BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Familia

Posted by: mr_pmt Apr 12 2016, 06:26 PM

The marvellous Sophie Ellis-Bextor has revealed details of her 6th album due this year. Seems she's going for a retro disco sound this time, one of the confirmed song titles is 'Come With Us'.

Wanderlust was nice as a one off, but not something I return to that often so I'm glad it won't be too similar to that.

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE Apr 12 2016, 11:28 PM

Love SEB. Bring back battle of the posh.

I expect some 'Wanderlust' tracks as that was v. well received from r2!

Posted by: slowdown73 Apr 13 2016, 12:39 PM

I really liked Wanderlust so looking forward to this!!

Posted by: Red Blooded Man Apr 13 2016, 03:30 PM

Sounds good by what they are recording.

I remember in one of the news that I read on The Attitude, SEB expressed her doubt about whether she is still passionate about disco music given she experienced the success of Wanderlust. I always think that disco doesn't really suit her that well but after listening "Only child" last year, she'd be fine as long as she finds the disco sound that suits her voice.

Posted by: Zárate Apr 13 2016, 09:19 PM

I'm a big fan of 'Wonderlust', it's probably her best album bar 'Trip' for me. I don't know what to hope for next era, she is very talented woman and I don't think she will disappoint!

Posted by: ThePensmith Apr 17 2016, 01:37 PM

On 'Trip...' the retro disco thing worked superbly - along with 'Wanderlust' and 'Read My Lips' it's her best album and it was my best album of 2007 overall. 'Make a Scene', whilst still an alright album, just felt a bit laboured by comparison, mainly because it took so long for it to actually come out and most of the songs from it were leaked in some form or another whilst she had more babies, cancelled tours to go on tours with Take That and the like. Now she's releasing independently and is on her own terms without a middle man at a major intervening in it all I'd like to think it'd be different.

The tracklist (according to Josepvinaixa):

1. Intro
2. Here Comes the Rapture
3. Unrequited
4. Hush Little Voices
5. Cassandra
6. My Puppet Heart
7. Death of Love
8. Saddest Happiness
9. Come With Us
10. Crystallize
11. Wild Forever
12. Don’t Shy Away

Come With Us premiered on Radio 2 this morning, it's about 1:38:30 in on this link:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07knjzq#play

It's good, it almost sounds like some of the stuff on Read My Lips or Trip The Light Fantastic if it had been produced by Nile Rodgers, definitely more classic Sophie than the stuff on Wanderlust.

Posted by: Simon. Jul 18 2016, 05:06 PM

Nice to hear her voice again, don't really think much of it on first listen. unsure.gif

Posted by: Regina Jul 18 2016, 05:40 PM

Love that, her voice is just so sublime.

It's a bit like 'Love Is Here' with a Nile Rodgers-esque guitar.

It's nice enough! I like the disco vibe and should grow. I hope there's better on the album though.

Yeah I thought of Love Is Here in particular. Though that track is probably in my top five Sophie songs (wub.gif) and it doesn't quite reach those heights for me.

The sound is promising for me at least, so I'm very much looking forward to the album.

Posted by: Martyn Jul 18 2016, 10:33 PM

If it is similar to Love Is Here (forgot how much I love that song) then I should like this. I wasn't too fussed for her last album.

Posted by: Regina Jul 19 2016, 03:52 PM

Confirmed September 2nd release date. Come With Us is the first single/grat.

I like how she's carried the theme of Wanderlust but more colourful *.*

Posted by: #00274E Jul 19 2016, 04:09 PM

erm that album cover dafuq

Posted by: Red Blooded Man Jul 19 2016, 04:16 PM

I like the electro vibe but this is definitely a slow grower for me. sad.gif

Posted by: mr_pmt Jul 19 2016, 05:24 PM

The font/colour looks revolting. sad.gif

That clip instantly brings the song to life for me though!

Well i think Groovejet with Spiller may have kickstarted the whole nu disco trend in dance in the early and mid 2000s which created an alternative to trance and more electronic types of dance music at the time.

