Another year of charts has finished which means it's time to whip this thread out. Regulars of the chart forum will note that this usually takes several months to get done. I usually blame my cohost Jáhq for this and this year will be no different.

Same set-up as last year anyhow. In this thread Jáhq (well, now Joseph ~) and myself will count down an alternative end of year chart for 2013 which isn't based on silly sales information but instead on a points system whereby in each week of the year, 100 points are awarded to the #1 of the week, 99 to the #2 and so on down to 1 point to the #100 of the week (chart information compiled as ever by the Official Charts Company and used here without permission because who cares rly). We're slowly revealing the 200 songs and 50 albums which racked up the most of those points across the 52 chart weeks of the year.

To clarify, this is counting from W/E 12/01/2013 (when James Arthur topped the singles chart for the third and last time with 'Impossible' and Calvin Harris' '18 Months' album returned to #1) to W/E 04/01/2014 (when Pharrell {Williams} climbed to the top of the singles chart with 'Happy' and Robbie Williams had a 4th non-consecutive week at #1 with his album 'Swings Both Ways').

Fun stats: 874 different songs inhabited the top 100 at some point in 2013, another year-on-year increase and the highest number since 2005 when 983 different songs charted (in the top 75 only as it was at the time). Just 13 songs passed the 2,000 point mark in 2013, down from 18 in 2012, while only 74 songs managed 1,000 points or more, down from 79 in 2012.

Here are the songs that missed the top 200 (point ties are broken first by peak, then by number of weeks then finally alphabetically by artist then song):

200 ~ Naughty Boy - Lifted [feat. Emeli Sandé]
(8-12-19-24-45-x)
397pts ~ 05wks

199 ~ Pharrell - Happy
(71-30-4-2-1-...)
397pts ~ 05wks

198 ~ Wretch 32 - Blackout [feat. Shakka]
(6-12-20-31-50-89-x)
398pts ~ 06wks

197 ~ The Pogues - Fairytale Of New York [feat. Kirsty MacColl]
(RE-85-53-16-15-14-24-...)
399pts ~ 06wks

196 ~ Gabz - Lighters (The One)
(6-19-36-37-51-65-90-x)
403pts ~ 07wks

In an annoyingly Calum-appeasing fashion, Naughty Boy & Emeli Sandé's 'Lifted' scrapes into the top 200. It was a huge flop in comparison to previous single 'La La La' though, giving Naughty Boy what he deserved for needlessly running back to Emeli. The final #1 of the year from Pharrell also makes an appearance by the skin of its teeth, his other two #1s are much higher up of course. Wretch 32's brilliant 'Blackout', featuring one Shakka, is at #198 - like Naughty Boy, Wretch has suddenly disappeared as a chart force since this. I blame the fact he collaborated with Naughty and Emeli on 'Pluto'. Making an appearance in the top 200 for the third year in a row, at #197 is festive fave 'Fairytale Of New York' by The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl, which is sadly beaten by Mariah for the first time this year. Finally, supposedly 'talented' recently-turned-15 singer Gabz is at #196 with 'Lighters (The One)', a song she performed three times during her run on Britain's Got Talent, in which she finished 7th. She apparently has other songs as well but don't expect any to ever chart.

Another year of charts has finished which means it's time to whip this thread out. Regulars of the chart forum will note that this usually takes several months to get done. I usually blame my cohost Jáhq for this and this year will be no different.

It doesn't have to take that long - I can simply plug numbers instead of sales into my YTD spreadsheets, and it'll crunch them in seconds. smile.gif

Once I have this week's T200's from C+, I could send you a dropbox link to the output?

Surely the number-crunching is the easy bit. The commentary takes a little longer.

The numbers have already been crunched - if they hadn't how would I know what came 196th-200th? tongue.gif

If you used a proper exponential decay function for the formula instead of a boring linear 100 pts for #1 down to 1 pt for #100 (which isn't really representative of the sales) for working out chart points, you wouldn't have to use tie-breakers because the chances of a song having the EXACT same chart run as another are vanishingly small, but THERE YOU GO.

