An increase in #1 singles should have meant less were missed out on this volume. However, 6 more UK #1 singles were not included and these were Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake) by Gareth Gates, the debut single from Blazin' Squad Crossroads, P!nk Just Like A Pill, the duet from Pop Idol's Will Young & Gareth Gates The Long And Winding Road, Nelly feat. Kelly Rowland Dilemma (although this would feature on another volume), and another #1 single from Westlife Unbreakable. There were also other noteworthy omissions from the likes of Britney Spears, Shakira, Big Brovaz, Scooter, Holly Valance, Eve, S Club Juniors, Ja Rule and N-Trance to name a few. Remarkably, Now 53 is the only volume to have featured a song by controversial artist Eminem, even though he has featured with both D12 as well as on a hit with Akon, no other singles from Eminem's vast catalogue have made an appearance in the series. Along with him, this was the only volume to feature Las Ketchup, Romeo, ABS, Milk Inc, Jan Wayne, Chad Kroeger, Vanessa Carlton, Badly Drawn Boy, Bowling For Soup, Raven Maize, Who Da Funk and Oakenfold. Artwork Rating: 7/10 Very Good A lovely scenic theme ready for a cold winter ahead. The logo appears to be set on an ice lake with some mountains in the background. I love the simplicity of the design and the cool ambient colours used. Quite beautiful design that really resembles some of the designs used for covers in the mid-90's. Disc 1 Favourite: DJ Sammy & Yanou feat. Do Heaven I know it's a cover version of a Bryan Adams hit, but this dance production, which became a #1 hit single for the DJ, is a very good one, and it's the perfect song to kick off a compilation like this one. One of many good songs to follow from DJ Sammy. Disc 2 Favourite: Chad Kroeger feat. Josey Scott Hero I wouldn't really call any of the tracks in this disc personal favourites, but I've chosen a Spider-Man themed song from Nickelback's Chad Kroeger which is sounding good some 15 years later. It's certainly a step up from Now 52 but there were clearly still label rights politics going on to block many of the tracks on the Hits volumes from appearing on the Now volumes. That said, I like the artwork, I like the variety of genres and I think the end result was the best that could have been made with the limited resources available. And so to the end of the 2002 Nows. I think it goes without saying this was the best of a bad bunch where this particular year's volumes were concerned. Liked the Alpine style artwork too, even if it was Now 32 without the grading. Still some utterly curious choices where tracklist is concerned mind.
I'm perfectly sure they could've pulled Raven Maize or Status Quo off (does anyone really remember those two now?) for an S Club Juniors double appearance, with 'New Direction' joining 'Automatic High' on CD1 or CD2. Likewise, why they didn't put the 'Co-Ed' remix of 'Boys' with Pharrell on as the Britney Spears number on this volume when it was more successful and better remembered than the God awful 'I Love Rock 'n Roll' is a puzzler. I think with hindsight really they had potential to make this a bigger selling volume if they'd resolved the label politics of the time and put more of the earlier number ones of that year on this volume - I'd have put on Elvis vs JXL from your disc 3, the first/second Will and Gareth chart toppers, the debuts from Shakira, Holly Valance etc. If you added those on that would almost certainly have been a two million seller to rival Now 44 right there. My top 5 as always: CD1 1. Sugababes (I didn't get their 'Angels with Dirty Faces' album till that Christmas but as I touched on last week 'Freak Like Me' and this converted me into a full time fan of theirs. Also the first appearance proper for Brian Higgins and Xenomania on a Now!) 2. Busted (this was such a breath of fresh air to the world of pop and boybands back then and even now stands out. Cheeky, naughty and ever so catchy - a brilliant debut single, even better to come from them in future weeks) 3. Darius (I always found it amusing that this was sat at number one at the precise moment Hear'Say were on the verge of a split, given he was the target for ridicule on the first Popstars. But in all truth he never bested this. Great single mind) 4. Kylie Minogue (and so endeth the 'Fever' era, but what a way to end. Brilliant video again, by Michel Gondry who did 'Star Guitar' for the Chemical Brothers on Now 51. Just utterly delightful and brilliant. The Fischerspooner mix she promoted this single with, however, I didn't care much for then or now) 5. Jakatta featuring Seal (one of my favourite dance records that year. And any DJ that is able to bring Seal back to the UK top 10 is more than OK by me) CD2 1. Appleton (blistering start to their - frustratingly brief - post All Saints duo career. Like the holy meeting point between their former band and first album era Natalie Imbruglia. Robbed of number one I feel, even if they were nowhere near to achieving it, they had the lowest sales for a #2 single that year I believe) 2. Coldplay (I got 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' for my 13th birthday that year and played it to death. Still one of my all time favourite albums although my overall favourite from it didn't make it onto this Now) 3. Vanessa Carlton (classic one hit wonder. Was to the summer of 2002 what Daniel Powter's 'Bad Day' was to three summers later!) 4. Oasis (one of the best singles they did in the later years of their career. Noel sounded brilliant on this) 5. U2 (one of the few singles of U2's I liked in their early-mid 00s renaissance period. Largely because William Orbit produced it) TBH Andrew you chose pretty much everything I'd have gone for on disc 3 so no complaints there. The only ones I can think of that would've also been good shouts for disc 3: - Shakira - Underneath Your Clothes - Madonna - Die Another Day - Beyoncι - Work It Out - Truth Hurts and Rakim - Addictive - David Gray - Dead in the Water - Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Zephyr Song - Coldplay - The Scientist (my favourite of theirs I was referring to earlier) This post has been edited by ThePensmith: Aug 7 2017, 02:53 PM |

