BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Kylie vs. Little Mix album chart battle

Posted by: Liam.k. 16th September 2020, 07:02 PM

Little Mix have just announced they'll be releasing their sixth album Confetti on November 6th - same date as Kylie's fifteenth. Who will come out on top?

Posted by: Liam.k. 16th September 2020, 07:03 PM

Copying my post from the Little Mix forum:

QUOTE(Liam.k. @ Sep 16 2020, 08:01 PM) *
I feel like Little Mix have more of an uphill climb after LM5 wasn't too well-received whereas Kylie has a lot of good-will behind following the success of Golden and then Glastonbury. As mentioned on the previous page too, Kylie's last album was only 10k behind the first week sales of Little Mix's despite being released in April compared to November - now Kylie has the benefit of the Christmas market too.

I don't think it's a clear-cut win by any means, I can certainly see the benefits for Little Mix this time around that they didn't have last time. I'm siding more with Kylie at the moment though.

+ Kylie having a two month pre-order advantage over Little Mix too.

It will probably come down to which artist is more desperate to get it by how many different formats they’ll release

Posted by: Bjork 16th September 2020, 07:13 PM

sure Kylie will have 10 different cassette versions that all her loyal fans will buy
as seen with her last GH

I'd say Kylie's cassette sales alone could beat LM wink.gif

Posted by: davidas 16th September 2020, 07:17 PM

I think Kylie will clinch it. She’s an album artist and has managed to easily get the #1 album for her last few, whereas little mix are singles artists and have struggled to secure many #1 albums

Looks like only 1 cassette version so far from Kylie. Plenty of time to add more though.

Posted by: Bré 16th September 2020, 07:43 PM

As I posted elsewhere I think Kylie will win this pretty easily, depending on the competition I wouldn't be surprised if LM don't even get #2.

Posted by: vibe 16th September 2020, 07:45 PM

Little mix will have Saturday night promotion on their show.

If multiple formats they could win .

Posted by: jlj 16th September 2020, 07:49 PM

Little Mix will have a streaming advantage too. But atm I think Kylie has the overall advantage.

Sales wise what did their last albums debut with? I know Kylie got the #1 and LM didn’t but Little Mix usually debut with strong sales and are quite unlucky to have had more #1 albums than what they’ve had.

Posted by: Liam.k. 16th September 2020, 07:52 PM

48,032 for Kylie's Golden; 56,841 for Little Mix's LM5.

Posted by: Tafty 16th September 2020, 08:15 PM

I think my numbers may be a little high, but I'm gonna say

60k-65k for Kylie
35k-40k for Little Mix

I think LM could hold up better depending on how well their reality show does (during the lives, they're rumoured to be performing something every week ofc - whether it's older stuff or exclusive new stuff wdk)

Plus Kylie will release more formats, I think. As well as I assume she'll be able to get promo throughout the entire week (her team are always BANG ON with promo slots and going all out)

I'm kinda hoping it'll be a 5SOS/Dua kinda battle where they try and one-up each other through the week, but I don't think it'll be close enough for LM to bother with doing that aha (assuming LM would have to do it first, for Kylie to counteract etc..)

EDIT: Who else is releasing that week?

Posted by: jlj 16th September 2020, 08:18 PM

If Kylie does 60K that would be the highest first week sales of the year so far I think thats a bit high.

I think both acts we’ll sell between 35 - 45K.

Heading into Q4, with 4+ months of pre-orders (not as much as 5/6 months as I originally thought though oops) and like I said, I'll be very surprised if she doesn't add more bundles and/or have heavy promotion that week (the situation on Corona providing ofc - if it's to remain as it is, I can see her doing all the morning shows and whatever evening shows are shown during the time)

Posted by: troylovesmusic 16th September 2020, 08:32 PM

I think Little Mix personally . They will have there singing show on around the same time which will be good promo weekly and also they will likely do better on streaming.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 16th September 2020, 08:32 PM

I have every confidence Kylie can get this!

