XXXTentacion 50 57 18 04 NORMAN F**KING ROCKWELL! Lana Del Rey After a slight disruption to the simulation, Mariah Carey drops out of the entire top 100 from #1 for the second year in a row, letting Tones And I return for a preposterous 22nd week at #1. I'm starting to forget if there was ever a time she wasn't at #1. Dua Lipa is #2 for a 3rd time now, but she won't be getting to #1 next week. She's also running out of time as The Weeknd is climbing fast with "Blinding Lights" which now hits #7. MEDUZA were quite a bit shy of their UK #2 peak for "Piece Of My Heart" here, but they've matched "Lose Control"'s #11 peak, they're also in the country right now. Speaking of UK comparisons, despite a seemingly endless chart run, "Someone You Loved" is actually lower here than the UK despite having ACR over there. After debuting on the same week, "HIGHEST IN THE ROOM" quickly fell behind "10,000 Hours" but now is back ahead for the first time in months thanks solely to ROSALIA's impact. In more big hit news, "Sunflower" now has the most successful top 50 chart run on linear points, overtaking "Shape Of You" despite still having 17 less weeks in the top 50. "Eastside" is just 6 weeks away from matching both Ed Sheeran songs with their record 80 weeks in the top 50. And speaking of those two Ed Sheeran songs, "Shape Of You" is ahead of "Perfect" on the chart for the first time in over 2 years. This is not traditionally a busy week for new arrivals, last year only Post Malone's "Wow." entered the top 50 on the first chart of the year. This week there are 5 new entries, predominantly from dance acts, with Riton, Oliver Heldens & Joel Corry scoring their first top 50 entries (though I will note that "Rinse & Repeat", "Fake ID" & "Ginger" were all fairly popular on triple j, while "Gecko (Overdrive)" was a top 100 hit). Sofi Tukker also score their 2nd top 50 hit, though just like their previous weeks in the top 100 with "Purple Hat" it comes with a potential asterisk as Roddy Ricch's "The Box" is absent in vintage ARIA fashion. Don Toliver cracks the top 50 after behind held back by Christmas festivities, and of course BENEE finally has a top 50 hit with "Glitter", which as I have mentioned before, should have charted weeks ago but maybe they were saving it up to be the first new entry of the decade. That doesn't explain why platinum selling (and all around excellent) "Soaked" was never let on the chart, I'm forever salty about that. As Don Toliver debuted a few weeks ago, he becomes one of the elite few artists to have scored top 100 hits in the 2010s and the 2020s, alongside Young Thug, Travis Scott, Sheck Wes & The Rubens. The latter's single was released over a month ago, but as per usual, their success is astroturfed heavily by Hot Hits Australia picking up the song belatedly. Also noteworthy in the re-entries is BROCKHAMPTON's "SUGAR", which is not yet on Hot Hits Australia but amazingly looks like it'll be cracking the top 50 next week, and they're in the country right now as well, I'm stoked to see them on Friday. 3 weeks into Harry Styles' chart run for his self-titled album, he was down to #4, this time around he's back at #1, assumably due to lack of competition as Billie Eilish is up to #2 on her 40th week, she may be a strong contender for EOY #1 when that's posted. Travis Scott's "JACKBOYS" project becomes his 2nd highest charting release at #5. The Chainsmokers narrowly score a new peak thanks to reduced competition, though it's worth noting that despite the mass Christmas exodus, Robbie Williams remains in the top 50, and Michael Buble in the top 100. I'm a little skeptical as her lead is slipping a bit, and she's not climbing fast enough in the US to compensate by way of newsworthy global success ("Somebody That I Used To Know" went from out of the top 50 to back in the top 20 in the midst of its US success). The Hottest 100 is a couple weeks away and while I don't think she's a sure bet for #1, she'll poll highly and there isn't any other contender I can imagine would be boosted ahead of her ("Thrift Shop" won in 2012 but only held on at #2 on the ARIA Chart that week because "Same Love" was ahead of it on ARIA and still polled in the top 20). Similarly, "Sex On Fire" was such an overplayed hit by the time it won that it actually dropped on the chart. It's hard to fathom people just discovering "Dance Monkey" from the countdown and buying it in response The way he's climbing, The Weeknd might be able to get there in a couple of weeks, but maybe Roddy Ricch could blow up ahead as well, he's currently #15 on Spotify.

