Sooo looking forward to this season - I think it's going to be the most exciting since 2009.

Williams look likely to confirm Renault test-driver Sergey Sirotkin in that 2nd seat after all the speculation over whether it'll be Robert Kubica, Paul di Resta, Pascal Wehrlein or Daniil Kvyat laugh.gif

Posted by: MvG501 16th January 2018, 12:57 PM

Williams have confirmed Sirotkin for the second seat with Robert Kubica as their reserve driver.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 17th January 2018, 07:20 PM

Looks like we're on the hunt for a new 3rd driver then!! Not surprised this is how it played out. Kubica is fab for PR for them, and their Martini sponsorship, and then it does appear that Sirotkin was genuinely quicker on the data - does explain why Renault hesitated and pushed for Sainz as part of the deal to allow TR out of their supply deal.

Interesting there from motorsport.com on the McRenault adaptation that reveals a little more detail about the differences in packaging between the different manufacturers and then the impact that has on the car itself. Also explains why the Merc had to run with a long wheelbase last year compared to the Ferrari/Renault cars

Following proposals Liberty Media have made to broadcasters to make F1 coverage more exciting...

1. Making the start time of European races an hour later in the hope of attracting a bigger audience - so a typical start would be 2pm in the UK, rather than 1pm
2. Races to start at 10-past the hour rather than on it
3. Bahrain to become a full night race rather than start at twilight
4. Improved engine sound from repositioned on-board microphones
5. Make the cars look faster with different camera angles and static cameras
6. Playing a soundtrack of music at occasional parts of the race
7. A highlights reel to play at regular intervals during the live broadcast
8. A potential deal with Netflix for behind-the-scenes footage

1 - Meh no big deal really
2 - why tho? seems utterly f***ing pointless
3 - I have a better idea for Bahrain. Never hold a Grand Prix there again magic.gif
4 - Oh wow. big deal
5 - Not the issue. Issue is the fact cars can't follow closely enough to overtake and that its basically a procession behind an overly dominant team lead by an arrogant prick
6 - This is why American's aren't allowed nice things. Stick to Nascar
7 - f*** me. No. Stick to replays of things that were missed because we're watching dickhead in clear air do literally nothing of note, or better yet show them in the first place
8 - As Jake says, this one actually has merit.

Bahrain and Baku?! Baffling choices. Both should be wiped from the calendar as soon as possible

Posted by: Dobbo 29th January 2018, 06:28 PM

Tbf Baku was the best race by a country mile last year although time will tell whether that was the exception rather than the norm (see Valencia 2012 as another example).

Barhain is usually a bore but the worst offender is still abu Dhabi, shocking that gets the season finale.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 29th January 2018, 06:33 PM

The year before was such a disappointment. Qualifying was more exciting than the race which is why I’m inclined to think it’s more a Valencia than a Canada

Posted by: MvG501 29th January 2018, 10:40 PM

I just think its sad that in all the years of "the picks" i.e. BBC/Sky and C4/Sky sharing, the Australian GP has never been live on the terrestrial broadcaster.

especially when you’d think it’d be the most obvious to be on BBC/C4 to get people invested/interested in the rest of the season..

Alonso confirmed to be competing in WEC for Toyota this year and next due to the shift of the season to a summer to summer format meaning he'll get two shots at Le Mans.

Not too sure what to think regarding grid girls. Interesting to see if other series get rid of them. First dart walk on girls and now the grid girls. F1 has always had glamour.

I have a feeling they may end up reversing this decision. There's barely any women in F1 as it is, and the Powers that Be have just sacked the majority of them. Not that I care either way, as my enjoyment of F1 has never hinged on the existence of Pit Girls anyway.

Posted by: MvG501 31st January 2018, 09:06 PM

My enjoyment in F1 has hasn't hinged on pit girls either, probably was going to happen at some point.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 1st February 2018, 07:12 PM

I agree with stopping the practice. They are there for no other reason for creepy old men to have a perv at some attractive young women. It’s creepy and exploitative and belongs in the trash.

However. I think Liberty have missed the mark here. Don’t see why they couldn’t announce a global fan lottery (F1 is hardly a povo sport) where fans can be the ones to hold the marker for their hero. What F1 fab wouldn’t want to do that? Get paddock club access for the race weekend and spend build up in the thick of the action?

Get young fans to meet their heroes would work.

Stupid with the race starting at 10 past the hour, pointless as anything.

Formula 1 is to replace 'grid girls' with a new programme called 'grid kids' this season.

F1 bosses plan to use budding racing drivers "to make the pre-race ceremony more relevant and interesting for fans, especially the younger ones".

The children used will be competitors in karting or junior categories, chosen by national motorsport authorities.

It looks like for the first time since the hybrids appeared, Renault are leading the engine mileage chart!!!

Looked like a strong day for Renault F1 too which is encouraging for me.

I love that there’s new helmet cams! There’s some fab footage around. Being able to actually see where they’re looking is pretty cool as you can see them looking for the apex and the when they switch from apex to apex in combinations of corners

Hoping this season although unlikely that there at least five teams going for the win this season. What would you like the order to be on bases of how competitive teams are?

Myself:

Red Bull
Ferrari
Mercedes
McLaren
Renault

Force India

Williams
Toro Rosso
Haas

Sauber

The third day of testing in Barcelona has been delayed to snowy conditions.

Posted by: Juranamo 28th February 2018, 10:37 AM

I reckon:

Mercedes
Ferrari
McLaren (Stoffel did well yesterday!)
Red Bull
Renault
Force India - or whatever they rename themselves as before Australia!
Williams
Toro Rosso
Sauber
Haas

Still early days ofc, and tough to gauge really due to the current conditions in Cataluña!

Posted by: Mack. 2nd March 2018, 08:54 PM

And once again it appears Mercedes will be amongst the front again.

We're underway, FP1 has finished! We can't jump to too many conclusions after one FP session but at the top as usual Hamilton reigns supreme; Red Bull and Ferrari look on a par a few tenths down the road; and the midfield battle is once again a further second back - albeit a lot tighter than last year which will be incredibly exciting.

I'm liking the new-look graphics this year!

Posted by: Midge 25th March 2018, 03:27 AM

Nobody bothered about the new season starting? ohmy.gif

That was some shunt for Bottas, and some lap for Lewis! I think the gap is a case of Lewis pulling it out of the bag and the others not doing so - but I think the real gap was still about 3-4 tenths of a second (given Raikkonen has qualified 2nd of the next lot). Love how close the Ferrari and Red Bulls were - within 0.1s of each other on their best qualifying laps. Haas look like a surprise package but I expect them to fall back through the grid as the year goes on. Force India seem to have dropped from 4th to 7th best team at the moment, while Sauber have made leaps up to the back of the grid - they have managed to occupy the 9th row of the grid, beating the Williams of Sirotkin and the Toro Rosso of Gasly!

Danny Ric has received a 3 place grid penalty for 'driving too fast under red flag conditions'. For me it should've been a warning and a fine at most. They haven't got the fans best interests at heart by throwing out such a harsh penalty this early. Ridiculous. Mercedes have had to change Bottas' gearbox, so he has received a 5 place grid penalty.

Expected Australian GP grid:

1. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes
2. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari
3. Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari
4. Max Verstappen, Red Bull
5. Kevin Magnussen, Haas
6. Romain Grosjean, Haas
7. Nico Hulkenberg, Renault
8. Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull
9. Carlos Sainz, Renault
10. Fernando Alonso, McLaren

11. Stoffel Vandoorne, McLaren
12. Sergio Perez, Force India
13. Lance Stroll, Williams
14. Esteban Ocon, Force India
15. Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes
16. Brendon Hartley, Toro Rosso
17. Marcus Ericsson, Sauber
18. Charles Leclerc, Sauber
19. Sergey Sirotkin, Williams
20. Pierre Gasly, Toro Rosso

Posted by: Severin 25th March 2018, 10:44 PM

Really glad Vettel won but let's face it, that was another dull race. Compare that with the opening Indycar race which featured 366 on track passes, 11 lead changes and a rookie driver about to win the race until he got taken out with a couple of laps to go.