I've always loved the fact that this edition kicks off with three Spanish artists *.* But I was particularly overjoyed to see DJ Sammy leading the album, as I'd been championing Heaven to do well since I got hold of it on import in the summer. I didn't expect it to be quite as huge as it was!
I really adore Disc 1 (on which I voted for Heaven of course), it's fantastic and reminds me of the start of my last year at high school, which I was coming into at this point. Disc 2 is less brilliant and surprisingly my favourite is also Hero by Chad Kroeger - the only listenable thing he's ever done, but it's quite a tune. It would be quicker to list the songs I don't care for on Disc 1 as so many are amazing, and they are: Love To See You Cry, What You Got, I Love Rock & Roll, I'm Right Here and My Vision. Really like or love everything else, granted a lot of them for nostalgic appeal. That run of dance hits from Sophie Ellis-Bextor to Lasgo is <333 So much good clubland stuff around at this time. Disc 2 was indeed interesting for the inclusion of Eminem, I wonder how on earth they got that? A couple of his songs appeared on Top Of The Pops compilations a couple of years before that, namely The Real Slim Shady and The Way I Am, so they must have been available somehow at times. Fantasy, A Thousand Miles, In My Place and to a lesser extent Little By Little and Starry Eyed Surprise are the only other songs I care for on that disc. Of the exclusions, as noted many were down to the longstanding licensing problems, but a few mentioned I do believe they could have got hold of (due to appearing on the Smash Hits compilations at the time) and some made for odd ommisions, and those were: Charli Baltimore feat. Ja Rule, Ashanti & Vita – Down 4 U Ja Rule feat. Case – Livin' It Up Britney Spears – Boys ATC – Around The World (La La La La La) N-Trance – Forever Scooter – Nessaja Hear'Say – Lovin' Is Easy S Club Juniors – New Direction I suppose they didn't want it to be too focused on any particular genre but I think the inclusion of some of these over the four songs before Oakenfold at the end of Disc 2 would have made for a more complete listen. If push came to shove they could have ditched Heart of Gold (as much as I love it) for Llorenna's other vocal on Forever, and Posse for Nessaja, a far bigger hit. This is honestly the worst one of these I've seen to date, I struggled to find any songs I wanted to vote for but eventually Round Round and A Thousand Miles saved me. Pretty much everything else I would never listen to out of choice.

A few good tracks on this volume Coldplay, Oasis, Eminem, DJ Sammy to name a few.
Lasgo's 'Alone' would of been another great track to include on the disc 3. It went Top 10 in August 2002, but they went for the next single 'Prey' on Now 53, which I was gutted about at the time because I preferred 'Alone' to 'Prey'. A strange track 3 again on Disc 1 following George Michael last edition, with Enrique only peaking at #12! Otherwise Disc 1 is really strong. *.* Can't quite say the same about Disc 2 as it's full of filler again. My Disc 1 favourite this time is 'Aserejι (The Ketchup Song)', I cannot resist this euphoric bit of Spanglish novelty.
 Forever a school disco staple. My Disc 2 favourite is Oasis - 'Little By Little', I really love the way the song builds with Noel's voice becoming gradually more passionate from the bridge to the chorus. He sounds great here!

Picked Lasgo - Pray for Disc 1 and Chad Kroeger and Josey Scott - Hero for Disc 2. No! at these three being excluded from the album. Well, obviously it goes without saying that Darius was/and always will be my favourite.
