80% of that top 5 in 2003 was urban. Thank goodness times have changed since then.

Well hello there again Buzzjackers.

2012

1- SWEET NOTHING- Calvin Harris Ft Florence Welch (94,154) I love this! Calvin is just amazing with everything he does. Infact the whole top 4 were in my top 40 songs of the year, amazing!
2- DON’T YOU WORRY CHILD- Swedish House Mafia Ft John Martin (86,378)
3- GANGNAM STYLE- PSY (62,548)
4- DIAMONDS- Rihanna (58,116)
7- WE ARE NEVER EVER GETTING BACK TOGETHER- Taylor Swift (38,095)
8- ONE MORE NIGHT- Maroon 5 (30,220) I never got into this, it looks like Maroon 5 decided to just release any old crap after Moves Like Jagger and Payphone which I liked
9- TURN AROUND- Conor Maynard Ft Ne-Yo (27,357)
10- I CRY- Flo Rida (25,026)

2008

1- SO WHAT- Pink (44,982)
4- SEX ON FIRE- Kings Of Leon (32,330)
5- UP- Saturdays (26,593)
6- TAKE BACK THE CITY- Snow Patrol (18,460) One of their best, it's very underrated compared to Run and Chasing Cars
7- MISS INDEPENDENT- Ne-Yo (18,315)
8- DISTURBIA- Rihanna (17,748)
9- RAINDROPS (ENCORE UNE FOIS)- Sash!/ Stunt (17,618)
10- GIRLS- Sugababes (16,947)

2003

1- HOLE IN THE HEAD- Sugababes (58,452)
2- TURN ME ON- Kevin Lyttle (56,700) Classic RnB jam heart.gif
3- WHERE IS THE LOVE- Black Eyed Peas (52,000)
4- SUPERSTAR- Jamelia (24,000)
7- MIXED UP WORLD- Sophie Ellis-Bextor (19,000)*
9- I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE- Darkness (15,000)*
10- SWEET DREAMS MY LA EX- Rachel Stevens (13,000)*

1998

1- GYM N TONIC- Spacedust (66,000) lol at this actually getting to #1. The 'Loca People' of 98.
7- GANGSTER TRIPPIN- Fatboy Slim (42,000)*
8- PERFECT 10- Beautiful South (39,000)*

Today will be the first time I've heard the new Justin Bieber and Don Broco songs, not expecting much from them - would like JB to miss the top 20, it'll definitely peak lower than Heartbreaker which is a good sign. Hopefully Iggy and Wilkinson are comfortably in the top 10 tonight too. And one week of Jason Mraz being out of the chart would be nice too but I have a feeling it would have just made a re-entry (from the midweeks) from that Saturday night boost. sad.gif

Gym & Tonic!

This was a cheap remake a Bob Sinclar track that everyone was hearing all over the clubs at the time thanks to the fact Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk / Stardust) was essentially credited with the track:

Granted it's not that different but it is somehow a tiny bit less cheesy. Maybe. Due to clearance issues though the track remained a bonus track on Sinclar's album and Spacedust's track made it to #1. Not only did they rip off the Thomas Bangalter track but they pretty much ripped off his Stardust name too.

Today's Random Retro come from 1982

Week Ending : 23/10/1982
1 (2) Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me
2 (1) Musical Youth - Pass The Dutchie
3 (4) Kids From Fame - Starmaker
4 (3) Fat Larry's Band - Zoom
5 (14) Beatles - Love Me Do
6 (5) Chicago - Hard To Say I'm Sorry
7 (10) Spandau Ballet - Lifeline
8 (27) Pinkees - Danger Games
9 (15) Kid Creole & The Coconuts - Annie I'm Not Your Daddy
10 (6) Kevin Rowland & Dexy's Midnight Runners - Jackie Wilson Said

Chosen because it saw the re-appearance of "Love Me Do" in the Top 10. It was the first in a series of Beatles re-releases 20 years after the original chart entry with "Love Me Do" being the only one of their singles released as a active band to not enter the Top 10 it was good to see this climb into the upper echelons of the chart. The re-releases were also available as picture discs, I picked up a few of them at the time. The tactic grew old pretty quickly and each re-release seemed to chart progressively lower until they barely dented the Top 75.

Elsewhere, we have Boy George and his mob's first week at the top. He was really one of those people with personified the 80s. Musical Youth were some schoolkids from Birmingham who sang a sanitised version of "Pass The Koochie" and were flavour of the month for, well about a month. The Kids from Fame were the 80s answer to Glee Cast without the multiple simultaneous releases. "Zoom" was a big ballad, "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" was a typical Chicago bland ballad, "Lifeline" one of Spandau Ballet's less rememberd hits and "Danger Games" a pretty good piece of early 80s power pop.

Kid Creole was one of those people who you were never sure whether he was serious about thing or just taking the extreme Mick, either way this was his last (and biggest) Top 10. and "Jackie Wilson Said" has entered folklore more for the picture used as a backdrop for the band when performing it on "Top of The Pops" more than for the song itself.
