BuzzJack Music Forum _ Indie, Rock and Alternative _ FKA twigs - Magdalene

Posted by: Mattias 4th September 2019, 10:57 AM

FKA twigs will be releasing her 2nd full-length album Magdalene sometime this autumn! Produced predominantly by her and Nicolas Jaar, some song titles and descriptions have been revealed, including the choral a cappella opener '1000 Eyes', witchy trap track 'Holy Terrain', Kate Bush-y 'Mary Magdalene', string-laden 'Home With You', piano ballad 'Mirrored Heart', reflective 'Daybed' and 'Sad Day', which has the amazing description of 'if Opus III - It's a Fine Day ran into Kate Bush on a hillside.'

The already out 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkLjqFpBh84' will also be included.

FKA twigs has done some of the most intriguing music of recent years for me so I'm excited to immerse myself in this follow-up to 2014's LP1. (this not being called LP2 tho!!!)

I have a feeling this will be like AOTY!!1! or whatever tongue.gif

ikr! I guess at least we got the rather brilliant M3LL155X EP since then tho! The emergence of LP1 was defo one of the most interesting additions to my musical explorations back in 2014 and thereabouts, it was one of those albums that felt very 'new' and exciting to me, at the time I couldn't recall hearing much music quite like that before! In that sense it was like hearing Portishead's Dummy for the first time. One of those albums that transformed my musical perspectives. Ugh I sound dramatic af.

Love her.

Posted by: Bré 18th September 2019, 09:15 PM

I didn't really like 'cellophane' at all oops (shoot me) but I'm wayyyyy more into 'holy terrain' <3 am I crazy or does it almost sound like it could be a Madonna song? (a la 'Frozen' a little bit).

Midsommar in 4 minutes basically, oops

Incredible. Sonically this might be the best of the three yet <3

Posted by: Cremey 7th October 2019, 09:23 PM

Absolutely gorgeous. Again.

The album has been pushed back a couple of weeks to November 8th. I’m so ready.

ffs. I might avoid watching until I've seen Midsommar then laugh.gif

The album is out there and wow.

I really didn't expect there to be such an obvious Kate Bush influence. It's such an emotional, fragile, and intense listen. Impressive.

Posted by: blacksquare 30th October 2019, 11:25 AM

I was not prepared for 'sad day'

Deserves gorgeous visuals~

Posted by: 파벨 30th October 2019, 12:12 PM

when you think you can stop crying now that 'sad day' is over, 'mary magdalene' comes on

this record is absolutely mind-blowing and will be on repeat until at least EOY for sure

The tracklist is just perfect. It's as if the entire thing is building up to 'Fallen Alien' – the most chaotic and brash moment on the album. The last three songs progressively become more stripped back and delicate. The production is giving me Bjork at times too.

She did that.

Posted by: 파벨 30th October 2019, 01:19 PM

I'm in awe with how layered each song on this album is. this is blowing LP1 out of the water completely in comparison and I absolutely love that album.

now that you mentioned it the tracklist is indeed quite perfect. 'cellophane' is a fantastic closer.

There is so much detail to the production — everything is so intricate and masterfully done.

I only wish Future wasn't included. The album doesn't need him. This is all her.

I agree. Kudos to her for trying something different though.

This album proves that she's top of the game at the moment alongside Rosalía.

I cannot wait to see this on top of all the AOY charts in December.

One of my favourites on the album — stunning

Nicolas Jaar, Skrillex, Benny Blanco and Noah Goldstein produced it. What a group.

Twigs is changing the game but the world isn't worthy of her music at the moment.

I am so beyond obsessed with the album.

'Cellophane' is the one of the most captivating, heart-wrenching songs I've ever heard and that performance was exactly that and then some. I was curious to see how she tackled them high notes live but they were done to absolute perfection. Then when she walks to the pole and performs on it so effortless - took my breath away. Just beautiful.

Posted by: Cucumberella 6th November 2019, 02:19 AM

that cellophane performance is absolutely INCREDIBLE.

