For a hell of a long time I've never seen the fuss with Elbow. Just an alright band who make decent music but it's generally a bit samey and boring with the odd cracking tune ('New Born', 'Forget Myself', 'Asleep In The Back'). I didn't think they'd ever be a band I'd buy an album by, let alone enjoy. They released lead single 'Grounds for Divorce' and nothing much had changed. It was a decent enough tune, but I didn't feel it was great. Then I heard 'One Day Like This'....

It completely won me over, my opinion took a U-turn. It was brilliant, it was emotional, it was epic, it left me wanting more. I downloaded it instantly and 29 weeks later it's still in my Personal Chart. I doubt there's ever been a track I've listened to more than that, every single day this summer, to and from work. And it never once got even slightly annoying/boring/dull etc. I bought 'The Seldom Seen Kid' soon after and was reasonably impressed, though really I just felt it was a bit like Elbow of old; decent enough, a bit samey with some decent enough tunes ('Weather To Fly', 'Grounds for Divorce', 'One Day Like This'). However the more I listened, the more it grew on me, the more I realised it was about as close to perfect as it's possible to be.

The lyrics, the melodies, Guy's ever so soothing voice, the way it flows. Whenever I listen to it I get captured in the most wonderful place and I feel like I want to melt. The opener 'Starlings', not particularly attention-grabbing at first, but is a beautiful song. The pace is upped with the anthem 'The Bones of You' before back to the mellow 'Mirrorball', one of the most gorgeous songs I've ever heard. 'Grounds for Divorce' is next and it works so much better on the album, a stomping, ballsy, sing-a-long anthem which couldn't have been placed anywhere better. 'An Audience With The Pope' is the only song I've not fallen in love with and the only song I could even consider to let the album down, I'd only rate that at about 8/10!

It soon picks up though with 'Weather to Fly', the song which I found most instant. The lyrics, the simple instrumentation, the backing 'aah's that are constant throughout, it's still probably my favourite track after 'One Day Like This'. 'Loneliness of a Towe Crane Driver' gives me goosebumps, 'The Fix' is excellent too, the added vocal of Richard Hawley (superb in his own right) adds so much to the song, 'Some Riot' is as lovely as they come and then it comes to 'One Day Like This', surely the best album closer since about 'Champagne Supernova'? But hold on, there's more. 'Friend of Ours' closes, written as a tribute to Bryan Glancy, a friend of the band who died in 2006. He is The Seldom Seen Kid. It's stunning, it really is. As Guy sings the double 'love you mate' a tear is brought to my eye, not something that ever happens if I'm honest. For a hell of a long time I've said Interpol's 'Turn on the Bright Lights' is my favourite album of all time. If that was released this year I'm not even sure it would be number one. If I don't go off this album in 2009 then I think I will regard it as my favourite ever.

Before I start my singles here are the five WORST acts of the year!

05 Katy Perry

I do feel she should be higher than this but because I love 'Hot N Cold' it saves her a bit. Still, 'I Kissed A Girl', 'Ur So Gay' and 'Self Inflicted' are beyond vile!

04 Madonna

Oh how the mighty have fallen. I can't say I'm a fan but I do usually like her. Not this year though, everything I heard off her album is utter drivel.

03 Kaiser Chiefs

To think I once liked them. mellow.gif The most generic of generic indie...

02 The Jonas Brothers

They're surely a joke?! They make McFly's recent outpurt seem fantastic..

01 Alphabeat

puke.gif puke.gif puke.gif To think I liked 'Fascination'! :| It was only for about 10 days though, I soon realised it was embarassing, cheesy nonsence, they really are awful. Them being dropped/not re-signed in the UK proves there is a music God!