Still, hopefully Ferrari can build on that win and not blow their own chances prematurely for the second year in a row. Nice to see Alonso back in a car capable of a (lucky?) podium this year

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 25th March 2018, 11:12 PM

More overtakes than last year but yeah Australia is never the most thrilling of tracks for racing.

Posted by: Mack. 26th March 2018, 07:40 AM

Apart from the two Haas stopping, who were desperately unlucky. It was a very boring race. Hardly any overtaking. I think the first legitimate overtake was Ricciardo on Lap 5.

Good to see Ferrari win the first race of the season, the Haas cars look quick they look the best of the midfield at the moment. A solid effort from Renault with both drivers in the points.

Great effort from Alonso to hold off Verstappen for 5th.

I find it bizarre that a car stopping near the track surface was considered a 'major incident' from the graphics.

Posted by: Mack. 26th March 2018, 10:46 PM

I know it's all about regulations nowadays, but or the life of me I honestly cannot see how somebody in second place, "desperate" for a win and his 5th world championship can ease off to save engines, fuel and tyres.
If I was in 2nd place looking for a win, I'd be looking to put the fear of Christ up the geezer in front.
It's not racing anymore.

Posted by: Midge 27th March 2018, 03:08 AM

It does feel a lot more about tactics and careful mathematical planning and constant recalculation. Which is okay with me. But there is a huge flaw in the virtual safety car ruling with regards to the pit lane speed - Vettel should NOT have been able to come in and get out ahead of Hamilton given the gap prior to Hamilton's stop.

Bahrain is a horrendous circuit and Grand Prix imo

I think we might see some variation on the early non-power circuits but this is just gonna be a 4th year of boring processions that any Tom dick or Harry could win as long as they were in the merc. Red Bull won 4 in a row but it was never like this

Liberty Media's proposals:

QUOTE
Formula 1's proposals at a glance

Key strategic initiatives
Power units (PU)
• The PU must be cheaper, simpler, louder, have more power and reduce the necessity of grid penalties.
• It must remain road relevant, hybrid and allow manufacturers to build unique and original PU.
• New PU rules must be attractive for new entrants and Customer teams must have access to equivalent performance.

Costs
• We believe how you spend the money must be more decisive and important than how much money you spend.
• While there will be some standardised elements, car differentiation must remain a core value
• Implement a cost cap that maintains Formula 1 position as the pinnacle of motorsport with a state-of-the-art technology.

Revenues
• The new revenue distribution criteria must be more balanced, based on meritocracy of the current performance and reward success for the teams and the Commercial Rights Holder.
• F1's unique, historical franchise and value must and will still be recognised.
• Revenue support to both cars and engine suppliers.

Sporting and technical rules & regulations
• We must make cars more raceable to increase overtaking opportunities.
• Engineering technology must remain a cornerstone but driver's skill must be the predominant factor in the performance of the car.
• The cars must and will remain different from each other and maintain performance differentiators like aerodynamics, suspensions and PU performance. However, we believe areas not relevant to fans need to be standardised.

Governance
• A simple and streamline structure between the teams, the FIA and Formula 1.

What do you think?

Posted by: Midge 6th April 2018, 03:47 PM

I think it's a good proposal but I can see Mercedes and Ferrari kicking off about a cost cap.

Posted by: Dobbo 6th April 2018, 04:41 PM

I mean yes it sounds great in theory but in practice it's a mere pipedream. The thing is it was going in the right direction as a spectacle a while back when they brought in KERS & DRS and all the on-track overtaking records tumbled but season after season now we're going backwards. The whole hybrid era has been a terrible idea & we won't see races full of overtakes for the foreseeable future. Ok, at least Lewis has got 3 titles out of it but for those not fans of Merc they ain't going anywhere.

And cost caps? Don't make me laugh laugh.gif Ferrari & Mercedes stick 2 fingers up to that & Liberty sit RIGHT back down again.

Posted by: Mack. 7th April 2018, 12:10 AM

Look what happened in 2009, the last time cost caps were mentioned.

Hamilton faces a five place grid penalty for a gearbox change.

Posted by: Dobbo 8th April 2018, 04:58 PM

Fair play, an actual semi-interesting Bahrain GP. I knew Vettel was never under threat at the end as we've seen many times in recent seasons overtaking at the front is nigh-on impossible. Track position is absolutely everything.

Decent show for Gasly though! Honda-power getting a top 4 after McLaren ditch them laugh.gif Bit of a stinker for parent team RBR! Can't see Danny Ric taking much more of this...

Also can whatever is stretching this page plz be fixed? teresa.gif

What has happened to Williams? Only team not to score a single point yet.

Stroll and Sirotkin were the last two today too.

What a inspiring duo for Williams. Hardly.

Posted by: Mack. 8th April 2018, 07:01 PM

Terrific result and weekend for Gasly with finishing fourth.

Posted by: Midge 8th April 2018, 08:49 PM

WHAT A RACE today, seriously, I was gripped from start to finish! Proper nailbiter. I think that Hamilton, Ricciardo or Verstappen in Bottas's shoes would've won that in the same situation, I'm afraid.

Williams are looking like facing a potential last place this season. They've been going backwards and now they've lost the experience of Massa. I think both Williams and Force India will struggle this year. Sauber are going to make leaps and bounds with their new Alfa Romeo partnership.

Incredible for Gasly and Toro Rosso Honda - what a shocker that has been this weekend.

Posted by: Midge 9th April 2018, 12:14 PM

Given the field behind the big 3 look ready to have a pretty exciting scrap, I decided to look at how the 2017 season would look if we erased Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull from the results.

Across the 20 races, we'd have seen victories for:

Felipe Massa (Williams) - Australia, Bahrain, Brazil (3)
Carlos Sainz Jr. (Toro Rosso) - China, Monaco, Singapore (3)
Sergio Pérez (Force India) - Russia, Spain, Canada, Malaysia (4)
Lance Stroll (Williams) - Azerbaijan (1)
Romain Grosjean (Haas) - Austria (1)
Nico Hulkenburg (Renault) - GB, Belgium, UAE (3)
Fernando Alonso (McLaren) - Hungary (1)
Esteban Ocon (Force India) - Italy, Japan, USA, Mexico (4)

That's 8 different drivers across 6 different teams, quite a spread! Only Sauber would've failed to win a race.

In the championship, Force India were run away winners, with a few 1-2s. Sergio Pérez led the championship for the most part, with Esteban Ocon nipping ahead after Italy and USA only to lose out. (In brackets were their overall finish in the championship)

1 (7) Sergio PÉREZ - Force India - Mercedes - 317
2 (8) Esteban OCON - Force India - Mercedes - 300
3 (11) Felipe MASSA - Williams - Mercedes - 217

It got me thinking, perhaps having a 'B-League' championship would be fun. So we'd have the overall championship like normal, and then a B-League system for the rest of the teams to fight for honours. Though that would only work under the current circumstances. I'll post an update on how the B-league would be shaping up after the Chinese GP this weekend. Thus far we've had victories for Fernando Alonso (McLaren) and Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso) and it looks as though it will be much tighter this season.

4 (9) Carlos SAINZ JR. - Toro Rosso - Ferrari / Renault - 184
5 (10) Nico HÜLKENBURG - Renault - 170
6 (13) Romain GROSJEAN - Haas - Ferrari - 149
7 (12) Lance STROLL - Williams - Mercedes - 138
8 (14) Kevin MAGNUSSEN - Haas - Ferrari - 117
9 (15) Fernando ALONSO - McLaren - Honda - 99
10 (16) Stoffel VANDOORNE - McLaren - Honda - 91

11 (19) Daniil KVYAT - Toro Rosso - Ferrari - 70
12 (17) Jolyon PALMER - Renault - 68
13 (18) Pascal WEHRLEIN - Sauber - Ferrari - 41

Thanks for doing this, Lenny.

