Chart Commentary

Soaring to an unexpected #1 debut this week, American singer/songwriter Alec Benjamin achieves his best position to date with Let Me Down Slowly. Roughly two years ago, he made his debut with End of the Summer, a track that debuted at #16 on just a day or two of impact. I thought it would go on to be a huge hit for me, but it actually dropped in its first full week and quickly slid out of the chart (it deserved to be a hit, I still enjoy it now). He then scored a minor #34 hit with demo I Built a Friend that summer. I Built a Friend came back for more last year, when its final version was released. It became his first top 10 hit, peaking at #6. Let Me Down Slowly is his first top 5 hit

2018 01 Let Me Down Slowly | 3 | 1-... (1+ weeks)

Also new in this week's top 5 is the latest single from Jonas Blue. First making my top 10 over two years ago with Fast Car, Rise becomes his third top 10 hit and his highest charting to date. Mama, a #5 hit last year, was his highest peaking until now. It's only his second hit since Mama's huge impact, with Hearts Ain't Gonna Lie with Arlissa bridging the gap. Rise features Jack & Jack, who score their biggest hit to date and first in two years, since their feature on Madison Beer's All For Love made #17.

Just a year ago, Harry Gardner had performed in the Britain's Got Talent semi-finals. He failed to advance further, coming fourth in his heat despite two emotional performances throughout the series. His audition song, an original called Not Alone written about his nan, was released officially at the end of 2017 as a charity single for Alzheimer's Research UK. It made #4 in my chart, and he followed it up with the first single from his debut EP, Falling Down, which made #39. Since then, Harry hasn't charted again, until this week. I finally checked out the full EP, Times New Roman (#15 in my album chart this week), and he sees the fourth and final single from the EP enter in my top 10. Strawberry Vodka therefore becomes his second top 10 hit, new at #7 this week.

Harry Gardner
2017 04 Not Alone | NAS | 4-8-14-22-32-x (5 weeks)
2017 39 Falling Down | 1 | 39-x (1 week)
2018 07 Strawberry Vodka | 4 | 7-... (1+ weeks)

Dominating my singles chart at the moment, Cardi B finally scores her first top 10 hit as a lead artist. I Like It bounces up eight places to #10 following the music video release, and it becomes her third simultaneous top 10 hit, with Rita Ora's Girls and Jennifer Lopez's Dinero dipping one place each to #2 and #3 respectively. Cardi now has four top 10 hits in total, the final one coming from Bruno Mars' Finesse at the start of the year. Her previous best as a lead artist was the #13 peak of Bartier Cardi, achieved in the same week as Finesse's debut. I Like It is a collaboration with Bad Bunny and J Balvin, who both score their first top 10 hit this week. It's Bad Bunny's first hit overall, while J Balvin has three other top 40s, the highest peaking Mi Gente (#12).

One of the most exciting new pop groups around, I went to see Why Don't We live on their Invitation Tour last Sunday. It was a hectic day - I left the house at 8:15am so I could have a full day of being a fangirl waiting outside their hotel. I made friends and we waited for ages.... to find out it was the wrong hotel. We'd been told the wrong place :') then it was a frantic dash across London to go to their correct hotel, and ultimately, after waiting for ages, I met Jonah, Zach and Jack on their way into the venue. It wasn't the time for selfies unfortunately, but Jack (Avery, my favourite whose surname you'll know from my current username) gave me a fistbump, which was the next best thing really!! The concert was a superb experience, although I hadn't actually heard their older EPs in advance (on purpose, I wanted to experience them for the first time live), I still picked up the words quickly and they put on a great show. A particular highlight was hearing Trust Fund Baby live - a two-week #1 in my chart which I'd consider my song of the year.

Naturally, this has all taken a huge impact on my chart! Trust Fund Baby rebounds 18 places back to #8 in its 17th week on my chart, while we see a re-entry from #10 hit These Girls. Something Different and All My Love, older songs from previous EPs, are also new at #31 and #36 respectively. In the album chart, all of their EPs feature (except the Christmas one lol), with the most recent release Invitation leading the way, rebounding 12 places to #2. Why Don't We Just is new at #6, Only the Beginning at #9 and Something Different at #11.

Why Don't We: Singles

2018 13 Boomerang | AT | 13-23-39-x (3 weeks)
2018 31 Something Different | 1* | 31-... (1+ weeks)
2018 36 All My Love | AT | 36-... (1+ weeks)

Why Don't We: Albums
2018 01 Invitation | EP4 | 2-2-1-2-3-4-7-10-11-13-15-11-12-14-2-... (15+ weeks)
2018 06 Why Don't We Just | EP3 | 6-... (1+ weeks)
2018 09 Only the Beginning | EP1 | 9-... (1+ weeks)
2018 11 Something Different | EP2 | 11-... (1+ weeks)

Shawn Mendes holds the #1 spot in the album chart in his first full week, becoming his second multi-week #1 album (Illuminate spent three weeks at the top, Handwritten had one). It's been helped along by my visit to the Shawn pop-up merch store in London on Monday. I went to browse the merchandise on a very spontaneous day out, and ended up arriving just as Shawn stepped out of the shop to leave! There was a big crowd and I didn't get that close but he waved in my direction, it was great and a brilliant surprise. I also splashed out way too much on merchandise laugh.gif

In the singles chart, Benjamin Rihan's Fantasi climbs for a third week, now up to #14 - his personal best once again. Josh Gray also gets a new personal best (solo, he made #6 as part of HomeTown on Roses). Lil Mama, Alawn and Taylor Jones make their top 40 debuts.
