BuzzJack Music Forum _ Spice Girls _ Melanie C feat. Sink the Pink - 'High Heels'

Posted by: Voodoo 22nd June 2019, 09:28 AM

Melanie debuted a new song in Brazil yesterday:

The look, the outfit, the ponytail, the choreography... She is in full popstar mode and I'm loving it! w00t.gif

Posted by: Jay ☆ 22nd June 2019, 11:11 AM

I don’t mind the new song, it’s certainly very different for her. I suppose it has the most in common with her Jodie Harsh EP. Need to hear a studio version!

Posted by: sammy01 22nd June 2019, 11:41 AM

That new song is absolutely awful. I feel like I was listening to a song a 12 year old had wrote, the verses are so nothing and awful lyrics. The chorus is mega cringe too.

She looks great though I guess.

Posted by: Blond 2.0 22nd June 2019, 01:58 PM

I'm not crazy about the new song but she looks amazing I hope she keeps the sporty mood forever

Posted by: Piers 23rd June 2019, 04:50 AM

Lol. Mel performing with those drag queens reminds me of when Geri did that in 2001 or so. Don't think video of her G.A.Y. shows before the 2004 one have surfaced...but I remember pics of her performing with the queens. I seem to remember people reporting back at the time it was Who Do You Think You Are.

Anyway. Back to Mel. Maybe you can chalk this up to me having lousy taste...but I love High Heels. Instantly clicked for me on first listen. I think it towers over the dancey stuff she did with Jodie Harsh. I guess this is going to stand as a controversial statement considering the fan reaction so far....but it sounds like a single to me. Regardless. Hope we get to hear the actual track soon. I love how much of a musical chameleon she is.

Posted by: Michael Andrew 23rd June 2019, 09:39 AM

I really like 'High Heels' too. Sounds like a 90's club banger, which I think is a clever move. If she's gonna pick up any new fans, it'll be for her 90s legend status. And for me, it delivers what the fans want.

And she looks absolutely incredible!

Posted by: Mr.X 23rd June 2019, 09:56 AM

She looks amazing and the new song is cute, probably her best dancey/pop stuff since I Turn To You (sorry but never got into Think About It).

The show looks awful though.

Posted by: dannjohn 23rd June 2019, 01:32 PM

I havent heard High Heels but i won’t be surprised if it were a less credible track. Mel’s performing at most Prides this year (more so than usual) and her current music doesn’t seem in tune with the Pride audience (who tbh want ‘I Turn To You’, ‘Never Be The Same Again’ & a SG medley).

The new song called high heels or you gotta love yourself

Posted by: Mr.X 10th August 2019, 06:23 PM

Apparently she is recording a video for High Heels.

A fan has shared a screenshot of the advert to recruit extras for the video. It reads:

"We are casting the new music video for the iconic Mel C in collaboration with Sink The Pink!

High Heels is a fun neoteric, nostalgic riot of a dreamy nght out set in an Art Deco reminiscent meets disco-era gamalzon beauty parlor."

Interesting moves. I'm not a fan of the High Heels from what we have seen on youtube videos of her Pride tour tbh. But I will reserve judgement until I see the video.

Posted by: sammy01 10th August 2019, 08:21 PM

she can keept it, high heels is rubbish.

Posted by: Spiceboy 11th August 2019, 11:02 AM

I'm not a big fan of the song myself, it's ok but nothing amazing, however it got a great reception at Brighton Pride. There was more of a reaction to that than the covers she performed (obviously not including the Spice Girls ones).

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef 11th August 2019, 11:15 AM

I'll have to listen to it ohmy.gif

WOW can't wait to see it

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef 11th August 2019, 03:06 PM

I've listened to it and I like it! BUT I think it should have been a 1999 Spice Girls single on a pop album of collaboration covers / non-covers.

Posted by: Michael Andrew 11th August 2019, 03:07 PM

I'm definitely here for an era that kicks off with 'High Heels'. Melanie C is fully embracing her LGBT icon status and I love it.