It is very interesting to see what it have looked like without the "Big Three". It's great that the midfield is closely tight together. A good couple of points for Sauber with 9th place for Marcus Ericsson. First time he scored since 2015.

Posted by: Midge 11th April 2018, 10:45 AM

Yes - also I thought it was interesting as to just how far ahead of Lance Stroll that Felipe Massa pulled. One place and 3 points apart with the big 3 included, but with them excluded Felipe was absolutely miles ahead.

Yeah it was an incredible race today. I can't imagine what Danny would be able to do in a Merc or a Ferrari. Those passes were amazing, just a shame that Max doesn't know the definition of patience otherwise it probably would have been a Red Bull 1-2

Posted by: Midge 15th April 2018, 10:10 AM

Another incredible race; thoroughly enjoyed that. Was enjoying it enough at the point Bottas managed to undercut Vettel and then pass Raikkonen without losing his lead over Seb, let alone the rest.

Always delightful when Danny Ric manages to win the race.

Max is continuing to show his immaturity this season. Though he can win races and is obviously fast, he must've cost the team so many points by now. I'd say he lost a couple of points today but Red Bull would've been on for a certain 1-2 without his collision with Vettel, and in fact he would likely have won without the needless overtake manoeuvre on Lewis that went wrong.

I'll update the B-league results and standings shortly!

I'll ask before knowing the result, but is it worth watching?

Posted by: Dobbo 15th April 2018, 12:45 PM

100%^

I unfortunately found out the winner before watching the race but it didn't make it any less enthralling. In fact I was mulling over how the f*** has he won from back in sixth? But a Toro Rosso collision sparking a Safety Car which massively benefited the 2 RBRs thinking.gif I smell a conspiracy (I'm joking btw).

Absolutely delighted Danny Ric pulled it off - he ALWAYS wins the exciting races, he absolutely schooled Verstappen in the art of overtaking today, but a big thank you to him for taking Vettel out!

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 15th April 2018, 01:15 PM

Danny Ric is the overtake master. Putting one in on turn 6 was a special move.

Defo worth the watch Mack! It’s not often I’ve said that this past 4 years!!!

Funny how when merc struggle and are on par with Ferrari and RBR the races are always more exciting. Hamilton also throws a massive strop which is entertaining as hell. I just cackle every time he cries on team radio when he’s not in the lead. Vettels team radio meltdown tho I timed to perfection. I counted down to the start of that laugh.gif we all knew that was coming when max lunged. Fair play tho, Vettel took it well after and his comments to the media were tame and fair

Thanks Lenny/Midge for the B-League! Great to see Renault firmly on top. It’s fab to have them back as a constructor. Rooting for lotus wasn’t the same and I had to take RBR in 2015 when Enstone betrayed the cause for a year

Alonso’s move on anyone is worth watching. He must be enjoying have a car capable of overtaking rather than being overtaken again

Posted by: Mack. 15th April 2018, 05:31 PM

Fantastic race, some quality moves from Ricciardo there, deserved to win. Max once again taking a risk too many with his overtaking moves.

Yeah it's amazing seeing Fernando in a car capable of overtaking. Give him a car and he'll drive the wheels off it. Although you could tell the move was on Vettel as he cut across him so hard! No love lost there at all

Posted by: Dobbo 15th April 2018, 07:56 PM

Well let's just give this some context. As nice a move it was vettel had a damaged car. And it was a bit cheeky, had max pulled that move everyone would be up in arms.

Posted by: Severin 15th April 2018, 08:11 PM

Not certain that Vettel's car was particularly damaged but he was definitely struggling with his tyres near the end. I agree it was... a forceful move but as far as I'm concerned we need more of that from the drivers.

Posted by: Mack. 17th April 2018, 11:24 AM

It was quite a brilliant move from Alonso on Vettel. Verstappen could have won the race possibly if he haven't had made those two mistakes. A weird incident with the Toro Rosso guys there. Gasly the hero from Bahrain trying a risky move on Hartley.

Posted by: Mack. 17th April 2018, 10:31 PM

I think once again Raikkonen missed out on a potential victory there in China.

Posted by: Mack. 18th April 2018, 08:04 AM

Max has had an iffy start to the season but he's clearly a huge talent.

Can't see him ever winning again in F1. Ferraris puppet. Vettel and both Mercs would all have to have retired & even then he'd probably be passed by an RBR.

Posted by: Midge 18th April 2018, 08:55 AM

I'd have liked to have seen Max 2nd in a Red Bull 1-2... but that'd have meant Vettel not spinning and moving down as far as 8th... I'd like to see a Kimi win again as much as I don't like him in the Ferrari; he's such a legend. Loved Alonso's move on Vettel as well - BOTH showed skill in that one really, Vettel to avoid a collision whilst still fighting for it.

Posted by: Mack. 21st April 2018, 10:43 PM

There is plans to change how much full each car can carry, with the amount being increased in 2019 by 5kg to 110 in the bid to try and stop cars fuel saving during a race, allowing drivers to press more.

Also next year the driver's weight will be counted separately to that of the car and plans that drivers should weigh a minimum weight (expected t be 80kg) Any driver under that weight will have to carry ballast.

In addition, drivers will be using biometric gloves to give medical teams info on a drivers condition after a crash.

Posted by: Mack. 28th April 2018, 01:21 PM

What is Hartley doing slowing down in the middle of the track could have been a nasty incident with Gasly in qualifying.

Posted by: Dobbo 28th April 2018, 01:25 PM

I've never thought of Hartley as anything but a completely incompetent driver. Kyvat was a million times better than he is which says it all...

Posted by: Mack. 28th April 2018, 03:33 PM

Another pole for Vettel then with Hamilton second.

Posted by: Mack. 28th April 2018, 03:38 PM

Hartley slowing down in the middle of the track was dangerous. Will he get reprimanded?

Posted by: Dobbo 28th April 2018, 03:40 PM

Should have been Kimi's pole today but as usual he bottled it. Wouldn't have made a jot of difference as he'd be given the worse strategy anyway...

Let's hope we get a race even half as interesting as last year's!

Posted by: Mack. 28th April 2018, 04:55 PM

Timing tower still a shambles with the "no time" error still present.

Posted by: Midge 28th April 2018, 10:32 PM

I'm looking forward to another exciting race tomorrow. It surely will be; there's something about this track. I'd love to see another Red Bull victory or even something more strange. Lance Stroll wasn't too far off last year for instance!! Surely at least one safety car to come. Maybe Max can take out the top lot for us. Who knows laugh.gif

I am getting a bit concerned that Ferrari are literally going to storm it though without things like safety cars coming into play. Vettel on pole thrice in a row now...

Posted by: Dobbo 29th April 2018, 02:02 PM

Bloody hell WHAT a race! Absolutely loving this track, drama all the way through. Who'd have called that top 3?

LOL at the Red Bulls, another Max howler moving twice in the breaking zone. Grosjean also rolling back the years with his gaffe rotf.gif

A bit gutted for Bottas there as he had a great strategy but great to see Lewis with his first win of the year cheer.gif

What an outstanding drive from Leclerc too. I'm sure at the start of the season I was touting Sirotkin for rookie of the year but he's been anonymous in contrast.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 29th April 2018, 02:26 PM

Major ew at the cuntrag winning. Was praying for a year without that team getting on the top step coz lord knows we need the f***ing variation.