Regardless, I look forward to seeing this completed in September.

*Last bitchy comment of 2013 - I promise.

Well part of the point of compiling this is that it doesn't directly represent sales, so it punishes songs that sold a lot in a few weeks and then plummeted tongue.gif The main flaw of that being that it also naturally punishes any songs released at the end of a year whether they're long-lived or not. But I don't claim it to be a flawless chart, it's just an alternative to your bog standard end of year sales chart ~

(also I wouldn't know how to implement such a formula even if I wanted to)

195 ~ Dizzee Rascal - Love This Town [feat. Teddy Sky]
(43-44-52-40-35-45-51-85-x)
413pts ~ 08wks

194 ~ Florence + The Machine - Spectrum
(...-35-40-52-75-82-89-66-73-83-94-98-x(5)-73-x(4)-71-x(8)-95-x(1)-80-96-x)
414pts ~ 16wks

193 ~ Rudimental - Right Here [feat. Foxes]
(72-x(13)-63-24-14-23-33-62-x)
416pts ~ 07wks

192 ~ Ed Sheeran - I See Fire
(13-21-54-x(2)-47-20-32-...)
419pts ~ 06wks

191 ~ Bastille - Laura Palmer
(92-57-58-44-42-50-47-42-62-95-x)
421pts ~ 10wks

A Dizzee song that I can actually tolerate opens up this section. Typical that Radio 1 would snub what is probably my favourite Dizzee Rascal single but I hear that he went on a twitter rant regarding the snub and that may actually have helped the single which managed a couple of weeks at the lower end of the top 40. Moving from my favourite single from an artist I usually dislike to my least favourite single from an artist I normally love, a huge #1 from 2012 is just ahead with "Spectrum" floating around the top 100 a fair amount and re-entering a few times. The follow-up to "Waiting All Night", a decent track called "Right Here", is at #193. Shame this made it in when the much better Foxes feature (Zedd's "Clarity") sits just outside the top 200. sad.gif Ed Sheeran's soundtrack single for the second Hobbit movie, titled "I See Fire", sits at #192. It's a pretty decent song which helps to keep his name out there and it's performed well for a song only written for a soundtrack, re-entering the top 40 following the release of the movie earlier this month. Ending my first section is "Laura Palmer" which unluckily just peaked outside of the top 40 (at #42) on two non-consecutive weeks. Taken from their album "Bad Blood", it's OK but not a patch on Pompeii (which might do pretty well for them here~).

190 ~ Tinie Tempah - Children Of The Sun [feat. John Martin]
(6-8-24-33-56-80-x(2)-79-...)
421pts ~ 07wks

189 ~ Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You
(RE-98-68-47-14-12-13-30-...)
425pts ~ 07wks

188 ~ Wiley - Lights On [feat. Angel and Tinchy Stryder]
(9-16-24-32-44-64-85-x)
433pts ~ 07wks

187 ~ Coldplay - Paradise
(...-41-54-67-61-67-76-x(24)-62-49-69-x(1)-76-94-81-x(1)-77-x)
439pts ~ 13wks

186 ~ DJ Fresh - Gold Dust [feat. Ce'Cile]
(...-22-25-27-39-44-58-72-89-96-99-x)
439pts ~ 10wks

Making a straight clone of 'Written In The Stars' didn't work too well for Tinie Tempah. 'Children Of The Sun' featuring Swede John Martin had all the makings of a huge hit but sadly underperformed, missing the top 5 and vanishing from the chart in less than 2 months. It's #190 here. Just ahead is Mariah Carey with her 1994 Christmas hit, finally included on the 'Now That's What I Call Christmas' album this year, helping the song to be the highest Christmas classic on this year's countdown. (The Pogues still have moral victory though). Believe it or not, Brit rapper Wiley had three top 10 hits in 2013. The first of those to appear is 'Lights On', a post-album single which was manipulated into a high chart debut by being made album-only ahead of release, a sneaky tactic that one Emeli Sandé may be attempting with her features on albums by James Arthur and Tinie Tempah. 'Lights On' was a second #9 hit for Angel who infamously also has two #41 hits. It also returned Tinchy Stryder to the top 10 long after he stopped being relevant. Maybe he could yet make a comeback. The last two songs in this section are both (relative) oldies but goodies. Coldplay's 2011 track and 2012 #1 'Paradise' makes the top 200 again at #187 after a continuing top 100 presence throughout the year due to various boosts. At #186 is DJ Fresh's breakthrough hit 'Gold Dust' featuring Ce'Cile, which finally peaked at #22 in the first week of 2013 despite first charting in 2010 (and with an instrumental version of the track dating all the way back to 2008). The song has had 21 weeks top 40 despite its low peak.

