Over the course of his over half a century long career, David Bowie, born David Robert Jones had 69 top 50 hits, from 1969 to 2016, from Space Oddity to Lazarus.

Following the sad news of his death last Sunday, we are remembering him and all of his fantastic songs.

But out of the 69 which made it into the top 50, which one is the best? That is what Buzzjack will be deciding over the course of this competition.

As a side note, I'm not sure Fame '90, Under Pressure (Rah Mix) should be included as they are remixes of other top 50 hits. Also, Tin Machine/Maggie's Farm (Live), You Belong in Rock 'n' Roll and Baby Universal are included, but those were as part of Tin Machine and not as a solo artist, so I'll let you decide whether they should be included.

You can give up to three 11s and up to three -1s (you probably won't need them though) and decimal scores are allowed. No -0.5s or 10.5 however.

You have 3 weeks to get in your rates. Closes on 7th February, 18:00.

A great excuse to go back and listen to some of the classics! I'll listen to these tomorrow, some I've not heard in years.

For anyone interested, I've made a playlist with all the songs on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/user/joey56/playli...yls4sa8eok64H4a There's a couple I couldn't find including Peace on Earth and1 or 2 at the very end. I've made it collaborative though so if you find them, add them!

Mess that Changes never made the top 40?! I would have given that a good score. Also shame Lazarus didn't do it this week, it would have been quite fitting to include it.

I was just at a tribute night where I heard a lot of tracks that I hadn't heard in a while. I'll be voting in this for sure.

Cat People (the Giorgio Moroder soundtrack version) is missing..so added in here, and it's Arnold Layne the old Pink Floyd song. I Could nitpick about the 1975 version of John I'm Only Dancing which was the listed first track of the double A side, but the 1972 version double A I think was an alternate version of the original single and that's certainly the version I was charting high not the much less good plastic soul version.

I'd also prefer to see classic essentially Bowie top 40 tracks in place of the various remixes though:

All The Young Dudes - Mott The Hoople
The Man Who Sold The World - Lulu
Changes - David Bowie (part of the appeal of buying the 1969 reissue was it was an EP essentially, with Changes on it)

and if we disregard the rubbish streaming charts, this week's actual SALES chart top 40 has Changes and Lazarus in it, so I'd suggest dropping the remix of Under Pressure and Fame in favour of those two. All previous chart positions (bar Where Are We Now) are sales charts, some of them during low-selling periods lower than current downloads. tongue.gif

Of course I'm biased....

I'd like to include these too! Top 40 is a good cap but these are some of his biggest most iconic songs.

Wasn't that a EP?
Actually, it peaked at No°29 on the Singles Chart, so I'll include it.

As for Changes and Lazarus, I'll just change this to include top 50 hits instead.

However, I wouldn't include songs which were only written by David Bowie, or songs which are covers of David Bowie which went in the top 40. Having a writing credit on a song and performing on a song are two different things.

Also, do we include the Tin Machine songs, Fame '90 and Under Pressure (Rah Mix) or not?

Where Are We Now? was on a sale-only chart. It was at #6 in January 2013.

What would it have been?

Quite a few of my favourites clearly didn't chart either - especially from Heathen & Reality.

Was Suffragette City not a single?

I don't want to meddle too much but how many singles/key tracks are missing this way? Severin, would you know?

I do not envy Taylor for having to select and whittle down which tracks to include but it did initially seem like some KEY ones were missing and that's coming from someone who is a recent convert to his music not a longterm fan! 'Suffragete City' probably being the main one now that 'Changes' has been added ohmy.gif

I'd say Tin Machine is a band, Bowie was very clear he wanted to work as part of a band. When listing Paul McCartneys greatest hits they tend to include Wings (which had variable Paul McCartney & Wings credits) but not The Beatles. Similarly Genesis and Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel. The Killers and Brandon Flowers etc...

Remixes are not entirely Bowie, they are other people's work using Bowie's original (with his blessing), but Loving The Alien could also fall into that category if it is (41 peak).

so, Lazarus 09
Changes 09

Baals' Hymn 03
Alabama Song 05 (Ive downgraded!)

(both top 40)

When The Wind Blows 07

(top 50)

any not allowed just ignore laugh.gif

The main tracks that are absent for me are...

All The Young Dudes
Suffragette City
Slow Burn
New Killer Star
Looking For Water
Blackstar
The Man Who Sold The World
The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
Love Is Lost (Remix)
Shadow Man
I'm Afraid Of Americans

...but that's purely because I'm quite fond of them, I can understand if I'm trying to be a little more objective about it why they're not in there...