Sainz getting 5th was so pleasing. Heartbroken for Hulk, perfect chance for him today to snag that maiden podium

Posted by: Mack. 29th April 2018, 02:55 PM

Perez has been summoned to the stewards about alleged illegal DRS use apparently. Don't take the podium from him.

Posted by: Midge 29th April 2018, 04:33 PM

Another great race! Summed up well already by Dobbo. I'll post up the B-League results once it's all confirmed whether Perez and Stroll got penalties.

What a race that was, a crazy start and a crazy final 11 laps. Baku has to stay as a track.

Bar the first lap pile-up (surely Grosjean's days are becoming increasingly numbered) this race was a relative snoozefest compared the 3 before.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 13th May 2018, 11:58 PM

Only a 3 place grid penalty for Grosjean :/

Should be a one race ban. 0 cars would have retired had he not planted his foot on the floor. His 'excuse' to the stewards was pathetic.

Posted by: Mack. 17th May 2018, 10:43 AM

Shame to see how Williams have fallen again.

Posted by: Mack. 26th May 2018, 09:33 PM

Story of Verstappen's season:

QUOTE
First, he over-drove in the first race of the season in Australia, ran wide and damaged his car and then spun, and finished sixth
In Bahrain, he crashed in qualifying and then retired from the race after colliding with Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes
In China, he lost a likely win by running wide trying to pass Hamilton and then colliding with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel
In Azerbaijan, he crashed in practice and then retired after being hit by team-mate Daniel Ricciardo. Both drivers were considered to blame for the incident but Verstappen's decision to make an illegal second move in defence was a contributing factor
In Spain, he damaged his front wing lapping Lance Stroll's Williams after a safety car period but managed to continue to finish third

And then he crashes near the exact same spot he crashed two years ago.

I really felt for Leclerc, bless him. Although he did good taking Hartley with him. Torro Roso can get in the sea.

Thrilled to bits for Dani Ric. He really deserved that, he's dominated the whole weekend and it was the perfect redemption for 2016.

Alonso has described yesterday's race as -

"Extremely boring. I mean, this is probably the most boring race ever.

"Without a safety car, without yellow flags, the sport needs to think a little bit about the show because this is very disappointing.

"Probably the most boring race ever in Formula 1.

"We probably need to give something to the fans at the end of the race just to pay the ticket back a little."

Is he right or being a bit harsh?

I'm sure there must have been one but I've been watching since the late 70s and really can't remember one that dull

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 28th May 2018, 11:25 AM

Monaco has been dull for years. The only exciting thing that ever happens at Monaco is when someone f***s their braking point for the chicane coming out the tunnel and wipes out the car they've been stuck behind for the past 65 laps.

Posted by: Severin 28th May 2018, 11:43 AM

Agreed, it's been dull for a while but used to throw up some real classics - '92, '82, '84, '96 all stick well in the mind and Senna's race in 1988 is one of the most amazing drives I've ever seen.

But back to the point. It's still not usually this dull

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 28th May 2018, 02:54 PM

Arguably we’ve got to the point where the aero crew are king and it really should be mechanical grip that rules.

I love seeing innovation but I think the previous aero restrictions have back fired because they’ve pushed all developments into areas of the car that make it impossible to follow another car.

I’d love to see a team scratch their current aero plans and go for a clean sheet 2019 design that’s built to follow another car closely. That way we might see a midfield team pulling off amazing overtakes and everyone scrambling to copy them. It’s a pipe dream but we all know how much the merc suffers in traffic. It’s not a follower at all!!

Posted by: Mack. 28th May 2018, 04:05 PM

2002 Hungarian Grand Prix that was the worst until today. What do you do with Monaco? I don't think that it is harsh.

2008, 2016 when it was wet was exciting to some extent.

Posted by: Dobbo 29th May 2018, 12:06 PM

I think there's been a slight overexaggeration to this, yes it was dull but hasn't that been the case for a good few years now? Monaco is only ever really exciting when its a wet race and those are few & far between.

The blame should lie on the bright spark who thought hyper soft tyres were a good idea. What is the bloody point of designing a faster, gripper compound if drivers have to nurse their car practically the entire race distance anyway? Stupid, should have set the available compounds as medium to super soft (or at least soft to ultra soft).

Perhaps in Canada, Verstappen will hit the "Wall of Champions" with how his season has gone so far.

Posted by: Severin 10th June 2018, 09:30 PM

Yeah that was pretty dull. The highlight was Jacques taking his father's old car out for a spin. A lovely reminder of one of the sport's greatest ever talents.
Although it was a little awkward when Damon Hill and Nico Rosberg were discussing father son title winners and they had to dance around how Keke came to win after Gilles was killed and Pironi crippled.

Posted by: Mack. 10th June 2018, 09:47 PM

Hopefully this is worth staying up for if not it will help me sleep.

Posted by: Dobbo 10th June 2018, 10:10 PM

It's such a shame. After the thrillers of China & Azerbaijan I thought we were on for a classic season but all the problems with the Sport have reared their ugly heads in these past 2 races. I suppose at least the title race is unpredictable at present but whoever gets pole each race is pretty much nailed on for the win. Get rid of these hideous hypersofts that force the drivers to nurse their car the entire GP, this is not motor sport in my book.

The ending was hilarious though, 2 laps missed out due to an early chequered flag. Nothing of real note (luckily) but means Danny Ric lost his fastest lap!

Red Bull will be switching to Honda engines next year.

Thus proving Alonso was talking BS about having "the best chassis on the grid" & the Honda engine was the problem.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 21st June 2018, 10:13 PM

We’ve seen their Chassis is shit but I’m not sure that’s proven the Honda engine is any good. After all they spend 2015 and 2017 blowing up at a rate of about 1.7 engines per race.

Good riddance to RBR, I look forward to the curse of the odd years smacking them very firmly in the face next year

Posted by: Severin 22nd June 2018, 06:21 AM

Paul Ricard used to be great but since they've neutered the circuit who knows how it'll be. France deserves a race though and Magny-Cours was never anything but terrible.

It looks like someone saw a massive car park and thought, what happens if I let an 8 year old loose with a spray can to design a racing track, the decided to put the barriers around the 4 edges of the track while the kid was painting just in case they went a little wild and changed their mind about the layout so then they wouldn’t need to do the barriers again

We need to bring back gravel. I don’t mind a large concrete run off area but directly adjacent to the circuit needs to be like 5m of gravel. Mistakes aren’t punished and we don’t see people f***ing up and getting beached in the gravel any more and that’s a detriment to F1. At least Australia, Monaco, Baku and Canada punish f*** ups with their close walls

Posted by: Dobbo 23rd June 2018, 02:38 PM

Oh wow it really just gets worse & worse for McLaren doesn't it. What an absolute pig of a car, no excuses now with the Renault engine. Boullier needs to go, absolutely clueless.

Posted by: Dobbo 23rd June 2018, 04:24 PM

Wow wow wow Charles Leclerc, this guy is the next Alonso for sure. That Sauber has absolutely no right whatsoever to be in the top 8 on the grid, this kid is a special talent!

Posted by: Mack. 23rd June 2018, 05:51 PM

Rumours that Leclerc could be joining Ferrari next season. Bloody hell pushing that Sauber into the Top8 of the grid that's impressive.

Posted by: Severin 24th June 2018, 04:40 PM

At least the football was exciting. Maybe they should make each Grand Prix a series of 20 separate 2 lap races with an aggregate score as that's the only exciting part! Mind you there be no cars left pretty quickly.

Seriously though much better than Canada and it's nice to welcome France back but I'm expecting Road America to provide today's racing excitement

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 25th June 2018, 03:28 AM

I didn’t stay up for the race, didn’t want to watch Hamilton win on my birthday. Sounds like I missed a fun opening lap and a Renault briefly running in P3! I’m sure it got pretty dull thereafter.

