I think this is a topic that we've discussed before but a few years down the line, what do you consider a missed opportunity for 1D / their solo careers?

- Not pushing More Than This more worldwide felt a bit silly, they could have easily sent it to radio here and at least made a minor hit out of it. Or even better, released it instead of Gotta Be You as the winter ballad.
- FOUR could easily have notched up a couple more hits. It's a shame Zayn's departure put that era on the backburner so much. Where Do Broken Hearts Go with a quick re-recorded version could have done the trick perfectly, with Lose Control rounding the era out. Both had significant promo (X Factor and Carpool Karaoke respectively, though the latter came a while later) and are clear fan favourites.
- Zayn sitting on There You Are while he released so many non-event tracks from Icarus Falls is quite possibly the biggest missed opportunity. It definitely could have been a hit I think??
- It's almost 2 years now since Strip That Down was huge and still nothing about a Liam album??
- I think Sweet Creature could have been a reasonable hit for Harry, it's certified silver without a single push. A second top 40, possibly top 20 hit would've been nothing to sniff at.

Harry Styles as a solo artist.

I.... kinda agree but also don't. He could easily have been SO much bigger but he opted to make an album of the music he enjoys, and it still did pretty damn well. Sold out tour too, so I'm not sure I'd call it a missed opportunity but it certainly could have gone a completely different (and more commercially / critically successful way).

There You Are 100% should have been released and given a proper push to salvage Icarus Falls (even if in the smallest of ways). Easily one of Zayn's absolute best. Such wasted potential considering he promoted the likes of Fingers, No Candle No Light, etc. drama.gif

Where Do Broken Hearts Go definitely should have been chucked out during the FOUR era too instead of just letting it fizzle out. I also think Infinity should have been given proper single treatment before they closed the book with History. sad.gif

Infinity was going to be the single though, until their final X Factor performance in 2015. The public caught on to History so they scrapped plans for Infinity and put together the montage video for History.. and the rest you say, is history!

I think they pretty much got most things right - FOUR had some good crossover hits on it, but obviously that went sour because of Zayn.

And I really agree about Liam Payne too. After Strip That Down he could have been massive. They waited far too long to release Bedroom Floor and it was subpar.

Just gonna talk about One Direction's missed opportunities, as I'm not all that familiar with their solo albums, so here goes...

More Than This: Up All Night

Do agree that first off all not giving this a push with a proper music video, this could have easily been a success. Or what would have been the better choice as the 2nd single instead of 'GBY' (which was simply bland), this would have definitely been better received and been a bigger hit.

Taken: Up All Night

If not the above single, then why not this as the 2nd single following the massive 'WMYB', surely again this would have been a better choice than the bland 'GBY', and again shows another side to them, even at this early stage in their careers.

Heart Attack: Take Me Home

The era was perfect as it was and the 3 singles that were released represented the album really well. But if there was ever gonna be a 4th single, then my choice would have been this little gem. Criminally overlooked and definitely not album filler fodder, but a certified banger.

Diana: Midnight Memories

This album was packed with so many potential smashes, and why this wasn't released as the 3rd single instead of the title track. This was a perfect example of just how far the boys had come musically, yet still not straying too far away from their bobby sound. The melody on this is just so killer and could have easily been a smash hit in the same vein of the first 2 singles.

Where Do Broken Hearts Go: Four

Four was again another 1D album that was packed with so many potential gems, and it was devastating that we only got 2 singles from this (Zayn leaving probably put the spanners in the works). This was gonna be the 3rd single and would have been up there with their very best as this is just a really good tune and easily given them another top 10 hit.

No Control: Four

This firm fan fave that even had a brilliant fan made music video, and everyone really wanted this as a single, so why didn't they just give this a chance. This definitely stands as one of their very best.

Infinity: Made In The A.M.

Wish their hiatus could have extended a bit longer by releasing this as the 3rd single, then have 'History' 4th. Or at the very least have this as the 4th and final single, given that a music video was made until it got scrapped at the last minute.

I do really wish 'More Than This' had been their second single instead of 'Gotta Be You', which wasn't even worthy of leaving the recording studio.

I'd have liked 'Never Enough' from the last album to be a single if it was a long-running campaign. Stomper.

In regards to the solo careers, everything I can think of has been touched upon already!

'There You Are' is a huge missed opportunity. It sounds like a huge hit that could have course corrected the non-event that his second album era has turned out to be.

I have to agree with "Harry Styles as a solo artist". He's incredibly talented and I don't feel that his album did that talent much (verging on any...) justice. I'd like him to touch upon sounds explored on 1D tracks like What a Feeling (which feels quite 80s to me) and Stockholm Syndrome. Some inspiration from Fleetwood Mac could be a good direction. I just hope his next offerings are more melodic!
