Wow over 100 singles shifted 600+k in the 80's compared to just 26 in the 00's so far!
and there were 160 singles in the 1980s that sold 500,000+ - Alan Jones reported this when the 1980s chart was printed in 1990.

I'm not sure how accurate the actual figures in the chart above are, as Dave B says the figures were calculated by someone else. Black Box (at #20) was reported to have sold 849,000 copies at the end of 1989, in this chart they are on 973,850, which may be the figure that was calculated for the all time top 100 chart in 2002 and will include sales into 1990 and beyond that too. Similarly, Jive Bunny (at #21) was reported to have sold about 820,000 up to the end of 1989 - here it has gained an extra 120,000 sales, again from the 2002 all time list. I think the compilers of the 2002 list revised some historic sales and those sales have been used here. Some sales here are accurate though so there may have been a bit of tweaking to fit guessed sales around known sales. But it is likely the top 100 sold 600,000+ copies.

Comparing sales here to the best sellers for the 1990s, there were 91 records in the 1990s that sold 600,000+ with the top 46 selling 800,000, 32 selling 900,000+ and 25 passing the 1 million sales mark - of which only 11 did in the 1980s. In the 1980s those 11 million sellers were all from 1981 to 1985 (6 from 1984 alone), in the 1990s million sellers were from 1991 to 1999 but mostly from 1994 onwards.

Since the 1980s charts were compiled Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor and Blue Monday by New Order have passed a million (the former doing so last year, the latter in the mid 90s) and from the 1990s charts, Wonderwall by Oasis and Torn by Natalie Imbruglia (both #2 hits) have passed a million sales. Both had been close to a million sales by the end of 1999.

I don't think anyone had access to Top 200s back in the 80s.

[13] BLUE MONDAY - New Order (987,000)

And to think it peaked at #8
just goes to show what sales were like in those days

It's UK's biggest selling 12" single

Don't think Holiday passed 500,000+ until 1991 (but I could be wrong). Plus in 1989, only two singles passed half million mark. I think Like A Prayer passed the half million mark since, but not in 1989.

Saving All My Love For You probably sold 500,000+, but I'm not sure about the others.

Anyone else know?

it peaked at #3 not #8.

Blue Monday sold about 400,000 to 450,000 in 1983 alone when it reached #9, it then sold 170,000 when remixed and issued as a 7" single in 1988 where it peaked at #3 and in between those years it was an ever present on the top 200 weekly charts selling small but consistent amounts of usually several hundred copies per week though it did continue to sell in the low thousands most weeks in 1984.

I don't think anyone had access to Top 200s back in the 80s.
all the top 200s from 1983 onwards (to 1994) are held in the public reference library at the BPI in County Hall, London. The chart reports available include the full top 200 for each week plus "starred out" (ie excluded) songs listed in their proper sales place, chart panel sales for each record that week and total chart panel sales for each record plus a breakdown of sales by format. This is for both singles and albums.

Holiday was certified Gold (for 500,000 shipments) in 1985. My guess is that it sold 200,000 in 1984 and perhaps the same or slightly more in 1985. With back catalogue sales it may have reached 500,000 in the 80s but it could have sold just under that amount.

Saving All My Love For You sold about 450,000 in 1985 so I'd imagine that it eventually reached 500,000. Like Holiday it too was certified Gold for 500,000 shipments.

Thanks for the information Rob thumbup.gif Do you know if I've missed any other 500,000+ sellers? I've heard Bangles - Eternal Flame was the 161st biggest seller of the 80s and was the biggest non half million seller?