Posted by: Mack. 26th June 2018, 12:07 PM

Horrible looking track with all those blue and white lines, Vettel was very lucky to only get a 5 second penalty he could serve as part of a pit stop. It all went a bit boring after the first lap accidents.

Posted by: Mack. 30th June 2018, 06:53 PM

3 place grid penalty for Vettel for impeding Sainz Jr during qualifying. Starts sixth instead of third.

Literally unheard of for a double Mercedes retirement both through car issues! Just goes to show this season is at least keeping things interesting in a race to race perspective if the races themselves haven't all been that special.

But today's was a good one! The initial Merc strategy f*** up opened things right up & I'm happy for Max to have a good run of results under his belt this season, caught right up to Ric in the standings! Plus I had money on him winning today at long odds cheer.gif

What a cracking race! Can always rely on Silverstone to serve up the goods.

Not the win but what a superb fightback from Lewis (btw, why did Kimi get a 10s penalty today but Vettel only a 5s for a MUCH more blatant error in France - inconsistent much?) couldn't quite bring it home but I was loving those last 10 or so laps with the Mercs & Ferraris in such close tandem!

Posted by: Severin 8th July 2018, 03:19 PM

Yep. British Grand Prix delivers yet again. Good question on the length of penalty for Kimi. Felt harsh compared to previous ones for similar incidents.

Sadly, Hamilton continues to behave like a ungracious spoilt child and his behaviour at parc ferme was rude and disrespectful to the public. I don't care how much it hurts, suck it up and speak to the fans.

Posted by: Mack. 8th July 2018, 04:08 PM

Not a fan of Hamilton's comments. Hopefully it's just a heat of the moment thing and he walks it back at the next race cos there is no way that was deliberate from Kimi.

Stoffel Vandoorne-

Dead last in qualifying (Alonso 11th) and dead last in the race (even slower than the Williams!) before the end race madness. Okay, he didn't finish last and actually finished the race despite having problems at one point but at no point was he competitive, challenging for points or even close to Fernando's speed.

Alonso and the team seem to be taking sympathy. Apparently Stoffel’s car (for some unknown reason) is showing up with less downforce. I don’t know if that’s down to the way he’s driving the car, or a technical issue (surely if it was, they could just replicate Alonso’s aerodynamic setup, and see what he gets out of it, no?). I’d be worried if I was Stof, there are other similarly experienced drivers outshining him (Ocon & Leclerc mainly).

2019 Grid Predictions:

Ferrari: Sebastian Vettel & Kimi Raikkonen
Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton & Valtteri Bottas
Red Bull: Daniel Ricciardo & Max Verstappen
Renault: Nico Hulkenberg & Esteban Ocon
Haas: Kevin Magnussen & Charles Leclerc
Force India: Sergio Perez & Lance Stroll
McLaren: Fernando Alonso & Carlos Sainz
Toro Rosso: Pierre Gasly & Brendon Hartley
Sauber: Antonio Giovinazzi & Marcus Ericsson
Williams: Pascal Wehrlein & George Russell

Posted by: Dobbo 26th July 2018, 11:28 AM

Would be great to see Wehrlein back! Have absolutely no idea why Ericsson was favoured over him.

Would be a shame for Grosjean to be dumped, having a weak season but he's better than a third of those drivers above, even if he had to downgrade teams once again.

Not all that thrilled on the prospect of Giovinazzi back on the grid...

Posted by: Juranamo 26th July 2018, 12:23 PM

Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton & Valtteri Bottas
Ferrari: Sebastian Vettel & Kimi Räikkönen
Red Bull: Daniel Ricciardo & Max Verstappen
Renault: Nico Hülkenberg & Jack Aitken
Force India: Sergio Pérez & Esteban Ocon
Haas: Kevin Magnussen & Antonio Giovinazzi
McLaren: Stoffel Vandoorne & Lando Norris
Toro Rosso: Carlos Sainz & Pierre Gasly
Sauber: Charles Leclerc & Marcus Ericsson
Williams: Sergey Sirotkin & George Russell

Wehrlein will not be seen in F1 again, I’m sure of it. He barely did better than Ericsson in that Sauber.
Ericsson is only still in F1 because, well... money talks.

It makes sense for Ferrari to try to get Leclerc into a slightly faster car, but I reckon they’ll decide on leaving him in the Sauber for stability.

Stroll’s backers won’t be able to get him a seat with Force India as Mercedes are still giving such a benefit for Ocon’s seat and Pérez won’t be moving anywhere. Stroll doesn’t want to continue with Williams so that frees up a spot for Mercedes to plonk Russell in.

I can see Alonso moving into a different McLaren operation (I know he is contracted to race for McLaren, but not explicitly F1, think he might move to IndyCar in search of his triple), making room for Norris.

Sainz will head back to Toro Rosso after his loan finishes, with the view to moving him to Red Bull in 2020. The final spot at Renault will go to one of their development drivers (presumably Jack Aitken).

Bye bye Stroll, Grosjean and Hartley 👋

Brazil '09 was my personal favourite but this was super exciting too - hopefully the race carries the same excitement. Even if it's dry having the much faster Ferraris behind the Mercs makes things interesting.

Danny Ric can't catch a break right now!

Posted by: Mack. 30th July 2018, 12:53 PM

From a neutral perspective, shame Ferrari screwed up the pitstop. Could have had a good scrap at the end between Hamilton & Vettel.

Posted by: Mack. 2nd August 2018, 06:57 PM

I don't think you can put all the blame on Bottas from his clashes with Vettel and Ricciardo in the final laps in Hungary. Mercedes should share some of the blame as well. With Kimi having a slow pit stop and being behind the Haas car, they could have left Bottas out for a few more laps and, by shortening the length of that stint on the softs, given him a better chance of holding off Vettel and Kimi.

Leclerc- He had a quieter race than usual.

For Sky viewers- What is Martin Brundle like now as a commentator?

Was about to post - I’m completely shocked given the Mercedes and Ferrari seats are filled but Renault are that wildcard who could build back to glory days so it’s an interesting gamble!

What will this mean for the drivers market? Sainz has been rumoured for McLaren recently but you’d think this is his seat to fill at Red Bull. Gasly has impressed on occasions but surely it’s too soon for him? Hulkenberg deserves a chance in a top 3 team but he’s in the Renault who could join those ranks soon. Alonso surely won’t be Red Bull bound with Sainz going to McLaren?

Edit: wait, the second Ferrari seat isn’t filled is it - that’s certainly an option! Though Renault is strongly rumoured. But given all the Renault related Red Bull breakdowns it is a little surprising in that respect if true.

Posted by: Mack. 3rd August 2018, 11:31 AM

I think I would say Gasly it is a season too early for him to join Red Bull. Sainz to go to Red Bull, I would think. I'm shocked about this too.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 3rd August 2018, 11:43 AM

Who do I need to ritually sacrifice to the F1 gods for this to happen????????

I would kill to have a Hülkcciardo pairing at Renault. I think Dani can smell the winds at RBR and knows that if they were fighting for a WDC then Max would be supported by the team more. It’s telling that Dani has mostly maintained a dignified silence in respect to the engine issues he’s had this year compared to Max. As an aside the incidents happen at a remarkably lower rate to both the Factory and McLaren so either Red Bull aren’t operating it in the correct conditions, or Renault have been so determined to get them to f*** off to Honda that they deliberately gave them dodgy bits. We do have form when it comes to unsportsmanlike conduct and RBR deserve it tbh.

I am fiercely against Ocon. I’m not a fan of either Force India driver or the team in general tbh. So as long as he’s not income I’m happy. Sainz and Hülk are a strong pairing so if we can secure Sainz longer term I’d be thrilled.

Posted by: Dobbo 3rd August 2018, 11:54 AM

That's a bold move for Danny, the big 3 have such a pace advantage over the rest of the field it's actually inconceivable that any other team could even think about race victories in the near future.