Posted by: Spiceboy 19th August 2019, 01:06 AM

Definitely an album coming, but whether it's linked to this single or this is just a stand alone release who knows...

She played High Heels at her last DJ show and it sounds epic cheer.gif

I really wish she was releasing something better than high heels. It with Sink the pink too is so Katie Price releasing another flop single.

High heels should've been released during the pride gigs sleep.gif

You guys dont realise that she cant organize her solo project since she is stuck on Spice Girls plans for next year. There is Vegas residency rumour, tour rumours and maybe other things goin on...... so, how can she release an album not knowing what will happen next year?

But I do believe we will get an answer soon... things are (strangely) too quiet.

High Heels studio version sounds really good, btw.

Theres a video on Instagram. A few seconds but you can hear clearly.
She played as DJ in a party and someone recorded.

Posted by: Mr.X 30th October 2019, 10:34 PM

A fan on Spice Circle went to a Melanie C private members only interview tonight and she confirmed a few things:

1. High Heels coming next wednesday!

2. She has been working on music and plans to tour next year solo.

3. She says she hopes the Spice Girls can continue to be active and she will do her solo career in between (or in paralell, not clear on which)

4. She says the girls didnt have much input in the Return tour and the Viva Forever musical. Those were mainly created by the people they employed, which says a lot. She says the girls came together to create the Spice World 2019 tour and had more input on that.

5. They havent been *officially* approached to do Glastonbury but that Victoria would be up for it...

Thoughts? I feel some of it is positive. Clearly new music coming from her and there seem to be plans for the Spice Girls afoot. My main thing is that it feels like they are an active band again with creative input, which is nice!

Looking forward to hearing the studio version of High Heels! I wonder if it's intended to be the first "proper" single from the upcoming album, or if she's just releasing it for the sake of releasing it, hmm... we'll see. Looking forward to more from her in 2020 cheer.gif

I Hope she will release as a proper single for her last tour, but be seperate from the album. Like 'The Night'

Posted by: Spiceboy 31st October 2019, 09:15 PM

She already knows it isn’t going to chart so I guess she isn’t really bothered...

Posted by: sammy01 1st November 2019, 01:34 PM

I just don't get the high heels release at all. It should have been months ago if at all. I could understand if it was this amazing song but it's a throwaway camp track. It obviously isn't album lead single material either, is it even on the album. So random.

Posted by: Blond 2.0 1st November 2019, 04:52 PM

I think it's just a buzz single and some fans like it so that's why she's releasing it and I don't think it has nothing to with the album unless this album is a dance one

Posted by: sammy01 1st November 2019, 05:23 PM

Then I dont understand the effort of shooting a video (expense) when it could just be treated like Numb was.

Isn't Sink the pink just some drags queens who do drag shows at night clubs? I highly doubt they are rooting the bill for anything.

I can tell this wont be my cup of tea but I hope the video has some replay value or some sort of plot/storyline. Her videos we know are generally low budget but it shouldn't stop a bit of creativity.

I always think of Alanis Morissette with some of her videos as her budgets were getting smaller, Hands clean, Eight easy steps, Crazy all have a interesting and clever videos.

In all honesty, it's not that hard to at least get good cinematography these days when you think about how many YouTubers do this with no budget.

The video looks cheap though but it's only a snippet.

I know not everyone loves High Heels...but based on what I've heard from the live performances, it's my favorite thing she's done in the past ten years next to Think About It and Stupid Game.

It's big and instantly catchy...and it's way better than what anyone would expect from anyone else who hasn't had a UK top ten in 14 years.

Posted by: Michael Andrew 3rd November 2019, 03:13 PM

I wonder if Melanie will do her own remix for this one? I do hope so!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 3rd November 2019, 04:08 PM

I still think she should be releasing her greatest hits with her profile higher since the reunion as I think it would do UK plus give exposure to new tracks such as this.