Thats good that she is going back to her nu disco roots, Murder on the dancefloor was a great tune too. Something with Sigma or Clean Bandit (they are very disco influenced) would be a great crossover record and could do well.

Posted by: JosephStyles Jul 19 2016, 07:13 PM

Yeah that artwork isn't very good imo sad.gif I do like the song though, a lot more than Young Blood on first few listens! Quite excited for the album, Wanderlust was quite a pleasant listen through.

Posted by: slowdown73 Jul 20 2016, 11:06 AM

Can't wait for this. I loved wanderlust - her best album yet!

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE Jul 20 2016, 04:33 PM

I cannot wait for the album

Posted by: mr_pmt Jul 20 2016, 05:06 PM

'Come With Us' has proven to be a real grower.

Posted by: Simon. Jul 20 2016, 07:07 PM

It's definitely getting better with each listen, there's a remix of it on Spotify which is just as good also, 9 something can't remember.

Posted by: ___∆___ Jul 21 2016, 11:35 AM

Love the remixes (Just streaming now on Apple) - She's given this such a quiet release that I would have missed this if it wasn't for the forum!

Amazn has a deluxe version listed. What's the difference to the standard?

Just found out she has a show on Sep 8 in London, tried to get tickets but it's sold out. sad.gif

Thanks, didn't think it'd have extra songs.

Posted by: ThePensmith Aug 4 2016, 07:13 PM

What an absolute banger! It's a nice return to the 'Trip the Light Fantastic' sound for her whilst keeping a bit of retro-ness about it all. And it's about joining a cult - what's not to love? Will be pre-ordering the album for sure!

Posted by: Qween Aug 4 2016, 08:37 PM

Come With Us is absolutely brilliant, had it stuck in my head all day

Posted by: Inna Selez Aug 9 2016, 05:45 PM

She is so sweet. I like her foxy lady style.

Posted by: Regina Aug 26 2016, 06:19 PM

Unrequited is out and SO good heart.gif

Posted by: slowdown73 Aug 27 2016, 04:50 PM

Just heard unrequited. Its a beautiful song. Really good.

Posted by: ThePensmith Aug 28 2016, 03:34 PM

I note with interest on her Instagram she's posting the progress of her album pre-order signings and is making each one unique and tailored (sunglasses, Ziggy Stardust makeup, Edwardian moustache etc). I've pre-ordered one so hope I get an Edwardian tache on mine.

Not sure how this will perform? There doesn't seem to be much buzz around the single or album this time, I'm sure it'll go Top 20 due to the sales climate but it's feeling like it's going to be a 17-86-Out kinda release.

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra Sep 2 2016, 02:39 PM

This album is kind of a sequel to Wanderlust bar Come With Us & Wild Forever. It's okay.

I'm hoping it can go top 10, although more likely top 15. I doubt it'll be quite that dramatic but it's not gonna do quite as well as the last one.

The album isn't exactly wowing me, some good stuff though. I'm tired of her aiming towards the adult contemporary market now. I want Sophie back as she was before!

Posted by: Regina Sep 2 2016, 04:17 PM

I like how this is like a continuation of Wanderlust tbh, it suits her voice. It's got a bit more oomph too which I love.

Posted by: Umi Sep 2 2016, 04:24 PM

In light of the entire album, 'Come With Us' as the lead single looks kind of cynical.

Posted by: slowdown73 Sep 2 2016, 09:48 PM

I'm slightly underwhelmed by the album at the moment. It's not bad in any means, just a bit subdued and dull in places. I think I was expecting more after Wanderlust but this isn't quite up there in comparison.

Posted by: mr_pmt Sep 2 2016, 11:04 PM

I was expecting a bit more of the disco vibe of the single, but it's not even that different to Wanderlust (except it doesn't have the charm or melody the songs on there had).