Mind you i said that about Merc back in 2012 & Lewis hasn't done too badly there. We need either Renault or McLaren back up at the business end anyway!

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 3rd August 2018, 12:01 PM

I’m shook. Literally yesterday ESPN reported Dani Ric saying his contract would be signed by Belgium, guess he meant Renault and they assumed RBR!

What a coup this would be.

I know there’s a Ferrari seat available but given Vettel fled their because he couldn’t cope with Dani Ric beating him in 2014 I’d imagine that Kimi or Leclerc will take that seat even with Dani Ric availabile.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 3rd August 2018, 12:20 PM

f*** me it’s confirmed!!! Hülkcciardo is a go go go

Posted by: Hans 3rd August 2018, 01:26 PM

When you say "we", do you work for Renault or something?

What is it about Ocon you don't like? He seems so lovely ohmy.gif

I'm stoked about this bit of F1 news anyhow, it really spices things up. It's as much as a gamble for Danny Ric as it was Red Bull jumping ship for Honda.

Allegedly, Red Bull have been having more issues with the engine as they've been avoiding upgrades or possibly have a refined version of the engine because the one on offer compromised their aerodynamics?

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 3rd August 2018, 02:06 PM

I wish I worked for them. No, we as in how any fan talks about a team that they support and are loyal too. It’s quite a common phrase.

I don’t rate either FI driver, I find them petulant and stroppy and arrogant. Neither have the skills to back their ego.

You look at the aero and cooling on that RBR and compare it to Renault and McLaren (who had packaging and cooling issues in testing) and it’s a reasonable conclusion to make. There’s some reason why they have a higher failure rate and I think claims of “overdriving” are less about factual reality and more of a hatred of Max

Esteban has always come across as such a lovely guy in any interview I've seen; granted immature reacting to situations with Sergio last year. Sergio I've increasingly found to come across quite arrogant - though I've seen good-hearted comments and actions from him too to be fair.

Surely though, they've been driving the socks off of that Force India? Do you think Hamilton or Vettel or Alonso could've gotten that car onto the podium regularly or even once last year? I think Pérez has improved somewhat since his chance at McLaren... I think Ocon could be a future world champion. Just the impression I get anyway.

I ignore the Max hate - he's just a little immature and the mistakes will get less with each year that goes by. When he's on form, he's incredible. I'd take Danny Ric over him as things stand, but I definitely believe the hype.

I'll miss his team radios more than anything!

Right decision, he was never getting back into a top team & as much as it would have been good to see him in competitive McLaren it wasn't meant to be - I bet they'll be super competitive next season now tho!

His team radio messages should be released like en masse in a special DVD to make his retirement along with just every race from 05/06 and the ability to watch the 130R overtake on repeat

Can't believe it is 20 years since that incident-packed Belgian Grand Prix. One of the most incredible races I've ever seen.

I was fortunate to be at that race. So many wonderful little memories from that weekend. Although the crash was incredible, when 7 cars plodded past us at Pouhon there was an palpable feeling of 'well this is gonna suck now' from the entire hillside. Fortunately most were able to make the restart and it turned into an utterly brilliant couple of hours.
Watching the Germans all make to leave when Schumacher crashed with Coulthard only to turn around and come back when they thought Ralf had a chance was hilarious. And the British contingent immediately starting up the playground chant of 'fight! Fight! Fight!' when Schumacher stormed into his garage to confront him was hilarious.
Great race

Posted by: Severin 16th August 2018, 11:57 AM

I would say I'm gonna miss Alonso but as it seems likely he'll be in Indycar next year I really won't but it's a sad day for F1 when its best driver leaves because he can't get a decent seat. I know part of that is Alonso fault as well but the tragedy is we end up with him being regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the sports history and equally probably its greatest ever underachiever as well (sorry Stirling).

And what we're left with is a grid with a bunch or mostly average journeymen drivers being dominated by 2 very good drivers that somehow managed to gain 8 championships between them simple because of all conquering cars and a lack of genuine competition. Whenever either have a genuine challenger things start to go pair shaped for them
Thankfully we still have Ricciardo and Verstappen to keeps things interesting and Leclerc to offer hope for the future.

But if Alonso is going to Indycar I strongly recommend you watch because it's yet another reason to watch a truly competitve and exciting series

Posted by: Mack. 16th August 2018, 11:57 AM

That's fantastic. Not sure there hasn't been a Grand Prix like that since then. It's one of the best races I've seen.

Interestingly despite being a new constructor, the new Force India is considered the same constructor as the old Force India for engine penalties!! They’ve the worst of all worlds

I didn’t watch the qualifying, so didn’t see this footage (if it was broadcast). But Ocon has pretty much confirmed that both Racing Point seats have been filled next year, by Stroll and Pérez, no surprises there. laugh.gif

I think for Ocon, where would go now? Williams maybe, that would a back step for him, McLaren? Doesn't seem right that he could be without a drive for next year after his best qualifying.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 25th August 2018, 08:36 PM

Ocon is a Merc driver so a move to Williams might make sense.

I watched Q1 the jumped ship when it was clear we weren’t taking any further part

Glad that the halo managed to protect Leclerc's head after that crash which was too similar to 2012 with Alonso at the first corner.

Apart from that, it wasn't the best race to watch.

It’s that twitter meme where whenever there’s a crash everyone “blames” Ericsson.

Renault today are out for blood. They’ve protested the Haas over an Illegal floor and now have just come for Red Bull on twitter saying that Dani Ric was a DNF because of a clutch failure, and his Renault PU was perfectly fine

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 2nd September 2018, 08:20 PM

Haas knowingly raced an illegal floor in contrary to Technical Directives and thusly Renault’s complaint has upheld and Romain Grosjean has been disqualified from the Italian Grand Prix. (Provisionally of course Haas can still mount a pointless appeal)

The FIA warned them if they raced this illegal floor they’d be open to this so I can’t imagine the appeal will succeed

Definitely one of the most thrilling & exciting Italian GPs I can ever remember (they're usually drab affairs aren't they?) Looks like that last hurrah victory for Kimi is not going to happen.

Anyways, absolutely buzzing for the next GP as I will in fact be there in attendance!

Posted by: Juranamo 3rd September 2018, 12:08 PM

Absolutely disgusted at 1) the stewards decision and 2) the C4 arselicking commentary over the Hamilton / Vettel incident. I’m hardly Vettel’s biggest fan (and it even gave Kimi his best shot at the win as Ferrari clearly would have played swapsies biggrin.gif), but to me Hamilton did not leave Vettel anywhere near enough room in his extremely heavy car. I feel like Hamilton deserved a penalty at least as I felt that was pretty dangerous and sure others have been penalised for similar...

Posted by: Dobbo 3rd September 2018, 12:29 PM

Really? Hamilton went round the outside cleanly and vettel understeered into him - even his biggest enemy Rosberg said it was 100% vettels fault! To be honest I don't think either were to blame was just one of those incidents, certainly not as blatant as verstappens swivel into bottas for example.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 3rd September 2018, 01:23 PM

I f***ing hate Hamilton and am literally counting down the days until he finally retires so he can f*** off and look like a blind person dressed him on a red carpet, but I’m not so sure that he was to fault here

Posted by: Severin 3rd September 2018, 03:35 PM

Not Hamilton's fault at all. Vettel had understeer through the corner causing the contact. Racing incident

Actually a really good race throughout despite a disappointing end result. Both major races yesterday were genuinely exciting all the way through.

He has been driving the wheels of that sauber tbf, getting into q3 in a weak car on so many occasions is very impressive, he's had some rotten luck in the last few races too unfortunately. But I am surprised still after only one season by Ferraris move.

