Posted by: ThePensmith Aug 2 2019, 03:52 PM

Good afternoon, hope you're doing OK, it's time once again to take a look at my personal top 20 this week. Is Himesh Patel about to make it a month at the top, or has the challenge of new entries from Olly Murs, Jonas Blue and P!nk proven to be a match for him? Here's where we find out...

CHART COMMENTARY

Four weeks on top for Himesh Patel? Alas it was not to be, as although he's sent Westlife and Rak-Su packing in recent weeks, we can safely assume that 'Yesterday' is exactly that for now and dips to #3, meaning it's new chart topper time once again.

Since he made his debut nine years ago in 2010 with his first number one after finishing runner up on The X Factor, Olly Murs has had an unbroken decade of success on my chart, with every single he has released being at least a top 10 hit and fourteen of them landing at my top spot. But the future is now looking uncertain, as since his latest sell out tour finished up in June, he's undergone much-needed surgery for his knee that is leaving him out of action for months and as such, he appears to be taking an indefinite hiatus.

And with the Essex lad now absent from social media and public view since he made the announcement of his break a few weeks back, it means that there's a very real possibility that this single could be the last we hear or see of him on my chart for some time. His swansong for now is a double-a-side of another track from the 'You Know I Know' album, emotive ballad 'Talking to Yourself', backed with a remix of 'That Girl', a track that first appeared on the deluxe edition of his previous album '24 HRS' in 2016, this time featuring a guest appearance from Chinese rapper CORSAK as a tribute to the fact the song took off in that territory after use in a viral video last year and notched up a whopping four billion streams. And all without ever being a single, which it's now been promoted to here.

But even with no promotion due to his indisposal, the single flies to number one this week and writes him further into my record books by becoming his fifteenth such single to do so - the most for any artist ever in my chart history. It also provides him with a second chart topper from this album following the three week stint enjoyed by the first single 'Moves' with Snoop Dogg back in October last year. When we'll hear from or see pop's favourite cheeky chappy again remains to be seen, but for now it seems an opportune moment to toast the decade long career Olly's now enjoyed that many didn't think possible back in 2009. It's been a rollercoaster to say the least.

We should probably take a moment here to talk about Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. Fresh from recieving a whopping four nominations at this year's MTV VMAs, and now in its fourth week, 'Senőrita' remains a top 3 record on my chart. In fact, it's held its #3 berth for two of those last four weeks, and was actually looking likely to stay there earlier in the week, but it now climbs back up to reclaim the #2 entry it made on its debut.

The second biggest new arrival this week comes from P!nk. It's fair to say 2019 has been a stellar year so far for her, and with 'Can We Pretend', the third single from her current album 'Hurts 2B Human' she matches the entry and peak of its title track and previous single by entering at #6. The first single of course was 'Walk Me Home' which spent two weeks at number one in March.

At #10 this week, Jonas Blue returns to my top 10 with his new single 'I Wanna Dance'. An unusual release this one, as for the first time ever the superstar producer and DJ has no guest star on vocals as he usually does, as he takes the mic here too. In truth it's not bad at all and rather calls to mind the days of the late 00s when Calvin Harris still sang on his singles. Top 10 is nothing less than it deserves.

Down at #15 we welcome back a name from a decade ago. 2008 was when we first saw Gabriella Cilmi - then a mere 17 years old - spin off a wealth of top 10 hits from her debut album 'Lessons To Be Learned'. Biggest of all of course, was radio favourite and 00s pop classic 'Sweet About Me', a number one hit which was also my biggest single of that year.

A few more chart toppers appeared for her - 'On A Mission' being the last in March 2010 - but after the relative failure of her second album 'Ten', she all but disappeared off the radar. She now returns to our chart today with what is her eighth top 20 hit, and first in nine years, with 'Ruins'. A new album is purported to follow imminently, even if you suspect it won't have quite the sensation her earlier releases had.

One lady who does have a new album imminently is Louise, her fourth solo effort 'Heavy Love' still a couple of months away from release. 'Lead Me On' is the third single from it, co-written and produced by Clean Bandit no less, and enters at this week's #18 to give her a third top 20 hit following 'Stretch' in March and 'Small Talk' in May.
