Another odd topic (I'm just full of it, me) but this was inspired by Silas saying to me yesterday something like: "I miss songs like Discotheque "
...which got me thinking that Discotheque would come nowhere NEAR 4th these days imo, due to how the contest has evolved into being less 'pure pop' orientated. Songs like 'Raining Diamonds' and 'Good Times' CERTAINLY wouldn't win either. But then, I think a song like 'Nights Like This' by Icona Pop would do better these days (I came 3rd bottom with this). Just intrigued. |

well i think i'm in the new generation so i can't really say - would think that if anything was to happen to my entries that 'sulk' would've had an even bigger lead but i think that's honestly it.

God most of my entries would fail miserably now, there's only a couple that I think could do better now and they are Blänk feat Young Ivy - I'm Going For Your Brother, which was probably slightly too ahead of its time and Fireflies by Still Corners which I know was only a year ago but would probably do a bit better now. And I still don't get how it missed the top ten tbh! It sounds like the sort of thing that Aeroche or Skall might send and take to the top three
The likes of Sheelah and Anna Abreu would be lucky to come low top ten now, whilst some of my other random low top ten finishers like Ria, Katie Cole, Her Majesty & The Wolves and Haloo Helsinki would be DNQ fodder these days I reckon. I've definitely lost my touch in BJSC, it's not that I don't like the songs that do well, it's just that they're not the types of songs that I would tend to send myself so I'm unlikely to get many good results again. |

Most of my old (pre-2013) entries flopped, and if I could send them now, they would still flop. And my hits would flop too (I don't think a song like Shining Heart, which has Alexandra Stan soundalike production, would finish top 20 now).

I think, realistically, there is two halves to Ashton's entries. I think from 'Push The Button' right up to 'Sitting At Home' would probably do about the same although I doubt that Molly would have won and I think that I'd have had a tough time qualifying in XII, XIII and XV. There is enough pop voters for me to have still racked up a decent finish with the likes of 'Warpath' and 'Underwear'. My sound hasn't really changed that much over 6 years but you can see a big step up in quality in the early 20's.
The only dramatically different result I see is 'I Like That' may actually have finished in a position it deserved, i.e. top 10, instead of missing the top30. It will be really interesting to see when Re:LOADED starts hitting BJSC V/VI/VII what effect todays make up would have on those past contests. Can't really tell much from the first few as it all took us a couple of goes to find our feet. (Raining Diamonds is still a total tune) |

I think some of my very earliest 'successes' would be certs to finish near the bottom of a semi-final now - especially Frankie & The Heartstrings which is just a basic landfill indie track, albeit one I still have a soft spot for, that I don't think anyone would deem worthy of more than maybe a point or two now.
On the other hand Joe Goddard's 'Gabriel' remains the most shocked and appalled I've been at a DNQ, mine or otherwise, my favourite of my own entries by far. I'd like to think that would have sailed through to the final these days. Beat Connection's 'In The Water' strikes me as the sort of thing that might do well now too, though I didn't help myself not voting in that contest (Would still have just about DNQed even if I did vote IIRC). POLIÇA possibly similar? Basically there's no justice for me. (Still fully half of my entries have either DNQed or come near the bottom in a one big final, oops) |

BTW I was considering Still Corners at one point as well. Glad I didn't miss out on a big hit there really (plus I was bored of it by the time it was entered anyway, I think I might have not voted for it )

I just CAN'T see it anywhere other than that. I'm talking about Luciana. |

I think pretty much all of my pre-Water To Ice entries (aside from Nightwish) would have been good as dead if they'd been caught in the wrong semi now. That can pretty much be seen with what happened when I sent Echosmith in August, I'm not going to get away with that anymore - none of those were the strongest of left-field pop and they wouldn't have gotten many high points to pull them through, which is pretty much what's happened with every DNQ of mine ever.
Actually, I don't think any of my entries from before this year would do better in today's climate than when they were sent, it seems pretty hostile to near all of them in differing ways. I still love all of them but getting 9 qualifications in a row seems so unreal now, if it had been like it is now from the beginning I'd probably have half of my finalists intact at most. Still, I'll keep TRYING and hope to capture more people's attention someday - in a couple of years. When the rock revolution comes. You've been warned. |

Oh I would've done absolutely terribly had my earliest entries been entered today. No-one would be interested in Franz Ferdinand these days apart from perhaps Isconia and Ashton. And the likes of Phoenix, Sufjan, Florence & The Machine or Fever Ray would be far too cheap - I think my entries years ago were considered vaguely inspired because they differed from the pop norm, and not because they were actually unknown or genuinely different, because they weren't.
I think AlunaGeorge would do a lot better than 9th now, and that was only entered two years ago. |

I sort of joined AS BJSC was changing so I can't really comment much, but I do think Parachute Youth would've done a bit better if I sent it as of right now (no pun please) 17 months on and I'm STILL annoyed at that.

Obviously I've not been here that long, but I like to think Laura Welsh would win now.

If the countries that exist now existed back in the previous contests then I think that Bjork 'Joga' and Crystal Castles 'Vanished' would have probably done quite a bit better than 25th in the contests. 'Tthhee Ppaarrttyy' probably would have qualified. I don't think Ellie or Delphic wouldn't have won, but may have done pretty well - but with the stricter rules would have been vetoed? I'd also like to think that Serephim Suite 'Heart' would have done much better (because it's such a beaut of a song).
The overall sound of "B.a.N.G", definitely in my earlier entries, is certainly more 'in' compared to like four or so years ago when it always seemed to be a result even qualifying because it was so POP POP POP. This post has been edited by Casey__: 22nd October 2013, 12:15 AM |

I suspect, for the most part, I would have done similarly in most cases. Though I would like to think Queen Of Hearts might have managed a little higher than 17th these days.