180 Innerpartysystem 'Die Tonight, Live Forever' (18)
179 MGMT 'Electric Feel' (13)
178 The Rascals 'Suspicious Wit' (14)
177 Jenny Lewis 'Carpetbaggers' (13)
176 Lenka 'The Show' (15)
175 James 'Whiteboy' (06)
174 Kelly Rowland 'Work' [Freemasons Remix] (19)
173 Sigur Ros 'Inní Mér Syngur Vitleysingur' (28)
172 Duffy 'Mercy' (03)
171 Howling Bells 'Into The Chaos' (17)

Even though they made the album that finished bottom in my albums list MGMT make their first of three appearances. The other two won't be for a while yet... Duffy and James peaked fairly highly, James got boring reasonably quickly, 'Mercy' has ust got a bit more annoying as the year's gone on. Howling Bells comeback good but a bit disappointing in comparison to stuff off 'Howling Bells' Hope the album is better.

170 Islands 'The Arm' (39)
169 Glasvegas 'Please Come Back Home' (23)
168 The Hold Steady 'Stay Positive' (24*)
167 Eric Prydz 'Pjanoo' (25)
166 The Little Ones 'Ordinary Song' (16)
165 Shout Out Louds 'Tonight I Have To Leave It' [Kleerup Remix] (09)
164 Like A Thief 'The Hours We Kept (While You Were Sleeping) (08)
163 Roots Manuva 'Over and Over' (17)
162 Benga & Coki 'Night' (29)
161 Those Dancing Days 'Home Sweet Home' (10)

Slightly more unknown bunch than the last 10, only Eric Prydz having any sort of mainstream impact. 'Ordinary Song' is a great example of why I love doing End of Year charts, a song from the beginning of the year that I hadn't listened to for ages that I re-find love for!

160 Sneaky Sound System 'UFO' (08)
159 The View '5 Rebecca's' (11)
158 Guillemots 'Get Over It' (03)
157 British Sea Power 'Waving Flags' (05)
156 The Mae Shi 'Run To Your Grave' (22)
155 The Fratellis 'Mistress Mabel' (05)
154 Fujiya & Miyagi 'Knickerbocker' (13)
153 Ting Tings 'Great DJ' (12)
152 Supergrass 'Diamond Hoo Ha Man' (29)
151 Lykke Li 'Breaking It Up' (33)

A vastly improved View (although it didn't stay great for long), an under-par Guillemots, underperforming Lykke Li and Supergrass and the first of three entries for both Lykke and Ting Tings.

148 Ting Tings 'Be The One' (07)

146 Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip 'Look For The Woman' (13)
145 Vampire Weekend 'Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa' (12)

143 Santogold 'Lights Out (12)
142 Mystery Jets 'Half In Love With Elizabeth' (22)
141 The Killers 'Human' (10)

And the second entries for Lykke and Ting Tings quickly follow. This time there's the first of three entries for Mystery Jets, Santogold, Vampire Weekend and Scroobius Pip, who's still to chart once more with Dan le Sac and once with Yila.

130 The Wombats 'Moving To New York' (11)
129 The Fratellis 'A Heady Tale' (19*)
128 Blood Red Shoes 'This Is Not For You' (07)
127 Death Cab For Cutie 'Cath...' (21)
126 H 'Two' O 'What's It Gonna Be?' (16)
125 Muscles 'Ice Cream' (04)
124 The Kills 'U.R.A. Fever' (03)
123 The Long Blondes 'The Couples' (06)
122 Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip 'Letter From God To Man' (20)
121 The Faint 'The Geeks Were Right' (10)

Getting towards the songs I really love now... The Kills was a top 3 hit from earlier in the year which I don't love quite so much now, H 'Two' O a song which is pretty $h!te however as much as I tried not to I really like. Infectious.

120 Sam Sparro 'Black and Gold' (34)
119 Yila ft Scroobius Pip 'Astronaut' (22)
118 Lightspeed Champion 'Galaxy of the Lost' (27)
117 Fischerspooner 'The Best Revenge' [Alex Gopher Retaliation Remix] (12)
116 Duke Spirit 'The Step And The Walk' (04)
115 Born Ruffians 'Humming Bird' (08)
114 Los Campesinos! 'Death To Los Campesinos!' (03)
113 Mujava 'Township Funk' (28)
112 Coldplay ft Jay Z 'Lost' (09*)
111 Frankmusik '3 Little Words' (08)

I never appreciated 'Black and Gold' at all when it was first out, however I grew to love it and gave it one solitary week in my chart at 34 in August. Born Ruffians chart with the song off the Orange ad, Los Campesinos! is another #3 single to miss the top 100, Mujava I somehow managed to massively underappreciate in my chart and a first of three appearances for Coldplay.