Australia & New Zealand seem to be consistently BROCKHAMPTON's 2nd/3rd biggest markets (behind the US obvz) for some reason, looking at Kworb history the TikTok-fuelled return of 'SUGAR' has had a near identical run on Australian Spotify as it has on US Spotify (and it's doing slightly better in New Zealand where it's hit its highest position in any country so far at #23). Here's hoping it can go on to become a relatively big hit at least in Oceania where lack of radio airplay can't hold it back ~ Maybe this is why they decided to perform in Oceania before coming to the UK
edit: I made a joke about Tones And I here but I'm removing it as it was a little in poor taste xx |

triple j has been a big proponent for BROCKHAMPTON I think. They featured "SATURATION II" in late 2017 (ie playing assorted tracks from it 10 times a day for a week) and the reception was really good -> "SWEET" was voted 11th best song of the year (and 2nd highest not from AU/NZ).
Tones is doing a bushfire benefit concert later this month Obviously would be a better PM than what we have right now. |

I'll support Tones for PM if it means she stops making music xx
And I see, that makes sense then - Triple J bringing the taste. |

What is absurd about it all is that there are only 12 singles that have even spent this long in the top 10. I am fairly certain she'll retain the #1 spot next week, but the week after will see things heating up. Presently there's a 6 song logjam on the Spotify chart all within about 4% of the #1 spot. Of them, probably only "Roxanne" is out of the race, though Dua Lipa considerably lacks momentum in her 4th week at #2. Perhaps the most likely bets are The Weeknd, who is up to #3 this week and has the strong sales his competitors lack, and Roddy Ricch who has the fastest streaming momentum and I can see him soaring ahead of the pack. His sales however are lackluster. The other contender is Justin Bieber. The #8 debut for "Yummy" perhaps seems underwhelming, but it's the latest showing in how Spotify's platform slows down new releases in Australia. Not only do our top 50 charts update a day late because of time zones, but the people running our curated playlists can be very behind the pulse. While major releases can occasionally get an instant Hot Hits Australia add, it took several days before Justin was put right at the top, and as a result, he has been perpetually climbing every day since release (whereas he has been descending pretty much every day in the US). Things are not as concerning as in New Zealand where he looks to have the #1 spot locked next week, but he's on the way to a big climb next week. The important thing this week is BROCKHAMPTON scoring their first top 40 hit (though it feels weird when Joba & Merlyn don't have verse, I learnt last week that Merlyn clearly got the biggest reaction whenever he was center stage). They're set for a big climb next week as well. The Chainsmokers help contribute to my adage that nearly every at least moderately well known female singer in Australia will have their biggest success alongside a producer or a rapper. Not that I expect "The Reaper" to get as high as "Adore" or "I Said Hi", but maybe it'll get a higher Spotify total worldwide. It's a dead week on the album chart with not a single debut in the entire top 100. Harry Styles thus is able to score a 3rd week at #1 though with very low figures. Helped by a recent tour, Lewis Capaldi manages to score a new peak with his album that originally debuted at #10. Stormzy even is showing impressive longevity with his latest album returning to its debut position, though unluckily alongside his first album, he's now spent 3 weeks at #11 without a top 10 peak. In general it looks like pure sales from the holiday season have died out and so anything and everything that thrives on streaming is having a good week. Next week we'll see how high Selena Gomez can get, with her personal bar set at #3 with 2015's "Revival". |

Nah, as I said, Tones has next week's chart locked up. The week after is less certain, and I can't put Bieber out of the equation, but I think Roddy Ricch is going to leap ahead of him. But then I keep expecting Bieber's streams to top out but they just haven't yet. Suffice to say it's too early to judge a tracking week that hasn't even started