184 ~ Calvin Harris and Alesso - Under Control [feat. Hurts]

(70-x(2)-95-84-69-55-30-40-37-42-66-100-x(7)-95-x(12)-85-x(1)-93-x)

182 ~ The Saturdays - Disco Love
(5-14-30-31-40-50-83-x)

181 ~ Birdy - Skinny Love
(RE-64-x(6)-71-45-44-62-x(1)-96-96-65-49-43-54-97-x(7)-69-x)
458pts ~ 13wks

"Get Hyper" is one of many songs that I proclaim to be the worst of the year. It's noise with annoying vocals and not a single appealing quality to me. Thankfully this kind of thing doesn't tend to be massive, achieving a #29 peak for London-based producer Droideka. Our first 2013 debut #1 of the countdown (although Sam Bailey is outside the top 200) comes from Calvin Harris and Alesso. Although only being able to chart for five weeks explains this position, it's not sticking around that well regardless with only two weeks in the top 10. Shame performance has been poor as it's become one of my very favourites from Calvin. sad.gif American sisters Haim started the year by topping the BBC 'Sound Of...' poll and went on to have some success with debut album "Days Are Gone" going straight in at #1. Their only single to make the top 200 of this here countdown is "Falling", my personal favourite although I do like them all, one of the best breakthrough acts of the year! "Disco Love", taken from the album "Living For The Weekend", is the first of two appearances from BuzzJack faves The Saturdays in the top 200. It followed up the terrible "Gentleman" and thankfully wasn't harmed too much by how that underperformed, giving them another top 10 'hit' (even if it didn't hang around for long as we've come to expect from them). Birdy makes what appears to be an annual appearance now, this year at #181 - higher than the single she released last year. I can't recall where the different re-entries came from this time but Dancing on Ice, Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent are probably good guesses.

180 ~ Stereophonics - Indian Summer
(90-x(1)-53-45-43-41-30-41-43-70-94-x)
460pts ~ 10wks

179 ~ Lawson - Juliet
(3-13-20-32-52-58-81-x(3)-89-...)
460pts ~ 08wks

178 ~ Matrix & Futurebound - Magnetic Eyes [feat. Baby Blue]
(100-39-30-26-24-26-42-86-89-83-x)
465pts ~ 10wks

177 ~ Jason Mraz - I Won't Give Up
(RE-88-55-x(15)-76-59-x(7)-14-38-34-29-54-92-x)
471pts ~ 10wks

176 ~ Dizzee Rascal - Goin' Crazy [feat. Robbie Williams]
(5-9-20-31-44-51-74-x)
473pts ~ 07wks

After their least successful album campaign to date with 'Keep Calm And Carry On' in 2009, Stereophonics made an unexpectedly successful comeback in 2013 with a top 30 single ('Indian Summer', #180 on this countdown) and a top 3 album 'Graffiti On The Train' which stuck around in the chart most of the year. It's an okay song in my opinion though I preferred 'Innocent' from the previous album. Capital faves Lawson are at #179 with 'Juliet' which had relatively decent longevity for a Lawson single. Their other new top 10 hit of 2013, 'Brokenhearted' (feat. B.o.B), missed the top 200 but #13 peaking 'Learn To Love Again' is still to come. Matrix & Futurebound initially looked like doing nothing with their second hit 'Magnetic Eyes' (feat. Baby Blue) debuting at just #100 but it shot to the top 40 in its second week and took a few more weeks to peak. It's #178 here. They're set to be back in the chart with another first-week-of-the-year release this week. Jason Mraz continued to refuse to give up in 2013 and is at #177 with a song that, despite being even more boring than your average Emeli Sandé song, people continue to keep buying in their thousands every time it's on TV. Finally, Dizzee Rascal is at #176 with his Robbie Williams collaboration 'Goin' Crazy'. I liked the song a lot at the time but in retrospect it's not too great. It didn't do too badly to make the top 5 but you'd have to assume that it would have been a massive #1 had it come out in 2009.