I'm so disappointed with this. sad.gif

Posted by: slowdown73 Sep 3 2016, 12:29 PM

It was no20 on iTunes last night. I think it will struggle and be lucky to sell half the amount of Wanderlust.

It also hadn't made the Top 30 on Amazon, think this will enter between 15-20 and then fade away quickly.

Does she have any promo coming up? All I can see so far is that she done a performance and signing at HMV in London.

Posted by: Atonement Sep 3 2016, 12:59 PM

I feel sad to say that I don't even have the urge to listen to this album (for now).

Posted by: Regina Sep 3 2016, 01:11 PM

Am I alone in preferring this to Wanderlust? laugh.gif It's up there with Trip The Light Fantastic and Make A Scene for me.

Posted by: gooddelta Sep 4 2016, 08:19 PM

I prefer this to Wanderlust too, there are some beautiful melodies and the production is brilliant, doesn't deserve to go largely unnoticed. Wild Forever, Crystallise, Here Comes The Rapture, Come With Us, Cassandra and Unrequited are all varying shades of excellent.

Posted by: mr_pmt Sep 5 2016, 02:25 PM

According to Mint Royale, the album was #7 yesterday and he expects it to land at around 11/12 on Friday.

Sadly I think the days of Sophie appealing to music forum folk are essentially over. The only reason her post-Make A Scene music has gotten any attention from pop fans is because of her past, and I think a lot of us have to come to terms with her not being, well, a popstar anymore. We're not Sophie's target market in 2016.

Posted by: Simon. Sep 5 2016, 08:54 PM

It's not ideally what I wanted but since getting the vinyl it's majorly grown on me. Mainly track 2, 8 and 9, the one about a puppet has a Sugababes Denial twang to it.

Posted by: mr_pmt Sep 7 2016, 05:06 PM

The album has *slightly* grown on me, I'm still disappointed it was billed as a sparkly or more upbeat version of Wanderlust when it really isn't at all.

I'm finding enjoyment in everything but 'Hush Little Voices', 'My Puppet Heart' and 'Don't Shy Away'... but strangely this album has actually made me appreciate Wanderlust more. laugh.gif

Posted by: Regina Sep 7 2016, 05:07 PM

Aly My Puppet Heart is one of the best ones on the album sad.gif

Posted by: Qween Sep 11 2016, 11:17 PM

Good God Unrequited is EXQUISITE. The whole album is really lovely, a nice continuation of the Wanderlust sound, whilst still being a natural evolution. It's clearly a passion project and this is where she is as an artist now. I'm quite happy with it too because it really works for her voice and the production and melodies are still excellent. Wild Forever, Unrequited, Come With Us and Don't Shy Away are my early PICKS.

Posted by: pippa Sep 12 2016, 05:02 PM

Not a nice week for the album this week, number 74 in the midweek information released today pirate.gif cry.gif

Posted by: Qween Sep 12 2016, 06:33 PM

That's a little worse that I expected, but given everything it's also not a huge surprise. She should at least get a Strictly slot at some point which might help it rebound and add a few thousand sales.

My prediction almost came true - Currently at a horrific #74 in the mids! It's making 'Wanderlust' looking like a blip!

Big drop for Sophie but there doesn't appear to be the same kind of promotion or buzz compared to Wanderlust.

Fair play to her for going with single #3 - really not sure who or which market she is going after though? 'Wanderlust' only achieved 1 charting single and that was on the back of being fresh from SCD.

Posted by: mr_pmt Dec 13 2016, 07:54 AM

At least the last album got boosts with the single releases though, with this they must literally be hemorrhaging money.

Posted by: ___∆___ Dec 13 2016, 03:08 PM

^^ I always wonder how acts like Sophie make it work - it's not like she's recouping from constantly being on tour and selling out shows or would have a big merchandise fan buying base?

She has released physicals, videos etc., for essentially about 5k in sales - there has got to be some hefty loss?

There are always the things we can't see, like private gigs. And somehow I think she still makes money from her old hits (radio royalties and stuff like that).
