(I do hope I'm not the only one to vote for Animals of Farthing Wood, such a wonderful series <3) |

Oh Farthing Wood is a rather lovely story. I don't think I've seen very much of the animation although I might have, my memory is mixed up with reading the books.
And I was trying to figure out how to make a tactful post about how everyone has far too much 20th century stuff in their lists when we're in a NEW GOLDEN AGE of animation so yes, people need to watch more recent shows, I have like 5 shows from before 2000, everyone has like 45. Nostalgia doesn't work for me because it was so long ago I can remember close to nothing about shows I watched once or twice as a kid, but I can remember a lot about shows I watched in the last 8 (?) years. But I know things like Rick & Morty, Bojack Horseman etc are probably worth giving more of a chance. To practice what I preach I thought I'd have a go at these two at least to check up on the current state of western animation. I'm six into Bojack, three into R&M. Bojack is... mixed so far. I like that it's good satire on the state of celebrity culture and the entertainment world, I loved the 'hating the troops' episode and some of the character interactions. However it's already shown a couple of times that it's willing to do that thing I've become really tired of in western animated comedy where characters go through a life-changing experience in the course of an episode, they hit a reset button and they're back to where they were (basically at the moment Todd is a detriment to the show). The continuity between episodes and comments that it gets better is promising for me continuing though. Rick & Morty, I disliked the first episode, but I'm starting to get it, the other two were great stuff. It might be doing that thing where life-changing + reset button things happen, but I think I'm feeling a little more forgiving in this case as the plots are so over the top. And I'm starting to gel with who the characters are. Now that is actually a perfect reason why I should stick to my '3 episode rule' that I'm trying to keep for any show I pick up. |

Bojack gets better & better the more you watch, the characters become more detailed and story lines are more intriguing whilst still having a layer of comedy. The whole “reset button” is sort of present in S1 but by S4 I’d say that’s completely gone. It goes from being an episode-by-episode animation comedy to having large storyarcs that have a lot to them over the course of many episodes.

This will be open for at least a couple more days until the world cup/the million song contest deadlines aren't looming and I've managed to send reminders to those that have expressed interest but haven't voted. Still not sure results will be very valid unless I get at least close to 20~

Omg Iz keep at Bojack, I was similarly like eh whatever for a few episodes but it gets SO good, particular seasons 3 and 4. It tackling more serious stuff with compromising the tone of the show and making it turgid and depressing is honestly up there with Simpsons.

Ooh yay another Xiaolin Showdown fan *.* me and my brother were so into it when we were kids that we drew our own Shen Gong Wu, cut them out and then pretended to battle each other with them goals x Also your list has highlighted to me that I totally forgot about the existence of Robotboy!

I'm in season 2 of Bojack now and I think I am getting into it, it's starting to become very easy to watch and subverting the things I would have expected it to do. Can definitely see it being perhaps excellent soon.
I hope Jacob will be voting, I've reminded him to look at this. |
