Sound is my remedy, feeding me energy

30. Who's That Chick (ft David Guetta) | 7.173 Highest Scores; 10: (jakewild, dan::G, JSG, Riser, kath), Lowest Scores: 0: (Bjork)
29. Run This Town (ft Jay Z & Kanye West) | 7.288 Highest Scores: 11: (PAJ), 10: (jakewild, Mack), Lowest Scores: 1: (Adelita)

At the #30 spot is Who's That Chick, a song by French DJ David Guetta & released in November 2010 as the 2nd single & overall 6th & final release from the reissue edition of his 4th studio album One Love, entitled One More Love. The song was written by David Guetta, Kinda "Kee" Hamid, Patrick Leonard, Madonna, Frédéric Riesterer and Giorgio Tuinfort & uses a sample of Madonna's 1987 single "Who's That Girl". David Guetta was asked to produce songs for Rihanna's 5th album "Loud", but did not have anything which he felt would compliment Rihanna & instead they recorded this collaboration together, which was meant for inclusion on her album, but kept it for his own album instead. Upon release the song recieved postitive reviews & acheived commercial success on the charts worldwide by topping the charts in Belgium & Slovakia, top 5 peaks in Austria, Finland, France, Ireland, Norway, Spain and Switzerland. It was less successful in the USA, where it peaked at #51. In February 2011, Virgin/EMI label executives asked European radio stations to remove the track from their playlists as Rihanna had multiple songs on the chart, given the success of her 'Loud' album & its singles. This is a really fun bop & glad that it didn't get included on her album as this wouldn't have fit in my opinion. You can't deny Guetta's ability to deliver a stonking dance-pop tune & along with Rihanna's icy nonchalant vocals over frantic beats & swaggering synths, makes for a grand fun time, even if it did get overshadowed by her multiple massive hits she was enjoying at the time.

At #29 is Run This Town, a song by American rapper Jay Z, & features vocals by both Kanye West & Rihanna. Released in July 2009 as the 2nd single from Jay Z's 11th studio album The Blueprint 3. The song was written by the performing trio, with assistance from Ernest Wilson and Jeff Bhasker. Production of the track was made by West and Wilson (also known as "No I.D.") & samples 1970s Greek band The 4 Levels of Existence's song "Someday in Athens", Originally "Off That" featuring Drake was planned as the album's 2nd single, until this track was decided on.
Upon release the track recieved mixed reviews from critics, but became a commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the charts in the United Kingdom. It additionally made top ten chartings in ten other countries including in Australia, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. In 2010 the track won Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. I remember this being hotly anticipated at the time & given the names involved, this was gonna be a guaranted smash hit. This is an epic track with the brooding piano chords covering the sounds of war, which gives this a great cinematic feel & of course each artist is on top form here, with Jay Z's addictive & quick fire raps, Rihanna's strong vocal tones on the chorus is a treat & then there's the stellar production by Kanye West with the mix of drums, guitar riffs & even his raps sounds great on this fantastic number.

I like 'Who's That Chick', it's fairly trashy and generic of its time but a whole lot of fun.

Also do have a bit of a soft spot for 'Run This Town', I always liked it way more than the Alicia Keys one which followed and became so perennial.

28. Shut Up And Drive | 7.461 Highest Scores: 11: (Tawdry Hepburn), 10: (kath), Lowest Scores: 3: (Jord, Bjork)
27. Love The Way You Lie (ft Eminem) | 7.5 Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, Jord, PAJ, Tafty, Mack, JSG, Bjork), Lowest Scores: 0: (Dobbo)

#28 is Shut Up And Drive, released in June 2007 as the 2nd single from Rihanna's 3rd studio album Good Girl Gone Bad & samples New Order's 1983 single "Blue Monday". It was written by Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert, Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers while the production was done by the last two. Upon releaseit had mixed reviews from music critics, who labeled its lyrics as fluffy and goofy, yet became commerically successful by reaching top 5 peaks in Finland, Hungary, Greece, Ireland, Netherlands & UK, top 10 peaks in Canada, Germany, Italy, Slovakia & Belgium, then top 20/40 peaks everywhere else, including in the USA where it reached a #15 peak. A special mention that this song was later used in RuPaul's Drag Race - All Stars 2, in a lip-sync for your lfie where contestants Tatianna & Alyssa Edwards performed this song for a chance to re-enter the competition; since both performed exceptionally well, they both got to return. This has frequently been rated the number one best Drag Race lip-sync performance. It's always fun when Rihanna goes into rocker chick mode in this sassy little pop/rock fuelled number. The opening guitar riff instantly sets the tone, along with stammering drum machines, funky synths & the catchy chorus may not be as instant as her previous worldwide chart topper, but this is still a great track & a great 2nd single choice.

