30th April 2017
It's Weezer on top. They took Buddy Holly to 10 in 1995, Hash Pipe to 5, and Island In The Sun to 8 in 2001, and last charted in 2008, but 22 years late they finally get a number one with fab hooky inspirational Feels Like Summer. Hurts have topped twice before, in 2013 with Calvin Harris, and in 2015 with song Wings. Band Wings topped my charts in 1972, Emeli Sande topped last year with the song Hurts, so will the band Hurts get a 3rd to bring it full circle? At the mo they are up at 2. Highest new entry is a 3rd top 20 in a few weeks for Gorillaz, a gorgeous album track called Busted and Blue. Busted and Blue are also bands, though only Blue has topped my chart (Fly By II), spoiling my theme...! This Ole House was a Shakin Stevens hit. Happily, Rick Astley hasn't covered that one, he's done a very Ragnbone Man styled track which is possibly his best record since Never Gonna Give You Up. Rick on a roll! In at 24. Drake shoots up to 34 with Passionfruit. Yes, I know, his first top 40 here for 2 or 3 years after I went right off his mega-autotuning-based recent over-rated drones. 5 years on since he hit 4 with Rihanna - Take Care. TLC are back! With Snoop filling in for the late lamented Left-Eye, and like Weezer, debuting in the mid-90's. TLC only had to wait 5 years to top my chart though (Waterfalls, 1999). Good to have 'em back, it's been a gap of 15 years! Record Store day has an influx of oldie faves this week, while Guardians Of The Galaxy adds another soundtrack oldie - and I've yet to see the film I expect to be my top film of 2017 till Star Wars (no expectations to live up to then!) - Glen Campbell's Southern Nights, originally hit my top 10 in 1977. Paul Weller is back, for a smooth 40 years of chart success since The Jam popped in, also in 1977. Amy MacDonald is also back, but she's only had a mere 10 years of chart entries. 1 7 1 4 FEELS LIKE SUMMER Weezer 285000 2 13 2 2 BEAUTIFUL ONES Hurts 147000 3 3 3 3 IN MY WORLD Lindsey Buckingham & Christine McVie 191000 4 2 1 6 WE GOT THE POWER Gorillaz featuring Jehnny Beth 635000 5 1 1 6 CHARIOTS Paper Route 442000 6 5 5 6 WAITING FOR THE STARS Vitalic featuring David Shaw and The Beat 231200 7 4 2 3 CRAZY (ASH HOWES RADIO EDIT) Bird 230000 8 6 6 6 TRUTH IS A BEAUTIFUL THING London Grammar 214400 9 9 5 6 LOST ON YOU LP 295000 10 8 1 7 SEASONS (WAITING ON YOU) Future Islands 570000 11 10 4 6 CAN I SIT NEXT TO YOU Spoon 311000 12 12 12 2 HURRICANE Drones Club 70000 13 11 1 7 ALONE AGAIN OR Love 664000 14 18 14 6 BECAUSE The Beatles 116150 15 NEW 15 1 BUSTED AND BLUE Gorillaz 27000 16 15 1 12 CHAINED TO THE RHYTHM Katy Perry featuring Skip Marley 1236250 17 17 17 6 ON MY MIND Disciples 119700 18 19 18 3 THUMBS Sabrina Carpenter 53100 19 14 10 7 UNDER YOUR SKIN SeeB and R. Hi John
I wasn't expecting to see Weezer at number 1 here, but I really like Feels Like Summer. Also great to see the beautiful 'Beautiful Ones' at number 2. Underrated group, they actually had some good songs in the beginning of this decade. It's a pity Lost On You has stalled at number 9. It's a fantastic song. I wish it was a big hit in the UK chart. Solo Dance now top 20. Oh! Rick Astley new at #24. I've heard it now, his voice is so different in this song. Good chart! |

Good to see a new entry from the wonderful Sophie B Hawkins. Did you put it in because it was played on the radio on Peter Kay's Car Share?

Hi Jason, glad you like Weezer as it's gettign a 2nd week on top Hurts were fab, and are fab, very under-appreciated in the UK. LP was on Jools Holland so she may well get a boost of sorts, even if it's just general awareness rather than an actual hit. My so-called-mate has said I no longer resemble Mary Berry (I don't!) I now look like LP (I don't!!!) - he's so mean to me just cos I say he resembles Susan Boyle! cheers! john |

Good to see a new entry from the wonderful Sophie B Hawkins. Did you put it in because it was played on the radio on Peter Kay's Car Share? Ho Rollo, I didn't realise it was on Peter Kay, that explains why it made the itunes top 100 that week! I tend to allow oldies that feature in films or make the itunes charts (unless they have charted many times already). Fab record! cheers john |

Lana's is another goodie, she seems to be doing her best stuff since her first album, and yes Blondie sounds like it could easily have come off peak-period Blondie albums, give or take her voice a bit more mature-sounding these days. cheers! john |

Thanks PD, glad you like the chart - I'm probably further away from the singles chart than I have ever been in my life (it's all a bit samey-sounding these days), but I'm still a huge fan of brilliantly-created singles/tracks, hit or flop, either way is fine with me.. |