It is all personal taste but the chorus is pretty rubbish imo on high heels, the lyrics are a bit painful too.

I hate it, I really do. Those lyrics are so bad, it is like a 12 year old wrote them. Saving 5 weeks for a pair of shoes 😫😫😫😫

The chorus is very repetitive and the love yourself bit (the best bit) goes on too long.

I cant ever see myself listening to it ever again. I hope Mel enjoys it because I had a bit of 2nd hand embarrassment listening to it for her.

Love the song. Love the video. It's a camp masterpiece.

Sure the lyrics aren't high-brow. But they are meaningful. It's liberating and joyful.

I'm thrilled to see Melanie owning her sporty spice pop persona in her solo work. It's like she's really accepting her whole self and all she's achieved.

Cute let's just hope the new album is not like that biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mr.X 6th November 2019, 11:36 PM

I really like it actually.

Personally really happy that Mel C has provided something that feels (for her) fresh. Most of her music has been quite same-y for a looooong time now, so this is a bit of a good and welcomed change.

Let's see how it does.

Posted by: Piers 7th November 2019, 04:29 AM

I'm a little surprised this one's so divisive. To me, it's immediately likable and pretty flawlessly catchy. Having heard the actual studio recording now, I can honestly say it's about my 6th favorite of all her singles (not my 6th favorite of her songs in general...but singles?...yeah). I really wish she'd unleashed something like this in the mid-2000s...when she still stood a chance of getting a hit...and could make waves with a big dance song.

I do think the song's far stronger than the video. I don't hate the video or anything. I like that she's enjoying herself and seems to be in her element. I like her little crew. But I do think it could disguise the low budget better. I also wish we could have gotten some big choreography bits with Mel and her crew together...instead of them just doing a few little hand gestures or whatever. She can dance. They can dance. I think it might have been fun to see such a diverse crew all doing a big routine.

But. Whatever. I'm a fan.

Posted by: Spiceboy 7th November 2019, 07:32 AM

I don’t like it think it’s even worse than I want candy, but not as bad as cool as you...

Posted by: Voodoo 7th November 2019, 08:07 AM

Posted by: sammy01 7th November 2019, 08:39 AM

I actually think the worst bit of the video is the bit with the choreography in black & white in front of a curtain. If she had removed that and made it in colour maybe on a stage (nothing fancy, just a stage) it probably would look much better. The black and white cheapens it a lot actually!

The song is a BOP! Whilst it is not her best, it is certainly the best single since the Northern Start era (and yes I am counting Think about It on that too cos she sounds like she is screaming in the chorus on that one!).

FINALLY I can get behind a Melanie C single ahah cheer.gif

Posted by: isanka 7th November 2019, 12:16 PM

She finally have a nice Music Video.
The song is okay, not her best but it never pretend to be. I agree, she should had release it when she was touring, but here it is.

I like the lyrics, it's different. No need another song talking about love again.

For sure but it is a little odd. I mean I know this wont chart but if it is allowed for this release surely chart hits could just tack on a name as a ft and get artists chart hits they had no involvement in.

It was written with Sink The Pink, for Sink The Pink. Sink The Pink is the video prominently. For all we know, they might have collaborated on it as well somehow, like giving ideas, etc. It comes from a body of work that is beyond just the single, but including the Summer Pride tour, etc. They probably also invested in it.

So there you have it. It is a collaboration in various ways and it means everybody gets credited.

Like Jay said, it isnt that deep.

But for the charts credits on a release are the singer and or producer, or singles would have ft the woman who played the triangle or ft the guy who designed the artwork, as they are involved in the making of the product.

It is extremely unusual for a credit to be given to someone not the singer or producer.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 8th November 2019, 12:02 AM

An example I thought of is Tony Christie featuring Peter Kay - Is This the Way to Amarillo - a UK #1 single! Peter Kay just lip synced to it in the music video.

