4. FSR Rontvia - Love Song by Sara Bareilles
Only 20 countries entered this time. I thought the contest would be gaining in popularity but it looks like some countries have had enough of it already. Kylienips entered one of my favourite songs,Blue Monday by New Order. I know and like all four of the songs they have submitted up to this point. Sara Bareeilles won by 5 points ahead of Pull Shapes by Pipettes (Utopia) and Chelsea by Stefy (Kopecka). The Sara Bareeilles song is really cheerful. I like the piano. She sounds like Jem but with a bigger voice. The single got to no.4 in the US and the UK but she has had no other UK Top 40 hits. I had not heard of her before. 8.7 out of 10 |

It's a sweet song, though I eventually got sick of it through overplay. I'd give it a 6/10 myself, it isn't a song I listen to out of choice.

I was a fan of 'Love Song' at the time but have gone off it a little over the years. I still admire the lyrical themes of it but it just doesn't sound as good to my ears these days. Still, the best thing I have heard from Sara and the second best winner so far after Britney. 'Pull Shapes' would've been a brilliant winner (I went on to recycle The Pipettes in a spinoff with the much inferior 'Judy' ) and I'm glad it did take the title when the contest was re-ran in Re:LOADED. 'Blue Monday' is of course a classic
Will rank the winners as you go along tbh 01. Mdiče // Britney Spears - And Then We Kiss (Junkie XL Remix) [BJSC 1] 02. FSR Rontvia // Sara Bareilles - Love Song [BJSC 4] 03. Bhangra // Dixie Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice [BJSC 3] 04. Bokia // Katharine McPhee - Dangerous [BJSC 2] |

Yassss. I should note that I sent it before it smashed in the UK, I wasn't being cheap. I actually had been loving it since about September 2007 when I heard a demo on MySpace so could have easily sent it to the first contest!
I'd say Love Song is in my all-time top 10, I still absolutely adore it. Pretty sure I gave Pull Shapes my 12 so that could have been a magnificent foot shooting moment! This post has been edited by gooddelta: Jun 28 2017, 08:25 PM |

Love Song and Pull Shapes is definitely the best top 2 out of the options so far, either would have been great and Love Song has held up well (the lyrics especially) even though as far as Rontvian winners go far better was to come.

Oh this thread is bringing back the memories. It's hard to believe this is almost ten years ago! To me, I don't think my entries have changed all that much as I try and send songs that I'm liking at the time, although the Dixie Chicks came two years after release so perhaps I was just going for the win. Glad I did though. Haven't even come top three since!

lucky for you that back then it was a bit easier to get a win, now with over 60 contestants it's quite a challenge - took me over 50 times to get a win

5. Eledan - Gomenasai by t.A.T.u.
With 27 countries entering,a semi-final was needed for the second time. Sugababes,Taylor Swift and Nirvana were all involved but tATu romped away to a comfortable victory by 32 points, becoming the first non American winners. Temple Of Love by BWO (Cascadia) finished 2nd with Je Ne Parle Pas Francais by Girls Aloud (Farahtyn) 3rd. All The Things She Said is my favourite no.1 single from 2000-2009 and the follow up Not Gonna Get Us is even better but both of those records were produced by one of my musical heroes,Trevor Horn, and tATu without Trevor Horn are a bit like Dollar without Trevor Horn, flat and listless. Having said that, this is a pleasant enough piano and strings ballad with sweet vocals. Julia and Lena didn't want it to be released as a single. Gomenasai means "I'm sorry" in Japanese. 7.2 out of 10. |

I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the earlier winners but Gomenasai stands out, the Japanese term does feel a bit shoehorned in, but it's such a beautiful song. It was one of my favourite discoveries I made when I listened to all the winners. Doubt it would come anywhere near winning these days, even with who it's by.
Will try and keep up with this! This post has been edited by Chez Wombat: Jun 29 2017, 06:13 PM |

Gomenasai is a lovely little track, very good early winner.
I'm really curious as to who animated that video now, it's not very good by the standards I'm used to but whoever did it clearly knew their influences, it looks like a mishmash of 'every anime ever prior to 2000'. |

'Gomenasai' is lovely and a pretty unique winner. I was only aware of t.a.T.u's three UK top 10s (including THAT monster hit) prior to BJSC; this and also 'Fly on the Wall' in another early BJSC were great discoveries.
01. Mdiče // Britney Spears - And Then We Kiss (Junkie XL Remix) [BJSC 1] 02. Elėdan [π] // t.A.T.u. - Gomenasai [BJSC 5] 03. FSR Rontvia // Sara Bareilles - Love Song [BJSC 4] 04. Bhangra // Dixie Chicks - Not Ready To Make Nice [BJSC 3] 05. Bokia // Katharine McPhee - Dangerous [BJSC 2] |

6. Quotosibb - Black Butta (Live) by Beverley Knight
A star studded line-up assembled including Adele,The Corrs,Bjork,Westlife and Tom Jones. There was no rule preventing previous winners being entered and Katherine McPhee returned but could only finish 22nd. My vote would have gone to the wonderful They by Jem which finished 4th. Beverley Knight finished 15 points ahead of I Don't Know by Lily Allen (Ashton) and Evanescence's no.1 single Bring Me To Life was 3rd for Xanaga. As the winner is a live version,I have taken a guess at this performance from 2007. Beverley belts the song out and the live band are very good but soul music is not my thing and she gets a bit shouty in places so for me this is the worst winner so far. The song is from her fifth album 'Music City Soul'. 4.3 out of 10. |

The version that was entered was her performance on Jools Holland, I don't think it's on YouTube any more.
