Kinda self explanatory, how do you think you did this year in BJSC? We don't have the official stats yet (Bray will get them to us soon surely?) but this is more on how you felt about your year (and possibly others, like what your fave discoveries were) in BJSC. smile.gif

Well for me obviously it was a great year with the win at the start of the year and continuing my impressive streak up to November so largely a positive!

Worse than 2022 in terms of personal results, but I still had a good year overall.

Couldn't have asked for much more from my debut year, 8/10 Qs including finishes of 3rd & 4th! The bronze for MRD was the highlight, but 35 votes for ACRAZE was pretty cool too - if I'm not mistaken, that's the 5th most for any song in a 2023 final, behind only the top 2s in BJSC 154 (38 & 37 votes) and 156 (38 & 39).

One of my best years in BJSC, if not my best! Four top 3 finishes, some of my favourite entries that are high in my end of year lists of all songs.

Bored, so I'll create some categories:

Qualifiers: 10/10
Wins: 0
Top 5s: 4
Top 10s: 5
Top 20s: 9
Favourite entry of my own: Dotter - No Room For Love
Least favourite entry of my own: SVEA - Dead Man Walking
Favourite discovery: NEEA RIVER - All The Way

Overall I'd say it was a success as I qualified in all 10 contests for the first time! Waterbaby kept up my streak of at least one top 10 result every year too which was neat.

I did receive my first ever bottom 5 result in a final and felt like I experienced more finishes in the 30s than usual but yeah not much to complain about at all

To actually answer the question 2023 was mediocre by Persephonia standards results wise, it was my first year of both not having any top 10 hits and finishing outside the EOY top 20 (#spoilers) since 2012, I got a new lowest finish ever in a semi-final and was very close to having 4 DNQs (2 actual DNQs and 2 more that only qualified in either 19th or 20th). But still 80% qualification and still top 30 EOY (#morespoilers) is not bad ~

Perhaps more importantly though I am still very happy to stand behind all 10 of my entries of the year, even the one that nearly crashed out with single figure points in the semi x Baseck is probably the one I will feel least compelled to return to in the future but it's still a banger.

(also found tons of great songs from other people as ever which is the most important of all x)

quickly stealing Rob's format cos why not

Qualifiers: 8/10
Wins: 0
Top 5s: 0
Top 10s: 0
Top 20s: 3
Favourite entry of my own: Maruja - One Hand Behind The Devil
Least favourite entry of my own: Baseck - TIME TO PARTY
Favourite discovery: Nyteout - Angels Forever

Picking my final entry of the year as my favourite may be subject to some slight recency bias but Maruja are a really exciting band for me and I feel like that opinion is going to hold up.

Very tough to pick out just one song as my favourite discovery of the year, I could make a case for at least half of my 18s of the year being the best one (all of my 18s were discoveries this year btw, with only Levellers and LSDXOXO even being artists that I had heard anything from before)! And Dzivia - Voryva was enormously unlucky to have to settle for a 15 by being in the same contest as Nyteout, I think I'd have that somewhere in my top 5 of the year (along with, I'll say in no particular order, Headache - Beginning Of The End, dust - Joy (Guilt) and Fanera - Euforija).

My first year went well-ish.... Much better results came in the 2nd half of the year tho

Qualifiers: 3/7 (I skipped BJSCs 151, 153 and 154)
Wins: 0
Top 5s: 0
Top 10s: 1
Top 20s: 2
Favourite entry of my own: McKinley Dixon - Run, Run, Run
Least favourite entry of my own: TCTS - Never Know
Favourite discovery: Headache - The Beginning Of The End

Even though I didn't give Headache an 18 it's become my favourite BJSC discovery of the year! Also a shoutout to DJ Heartstring - It Ain't Over (Kathaldazia), MRD - Last Dance (Bronzil), M.A.G - 2322332323233333333 (Terra Avium) and Paris Texas - tenTHIRTYseven (Persephonia) who make up the rest of my top 5 BJSC entries this year.

BJSC 157 was my favourite contest for sure. The song quality standard was really high and I got my first ever Q in that contest!