High Heels is the 30th song (out of 85 songs) on New Music Friday UK playlist on Spotify! Too low to make a big splash tbh, but is this the first time she’s been included on this playlist? I can’t recall!

A shame about Version of Me, Anymore in particular didn’t deserve to be snubbed. sad.gif

Hopefully this playlisting is a good sign that Spotify will be more receptive to her forthcoming album! Fingers crossed that High Heels will be included in other playlists too.

That is really nice for Mel, wish for me she was getting this extra exposure with a better song.

I'm a little shocked she hasn't had a CD single ready. I know it isn't going to be a massive seller but she has had months to sort this release a couple of thousand CD singles ready to be shipped signed would have surely done well. Signed CD single, NMF playlisting, downloads released today, who knows I mean she probably still wouldn't have charted but might have shown up in the Monday midweeks.

I'm digging the video. It is shiny, glossy and colorful, which I love. Not to mention that it contains so many GIF-worthy moments. dance.gif

Mel looks better than ever. She is carefree & joyful. The song itself is very uplifting. It is proper dance-pop, and the production sounds immense & euphoric. cool.gif

Her fans always ask for physicals. I don't know why she don't always make it for each release.

I personally hate it. The song is naff those lyrics are just cringe and the video looks cheap and not Mel at all. I’ll be passing this one on, it’s quite frustrating it’s got a bit of publicity that Anymore and Think about

I virtually stan Melanie C (almost as bad as Sammy does Emma, but nobody is that bad), but seriously you compared it to Who do you think you are blink.gif I'm actually wondering if you've seen both videos blink.gif

Posted by: sammy01 8th November 2019, 11:37 PM

The video is cheap, it must have been filmed in a shoebox of a studio because there isnt any shots of Mel and the sink the pink drags queens that are proper full length. It feels absolutely crammed into a tiny space.

Posted by: vibe 9th November 2019, 10:12 AM

We know none of the girls are going to have big nugget videos .

I prefer listening to the song without the video .

Posted by: Michael Andrew 9th November 2019, 10:30 AM

For me, I don't find a big budget impressive. Not sure I understand the preoccupation with that. It's not 1998 anymore.

I enjoy the creativity on a small budget. The lighting, styling and cinematography all show professional technique. Yes, a few of the black and white sections are bit rougher. But that's a small part of a glorious whole.

The concept is strong, the narrative is clear and sporty spice is dancing in a music video again. So much to be grateful for.

She may not have a big budget but videos are super important these days, video views on YouTube count towards UK and US charts.

Posted by: Spiceboy 13th November 2019, 11:34 PM

I actually really like the Pride tour video, was good to watch.

After re-listening to the song I still really don't like it however it's mainly the lyrics that put me off, they are cheesy and naff as hell. The music itself is actually very catchy and the melody of the song is good, just need to change the lyrics I think.

She was on there promoting her solo music, the This Time single release. They showed a clip on the video and I think Graham showed the CD single. It isn't downplaying her success it is just being honest. Emma only got the Royal Albert gig off the back of the Spice World tour, she wasn't getting that gig otherwise. By the looks of things that we wont be getting any spice girls next year both will be back to square one by the end of 2020.

It makes sense. The song was well received by the critics and general mainstream media. About time it gets *some* radio play! It might not be her fans' favourite, but it might just do more of a trick with the general public than her usual sound...

A shame that so many of other radio stations still block solo Spices. Heart FM should be all over this, and it sounds like something BBC1 would play (if it was by, say Katy Perry or some other bad-but-current pop artist.

Anyway, here's hoping this turns Mel's fortunes around a bit! If there is a solo Spice that deserves this, it is her heart.gif

Graham Norton is definitely a much more popular chat show than Jonathan Ross and he always gets amazing guests and music guests so this is a great platform for Melanie. Can’t wait to see her perform and see her on the sofa even if it’s a few minutes.

