Dan Evans playing really well this week, he's into the semi-finals of Monte Carlo. He's the first British man to reach a Masters semi since Andy Murray in 2016.

I've just been watching my favourite player, Camila Giorgi, in the first round in Rome. She was beaten 7-6 6-7 7-5 by Sara Sorribes Tormo in a dramatic, fluctuating match that lasted for 3 hours 51 minutes, making it the sixth longest WTA match ever. She led 4-1 40-15 in the final set but somehow managed to muck it up from that position. mellow.gif

British number one Dan Evans lost in the first round of the Italian Open against American opponent Taylor Fritz.

Evans, who is ranked a career-high 26th in the world, has enjoyed success on the clay this season, but was out of sorts in a 6-3 6-2 defeat in Rome.

British number one Johanna Konta was outplayed by Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko in the Italian Open first round but Cameron Norrie won his opener.

Konta, a French Open semi-finalist in 2019, offered little resistance in a 6-3 6-1 defeat by the 2017 Roland Garros champion.

Earlier in the day, Norrie beat Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4 6-4 to continue his good form on clay.

Serena Williams saw the 1,000th match of her illustrious career end in a straight-set defeat by Argentina's Nadia Podoroska at the Italian Open.

The 39-year-old American, playing her first competitive match since mid-February, was beaten 7-6 (8-6) 7-5.

Podoroska looked assured in her first meeting with the 23-time Grand Slam champion as she reached the last 16.

Naomi Osaka suffered a second straight defeat on clay, while Simona Halep's title defence was ended by injury.

Japanese world number two Osaka lost 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 to American Jessica Pegula in a blow to her preparations for the French Open, which starts on 30 May.

Rafael Nadal saved two match points to overcome a huge test from Denis Shapovalov and reach the Italian Open quarter-finals.

The Spaniard was a set and a break down but outlasted the Canadian to win 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-3) in a near three-and-a-half-hour contest.

Nadal, chasing a 10th title in Rome, forced a third-set tie-break by saving match points at 6-5.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic reached his 15th Rome quarter-final in a row.

The world number one and defending champion dropped his opening serve but recovered immediately to beat Spanish qualifier Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2 6-1.

Andy Murray will not play at the French Open and will instead focus on preparing for the grass-court season.

The British former world number one played doubles with Liam Broady at the Italian Open but turned down a wildcard for this week's Geneva Open.

Murray's doubles return was his first match since March, after he pulled out of the Miami Open with a groin injury.

Number 4 seed Dominic Thiem already out having been 2 sets up in his match and Grigor Dimitrov loses after leading by 2 sets and 5-1 but that was down to an injury.

Naomi Osaka earns lots of money from sponsors who would expect her to turn up for press conferences so I don't have much sympathy for her.

Making a stand for athletes like this is pretty damn good. Only a few would have the power to do this and she's one of them - and her willingness to speak up like this is part of the reason she's one of my most liked players in tennis at the moment. I've never seen the sense in speaking to losing athletes and getting gotcha lines from a tired person - they should be able to duck out if they choose.

Talk she may be disqualified for this, which is pretty brave, that would really set eyes on the issue.