110 The Chemical Brothers 'Midnight Madness' (19)
109 Metallica 'The Day That Never Comes' (13)
108 Ida Maria 'Queen of the World' (06)
107 The Raveonettes 'You Want The Candy' (22)
106 The Shortwave Set 'Glitches N Bugs' (14*)
105 Tokyo Police Club 'In A Cave' (22)
104 Robyn 'Who's That Girl?' (02)
103 The Spinto Band 'Summer Grof' (16)
102 Oasis 'Falling Down' [Chemical Brothers Remix] (23)
101 Fight Like Apes 'Jake Summers' (04)

The Chemical Brothers, one of my favourite acts of all time, make both their appearences in this 10. Metallica do well with a very good effort for them, Ida Maria turned out to be a disappointment, Robyn narrowly misses out on four top 100 appearences and Fight Like Apes are the unlukiest, coming in at 101.

100 Poppy & The Jezebels 'UFO' [P.S. Remix] (37-22-17-15-13-17-19-28-39)

A completely random download from late summer, I quite like the original but I like the P.S. remix quite a bit more. A decent feel good, female-fronted pop tune.

099 Dodos 'Red And Purple' (39-33-16-09-06-06-10-15-23-35-40)

Their first of three appearences in the top 100, not bad for a band I'd never heard of until June. I find that each single seems to get better and their album 'Visiter' is right at the top of my must purchase list.

098 The Futureheads 'Radio Heart' (25-20-16-16-09-05-03-05-06-12-16-18-28-37)

Their first of four top 100 appearences. I wasn't sure on this when I first heard it however after buying their album it did grow on me although I have tired a little. Still a good song though, just no to the standard of their other three singles and a lot of the album.

097 Roots Manuva 'Let The Spirit' (35-29-23-19-17-14-12-16-23*)

I've always thought that Roots Manuva was a very good rapper, I just knew very little by him. I've listened a bit more this year though, and his album does seem pretty good. Both singles were excellent, this recent one being the better of the two.

096 Noah & The Whale '2 Bodies, 1 Heart' (17-07-04-02-05-10-23-37)

I surprised myself when I didn't buy their album as I really liked their three singles, I just couldn't see their album being any good. It's done almost nothing commercially and I've barely seen anyone mention it since its release. I do still quite like their singles, although not as much as when they were first out. I think they're a much better summer band.

095 Rihanna 'Disturbia' (20-11-08-05-05-05-08-14-20-24-22-30)

When I first downloaded this in May I really loved it however I now feel I'm one of many to have suffered from Rihanna Overload. It's still great, I've just bored of it a bit. You still hear it out so much as well which doesn't help.

094 Sons & Daughters 'Darling' (29-22-13-05-03-03-06-08-15-24-33)

Following up 2007's excellent 'Gilt Complex' this wwas one of my early favourites of the year. Other stuff I heard wasn't so good however I still like them more than I did in their earlier era's, although 'Dance Me In' still remains my favourite of theirs.

093 Friendly Fires 'Paris' (21-15-18-27-31-39-40*)

I really have under-charted this, and I don't know why as it's only very recent. I've always liked it more than a #15 although there are much better on their album.

092 Hot Chip 'Ready For The Floor' (35-20-09-15-22-29)

I didn't really like this as much as I thought I would do considering the hype and their previous material. I tried to but a 6 week chart run wasn't particularly good. It has grown on me though, but it's still not as good as the 'The Warning' singles.

091 Noah & The Whale '5 Years Time' (30-24-13-01-03-04-10-21-28)

The first of 19 number ones to appear then, it's also the one that spent the shortest time on my chart. I adored this for about a fortnight but soon realised it wasn't really worthy of number one status. Still a great song though.

199 Ani Lorak 'Shady Lady' (22)

Pleased to see this make an appearance! Liking the worst list as well... always thought Alphabeat were a bit too cheesy for the UK market and was pretty surprised they actually did crack it! Do love Boyfriend though I have to admit!