Yay at Stereophonics! Still didn't do anywhere near as good as it should have done but seeing them get a no.30 peak was a chart highlight of the year for me.

'Goin Crazy' deserved to do badly imo. Why did Dizzee think he could release a painfully generic song and get a massive hit? Especially after 'Bassline Junkie' smashing.

A Lana Del Rey track turns out to be my favourite of this section! "Young & Beautiful", taken from the soundtrack to The Great Gatsby, is one of her best for me as it sounds slightly more uplifting compared to her other material though not everyone shares the same affection. Taking a sharp downturn we come to Robbie Williams, one of my least favourite artists in general with a couple of exceptions (stop this hate for "Goin' Crazy"!). "Go Gentle" is the first single taken from #1 album "Swing Both Ways" and edged into the top 10 following a performance on The X Factor. On another listen I've decided this is another exception, oops. "High Hopes", taken from the album "In a Perfect World" and a #1 in Kodaline's native of Ireland, is a nice little ditty and my favourite of the singles released under the name Kodaline (they were 21 Demands until 2011). They do a wonderful version of Disclosure's "Latch" too. Released as the second single from "Brand New Machine", "Count On Me" became a second top 5 for Chase & Status following on from the fantastic "Blind Faith". Despite the higher peak, it didn't stick around as well as the first single, "Lost & Not Found", which is still to come. I wouldn't listen to either out of choice but "Count On Me" is slightly better to my ears. Finishing up a good-not-great section is Canadian Michael Bublé with the lead single from album "To Be Loved". Helped by a performance on Ant & Dec, it became his second top 10 after the not too dissimilar but slightly better "Haven't Met You Yet" but regardless of single performance, his album has gone on to great success.

Carly Rae Jepsen's big hit of 2012 'Call Me Maybe' hangs around at #170 from the end of its chart run running into 2013 a bit. She managed to pull off a surprise third top 40 hit early in 2013 with the rather average 'Tonight I'm Getting Over You' but that does not make the top 200 here. Will this be Carly's final stand in the points chart countdown? There's another 2012 hangover in the form of 'Sweet Nothing' by Calvin Harris feat. Florence Welch at #168, which is the first song to hit the 500 point barrier (exactly). Also hitting exactly 500 points were 2 other songs at #167 and #166 - one of the oldest and one of the newest songs in the rundown respectively. Goo Goo Dolls' 'Iris' has had various chart revivals in the last couple of years due to talent shows but its appeal hasn't worn dry just yet as it still managed to come close to the top 10 once again in 2013 and finishes a respectable 167th for the year. Just ahead of it is Jason Derulo's most recent song 'Trumpets' which has highly questionable lyrics, HIGHLY questionable falsettos and a questionable video to boot, yet somehow avoids being absolutely dreadful. I think. I don't really know where I stand with 'Trumpets'. The public are loving it though and in fact are loving Jason in general quite a lot again these days, the 'Tattoos' era has done rather a lot better than previous album 'Future History'. Just below the 3 500 pointers at #169 is the second of Wiley's 3 appearances, this time as a feature on Conor Maynard's 'Animal'. The 4th (and 2nd post-album) single from Conor's 'Contrast' album, it originally did not feature Wiley's guest rap - that was added on for the single release and it certainly did its job, shooting the song as high as #6, two places higher than previous single 'Turn Around'. Nonetheless, it came and went from the chart quicker than an Emeli Sandé song goes from listenable to suicide-inducing (okay maybe a little slower than that) but left a nice pretty almost symmetrical chart run in its wake [/chartgeek]