Happy New Year, everyone 🥳

It just all is so cheap. Twitter tore her to shreds and it isn't like it was being overly harsh. The song is trash, I have no idea who Sink the pink are in terms of overall drag stuff but they aren't very good either.

My favourite tweet was someone saying 'Is mel c really singing about shoes' that about sums it up, what a waste of the goodwill from the Spice tour.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 1st January 2020, 10:22 AM

I enjoyed the performance. Solo Spice Girls get slated on Twitter no matter what... and while there's a few people (out of millions of viewers) who tweet negativity (and no doubt get a kick out of receiving a few likes), there'll be plenty who enjoyed her but don't bother tweeting. I can't take anyone seriously who says she "can't sing", and anyone who writes vile things about her appearance simply isn't worth paying attention to... they'd be lucky to look anywhere near as good as Melanie by the age of 35, let alone 45. Disappointing but sadly not surprising to see vile transphobic and homophobic tweets about Sink the Pink too.

How well do we know any of our Spice Girls? A full two decades into her solo career, Melanie C reintroduced herself to us with “High Heels,” a collab with U.K. queer cabaret collective Sink the Pink. Seasoned by a series of joint performances at Pride festivals from São Paulo to Madrid, their chemistry is effortless on this track, allowing us to see the Sporty One’s inner carefree dancefloor queen, ready to rule the scene for a night or a lifetime. -- Z.M.

I agree about people slating how she looks, she looks amazing for her age. Criticisms of the song are valid though. She did hit 2 or 3 rather dodgy notes last night too, she can clearly sing but it wasn't her best vocal performance.

Posted by: Spiceboy 1st January 2020, 02:01 PM

I enjoyed the performance made me warm to the song a little more, I actually really like the music and the chorus is catchy as anything it’s just the lyrics in the verses I find too cheesy personally.

Got no time for the trolls on twitter though, let’s face it she could have done the best performance in the world and they would still slate her.

I just think people are being way too nice about this performance and song. If an artists you didn't like released High Heels and did that performance, let's say Cheryl Cole would people in here like it.

I love Mel, she is talented but this ain't it. Imagine if that performance new years eve Graham Norton had been a great song like Burn, with a great vocal.

For me Castles by Freya ridings is where Mel should be pitching her music. Her last hit Loving you was of a very similar ilk to Castles too.

I don't know what Cheryl is up to. But I've never seen her do anything this interesting.

With that performance, on that show, Melanie has done something truly beneficial for the LGBT community. Think about the young, queer kids who may have seen that performance. There's such a strong message in those lyrics.

Put on your high heels, be different, love yourself.

I'm not really a fan of Cheryl Cole and I thought the Love made me do it song was crap, however I liked her X Factor performance of it, even thought she got slated (yet another example)

The Spice Girls are of a completely different field to Melanie C. It's still "cool" to slate solo Spice Girl performances Emma didn't get universal praise for her The One show performance and Geri got slated for her Wannabe performance on Australian X Factor (which I thought was lovely)...

The ones saying she couldn't sing... I mean ridiculous. Most were actually transphobic comments about Sink The Pink which say's it all. Some didn't like the song which I don't particularly like it either. The performance itself was good though.

The UK has had a very progressive attitude towards drag and trans. Lets not forget that during the 90s Lily Savage was one of the hottest TV personalities who me and my family sat down to watch on saturday nights present Blankety Blank a game show. Lily however was quick witted and used her drag in very clever ways.

Oh my point was more drag queens, like so much of everything, has been degraded and brought down to the lowest common denominator. Sink the pink seem to serve zero purpose, they aren't as good as trained dancers, they don't sing backing vocals, they aren't witty or contribute anything bar a slight shock value of men in skimpy women's clothes.

In a world where F1 has done away with women in skimpy clothes on the grid, because they serve no purposes bar to titillage which offends some people, I'm not surprised skimpy clothes men serving little purpose offends some too.