I have a great spot on the bay grandstand. Hyped for the race but what worries me is the dreaded return of the hypersofts - the only 2 races they've been used this season (Monaco & Canada) were 2 of the worst Grands Prix in the history of the Sport but I'm holding out hope Singapore can turn that around somewhat.

Checo’s Horrific driving the only thing keeping that race from being a total snooze fest.

Only a drive through penalty for that move on Sirotkin was an utter joke. Bitch should have been black flagged and banned from the next race. That was a deliberate accident at full racing speed

Posted by: Mack. 27th September 2018, 10:10 AM

Things to look out for in Russia:
- Daniil Kvyat is expected to formalise his return to Toro Rosso next season.
- Rumours abound that Marcus Ericsson might be cut loose from Sauber, as Giovinazzi takes his place for FP1.
- Norris is also doing FP1, along with Artem Markelov and Nicholas Latifi.

Who’d have thought Kvyat would be back!!! He owes a lot to Sainz and Dani Ric leaving as well as the junior programme looking sparse.

I don’t buy the second one though as Ericsson is remaining the third driver and general marketing slave for next year. I think his people have a stake in the team so can see him getting Kimi’s seat if he retires midway through the deal (as many expect)

Posted by: Dobbo 29th September 2018, 09:57 AM

It's surprising but he's really not as bad as everyone makes out, remember he actually beat Ricciardo in his first year at Red Bull. He had a rough time after being dropped back to Toro Rosso with far too many mistakes but he's definitely got some raw speed. Besides, there's really not a lot of choice otherwise is there? (Shockingly) Even the terrible Hartley may end up retaining his seat.

Kyviat is not that bad but he did cause some accident or something, right?

Posted by: Dobbo 30th September 2018, 03:56 PM

I'm not saying Kyvat is better than Ocon at all but Toro Rosso are only ever gonna pick drivers with Red Bull ties or from their driver programme. In the long run I don't think this is too bad news for Ocon though as I believe he'll be Merc reserve next season with a view to a potential permanent seat perhaps the year after in place of Bottas.

As for today it is a bit of a shame Bottas wasn't allowed that win at a track he's clearly very strong at but I never understand the level of vitriol. This sort of stuff has happened for EVER in the Sport, it's especially rich coming from Ferrari fans.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 30th September 2018, 04:32 PM

I can’t stand team orders. I think if you’re not good enough to overtake then on your head be it. This is supposed to be about talent at the end of the day and if you’ve not enough talent to get past your team mate then you should sit there.

I’d make it illegal again personally.

Brb finding some incriminating photos of Haas to have them disqualified again

Posted by: Mack. 30th September 2018, 07:43 PM

Shame to see team orders decide the win, bit of a dull race to be honest.

Posted by: Severin 1st October 2018, 04:29 PM

Yesterday was one of the few occasions where Hamilton came across quite well post race. I thought he looked genuinely conflicted and uncomfortable at being gifted the win like that.
One can only hope that later in the season, with the title sown up, he has a chance to emulate Senna giving payback to Gerhard Berger at Suzuka '91 and moves over for Bottas at some point.
Team orders always leave a bitter taste but banning them is really difficult to enforce, and it's not always a case of not being good enough to make the move. Hamilton is clearly a far better driver than Bottas but with F1 set up in such a way that cars lose so much downforce as to make overtaking such a rare event, that becomes the real problem.

Once in a while F1 delivers a result that puts a smile on everyone's face - even Kimi Raikkonen's - today was one of those days

Posted by: Dob Geldof 21st October 2018, 08:31 PM

Cracking race, super happy that Kimi did manage to get that win (at last!) before his departure. Makes a chance for Ferrari to out-strategy Merc!

Posted by: HannibalLetcher 21st October 2018, 09:56 PM

Absolute rotten luck, Ricciardo has had recently. He apparently punched a wall after his retirement.

Both Magnussen and Ocon facing the stewards over fuel issues.

Posted by: Severin 21st October 2018, 10:32 PM

During the race there was a moment that inspired much discussion in my house. Alonso basically suggested there was a lack of quality in the field. Personally I agree, and I challenged my mates to name one truly great passing move by anyone not driving a Merc, Ferrari or Red Bull, or with the name Fernando. At any race ever... in F1. We drew a blank.

We all remembered great ones from years back - not just the champions but less celebrated people like Berger, Frentzen, Alesi, Patrese, Montoya, Irvine, Barrichello, Herbert, Webber et al but nothng from the current field. There was a niggling thought that Sainz might have done something but no actual recollection.

Is Fernando right? Did my mates and I have poor memories? I'm sure we did but any ideas?

Posted by: Bjork 22nd October 2018, 10:34 AM

Alonso wasn't talking in general about everybody but mostly about the same ones that are always involved in accidents, week in week out,
Stroll had already crushed into Alonso a while ago, and he did apologise to Alonso, but thats not the solution, learn to drive man
I agree with Alonso 1000%, this is F1, it's not a cart rise for kids age 16, Stroll, Magnussen, Grosjean, Hartley, even Hulkenberg, they are not professional enough, they're a danger to the others, to the real professionals, they shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a F1 car, especially Stroll and Magnussen

Posted by: HannibalLetcher 22nd October 2018, 10:35 AM

Can't think of any on the top of my head either of a great passing move outside Alonso and the three teams.

Posted by: HannibalLetcher 22nd October 2018, 10:42 AM

We could potentially see a new first time winner next season. Leclerc or even Gasly.

Posted by: Dob Geldof 22nd October 2018, 11:28 AM

Leclerc has pulled off some outstanding moves this season, most recently against Magnussen in Sochi so I can't agree with you there.

Hulk & Perez have had flashes of brilliance in their careers but admittedly not had great seasons this year. So you do have a point in the sense that I couldn't make a case for many of the current crop warranting a seat in a top team.

Posted by: Severin 22nd October 2018, 03:56 PM

Yeah I agree, looking back, that Leclerc has done some great moves and Bianchi was full of promise. I knew we'd have missed something.
Having said that I think he's an anomaly and that the field in general is fairly poor.
The top six drivers - Hamilton, Vettel, Alonso, Raikkonen, Verstappen and Ricciardo are among the best in the world.

The next bunch - Bottas, Hulkenberg, Sainz, Ocon and Perez are all good and like someone said momentarily great, and therefore deserves drives in F1.

I'd also place Leclerc in this group as it's really too soon to see if he'll maintain this level. I remember great drivers like Martin Brundle, who wasn't far behind Senna in the lower formula and impressed greatly until an accident messed up his ankles and robbed him of a glittering career, or Karl Wendlinger whose huge crash at Monaco put him in a coma for a month and broke his career. Frentzen, Johansson, Irvine and others all started brightly and never kept it up.

As for the rest of the pack I personally wouldn't care if none of them ever raced F1 again

Posted by: HannibalLetcher 22nd October 2018, 04:01 PM

Montoya on his day was.good in his Williams days, that pass on Schumacher in Brazil 2001.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 23rd October 2018, 09:34 AM

Nice of Williams to release him to allow that to happen. Red Bull refuse to release Dani Ric and also refuse to let him drive the RBR

Posted by: HannibalLetcher 23rd October 2018, 01:05 PM

If things don't work out with Ocon for Williams, surely Williams must go for Kubica now. Sirotkin's money is no excuse anymore, because apparently Kubica now brings the same amount of backing as Sirotkin.

Posted by: HannibalLetcher 25th October 2018, 04:07 PM

Will we see Hamilton claim his fifth title? Or will there be a miracle for Vettel to keep it alive for yet another round?

Posted by: Dob Geldof 28th October 2018, 09:21 PM

YES winner.gif

Awful luck continued for Ricciardo, the engine yet again.

