"Grace of Monaco" is the one of the latest movies by Nicole Kidman which was released in Greek theaters on Christmas Day. However, in most European countries, it was released last May and June and the very late show in Greece can not be explained in a logical way. "Grace of Monaco" was the official opening film of last year's Cannes Film Festival but was screened out of competition. Producers meant to release this film at the end of November 2013 but there were some problems and disagreements. It was rescheduled for March last year and then for May. The protagonist of the film is Nicole Kidman and was the main reason to watch "Grace of Monaco" in cinema.
Do not expect to see the biography of Grace Kelly on the big screen. "Grace of Monaco" is based on a specific period of her life after she had stopped starring in Hollywood films. The director Olivier Dahan and screenwriter Arash Anel gave more emphasis to the diplomatic incident that existed between France and Monaco (1962), with the crisis of the marriage between Princess Grace with Prince Rainier III of Monaco. The film is pleasant in the beginning but we quickly realize that there isn't anything to really see in this case. The interpretations were nice, it had beautiful photography and the content was quite enlightening when it hadn't to do with the psychology and concerns of the princess. Especially for someone who is not familiar with the political events of that time. Nicole Kidman literally shines in this film but mainly for her disarming appearance rather than her performance. Unfortunately, the movie from a point on had so many clichés, which outperformed all the clichés of all films I watched last year. It was like watching the story of the "grieving princess". If this exists in literature. Let alone, the director did so many close-ups on the face of Nicole Kidman which looked like he was obsessed with her.
"Grace of Monaco" didn't have the expected success in most countries which viewed the movie. The remarkable thing is that it had better earnings in China and Japan than compared with European countries, although the latter had direct contact with the life of Grace Kelly. Moreover, it received lukewarm and negative reviews from film critics while has amassed a modest average score on IMDb (5.6). However, I imagine that the female audience would have liked it more especially for the glamor and glitz that the movie carries during the whole duration. It's not one of the worst films of last year but it hasn't got those elements that would have made it pretty good.