However, this week comes with the possibly incredulous news that a change is gonna come. The Weeknd rises to #2 to score his 3rd #2 hit with "Blinding Lights", following the unlucky runs with "Can't Feel My Face" and "Starboy", the latter spending a record holding 11 weeks at #2. Interestingly, The Weeknd's closest bid for #1 was actually with "The Hills", which upon the release of the remixes, shot up to #3, but there were less than 1000 sales between #1 & #4 that week. With a big digital gain this week and steady streaming progress, I very much believe that "Blinding Lights" will take the #1 spot next week. As is often the case with long lasting reigns, Tones might not even just drop to #2 because I see Roddy Ricch taking up that slot. Justin Bieber climbs to #4 which looks to be his peak as the declines are setting in hard now. Speaking of Justin Bieber though, this week we have yet another Canadian megastar having their debut week slacking because of Australian Spotify things. Future alongside Drake scores his 2nd highest charting single to date (behind "Mask Off") with "Life Is Good", but it looks like it could become his highest charter next week as it has a proper full week. Notably among the debuts, Mac Miller scores his first ever lead artist top 50 hit, having previously made #37 alongside Ariana Grande on "The Way". His only previous lead artist entries were top 100 peaks for "Dang!" and "Self Care", the latter getting through posthumously (although come Hottest 100 voting, "Ladders" proved itself the most popular track). We also have another shocking sight as an up and coming Australian rap group is actually counted on the chart. Fueled in part by TikTok, No Money Enterprise's "German" enters the chart with so little care that ARIA haven't even labelled them as Australian yet. This is not actually unprecedented, as it took several weeks before ARIA decided that Joji counts as an Australian artist, though I don't think there's anything contentious about Queensland-hailing No Money Enterprise. Lower down, Doja Cat scores her 3rd chart entry which looks a decent chance to become her first top 50. Endor's UK top 10 hit "Pump It Up" debuts and in the process, outpeaks Danzel's version which reached #84 back in the day. Something I forgot to mention last week is that "Dance Monkey" was dethroned on the Digital Tracks chart for only the 2nd time last week, as Delta Goodrem released a bushfire relief charity single in "Let It Rain", which immediately shot to #1 on iTunes by a huge margin. According to ARIA's Twitter, it was left off the chart by the record label due to being a mid-week release, despite seemingly appearing on the midweek report, which itself could serve as a very telling look into ARIA's supposed rules about chart eligibility actually being untrue and thus we really do just have an incompetent industry. Anyway, it is possible that the gambit to let her have a full week of sales to debut on is for naught because she actually lost her #1 digital position this week so it's possible she could have debuted higher last week (though I imagine her streaming figures were higher this week). We have our first new #1 album of the decade and it comes from Selena Gomez. As I mentioned last week, her highest peak before this was #3. Elton John also climbs back to #4 thanks to his local tour. There's also more bushfire relief, as in the most on brand action possible, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have released 3 live albums for charity. The 3rd one was released a little later than the first two, which become their 8th & 9th top 10 albums, all of which have been achieved within the last 3 years. Also in the country is Lizzo who scores a new top 20 peak for her album. Next week looks to be relatively busy but I'd hesitate to call it competitive. Eminem is probably a lock for the #1 spot, with Halsey & Mac Miller coming up behind. |

Blinding Lights is #1! What a shocking day this has been, not only did Tones and I only come in at #4 in the Hottest 100 but she’s also been knocked off her incredible record-breaking streak at #1! Although who knows how much/if any extra streams Dance Monkey will get after the shock of the Top 5 so maybe she’ll reclaim it next week

Yay for The Weeknd hitting #1. Interesting that he has 4 #1s in the US but the song finally giving him his first #1 in several other countries (the UK possibly included in the next few weeks) is one that has so far only got to #11 there (though I am sure it'll climb into the top 10 if not #1 soon).

It wasn't by a hefty margin however so it could actually be very close on next week's chart. Hottest 100 impact will be in full effect which doesn't really seem to be paying much dividend to The Weeknd with his #71 finish, but has done quite a bit for Tones And I despite the fact that a bunch of very normal, very cool, very funny people spent all of their weekend circlejerk whinging on social media about the impending presence of a song that only ended up finishing at #4 in a music poll. Getting the vast majority of that impact is of course Billie Eilish who in addition to taking the #1 spot with "bad guy", came within striking distance of both matching and surpassing the all time record for entries in a single year ("my strange addiction" was #101, "i love you" was #107). Also apparently some lesser music award called The Grammys happened and thus, "bad guy" has been #1 on iTunes for the past 2 days. Elsewhere this week, Eminem's album lands all but 2 full length tracks in the top 100, with "Godzilla" in the top 10 as the highest. This is higher than anything from "Kamikaze" charted, and is also Juice WRLD's highest charting single to date. He's not the only artist to posthumously do this because "Good News" for Mac Miller also overtakes "The Way" as his highest. Future is still with us to see "Life Is Good" surpass "Mask Off" as his highest charter, and in the midst of this, BROCKHAMPTON now have a top 20 hit. Eminem unsurprisingly scores his 11th #1 album, which has him by far with the most in the 21st century, but also behind only Jimmy Barnes & The Beatles for all time. This is unfortunate for Halsey however who has to settle for her 3rd #2 peaking album in a row. Dead Letter Circus & Backstreet Boys have also had 3 #2 albums without a #1, the only artist I know to have more is Radiohead, with their 6 #2 peakers. Mac Miller scored his first top 10 album when "Swimming" returned at #7 upon his passing. Now he has a top 10 debut and even higher with companion piece "Circles" in at #3, giving us an entire top 3 of debuts. The only other debut in the rest of the top 50 is only a technicality. Magic Dirt are a much celebrated alt rock band whose story was undercut by bass guitarist Dean Turner sadly dying of cancer over a decade ago. They first impacted the ARIA Charts in 1994 with their 2nd EP "Life Was Better" which was a #71 peaking single. Last week it was re-pressed on vinyl as well as getting a new digital release, except while it originally had 5 tracks, this re-release has 6 tracks, meaning it is now eligible for the album chart, and enters at #26. Next week is a quite one, and with Eminem not doing especially big numbers, it seems a good chance that Billie Eilish could return to #1. |

