Is it safe to assume that there won’t be any studio recordings of TOTP this year for Christmas/New Years Day broadcasting?
I wish it wasn’t the case, but I just can’t see why artists would turn up go play when there wouldn’t be a live studio audience, so that’s what got me thinking it may be cancelled this year. Any thoughts? |

I’ve been checking this and haven’t seen anything about it so fear it might be, wonder if that’ll be the end of it overall as they changed the time to 11.35 last year which was ridiculous imo

It will be a noteworthy absence from the festive programme.

Generally it's only confirmed in the annual "here's what's coming this Christmas on the BBC" from the press office - and we've not had that yet. In fact, it's been the Tuesday of that week going back the last 3 years at least.. so perhaps next Tuesday will be the day we'll get confirmation This post has been edited by AcerBen: Nov 19 2020, 10:14 AM |

Oh I didn't realise that so there's still hope, fingers crossed!
Fearne Cottons twitter is usually good for confirmation as she presents but obviously Clara is in Strictly so they would have to see the triumphant return of Reggie!!! This post has been edited by Steve201: Nov 19 2020, 01:59 PM |

This is the latest update for it from Fearne a few weeks ago, hoping it will go ahead (but hasn't heard anything) |

Any thoughts? If the artists are going to get paid then they will turn up whether there is an audience or not. It will most likely happen but as previously mentioned be without an audience. As long as none of the artists or production crew have Covid there's no reason why it should be cancelled altogether. |

Any thoughts? The 1979 Christmas show was done with no audience but you didn't really notice considering how stitled they were in that period. Was that the one Noel Edmonds filmed from a radio 1 record store because of trade union disagreements?

TOTP Saturday had no crowd! It'd work, I think.

Sounds about right - it highlights how boring the charts have been as every year on TOTP they just have pop acts, anonymous DJs and the odd male solo artist in the form of Capaldi or this year Dermot! Joel Corey is bound to fit 15 performances in!! |

Strange and that’s just the way they did it? Both 1978 and 1979 Christmas Day editions of Top Of The Pops were affected by industrial action. At least the 1979 edition was recorded in a studio (although there was no audience). The 1978 edition didn't even have that luxury and was recorded in a small office. |

Yes! I knew it was something to do with industrial action! It was common place both at the BBC and ITV at the time. There were a number of strikes at the BBC in December 1978 which culminated in a major strike just before Christmas which took BBC 1 and 2 off air and Radios 1, 2, 3 and 4 being unable to broadcast normal programming and instead having to all join together for a BBC National station which saw pop music played alongside classical music alongside plays and The Archers! In late 1979 another set of strikes hit the BBC, two editions of Top Of The Pops were hit by strikes and had to show video clips and repeated performances. A Doctor Who story (Shada, for Doctor Who fans) had to be abandoned and then when things seemed to have returned to normal the door staff at the BBC recording studios went on strike meaning no audiences could attend recordings! ITV also struggled - a strike took them off air between early August and the end of October. All that was left to watch was BBC1 and 2. Top Of The Pops was affected again in 1980 when a Musicians Union strike took the porgrame off air for about 10 weeks in June, July and the beginning of August...

Yeh I remember this from the Story of TOTP editions. The 1980 musicians strike meant Michael Hurll had a chance to completely revamp the show with a new theme tune and studio set up.