Posted by: IANMUSIC24 16th September 2020, 08:33 PM

Little mix for sure

Posted by: slowdown73 16th September 2020, 08:36 PM

I think Kylie will do it.

Posted by: Nick Jonas 16th September 2020, 08:43 PM

Little Mix have released the better singles so far. Kylie needs to pull something out of the bag for single #2, either way I can’t see this doing as well as Golden.

Posted by: 777666jason 16th September 2020, 08:51 PM

Ordinarily I'd say kylie, but LM have the advantage of being all over TV between now and then with their show so with a plug or 3

Posted by: SmileyKylie 16th September 2020, 09:19 PM

Think LM but Kylie is capable of grabbing sales and can do reductions and promo that will attract fans.

If I was Kylie I would so a picture disc Vinyl and another cassette

Also Kylie has also done A Say Something vinyl + download Disco album combo so could do the same with single 2.

BMG said Disco pre orders from both her own website and Amazon are ahead of Golden

What promo does Kylie have in store? Surely that week she will do G Norton, Strictly? The One Show? Could she have her own TV Special?

BMG are happy so far https://www.musicweek.com/labels/read/can-kylie-minogue-crack-the-us-with-her-disco-album/080856

Posted by: 365 16th September 2020, 11:12 PM

I think I'd usually have said based off their last two albums that Kylie had it in the bag. However, BBC's The Search is going to make it a bit closer, as well as the fact Little Mix (presumably) will have had 3 hits off the album this time rather than one. I'm going to wait to see how many physical bundles and variants Little Mix have on Friday before voting.

An exciting battle though - it could end up being very close.

Posted by: Zak 16th September 2020, 11:40 PM

I'm remembering LM5 was number 3 with over 50k sales? If there is competition like that again then I don't see either of them going #1. I'm predicting 40k for Kylie and 50k for LM but the performance of the third single will be important for LM.

Posted by: jlj 17th September 2020, 12:20 AM

Little Mix’s next single is crucial. They could be in with a shot if the next single they release is an instant smash and if promo is strong.

Kylie’s album will sell regardless in week one but hopefully she has a killer second single too what can at least have a “Dancing” style run.

At the minute I’m thinking Kylie but she does have the advantage for the time being.

What’s more interesting as well is what album will hold up better in week 2?

Posted by: ...ready for it 17th September 2020, 02:22 AM

Kylie.

Posted by: Dobbo 17th September 2020, 05:01 AM

big win for Little Mix

Posted by: iain 17th September 2020, 08:11 AM

It will be close though it always seems that when Kylie is “expected” to do well she never really does. Like Body Language semi-flopped at no 6 after Fever was a global phenomenon, X underperformed when there was such immense goodwill and hype for her comeback and Kiss Me Once flopped during her stint on the Voice.

She seems to perform best when she’s the underdog, like for Golden and Light Years.

Posted by: 365 17th September 2020, 08:32 AM

Kylie has sold 15k in pre-orders at the moment which is very strong. However, most of an artists' pre-orders come in the first week. (In comparison Steps have done 8k)

Posted by: Rob 17th September 2020, 08:49 AM

Probably Kylie due to the amount of formats she'll have.

It's worth noting Little Mix probably won't be allowed perform or plug the album on The Search given BBC's restrictions.

Posted by: shindymindy 17th September 2020, 09:03 AM

I think LM may be able to get it over Kylie.

I don't think they can plug the album but they can defo perform their songs on the show as Jesy confirmed that they were performing on every show.

Posted by: 365 17th September 2020, 09:35 AM

I might end up being way off, but I think The Search is going to do a lot of heavy lifting for Little Mix- I think they probably need a bit of a refresh in the public eyes, so it's coming at the perfect time.

