Can anyone tell me why “Show Me Heaven” by Maria McKee was awarded a Silver certification last year but sold over 400,000 in 1990 and was awarded Gold.

The answer is that until 2013, when automated certifications started, record companies could decide whether they wanted to apply to the BPI for certification, and in 1990 CBS UK (as Sony was then ) chose not to apply in case. I would guess it was because Maria McKee was not actually signed to them.

Die For You becoming the first proper album track on Starboy to be certified is a really pleasant surprise!!
It was only in the top 100 for the album release week and was below an interlude (!) so I'm really pleased at how well it's done, easily my favourite album track from The Weeknd! |

'Criticize' sold around 250k in the 80s; around 450k in total. Unsure what 'Respect' sold in the 60s but I assume its total is between 750k-800k. 'Should I Stay or Should I Go?' reached #17 in 1982 and later reached #1 in 1991 and sold ~240k. Adding all its sales together, its total must hit 900k+. It was certified Gold in December 2018 so is selling an average of ~2.9k a week, which is much higher than I would expect! Should be a million seller early next year if not before. |
