know 230,000

I don't think even madonna has achieved that.

Posted by: fiesta Aug 6 2009, 02:09 PM

On the subject of Kylie Minogue. When the OCC produced a list of her biggest selling singles back in June last year. They put Give Me Just A Little More Time from 1992 at number 7, this suggests sales of around 320,000. However its sales in 1992 were only almost 140,000, which means it would have sold around 180,000 ! in downloads since 2004? Surely this is a mistake?

01 Can't Get You Out Of My Head
02 Especially For You
03 I Should Be So Lucky
04 Hand On Your Heart
05 The Loco-Motion
06 Wouldn't Change A Thing
07 Give Me Just A Little More Time
08 Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi
09 Got To Be Certain
10 Spinning Around

Posted by: jaybird Aug 6 2009, 09:18 PM

yeah i think it must be cos since better the devil you know shes only had 4 singles sell over 200,000:

Confide in me 209,000
Spinning around 250,000
Kids 200,000
Can't get you out of my head over 1 million.

I would love to have a copy of the listing.
If you could publsihed them on here that would be priceless - or if you could e-mail the listing.
I have a list of the official Top 200 best selling singles of 1981 (but not with sales figures though - sorry) which I could publish on here - please let me know if anyone would like me to.

I DON'T have the 'Official' Top 300 Singles of the 1980's. I've estimated the Top 300.
Only the Top 100 is truly accurate. Numbers 101 to 300 are estimated - by me. I spent
hours & hours on it. However - my estimates ought not to be any more 'correct' than anyone
else's. ANYONE can estimate the Top 300 of the 1980's. It just takes time & patience.

Hi everyone,

Just letting you know that you can listen to the Radio 1 year-end charts for 1980 to 1989 on my YouTube channel ajs41.

I'm also uploading some bits of the Top 500 of the 1980s compiled by MRIB on the BRMB radio station. Looking for more information about this particular chart.

I currently know which songs occupied numbers 432 to 429, 421 to 364 (excl. 371 except I know it's by Madonna), 350 to 349, 252 to 233 (excl. 241 and 240) and the top 5 (from memory).

Regards,
Andy JS

I had no idea this had sold so well, I knew it was a #1 though.

Sales were really good in the 90's, especially 1997 even if you exclude Candle In The Wind.