Even if the show doesn't get huge 5+ million a show ratings, the time slot is big enough in itself so it'll be pulling in a couple of million regardless. Even before they get to the live shows where they'll be performing, the series is basically going to be a weekly prime time advertisement for them as a band, as personalities and their success in the industry (Given the show's blueprint is basically finding the next Little Mix). It's going to be like having one of those one off BBC specials that Adele/Ariana etc have had, but like instead being on every weekend during Q4.

Posted by: dj_tim_e 17th September 2020, 09:54 AM

I think Kylie will score the number 1 but little mix will have better longevity and "sales" overall.

Posted by: iain 17th September 2020, 10:10 AM

It’s a bit frustrating that Kylie could have been no 1 in the last couple of weeks (and the next few weeks looking at the release schedule bar any surprise releases) pretty much on those presales alone, but she may have to settle for no 2 or lower in November. I guess they’re more interested in total sales leading up to Christmas.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 17th September 2020, 10:13 AM

The other #1s after Kylie or LM will likely be McFly, Gary Barlow (release not confirmed yet but it'll likely be Nov 20th) and Steps.

Posted by: Bré 17th September 2020, 10:40 AM

McFly haven't had a #1 album since 2005 and their last album peaked at #20, I'd be pretty shocked if their new album got to #1? The singles haven't exactly generated much interest.

As it’s on the BBC they can’t be seen to overly promote one artist. Just the same when Let It Shine was looking for the next Take That. It didn’t have Take That on apart from I think one performance and it was a classic not a new single from their album at the time. The show will help the album slightly but not much. Wouldn’t be surprised if Kylie pops up for a performance during the final or something.

Yeah, as much as I'd love McFly to get another #1 album, I'd have to agree with this.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 17th September 2020, 11:52 AM

I suppose it's quite hard to predict McFly's sales given it's 10 years since their last. But they sold out their tour extremely quickly, and Busted's second album since their reunion sold 17k. So I think this could push for 25k+,

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 17th September 2020, 11:58 AM

I think Kylie will do it easily to be honest, however I would love it to be Little Mix!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 17th September 2020, 03:22 PM

I hate that both are clashing as id be happy for both to have a week at number 1 but i want the number 1 more for Kylie. I think kylie will open on higher numbers but Little mix will sell more long term.

Posted by: Crazy Chris 17th September 2020, 03:52 PM

Kylie will prevail

Posted by: caseclosed 17th September 2020, 05:07 PM

I believe the girls won't have a deluxe version which might hinder them.

Posted by: tgl92 17th September 2020, 05:10 PM

I think they’ll both do about 40-45k. Will be close.

Look at sales not chart positions
From memory I think Body Language did ca. 70,000 on week 1 and X did ca. 85K, so not really flops

Posted by: Bjork 17th September 2020, 06:49 PM

did a quick search for their first week sales for comparison:

Body Language 69K
Ultimate Kylie 82K (116K in week 3 and 131K in week 4)
X 82K
Aphrodite 79K
Kiss me once 29K
Golden 48K
Step back in time 32K

DNA 53K
Salute 35K
Get weird 60K
Glory Days 96K
LM5 56K

Posted by: Better Man 17th September 2020, 07:26 PM

Kylie anyway

Posted by: slowdown73 17th September 2020, 11:31 PM

Little Mix will sell more in the long run but I think Kylie could do very well first week and even sell about 60k or more.

Posted by: miichaelking21 18th September 2020, 08:38 AM

Little Mix are doing individual cassette and vinyl covers... could be an even tighter race

Posted by: 365 18th September 2020, 09:03 AM

Yeah Little Mix have more album variations than ever before (By a mile). It's definitely not set in stone yet.

Posted by: shindymindy 18th September 2020, 10:00 AM

Some of LMs versions are sold out already on their website
Interesting chart battle on the way

Posted by: SmileyKylie 18th September 2020, 02:03 PM

Smaller amounts made of cassettes? More purchases from an international base? Who knows.