In the past week The Weeknd has been challenged on iTunes and Spotify for the top spot, but seemingly held strong towards the end of the week to get a 2nd week at the top, meaning he has seemingly no competition in the near future. If you need any further proof of this, then look no further at the two songs that did disrupt it which sit in the top 3. It's time to definitively say that "Dance Monkey" reigned 24 weeks (though you could also say it was the monthly top seller for 6 consecutive months as well), as it holds at #2 again. Notably this is its 30th week in the top 10, only 1 away from matching the all time record from Post Malone & Swae Lee's "Sunflower". Right behind it we've got an absurd rebound as result of two independent upswells. "bad guy" being #1 in triple j's Hottest 100 (with Billie also having the most individual entries, and votes), and Billie sweeping the big 4 at the Grammy Awards. I cannot say for sure what's taking the lion share of the impact, because in actual fact, "bad guy" had climbed to #1 on the iTunes chart before she even started winning those Grammy Awards, and of course, Spotify took it upon itself to join the circlejerk by putting "bad guy" back on Today's Top Hits which could be considered indirect Grammy impact, mainly because I refuse to believe that many people care about them (not to mention how the majority of the impact was on the day after when the news cycle hit, rather than Australians reacting to the awards in real time on the day). Anyway the end result is "bad guy" all the way up to #3, and large improvements for her catalogue overall. Another big beneficiary is Flume's "Rushing Back", which has spent months hanging around the top 20, but now belatedly gets a top 10 peak with its #2 Hottest 100 finish. This makes it Flume's 3rd top 10 hit and Vera Blue's 2nd. Sofi Tukker didn't quite make the top 10 but still have a big rebound perhaps befitting of a song that's been riding high on the Shazam chart for months, but mainly I'm just fascinated that a song like "Purple Hat" is all the way up at #23. Mallrat is seemingly the new Tame Impala by getting all of her chart fortunes from the Hottest 100. This time last year, "Groceries" got its belated debut in the top 60, and now "Charlie" which I believe peaked at around #110 on initial release, gets onto the ARIA Chart proper and gives her, her first top 50 hit, which you love to see after she was stuck at #51 on Spotify 2 days in a row. In fact a lot of Australian artists get such dividends. There were a pitiful 9 Australian tracks in the top 100 last week, one of which dropped out this week but we still boost that to an underwhelming but bearable 15 this week. For yet another year, when given a democratic process, triple j voters formed a top 100 list of almost two thirds Australian artists. Meanwhile Australian radio is required to have 20% Australian content in order to keep their broadcasting licence which is worked around by filling the quota at 11pm with nonstop Australian content (and of course, playing Chainsmokers songs that feature Australian artists because that technically counts by definition but it's still lazy as hell). All of this really just perpetuating the myth that Australian content isn't really clamoured for, even though it's clear that audiences respond strongly when given the opportunity. To note on Australian entries, The Jungle Giants & Thelma Plum having been on the scene for close to a decade now score their first ever top 100 entries (aside from a feature credit for Thelma), The Jungle Giants having actually had 5 gold selling singles now. Lizzo's "Juice" has been a strong digital seller for a good year now but now sneaks into the top 100 for the first time with a lesser version of Billie Eilish's double boost. Doja Cat also scores her first top 50 hit with "Say So" which is also Dr. Luke's highest charting song since LunchMoney Lewis's "Whip It!" from 2015 in case you ever were curious. Because "Shape Of You" is usually always charting alongside it, "Perfect" is the longest running song on the chart for the first time ever, despite having the 3rd longest top 100 chart run of all time (behind "Shape Of You" and..."Thinking Out Loud" of course). July last year was the last time Billie Eilish was #1 on the album chart, but now 6 months later she notches up an 8th week at the top. It's a lucky run for the top on a slow week which only has two debuts in the whole top 100. Surprisingly, the top debut for the Pet Shop Boys gets them into the top 10 for the first time in 24 years. The other debut is way down at #78 for The Witcher's soundtrack pam pa ramming its way onto the chart. I'm not sure if we'll have a new #1 next week but there's a bit more competition coming with Chillinit, Louis Tomlinson & Meghan Trainor. |

