In what's got to be one of the speediest turnarounds from the announcement of the winner, RTP have confirmed that Lisbon is our host city for 2018. I guess this means we need a new Green Room?

I love one article I've read

QUOTE
The Portuguese national broadcaster has been given a booklet of information from the European Broadcasting Union, regarding the basic criteria of what is required for hosting the contest. The European Broadcasting Union according to the Director General has already suggested that the Meo Arena in Lisbon be used as the venue for the competition.

laugh.gif

Poor Portugal with no previous hosting experience kink.gif I doubt the Swedes needed such a booklet, they probably wrote it.

Posted by: Silas 15th May 2017, 03:48 PM

laugh.gif if one existed before 2013 and 2016 then it was no doubt shredded by SVT!!

Lisboa it is! We have an idea on dates so I don't I can get on booking.com before it's just hostels left

Posted by: gooddelta 15th May 2017, 03:52 PM

Could just book a free cancellation hotel for each week in May and just cancel three of them when dates are confirmed! biggrin.gif

I don't know if I'll go, though I love Portugal (depends how my finances are nearer the time), but I will book a hotel just in case.

I dread to think what Portugal will do with their AQ to the final, I'm not really expecting them to become a new powerhouse nation, so could be a Makemakes type disaster!

You know it is weird, a lot of the parallels with Austria as the host country are being born out. I guess they too won with a slightly "larger than life" singer (albeit in a different way) and hadn't counted on ever needing to have to throw together a Eurovision hosting any time soon. Will be interesting to see how they manage as I don't think they're counting on ever having to do this again!

I'm hoping that they at least use that AQ spot to go down in flames with one of their lovably weird numbers that they occasionally throw out (now just watch them completely change their entire selection method and pick a 100% contemporary pop song!) but odds are they'll show why they hadn't won in the previous 50+ years with their AQ spot.

I touched on this with Lex yesterday, their previous best result was followed by a last place/nil points the year after and it wouldn't be a stretch for them to end up repeating that.

I'm interested in going for a few days, would be fun even if rehearsal tickets are all I managed to get in the mad rush.

I would imagine it will be something that stands out like a sore thumb anyway, like most of their entries in the past 20 years!

I'm also interested to see how they host, I initially thought it could be fairly low budget/cheap looking in a way not seen since the Baltic efforts in the early 00s. But I don't think the broadcaster would ever live that down and standards have risen so much since that I'm sure they'll manage (or be heavily encouraged if it shapes up weakly and the EBU intervene) to pull something respectable out of the bag.

(double post)

Posted by: BillyH 15th May 2017, 05:53 PM

Yeah I can see this being much harder to get tickets for than Kiev, it's not been in this part of the continent for decades so thousands of Spanish and Portuguese fans have their first chance to see it next year.

Regarding accomodation, my hostel in Stockholm in 2016 cost something painful like £25 per night (booked in November the previous year when I got my ticket), whereas my private room in Kiev, booked around February/March, cost £6. Presumably Lisbon will be somewhere in between...

Posted by: Iz~ 15th May 2017, 06:01 PM

I really hope Portugal put a bit of a unique spin on things with hosting next year, I couldn't really call how they'll begin to approach this, but hopefully it should be a lot of fun. And I do expect them to go with something disastrous for the host entry but that will be part of the charm. Probably won't be as boring as the Makemakes but nothing that could be in any way competitive (let's see how wrong I am in 10 months).

Posted by: LexC♀ 15th May 2017, 06:56 PM

I'm also going to do all that's in my power to do to go to Lisbon for next year although, as somebody pointed out above, it's likely to be a bit of a death match to actually get tickets. I might end up doing a bit of a Ryan style halfway deal and get tickets for the semis/the jury final but be back in the UK in time to catch the final on television since that means still feeling the vibe but a bit easier to get tickets.

Posted by: DNQrella 16th May 2017, 07:12 AM

Or you can get FREE tickets for the dress rehearsals if the paying ones will get sold out quickly. Same shit really. Although i want to be in the arena during the actual show one day <3

Yay a Buzzjack Lisboa meet up!!! Hopefully I will have moved to Spain by that time so it's easy to get there too yay

Posted by: Martyn 16th May 2017, 08:56 PM

After loving Stockholm last year Lisbon is on the cards next year.

Posted by: mdh 20th May 2017, 07:13 PM

Off topic but the winner of Junior Eurovision 2015 is on BGT :') I'm sure Ryan will be happy.

I've already spread my excitement in the Junior Eurovision thread! heart.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 22nd June 2017, 10:04 PM

So, the Eurovision DVD is out tomorrow...but it's £29.99 on Amazon and £33.99 on HMV, why on earth is it so expensive this year? It's usually no more than £15. Don't think I'll be bothering at that price.

Posted by: Ryan. 24th July 2017, 09:02 PM

It looks like it is Lisbon's MEO after all!

https://www.escxtra.com/2017/07/24/lisbon-host-eurovision-2018/

Posted by: Ryan. 25th July 2017, 05:19 PM

Lisbon officially confirmed for 8/10/12 May, MEO Arena not yet confirmed but surely obvious. I really hope the theme art in the end of this video will be the official theme art! heart.gif

Posted by: LexC 25th July 2017, 05:36 PM

Yeah I'm liking that watercolour/ocean theme, very summery!