A SHOCKER now at #27 with Eminem's Love The Way You Lie featuring our very own Rihanna of course. Released in August 2010 as the 2nd single from Eminem's 7th studio album Recovery. Singer & songwriter Skyler Grey wrote and recorded a demo of the song alongside the producer Alex da Kid when she felt she was in an abusive romantic relationship with the music industry, while Eminem wrote the verses & chose Rihanna to sing the chorus. Upon release the song recieved favourable reviews & became one of the biggest selling singles of the 2010's, by topping the charts in 22 countries worldwide, including in the USA where it sold over 12 Million units there, becoming Eminem's biggest selling single of his career & in the UK where despite it didn't top the charts there, reaching a respectable #2 peak, it still managed to sell 1.5 Million copies there & earned a 2x Platiinum status. The song won many awards and received five Grammy nominations & after it's massive success critics listed it as among the best tracks of the decade & of Eminem's career. Rihanna later recorded a sequel simply titled "Love The Way You Lie (Part II)", which was narrated mostly from her perspective & was included on her 5th studio album "Loud".

Thought this would have been much higher on here & despite scoring several high scores, there were a few lower rates that prevented it from progressing further & maybe the extensive overplay may have killed a few people's enjoyment of it, because i remember this being everywhere at the time, it was one of those songs that you just couldn't escape from. However despite all of that this is still a pretty great song that may be something of a mixed bag for some with heartfelt emotions being undercut by the over the top production & some of Eminem's lyrics are a little clunky at times, yet his verses are delievered with such anger & passion that you can't deny how fascinating it is where it tackles the painful & still very much prominent issue of domestic violence without resorting to shallow stereotypes. Even though Rihanna only comes in for the chorus, her key-role is very important in the song's message & given the fact that she went through this, offers fantastic insight. I've always liked this song & even after 11 years it still sticks fresh in your mind & just as relevant today as it was back then.

Is it fair to say it "flopped"? unsure.gif It was a big top 5 hit in the UK and did reasonably in the US.

I love it anyway, it's a good solid pop bop that wouldn't sound out of place in Girls Aloud's discography. She definitely has a lot worse.

26. Needed Me | 7.557 Highest Scores: 11: (Nick F1, Cremey, blacksquare), 10: (jakewild, vibe, kath), Lowest Scores: 1: (Tawdry Hepburn)

At #26 is Needed Me. meaning that we finally lose the first of Rihanna's Anti era singles. Released in March 2016 as the 2nd single from her 8th studio album, alongside "Kiss It Better". The song was serviced to urban radio stations, while the other track was serviced to mainstream & pop radio. Afterwards Def Jam released it to Mainstream radio after it's success. It was written by Rihanna, Brittany Hazard, Charles Hinshaw and Derrus Rachel together with its producer DJ Mustard and its co-producers Twice as Nice and Frank Dukes. Upon release the song recieved critical praise & became a success on the US Billboard charts by reaching #7, becoming her 29th top 10 hit over there, spending 16 weeks in the top 10 and later becoming her longest charting-hit. Elsewhere it performed moderately with top 20 peaks in New Zealand & Slovakia, as well as top 40 peaks in Portugal, Canada, Czech Republic, Hungary, Sweden & UK. The song also recieved a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance at the 59th ceremony.

This track is deceptively simple, yet very effective with its minimalist beat & haunting hooks, which comes as quite a surprise, considering trap-pop king DJ Mustard is on the production team, along with echoing atmospheric synths and disembodied voices, & of course the almost spoken word verses by Rihanna are sung with such raw attitude that along with everything else creates a tense, yet confident sound. Just a brilliant track through & through that deserves more love.

25. This Is What You Came For (ft Calvin Harris) | 7.673 Highest Scores: 10: (jakewild, Tafty, dan::G, JSG), Lowest Scores: 0: (Dobbo)

At #25 is This Is What You Came For. a song by Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, fearuring vocals by Rihanna. Released in April 2016, through Columbia Records and Westbury Road. The song was written by Harris and American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, who was initially credited with the pseudonym Nils Sjöberg. This marked the 3rd collaboration between Calvin Harris & Rihanna, after "We Found Love", & worked on the production for "Where Have You Been", both of which were included on Rihanna's 6th studio album "Talk That Talk". Taylor Switf's writing credit on the song, caused some controversy as she previously requested secrecy, as she & Calvin didn't want their then relationship to overshadow the song's release, but since then she is now officially credited on the said track. Upon release the song recieved mixed reviews, but became a huge commercial success by topping the charts in 9 countries including Australia, Canada, & Ireland, as well as top 5 peaks in several other countries such as UK, USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland & Sweden. In the fact the song reached top 10 in almost every chart worldwide, except for 3.

It's hard not to compare this to their other monster hit "We Found Love" & while this may not be as instant or progressive as that track, this is still a catchy little danceable number with smooth production, but certain parts of the song does get very repetitve, esoecially towards the end, Rihanna's sounds great during the verses and even towards the chorus with some ear catching vocal effects, those aspects works very well. & it's still a very fine dance tune, even if it doesn't have the same spark or magic as their other collaborations.