Posted by: Medellíam 7th November 2019, 12:40 AM

Exclusive performance for Annie Mac and BBC Radio 1 at Maida Vale studios. Starts with a cover of Ella Fitzgerald's 'Summertime', followed by her own tracks 'Home With You' and 'Cellophane', then closing with an interview.

Posted by: Medellíam 7th November 2019, 01:02 AM

Stunning performances! The vocals on 'Summertime' are incredible and 'Cellophane' is giving me chills yet again.

I can't believe I've taken this long to recognise her music. I'm know I had heard a couple of songs from her first album when it was released but nothing made an impact on me and I'm pretty sure it's not all of a sudden that she's gained this magical talent.

I'm listening to the album now and I'm picking up a strong Kate Bush influence too, very The Ninth Wave. It is an intense listen; I'm just taking in all the different sounds at the moment.

9.4 from Pitchfork, matching NFR as the highest rated of the year and one of the highest rated of the decade

Fully deserved, a masterpiece.

Both albums sound like lost classics — and to think we got them both within a few months of each other!

Posted by: m 9th November 2019, 09:41 AM

Oh so this is good eh tongue.gif Will probably try and fit in a listen today, I've only heard 'Cellophane' and 'Holy Terrain'.

Posted by: Burns 9th November 2019, 11:56 AM

So first I watched that Jimmy Fallon performance & then listened to this album; really impressed with both. The performance changed my impression of the song considerably, and the album was equally as arty and interesting. Will be revisiting.

Posted by: Bré 9th November 2019, 12:38 PM

I don't know if I'll get around to listening to this album but 'sad day' is another great song (definitely hearing the Kate Bush influence on that) and I'm still loving 'holy terrain' too. Idk why but I'm not really getting into the more minimalist singles from this era, 'home with you' is decent and seems like the kind of thing I should love but it just feels a little bit too disjointed idk ~

Posted by: DalekOne-One 9th November 2019, 01:31 PM

Back when iTunes did these "stream the album for free before its release" thing (which ended in Autumn 2015. The last one I remember being Stereophonics' Keep The Village Alive). I actually streamed the album before its official release back in July 2014 (even before I became an album person). I remember being amazed by the instrumentals on this.
Recently, I listened to this again to prepare for the new album and was surprised to see the people who have produced this album. There was Paul Epworth, Devonte Hynes (a.k.a. Blood Orange), Arca and Sampha.

Posted by: m 10th November 2019, 10:11 AM

I listened to this yesterday like a dutiful student of music and I'm not yet 'jumping up and down' about it like most people but I honestly think it was partly the speakers I was using, they made it sound kinda rumble-y so I want to try with headphones soon. I mean it was beautiful but yeah, I blame my speakers xo. It's likely to properly grow on me. 'Fallen Alien' was a moment, and I'm still loving 'Cellophane'.

Posted by: Medellíam 11th November 2019, 05:43 PM

Currently #15 in the midweeks so will probably debut below the #16 peak of her first album, although that was released in the middle of summer not November.

I'm really enjoying this album! 'holy terrain' and 'mary magdalene' are sticking in my head. I agree Future isn't really necessary to the album but his verse isn't intrusive, it's still all very much about Twigs.

Posted by: Cremey 11th November 2019, 07:42 PM

That’s a shame, I was sure this would be top 10 for her at least.
Not that it matters too much though. I can’t see it missing the mercury shortlist so I’m sure it’ll get a second wind then.

mary magdalene might just end up being my favourite song of the year. phenomenal.

Posted by: Medellíam 11th November 2019, 08:23 PM

Yep I can see this doing really well in the end of year lists too and I think that'll mean much more than commercial success.

Depending how competitive the category is this year, she maybe could be nominated for Best Female at the BRITs? She got a nom back in 2015.

Posted by: dandy* 15th November 2019, 05:56 PM

I'm enjoying this even more than her debut, it's incredibly beautiful without veering into dullness.

Posted by: Bjork 15th November 2019, 06:19 PM

damit peaked at #21

Posted by: Medellíam 21st November 2019, 11:12 PM

Debuts with very similar sales to LP1 though - 3,925 compared to 4,051.