Qualifiers: 9/10
Wins: 0
Top 5s: 3
Top 10s: 5
Top 20s: 7
Favourite entry of my own: FIZZ - High In Brighton (robbed! but Voryva is a close second)
Least favourite entry of my own: WIIGZ - French Tips (I guess the DNQ put a dampener on it although I still enjoy it a lot)
Favourite discovery: Nabihah Iqbal - Zone 1 to 6000 (an incredible song - and I know it's going to become one of my all-time favourite songs, let alone just favourite BJSC entries. Shoutout to Headache too, which is better than any other song I've discovered from BJSC in many years, these two are absolute gems and I love them more than almost all of my own entries this year.)

I can't grumble at all, I thought 2022 would be hard to beat, with two silver medals, but I achieved the same in 2023. And five top 10s was amazing. I went into the year with one objective: 'don't blend in'. And it mostly paid off quite well, plus all but one of my 10 entries ended up in my own top 40 songs of the year, with three top 10, so these are all songs I love.

An okay year, I didn't really have any massive hits like last year too, but I got a few things off the list and it did end really well with a spinoff medal position so not too bad. Still had to struggle with Japan entries getting a buff in my estimations and seemingly a nerf in most people's but I've also been mining from that scene long enough that generic hits from there are hitting me the same as generic hits from anywhere, i.e. not at all, so that may help moving forward.

Qualifiers: 7/10
Wins: 0
Top 5s: 0
Top 10s: 0
Top 20s: 2
Favourite entry of my own: MIKAZUKI Bigwave - Emotional Prism (though Haru Nemuri and Suisei could also be it, which I say as my entries this year haven't been on the same level for me that they've been in past years and it's been more flat at the top, need to get a bit of the blind standom back, which I have in part with Soiree which is why I mention it (Suisei is so cool!!!) but also Emotional Prism and Deconstruction were really cool entries that started my year off great)
Least favourite entry of my own: Ad Infinitum - Upside Down (it's a bit 'metal entry on autopilot' that shouldn't have Qed over my NQs)
Favourite discovery: Nyteout - Angels Forever (and it won!)

Qualifiers: 7/10
Wins: hahahahahahahaha
Top 5s: 1
Top 10s: 2
Top 20s: 5
Favourite entry of my own: Kosheen, Pet Shop Boys, Cockney Rebel, Corinne Bailey Ray
Least favourite entry of my own: I love 'em all, don't enter anything I don't love, but least-loved is Bally Sagoo's because it's not available to buy
Favourite discovery: Gone With The Wind Is My Love - Rita & The Tiaras (Thanks Simon!)

for me it's a pretty good BJSC year, I decided to focus a bit more on picking ones likely to qualify rather than ones just to be very different from previous entries and that turned out well for the most part, with a few more risky ones thrown in so I don't get TOO safe or predictable. Where some fail to qualify I take comfort in them making the BJ top 75 or getting critical success elsewhere, and mostly only just getting pipped at the post in the semis.

So, a 2010's Pet Shop Boys album track, a 2023 Jungle cool dancerap gem, 80's Indie minor classic, 2023 Stevie Nicks-ish 70's-ish pop, noughties drum n bass obscurity, 50-year-old orchestral choral sprawling glam rock obscurity, and late 80's US synthrock obscurity were the finalists, so that's pretty varied. Just missing, a new punkpop classic, a frantic indierock gem and 90's Bollywood haunting vampire obscurity.

I got my first win after over ten years of participating which definitely made this year a memorable one, I also had two further top 10 hits which is quite rare, and they were both quite unexpected to me at least. I was also really pleased to send some risky genres (Decemberists and Lankum) and both performed well, didn't feel I had to pander as much for fear of DNQing which is good. I still had three DNQs so not perfect, but it by a mile beats the dismal second half of 2022.

I was close in the update before the last contest so I'm hoping the top 10 for terra firma can get me a new peak in the EOY, just gotta wait and see x

Qualifiers: 7/10
Wins: 1
Top 5s: 2
Top 10s: 3
Top 20s: 6
Favourite entry of my own: Nyteout - Angels Forever (admittedly the win propped it up, but I'd still call it my favourite)
Least favourite entry of my own: Synecdoche Montauk - Wherever You Are (I do still like this, just haven't gone back to it as much as the others)
Favourite discovery: Dzivia - Voryva (This and myself as the top 2 for that contest will be one that will likely never be beaten x)
