Aussies would listen to anything as long as it says "made in America". Being a Kylie fan for instance, during the Aphrodite promotions there (she did a bunch of news interviews and perfs on 2 shows), they never mentioned her being the 1st female artist to score #1s in 4 decades in the UK...no. All they were blabbing on about is Aphrodite going top 20 on the US Billboard chart.
Infact in the last couple of years, I'm surprised British artists don't have to break it in the US to make it to the Aus charts as Mumford and Sons, Passenger, Naughty Boy and Rudimental have all demonstrated. And now that Clean Bandit song is doing well too (and deservedly so, I love it!). |

Again, sorry for dragging Kylie back to the topic, but another example is when a Kylie song doesn't do well and everyone's like "oh she doesn't do well here anymore because she needs to promote". I often want to ask them why a JLo or a Britney would do well as they hardly promote there! It's sad they live in denial that they're a US-wannabe country when it comes to taste in popular culture.

To be honest I agree with a lot of this. Australia is very... "culturally weak" in that they kind of just take in stuff from other countries constantly rather than contributing themselves. They remind me of Ireland in that way, except Ireland is a lot more affected by Britain of course. I mean singles by American artists often take off in Australia before they do in the US, I swear sometimes Katy Perry singles go to #1 on Australian iTunes about a week after they're announced |

But Australia's fascination for the US never ceases to amaze me. By that yardstick, I quite like the NZ charts - they seem so much more, erm "independent". Didn't even Gwyneth Paltrow have a huge hit in Aus in the early part of the century? |

Two with her cover versions of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" with Huey Lewis [#1] & Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" [#3]. Mostly because the "Duets" movie was huge there. |

I love the Aussie charts but they're so odd especially the certifications, I know they're based on shipments but everything goes at least Platinum I swear!

I love the Aussie charts but they're so odd especially the certifications, I know they're based on shipments but everything goes at least Platinum I swear! Only a few fanbase-heavy and/or local artists get physical releases anymore so it's not really due to shipments The sales thresholds are just really low, I guess it's like if Platinum in the UK was around 125k. It's at least useful to have them like this since actual sales figures are almost never released, but they're still far from perfect as they don't tick over automatically; rather labels have to request/apply for them in some way which means updating is often belated (eg Trumpets going from no cert -> 3x Platinum recently), and occasionally suspicious overcertifications.

Lea Michele so high.
Nice to see Peking Duk top 20. Good alternative dance song. Paloma charting well on albums without a hit too. |

It's her highest charting album in Oz, Fall to Grace could only make #49 so it's a good improvement I actually see potential in 'Can't Rely On You' though, currently #122 on iTunes which isn't *bad*!

Unfortunately Can't Rely On You is actually on its way out. It peaked at #64 last week, I think it's her only charting hit here though.

Wow at Never Be The Same already matching the peak of To The End Of The Earth and smashing Beautiful's peak in the debut week! I won't get myself too hyped up for it peaking any higher but it's still #23 on iTunes. I think she should have released this or Kiss Me Hello over Beautiful as the third single, much as I love it.
