The second of three (!) adaptations of Pinocchio released this year along with the Disney remake earlier this year and the upcoming video game, Lies of P. This is a reimagining by Guillermo Del Toro which sticks more to the original source material or Carlo Carlodi than it does to Disney's well-known 1940 version.

This is glorious, just wanted to share this and recommend it in case anyone is interested! Puts that cynical, cash-grabbing Disney remake earlier in the year to shame. It's got familiar themes for Del Toro with 1930s Fascism and the similar surreal escapism found in Pan's Labyrinth, but it works so well. The animation is gorgeous, the story really respects the darkness of the source material and I love that it reframes the classic idea of him learning to be obedient and not lie. The performances are also brilliant and it packs so much emotion in - the first and last few minutes are some of the closest I'm come to crying when watching a film this year :'(