He's given his role of being stuck at #2 to Dua Lipa who's now notched up 5 weeks there for "Don't Start Now" and I remind you that she's yet to score a #1 hit. "Dance Monkey" ties "Sunflower" as the longest running top 10 hit of all time, next week taking it outright. Halsey scores her 6th top 10 hit with "You should be sad", while the ceaseless push for "Before You Go" gives Lewis Capaldi his 2nd. Dua Lipa narrowly has the top debut with "Physical" which is getting a massive radio push but it looks to climb a bit slower than that. Taylor Swift is just behind her on the strength of big digital sales and will probably crash out next week. Australia's favourite cardboard producers The Rubens score their 3rd top 50 hit. I should probably take a bit more time to remember what came out before I make my predictions because this week's new #1 album actually comes from Dune Rats. With vote splitting across multiple singles, they could only get as high as #100 in the Hottest 100 last month but notably in doing so, prevented Billie Eilish from getting a record tying 6th entry, and it seems apt that they replace her at #1 here as well. Their last album 3 years ago also hit #1 likely aided by the slow summer months. In a way this wasn't a free week though because Eminem's physical album came out in this week but also because we have another debut just behind them with Chillinit. His previous album is a streaming monster that made the top 100 albums of the year with only 2 weeks spent in the top 50. As he's from Australian and Lebanese descent, I can safely say that he's the highest charting Australian rapping person of colour. Lower in the top 10 is Louis Tomlinson whose top 10 debut is made to look very impressive given that Liam Payne limped in at #50 a couple months ago. Meghan Trainor & Kesha have diminishing returns however, with Meghan's debut being comparable to Kesha's own previous diminishing return in her last album which was her first to miss the top 10. So baseless logic would dictate that Meghan Trainor's next album will land around where Kesha is this week. Next week we'll see if Green Day can utilise all the Swedish songwriters & trap beats in the world to get a #1 album. |

Dua Lipa's weeks at #2 seem to always come in pairs as she gets her 6th now. Perhaps it's possible Billie Eilish replaces her at #2 next week to continue this pattern, but I'm predicting #3 for "No Time To Die". "Dance Monkey" still at #3 is now the longest running top 10 hit of all time on its own, "Sunflower"'s record being broken by a song that entered the top 10 4 weeks after it left. Justin Bieber has the week's highest debut with "Intentions", and just like "Yummy", looks to vault into the top 5 next week with help from the timely album release. Local drill group ONEFOUR score their first top 40 hit with "Welcome To Prison", their first new single since a couple of members have been incarcerated. Joji does the same, previous single "Sanctuary" peaked at #42 but now "Run" gets him to #39. Ali Gatie also astroturfs his way to another top 50 hit which is probably pleasing news to someone out there. Excitingly, ARIA took some initiative and so Mustard's "Ballin'" which should have debuted weeks ago is finally let on the chart. At the moment it doesn't look like it will be able to outpeak "Pure Water" like it did in the US & UK. Auto-tune pioneers Green Day make history with the first ever pure uncut trap album to debut at #1. It's also technically the first #1 album to have the f-word at #1, but I suppose they lack the balls of Lana Del Rey to actually credit as such on the chart. This is actually Green Day's 3rd #1 album and no doubt equally as popular as their other two, "Dookie" & "American Idiot". Notably they missed out in 2009 with "21st Century Breakdown" which sold about 10 times as much as this new album did on week one, but released on the same week as Eminem's "Relapse". Curiously, Eminem is #2 this week and nearly blocked them again. Also this week we have Michael Buble & Queen in the country and they make huge vaults up the chart. The Birds Of Prey soundtrack also lands in the top 10, while Denzel Curry has a top 50 charting album for a 3rd year in a row. In the midst of this, Dune Rats' #1 album from last week has dropped out of the top 50, which is I believe the first time this has happened outside of Michael Buble's "Christmas". On the topic of Green Day & Eminem, we have another tough battle for the #1 spot this week. Tame Impala & Justin Bieber both releasing their first new albums since 2015 (both of which went to #1 with strong sales). So any international readers of this column are advised to acquire Australian VPNs and buy "The Slow Rush" on iTunes and then stream it on Spotify while you're sleeping. |