Posted by: gooddelta 25th July 2017, 05:54 PM

Predictable but a great decision... and for the first time since Malmo it won't clash with a print expo that I have to go to every May, which always similarly conveniently darts around the calendar and various European cities to land on the same week as Eurovision. However this time it's going to be the following week, so I have provisionally booked a Lisbon hotel with free cancellation, but whether I can afford to go when the time comes will be another story! I do love Portugal though <3

Posted by: AdamAloud 26th July 2017, 11:54 AM

Only 289 days to go until the grand final! cheer.gif

blueticket.pt isn't ready for dis

guys, get there early as there's some queueing system in place for ppl who arrive early. not sure if it's like that every year and if arriving a minute early is the same as 2 hours in advance but still x

Posted by: ionderella 30th November 2017, 10:05 AM

the system is absolute BULLSHIT

pretty much put last in the queue (20k people WHUT) even though i've been on the site for 2 hours

should've done the same on mobile and ipad, shit

Posted by: Styles Bilinski 30th November 2017, 10:06 AM

I'm place 6042 in the queue on the iPad and 19629 on my laptop (where I went on to the site a couple of minutes earlier so clearly the time of arrival makes no difference lmao)

Posted by: ionderella 30th November 2017, 10:07 AM

lucky bitch

i don't get why call it a QUEUE if arriving early doesn't f***ing matter

Posted by: BillyH 30th November 2017, 10:08 AM

Your queue number - 17880 laugh.gif Not happening for me today then.

Last year I gave up after an hour, checked back around midnight and got a ticket straight away - that was a lucky fluke though and all tickets went on sale on the same day, this is just standing.
Kiev sold really low in the end - I remember when the Semi-Final tickets were discounted to €17 because the arena was half empty. This one will be busier I think because Portugal...will try again on the 20th!

Posted by: ionderella 30th November 2017, 10:33 AM

all reportedly sold out to less than 500 people

such f***ing shambles

Posted by: ionderella 30th November 2017, 10:58 AM

i f***ing cannot

the next round is on 20th December and I will be LITERALLY flying at that VERY MOMENT. WHAT THE f***

the only hope is fan accreditation and thankfully in Russia there's not much competition for those but who f***ing knows

Posted by: ionderella 30th November 2017, 11:35 AM

viagogo selling the tickets for x3 prices

pieces of shit

Posted by: BillyH 30th November 2017, 11:57 AM

I hope you get a ticket - for Stockholm 2016 I missed out on the Grand Final but got the jury final easily, and a ticket for the Tele2 Arena next door which had live performances from Carola, Loreen and Sanna Nielsen, plus the Swedish voting and a bit with Mans on the live show where I'm on camera for about 30 seconds!!

As mentioned more tickets appear on the site at random times (how I got lucky for Kiev), so even if you miss out on the 20th it's best to check every now and again. Don't bother with the touts on Viagogo unless in very very last resort.

Just noticed the queue got paused when the tickets sold out, so I'm still in the 16,000s...surely that isn't going to last until the next lot of tickets go on sale?

Posted by: ionderella 30th November 2017, 12:27 PM

Pretty sure they will just renew the queue anyway next time since it's pretty unfair to people unable to have been online today or to people who have been drawn in the second half

never ever buying tickets off touts. they can burn in hell smile.gif

Posted by: cqmerqn 30th November 2017, 09:25 PM

How much are tickets? I would love to go.

Posted by: BillyH 1st December 2017, 01:22 AM

THEY'RE BACK ON SALE AND I JUST GOT A TICKET!!!!

I swear I'm not joking! My wallet is empty but who cares biggrin.gif Lisbon's happening for me!!

Posted by: Styles Bilinski 1st December 2017, 01:45 AM

I think...I managed to buy one too??

Nothing was showing as available when I first saw your post, but 15 minutes later and having done a few refreshes, one came up and I managed to nab it biggrin.gif Tbh I'm still a bit dazed and not sure whether Blueticket is having us on

Thank you BillyH <3

Posted by: ionderella 25th December 2017, 03:07 PM

My boyfriend was like number 3k but didn't manage to buy the tickets sad.gif I was literally flying over Europe at that moment so couldn't participate ugh. I hope some final show tickets for the next wave are available.

The way their queue system works is so flawed. Either way I got me some family final standing tickets plus I will apply for fan accreditation which I easily got last time so hopefully I'll get to watch all the performances live regardless.

3/3 is looking to be quite huge

Posted by: LexC 19th February 2018, 01:05 PM

The vibe from what's been selected so far (and what's likely to be selected) seems to be very SRS BSNS. Seems like the ideal configuration for Jessica Mauboy to do extremely well in if she goes with a fun, uptempo pop song (which she will if she knows what's good for her!)

Posted by: Ryan. 19th February 2018, 07:18 PM

I've had a feeling all season that a mid to uptempo female commercial pop song will win this year, Jessica, Saara or Eleni seem the most likely to give us that (and Asmik if she can win in Armenia).

Well if there's one thing we're overdue it's a winner that's beyond the stars. 1944 was decent-ish but last year's winner was literally like taking Xanax.

Posted by: Midge 24th February 2018, 11:04 PM

I disagree, I think every winner this decade has its own unique charm and was the best or one of the best entries that year. Azerbaijan the weakest, but 2011 was also the weakest year.

Posted by: Ryan. 11th March 2018, 04:35 PM

In the summer of 2014 (less than 4 years ago), today's current top 5 in the odds had a Eurovision record as follows:

1. Israel
Had failed to qualify for the past four years in a row

2. Bulgaria
Did not participate in 2014 after withdrawing following 6 consecutive non-qualifications

3. Czech Republic
Had not participated since 2009 following three non-qualifications out of a possible three

4. Estonia
Decent record in context, finally recovering after 6 non-qualifications out of 7 between 2003 and 2010 but still only 2 top 10 finishes since Sahlene in 2002

5. Australia
Not eligible to take part in Eurovision