Posted by: JaneJ 3rd January 2020, 12:05 AM

Most people tend to confused voice tone with singing skills, if they don't like the voice then that artist is not a good singer. Melanie can sing very well but her tone could put some people off as a solo and that performance on Graham she was obviously nervous, it was her first major slot in ages, she wasn't at her best vocally. As for Sink the Pink, they're just not on that level yet, too amateur but I love their fun positive spirits. The choreograph was also bad, again too amateur. The lyrics were a bit cringe too, put those all together I can see the negative comments came from and if you look at other performances on Graham such as, Dua Lipa, Kylie, even Niall or Harry, you'll see the differences. I hope she gets another shot when the album comes out and slays.

Posted by: tommie 3rd January 2020, 12:11 AM

To be fair - can Melanie C afford dancers beyond Sink the Pink? Would she get these promo slots without them? I'd say no. They're clearly a collective that's getting a bit of hype behind the scenes, so it's not a bad thing for Melanie to get in on the ground floor, even if it won't give her a hit with High Heels.

And yeah, a lot of people do confuse not liking a voice with bad vocals. With that said, there was a few trip ups, but no worse than your usual pop star performance.

Posted by: JaneJ 3rd January 2020, 12:22 AM

I was talking about overall performance, it looked too amateur. And with her new management team plus spice buzz I'm sure she could get that major slot without Sink the Pink.

Lily Savage was hardly a good representation of real LGBT people. She was a comedy character. And while I appreciate a good comedy drag act, without the context of real LGBT people on the telly, it was about as progressive as a panto dame.

Sink The Pink on the other hand, demonstrate that real queer people are relevant, empowered and talented. They are not just a punchline in a very tired, old joke.

Posted by: sammy01 3rd January 2020, 01:29 PM

Sink the pink demonstrates talent how? They literally are only getting attention because they are men in skimpy women's clothes. Are they great dancers, no, have they sung a note, no. There wasn't any artistry in their performance, they just strutted and pranced around.

Drag queens used to be funny, great performers or singers, Sink the pink are the Instagram answer to drag queens which is posers.

The annoying thing is Mel has herself lowered down to that level too for this release with the most basic lyrics and song of her career.

But drag queens are not supposed to just be funny that’s what he was saying, the point is getting representation of drag queens who simply feel happy dressed as they are not just comedians.

Anyway it’s the highest charting solo spice single on the download charts since Loving You so it’s clearly done it’s jobs as let’s face it none of the girls are ever likely to chart on the main chart again now.

FYI:

Drag = Performer
Transvestite = Gets sexually off on dressing like the other sex
Transsexual = Feels / Wants to be or present as the other sex.

Of course these intersect often but I'm surprised how often people get these definitions wrong.

Posted by: Spiceboy 3rd January 2020, 11:37 PM

Technically anyone who wears make up is a drag as it’s the act of pretending to be something you’re not through make up. Everyone who wears make up does it to present themselves “better” or express themselves. Both men and women are technically drags.

This has finally passed the 1 million streams mark on Spotify! Her second this era (behind Who I Am).

That FuturPop 2020 Award which is in France? Is it a proper award or just an online radio thing?

Anyway, Melanie's High Heels won 'Best International Clip'

The worst song she's ever released as a proper single, she is so much better than this. Thankfully she righted the ship with her best single since her NS days with Who I Am after it.

Some of the lyrics to the song are so bad.

I actually quite like High Hells. It's a cute song!

I agree it’s terrible! Up there with I want candy as utter rubbish.

The song is not bad sonically. The lyrics though.. so cringy. Thank God it wasn’t included in the album.

I like it, it’s feel good and has a positive sentiment delivered in a camp/lighthearted way. Definitely far from being her worst single for me!

I still like this! It especially reminds me of enjoying those final months before shit hit the fan with COVID.

Of course the material she released for the album afterwards was a lot better

I grew to love it!!

My friends (non mel c fans) love this one !!

It's definitely not one of her best songs, but I've always loved it. It was such a camp surprise.