This has been soundtracking my nights since I first listened. So good to wind down to, the flourishes in the production and especially her voice just takes me away.

Posted by: Medellíam 21st November 2019, 11:13 PM

Two more captivating performances. Those highnotes on 'Cellophane' are insane! They sound even higher than usual. Incredible.

Posted by: Liаm 22nd November 2019, 05:15 PM

Finally getting around to this, making sure I hear all the albums I meant to before I do an EOY. I think this will feature highly! I definitely hear Kate's The Ninth Wave as well which is such high praise as Hounds Of Love is one of my all time faves.

Oh so, so good. Prefer the "Cellophane" performance from the Jimmy Fallon show, but still great, whilst "Mary Magdalene" with the sword dance was just captivating.

Posted by: Bjork 24th November 2019, 08:34 PM

I actually prefer the cellophane on Jools, less gimmicks, more focus on the voice

Posted by: CockDestroyer 25th November 2019, 11:00 AM

she can get there in a wedding gown on a two-headed unicorn with a full circus show behind her and the best + most memorable thing by far about the performance will still be her voice...

Posted by: Medellíam 13th December 2019, 11:06 AM

'Cellophane' has been named song of the year by Slant Magazine! cheer.gif 'Sad Day' is #5 and Magdalene is #2, second to Lana Del Rey.

QUOTE
2. FKA twigs, Magdalene
A distinct feminine energy pulses through FKA twigs’s shimmering sophomore effort, Magdalene. Coming off the back of a major public breakup with actor Robert Pattinson and a period of ill-health which left her creatively and physically depleted, twigs made it her mission—both in the writing of this follow-up to 2014’s LP1 and in the extraordinary wushu and pole training she undertook for her Magdalene tour—to embrace her pain. There’s little sense on Magdalene that twigs believes there’s an ideal way to be; all she can do is learn how to accept her own contradictions as a necessary part of growth. The album is a knotty meditation on the process of separating self-perception from public perception, and of twigs’s reclamation of her body and work as hers and hers alone. Richmond

QUOTE
1. FKA twigs, “Cellophane”
It’s no mean feat for an artist to create something that requires enormous strength and yet, to their audience, seems so fragile that it could shatter at any moment. On “Cellophane,” the lead single from her sophomore effort, Magdalene, FKA twigs achieves precisely that. “Didn’t I do it for you?” she asks softly over a sparse piano line, seeming to teeter on an emotional knife’s edge. When she jumps an octave, the effect is heightened even further; her voice is still pure and plaintive, but there’s defiance there too. It’s this tension between pain and power that makes the song’s accompanying video so arresting, and so devastating. As twigs performs a pole dance with near-divine grace, the immense physicality required to master the art becomes invisible, leaving behind only soft lines and fluid movement. Against the backdrop of a woman so clearly self-possessed in her power, the question “Didn’t I do it for you” suddenly seems all the more pointed. As if from spider silk, she spins her pain into a method of healing. Richmond

5. FKA twigs, “Sad Day”
Throughout her second album, Magdalene, FKA twigs calls upon religious references to subvert ideas of her own power. A lyric like “I lie naked and pure with intentions to cleanse you and take you,” from the transcendent “Sad Day,” suggests both submission and dominance; the act of cleansing recalls Mary Magdalene washing Jesus’s feet, yet the phrase “take you” suggests that the object of her affections has no choice but to submit to her. Another often misrepresented biblical figure, Eve, comes to mind when twigs invites her lover to “taste the fruit of me” on the same song, but it’s not an act of temptation, it’s a plea. Richmond

Magdalene is #2 on Pitchfork too (second to Lana again) and #1 on PopMatters and Time.

Madame X is my favourite album of 2019 but Magdalene is a very close second - didn't ever expect myself to like this album at all tbh, completely took me by surprise but I'm so pleased I gave it a chance.

video for "sad day" came out last week, directed by hiro murai who's directed atlanta/worked w childish gambino on a number of projects

sensational

Ooh I didn't make the connection that this was the same director who did 'This Is America' - another great video from him (feels more like an art film very loosely soundtracked by the song than anything else tho).