Nope. Yet again it’s got f*** all to do with Renault! Red Bull confirmed it was a clutch failure (Red Bull use their own gearbox) and Horner and Marko actually praised Renault. Well Marko was more implied which is his version of praise for Renault. Horner was right tho, the altitude reduced the advantage that Merc and Ferrari had. You could see the sheer drivability Dan Ric was getting out of the corners it was like the Renault V8 was back. Whatever Renault have done to this years engine they are clearly the best at high altitude running. The rest of the midfield pack were sitting ducks compared to the factory car. While watching the leaders do f*** all for 3 laps we missed Sainz and Hulk overtake 5 cars in about 3 laps

Posted by: HannibalLetcher 29th October 2018, 07:26 PM

My mistake sorry.

Well done to Hulkenberg on winning the B race Mexican Grand Prix.

Unfortunately yes the winner was a footnote on Hamilton winning his world title matching Fangio on five.

Posted by: Severin 29th October 2018, 09:03 PM

Gotta admit Hamilton deserves it this year and there have even been moments where he seemed quite likeable.

If he drives as well next year as he has done this year I'll probably rate him in the 10 best drivers of all time

Swiss driver Louis Deletraz will have his first F1 test for Haas at the post-season Pirelli sessions in Abu Dhabi, surely he's better this Dad who raced in three Grand Prix in 1994 and 1995.

Posted by: Mack. 2nd November 2018, 12:56 PM

Ten years to the day since ITV last showed a Grand Prix where Lewis Hamilton won the world title for the first time. A peak of 13m viewers in the UK watched the race.

Ten years on, how things have changed with Sky Sports having exclusive F1 rights from season, Sky and F1 can only dream of those viewing figures now.

Posted by: Dob Geldof 2nd November 2018, 01:00 PM

Agreed, although tbf that was his first title ending a 12 year drought for a British champion and the race was at a prime time tv slot for the audience so a combination of all those things played some part.

Admittedly sky sports is an expensive luxury but can't deny they go a fantastic job with their coverage and dedicated channel. Get what you pay for that's for sure!

Posted by: Mack. 2nd November 2018, 01:28 PM

True, I haven't seen Sky Sports coverage, but it is good to see a dedicated F1 channel which is something that I thought I'll never see.

Away from that-

Haas have had their appeal against Romain Grosjean's disqualification of 6th place in the Italian Grand Prix thrown out.

Also it has agreed apparently that Vietnam will host a Grand Prix in 2020.

Posted by: Dob Geldof 11th November 2018, 09:01 PM

It's not often you see a driver confront another in the manner Max did to Ocon! Straight from the football pitch that.

No idea what the hell Ocon was doing there - Max 100% deserved the win today.

Posted by: Mack. 12th November 2018, 12:24 AM

No certainly not, a stupid move from Ocon.

Posted by: Mack. 12th November 2018, 01:18 AM

Ocon was in the wrong on-track, I can understand Max's disappointment but I don't think pushing Ocon was wise, I think that the first physical altercation that we've seen since Piquet vs Salazar in 1982 of course you had Senna punch Irvine in Japan 1993 when Irvine unlapped himself, Schumacher v Coulthard Spa 1998, Hamilton v Massa 2011 although that was.more collisions, Trulli v Sutil Brazil 2009, those are feuds in F1 that have confrontational that I can think of.

Brazil 2001- Montoya gets taken out of the race when in the lead by an Arrows
Brazil 2018- Max loses the win after Ocon collides with him when trying to unlap himself.

Coincidence?

I've read that there are theories that Ocon was told by Mercedes to take out Max like rife on social media.

This from Helment Marko:

QUOTE
A Mercedes driver, who is promised a seat for 2020, that crashes into the leading car -- unbelievable," Marko told Germany's Motorsport-Magazin. "They should have told him 'this is the leader, he has new tyres, don't attack him.'

"And then this idiot gets a ten-second penalty. I would have expected a race ban."

What are your views on this?

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 12th November 2018, 06:19 PM

I cannot believe I am about to say this. Dear god.......but I think Hamilton was right. Max had more to lose and should have just let Ocon pass. Max shut the door on him very firmly knowing that he was there and I think that he unnecessarily fought for it instead of having the wisdom to just let him go through and not f*** up your race.

Don't think Ocon should be banned, he was a passenger the moment Max shut the door on him

Posted by: Mack. 14th November 2018, 01:38 PM

The FIA will not seek further talks with Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon over their post-Brazilian Grand Prix physical confrontation following Verstappen's punishment.

Posted by: Bjork 15th November 2018, 10:35 AM

Ocon should have gotten a 1-race ban minimum

he was 1 lap behind and crashed into the leading car, there was a blue flag, the leading car shouldn't have to bother about cars that are 1 lap behind

lost all respect for ocon

Posted by: Juranamo 15th November 2018, 05:51 PM

I’m not a fan of blue flag rules, it would make racing much more interesting if the leaders actually had to overtake / occasionally defend from backmarkers on merit. Who cares if “the leaders are having their own race”? Backmarkers should be an obstacle just as much as hairpins / chicanes / animals crossing the road!

I’m not saying Ocon was in the right, I feel that was a risky move based on current rules. tongue.gif

Posted by: Mack. 15th November 2018, 11:34 PM

Vettel will he ever win a world title in a Ferrari? Or set not to be like Alonso's stint at Ferrari hence without the mistakes Vettel has made.

Posted by: Mack. 17th November 2018, 11:35 PM

Liberty expects to "replace a few existing" Grand Prix venues in future – what do you think of that?

Posted by: Mack. 20th November 2018, 02:55 PM

Regarding Max he is extremely talented, but his confrontation with Ocon has made me think twice as to whether I can still warm to him. Let's see what happens next year.

Posted by: Mack. 21st November 2018, 10:38 AM

An announcement that could happen in Abu Dhabi, would be that Robert Kubica is set to make a remarkable comeback by agreeing a deal to join Williams for next year.

Posted by: dobbo 21st November 2018, 11:35 AM

Fantastic news if so, one of the most naturally talented drivers since I've followed the sport. Gave Hamilton, Alonso et al a run for their money on plenty of occasions whist at Sauber.

Posted by: Mack. 21st November 2018, 11:44 PM

As we approach the final race of his second stint at Ferrari, Kimi Raikkonen is currently Ferrari's most recent world champion, race winner, pole position and podium sitter, a little stat for you.

Posted by: jakewild 22nd November 2018, 09:19 AM

welcome back kubica! 👏

Posted by: Mack. 22nd November 2018, 11:06 AM

So Kubica confirmed as Williams driver for next year, this is one of the most remarkable sporting comebacks I can think of. It is fantastic to see Kubica back in F1 for next year, never did I think that this would happen after his horrific rally crash back in 2011.

QUOTE
From the human point of view, I understand and see the point that it is a story that probably nobody has believed. Probably the only one who never gave up was myself and the people around me.

"We all knew that it might be something not achievable. This shows that somehow nothing is impossible.

"From the driving point of view, you just have to wait a few months and you will see. If I would not be able to drive competitively enough, I would not be here.

"It is a normal way of thinking that people see my limitations and ask how it is possible I can do it, and I know it is hard to believe.

"But Williams has seen it this year and I have seen it in the last 16 or 18 months since I first drove an F1 car in Valencia last year that I can do it, thanks to work, but also that my limitations are not limiting me as most people are thinking."
Claire Williams:

QUOTE
"It is a great credit to his strength of character and tenacity to return to Formula 1. He has a level of determination that is remarkable to see."

I wish Kubica all the very best in his comeback.

I get that he pushed back a bit but max was right in his face) (p.p.s. what even was their public service? I read that it was at the "discretion of the FIA'... probably nothing and they had to make it look like they took a stance..)

hamilton and vettel doing donuts with alonso at the end was such a nice touch. sad to see him go

It’s disappointing to see him retain a seat when people like Stoff and hell even Ericsson lose their drives despite being better drivers. That’s before you get onto people who are actually fairly talented.
