Ah of course he would re-enter with the Christmas classic. Does he make any further totp appearances?

Another 6 appearances (plus a couple of showings of This Ole House and one of Merry Christmas Everyone).

Thanks Shaky, I didn't think he would keep being asked back through the whole decade. I guess radio support and the fanbase must have led to the hits becoming fewer.

The hits definitely dropped off at this point. Even with the fanbase going out and buying the singles in the first week. Feel The Need only made it to 26 and the follow up just scraped into the Top 50. I Might was the most successful of the remaining singles and that only reached 18.

Just watching now, House Arrest sounds epic (and makes most of the other songs on the show sound dated in comparison) and it really is the start of a new era in chart music as the house hits will come thick and fast now.

It does sound quite cheesy though. Peter Powell righy predicting Climie Fishers next single!

As you say though Snake we are in a new era now and the totp studio changing to show this. Feels like we are quickly entering the new decade already!

The chart was too dominated by generic mid-tempo/ middle of the road stuff in 1985 to 1987 I think and the increased variety brought by the big increase of dance music we will see in 1988 is certainly welcome.

Indeed they had to move somewhere because the early 80s groups successes had dried up. We would have to wait until 1989-92 to find new wave indie groups who left a lasting legacy though.

Just watching Big Hits TOTP 1988 here - really is like we have moved into the modern era music wise (all of a sudden very quickly) with the huge explosion of house and songs like the brillant Buffalo Stance by Neneh Cherry which wouldn't sound out of place in today's chart.

Thought Buffalo Stance was 1989.

Yes also there is the very nice Joyce Sims song 'Come In To My Life' making top 10 at the start of 1988 which is really the start of the 90s R&B sound I think.

It's weird though, Transition Vamp - I Want Your Love goes top 10 in 1988 and it sounds far more early 80s new wave than anything else from 1988.

The rnb sound sounded a lot different from now compared to all the cheesy funk you got up to now. Whereas indie/pop could look forward and back for their influences.

Buffalo Stance was shown in the Big Hits 1988 show. It was released in Nov 88 and peaked in Jan 89 after the Xmas rush of Kylie and Cliff et al.

I’m looking forward to seeing ‘The Adventures’ with ‘Broken Land’. I can’t believe that didn’t even reach the top 5.

Easily one of the best tunes of 1988. Amazingly despite being the biggest singles act of 1988, Kylie doesn’t even appear live in the studio until July/August with the Loco-motion (I think?).

That edition is also memorable for other reasons, can’t wait for that!!

Yes,Broken Land by the Adventures is a fantastic song.

Kylie was still in Neighbours for the first half of 1988 so she would have been in Australia when she had her first two hits.

Sinitta GTO
JellyBean Jingo (Video)
DEpeche Mode Behind the Wheel ❤️
The Stranglers All Day and All of the Night
George Michael Father Figure (Video)

What a fantastic start to the new year with Totp veterans The Stranglers & Depeche Mode performing their new singles live in the studio!! First time for the former single Golden Brown 6 years earlier.

The Terence Trent Derby track is a bit of a classic I had forgotten too. Would give him his best charting single in a few weeks!

Belinda Carlisle finally hit the top spot! I think Kylie was No. 90 that week, though I may be mistaken?

‘Heaven is a place on earth’ & ‘Father Figure’ both in the same edition. That instantly makes it 10/10.😍

I’ll forget about ‘Stutter-rap’ though😡.

I've just watched yesterday's episode (21/1/88) with Bros making their debut and Dollar's first appearance since 1982 with Oh L'amour. I don't think I knew at the time that it was a cover of an Erasure song from 1985. Their original version only got to number 85 but has since become quite well known and was finally a top 20 hit in 2003. And why was Joyce Sims playing a grand piano when she sang 'Come Into My Life'? I can hear no piano on the song at all.

Two Mike Smith episodes were missed by BBC4. Tiffany's first two weeks at No.1.