Kylie is selling a vinyl single for £13 she isn't going to short of money haha

It's the signed versions that are sold out, as those are never unlimited. It's probably limited to around 4k signed albums as it takes ages for the artists. They'll probably put up more on release week though.

X sold 82k in its first week and over 450k overall. It was far from a flop in the UK. Body Language has sold nearly 400k. Peak positions aren't the be-all and end-all.

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 18th September 2020, 05:19 PM

I would really love Little Mix to get another #1 on release week but still think Kylie will smash it.

I'm hoping The Search helps sales of the album for Little Mix though and it does better than LM5 (Not that LM5 was a flop but definitely was a messy time with leaving Syco etc)

Posted by: Lukuzz 18th September 2020, 05:55 PM

I think Little Mix, only just though. I'd normally say Kylie easily but LM have put plenty of different versions out for sale too (plus I think they may even add more on at a later date) plus the promo of the show on BBC, they have more support from radio, and more promo probably available to them. Still think Kylie will do really well too

We’re looking at these numbers through a 2020 lens when these would be huge numbers, both first week and total sales. The fact that X came in at no. 4 behind Shayne Ward‘s second album, of all people is really telling. It was billed as the biggest comeback of the year and spent 2 weeks in the top 10. Similarly, Body Language spent one week in the top 10 following the massive success of Fever (which spent 20 weeks in the top 10). Neither were huge flops, but they definitely underperformed compared to what people were expecting.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 18th September 2020, 07:42 PM

I would say X and Body Language Kylie was defo still singles artists foremost then albums artist. Now she is very much albums artists in a different stage of her career

I think BMG will monitor closely and have things ready to release.... Being an Xmas market they may already have special cassette, vinyl, CDs for end of Nov, beginning of Dec that they could release during first week also.

Number 1 is not be all and end for Kylie. She could easily release a new version end of January and top charts again on a low sales week so all is not lost ..

With new bundles for Kylie she risks people cancelling their originals and buying a new bundle so what ever she releases extra has to be separate items like a picture disc or a Cassette collection

Posted by: Dark Horse 18th September 2020, 10:00 PM

i’m the biggest Kylie fan in the world but it seems like Little Mix has it in the bag theres no competition...Kylie will get another number 2 album... she should move back or forward her release date in order to stand a chance...

Body Language basically ended Kylie’s international career... the singles were only successful in the UK and to a lesser extent Australia...

Kylie and she won’t need to reduce to £4.99 or sign a million copies to achieve it - queen of loyal stans and physicals.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 19th September 2020, 05:07 AM

Looks like lockdown will have started for 2 weeks end of October in UK so who knows what will be open, closed in terms of shops.

Streaming wise Little Mix will do well if we are all at home.

If I were Kylie I would do another Amazon exclusive as they did well with deliveries throughout lockdown lol

Posted by: shindymindy 19th September 2020, 07:09 AM

LM at number 1 on iTunes preorder

Edit: and in at 45 on Amazon bestsellers

Posted by: GTH 19th September 2020, 07:21 AM

Kylie’s team will go all out with release week to get the top spot, with multiple versions and collectors editions etc. I don’t think little mix have the album buying fan base currently to beat that. Little Mux will probably be the bigger ‘seller’ in the long run though thanks to streaming.

Posted by: Bjork 19th September 2020, 07:31 AM

Amazed you all think little Mix are a streaming force
Sure Kylie will do little on streaming but probably L Mix too
They do well enough on streaming cos the label pays to have their songs on playlists and people passively stream them
but don't expect the Little3 Mix album tracks to spend months in the Spotify top 40 like Taylor or Pop Smoke

Little mix just put up cassette bundles, vinyls with each member face which hardcore mixers will probably buy all 4

Posted by: SmileyKylie 19th September 2020, 10:03 AM

Funnily enough I would rather Kylie get two number 39 singles than the number 1 album. Haha

A chart battle is always good for sales so if Kylie can best the 48k she got for Golden then that's good enough for me.

I think Little Mix got nearly 10k album streams in first week and Kylie nearly 2k hence why people will think that wi happen this time too
In opening week.

Too many people put too much emphasis on pre orders. It will be on the week sales/streams that decide it

Posted by: Gerald 19th September 2020, 10:53 PM

Voted for Kylie but I would love it if Little Mix somehow got the #1 album. They are going to dominate prime time television with The Search so that should help them. Exciting race nevertheless!!!

LMAO and you think Little Mix's stingy ass label will do it? It took them 5 weeks to discount Holiday and 7 (?) For BUS! tongue.gif

TBH depending on how close it is, I can def see a one up-man ship happening like what happened with Dua vs 5SOS. Whoever is trailing will dcount/add signed albums for cheap first, then the other will counteract for their fanbase etc..

And it'll all be for nothing coz there will be a surprise re-re-release of Lewis Capaldi's album that'll storm it's way to number 1 with over 150k (or something :') )

I hope Kylie takes the crown but lockdown could have a big impact on her physical sales. Kylie is more reliant on physical sales due to low streaming. If we’re subject to a tight lockdown and shop closures, her sales could be affected quite drastically.

Posted by: 365 20th September 2020, 11:46 AM

Little Mix did 7.1k pre-orders in first day apparently. The HMV exclusive and all the signed bundles all sold out though so that will be by far their biggest day or pre-orders.

Little mix just put up cassette bundles, vinyls with each member face which hardcore mixers will probably buy all 4

It's worth noting that it costs a lot to buy these Little Mix individual member formats:

Picture Disc x4
= £100.80
(£90 items + £10.80 postage)

Cassettes x4
= £42.90
(£36 items + £6.90 postage)

Picture Disc x4 + Cassettes x4
= £142.99
(£126 items + £16.99 postage)

I feel like it'll be the case that most Little Mix fans will have to settle for choosing their favourite member. Also, a lot of fans may prioritise tour tickets over buying loads of formats.

Even individually they're not exactly cheap, £31.90 per picture disc / £13.25 per cassette (with postage).

On the other hand, I get the impression that more of Kylie's fanbase will have an obsession with buying different formats, and have the disposable income to be able to do it (they've certainly proved that with her previous releases). Kylie's not touring, so that's some money saved for her fanbase to buy formats.

Posted by: Calum 20th September 2020, 04:25 PM

Yeah the prices for the Little Mix bundles (and even individually) are ridiculous, so hopefully that's something that'll work in Kylie's favour. Not having to decide between those and tour tickets will be a relief too.

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 20th September 2020, 04:46 PM

Little Mix will have a broader appeal though, so better on Streaming and coming off the back of a high profile TV show.

I still think it’s all to play for to be honest.

Posted by: shindymindy 21st September 2020, 09:52 PM

LM have added exclusive signed CDs for £10 on Amazon.
That’s going to get them a good few extra sales as it’s a great price

Posted by: 365 22nd September 2020, 11:20 AM

I think there was only 1000 of them and they've sold out now. Little Mix must be on around 10k pre-orders now.

Posted by: Seinfeld 22nd September 2020, 11:40 AM

I’ll be very surprised if Little Mix beat Kylie to #1 tbh. Surely they would have been better off releasing a week or two earlier?

I don’t think this is quite like Blur vs Oasis though biggrin.gif

Good publicity for both.

BMG will probably be happier with sales. Let's see what Magic sounds like on Thursday

That article is hilarious!

"Kylie Minogue has teased the biggest chart battle in 25 years"
"Kylie admits the race to No1 will be as nail-biting as Blur and Oasis' famous clash"

I wouldn't expect anything less from The Sun though!

A Top 2 with Kylie and Little Mix would be fantastic for women of pop regardless of who will come out on top, and a top 2 of my two favorite currently active acts would look amazing.

November 6th is now a 3 way battle between Little Mix, Kylie and Paloma Faith.
