BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Songs From The Kitсhen Disco

Posted by: lewistgreen 15th July 2020, 12:26 PM

Sophie's disco has been a huge success online during lockdown, even nabbing her a one-off Radio 2 show in May too. Now, she's announced a 2021 tour and an album to go with it! Described as a hits collection with some covers thrown in too, the album will also have a brand new single included with it to be announced soon.

That's not a song by her, are you sure you've got the right person? unsure.gif

I thought everyone knew 'Murder On The Dancefloor' at the very least!

Oops I meant Wild Forever laugh.gif what a banger that is

I've never actually heard Murder before! Just looked it up, and I don't recognise it.

God I feel old

As if there are people that don't know 'Murder on the Dancefloor.' Sophie coming for longevity.

Posted by: Liam.k. 15th July 2020, 05:26 PM

'Murder on the Dancefloor' seems to have randomly become relevant again with people around my age too (I guess music comes back around every 20 years or so) so it's surprisingly to think you've missed it completely! Surely you'll have heard 'Groovejet'?

'Groovejet' is one of the most overrated songs ever. I have never and will never understand why that's rated so much! drama.gif

'Murder On The Dancefloor', 'Bittersweet' & 'Catch You' are my fave SE-B tracks wub.gif

Posted by: Rob S 15th July 2020, 09:13 PM

'Murder On The Dancefloor' is magnificent and I love the video as well. The nostalgia <3 'Music Gets The Best of Me' is fab as well. Read My Lips in general is strong quality!

While I do quite like it, it's absolutely not why I'm a fan of her at all.

I can't imagine NOT KNOWING 'Murder On The Dancefloor', that's just insane. I still hear it around so much to this day not even out of choice. laugh.gif

Posted by: WinterFreeze 15th July 2020, 11:03 PM

Intrigued to see what and how many covers make the album.

Posted by: Chemistry 16th July 2020, 05:59 AM

I honestly cannot believe there are people over here who have never heard either Murder or Groovejet!! HOW is that possible laugh.gif (or Get Over You).

Quite excited for this, although it's kind of her second greatest hits in a row and I am very ready for some new material. Wonder which covers she will include this time, as she did some fun ones during her Intsagram sessions. The tour sounds like so much fun as well.

Posted by: Simon. 16th July 2020, 05:25 PM

I hope her version of ‘Don’t leave me this way’ makes it.

Posted by: slowdown73 17th July 2020, 08:22 AM

This could potentially do quite well. The orchestral collection was a bit hit and miss and didn’t quite catch on with the public but a danced up version of songs will be a lot more popular. Looking forward to seeing what’s on it!

Posted by: vibe 17th July 2020, 02:19 PM

The orchestral album was way too long ......

Radio 2 are treating us to another Kitсhen Disco show on Monday with Sophie from 7pm

Posted by: Simon. 16th September 2020, 05:30 PM

Lead single cover of Alcazar’s Crying at the Discotheque gets it’s first play on Radio 2 from 7:30am tomorrow!

Posted by: Liam.k. 16th September 2020, 05:41 PM

So ready for it!

Posted by: vibe 16th September 2020, 06:50 PM

A cool cover choice !!

Posted by: lewistgreen 16th September 2020, 07:15 PM

And it’s out on Friday. I think this’ll be a great choice as the lead single

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 16th September 2020, 09:40 PM

I know she's very fond of that song and has been performing it live for at least 15 years, but it'll be fabulous! The Alcazar version is a huuuuge favourite of mine, and this sounds like exactly what we need in 2020!

Posted by: Thom Regulus Kay 16th September 2020, 09:55 PM

I’ love her but I really hope she can do the legends that are Alcazar justice dry.gif

Posted by: Monzo 17th September 2020, 06:41 AM

I love(d) Alcazar so so much! Please let this be a good cover, Sophie!

Posted by: Simon. 17th September 2020, 08:01 AM

This suits her voice so well, love it on first listen, think it was like 7:50am if anyone wants to find it on Radio 2 website.

Posted by: WinterFreeze 17th September 2020, 08:14 AM

Will this be released tomorrow or tonigh?

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 17th September 2020, 08:27 AM

It's basically exactly the same as the original, but that's no bad thing!

Posted by: slowdown73 17th September 2020, 10:42 PM

Track list has been announced;

1. Groove jet (If this ain’t love) 2020
2. Take me home
3. Murder on a dance floor
4. Get over you
5. Music gets the best of me
6. Mixed up world
7. Catch you
8. Me and my imagination
9. Today the sun’s on us
10. Bittersweet
11. Starlight
12. Not giving up on love
13. Heartbreak (make me a dancer)
14. Young blood
15. True faith (live)
16. Do you remember the first time?
17. Come with us
18. Wild forever
19. Crying at the discotechque
20. My favourite things

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 18th September 2020, 08:32 AM

Posted by: slowdown73 18th September 2020, 09:06 AM

This looks a lot better than the orchestral thing she released recently. Does anyone know if the hits will be remixed or are the original versions? I know groovejet is a remix and have heard it’s Freemasons mix.

Posted by: gavindeejay 18th September 2020, 11:00 AM

I shouldn't like this as I love the original, but I actually think this is alright

Posted by: M4NGO 18th September 2020, 11:01 AM

It's basically the original backing track with Sophie's vocals on it laugh.gif which are quite nice I have to say. I don't think I could ever prefer it over the original though cos the original is a pop classic.

Posted by: Euphorique 18th September 2020, 02:03 PM

Yeah its basically a carbon copy of the originally, but not as well produced. Still a banger

Posted by: slowdown73 18th September 2020, 03:59 PM

Crying at the discotechque seems a bit flat compared to the original. It’s certainly not her best.

Posted by: Spiceboy 18th September 2020, 04:21 PM

I won’t change you getting snubbed!! cry.gif

Posted by: Lukuzz 18th September 2020, 04:28 PM

So it's basically another greatest hits. Thought they would be live or re recorded versions but with only 2 of them saying live or 2020 I presume the rest are the normal versions

Apparently this is what she said on IG about I Won't Change You:

Genuinely couldn’t get hold of a backing track for it which is why I didn’t sing it in the discos. I wanted to but a lot of my old material from that album got lost by my old label. It’s sad but true. X

Posted by: Miss J00ps 19th September 2020, 10:53 PM

I figured it would be an all covers album...but fair enough with the re-recordings :')

Posted by: slowdown73 21st September 2020, 01:01 PM

The album still isn’t available to preorder on Amazon 🙁

Posted by: dannjohn 30th September 2020, 02:37 PM

Another greatest hits lol but the disco version...

Posted by: slowdown73 13th October 2020, 08:30 AM

The album has been delayed until November according to someone on popjustice.

Posted by: Thom Hyphen Kay 16th October 2020, 11:04 AM

Yep, November 10th. Good news, Amazon has some signed copies now. Bad news though, https://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/order-a-signed-sophie-ellis-bextor-cd/ nocheer.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 16th October 2020, 01:44 PM

Will Spiller ever put the edits of Groovejet on Spotify etc?

Seems like just throwing easy income for both him and Sophie down the drain not to have such a big hit available to stream in its most popular version.

Sorry, typo, the 13th. Unlucky kink.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 16th October 2020, 03:26 PM

It's a curious choice to move the album back to there! Putting it right in the thick of the Christmas rush, and with Crying on the Radio 2 A-list and riding high on iTunes, next week possibly would have seen it grab a top ten placing. Not so sure that will happen in mid-November, unless she's bagged a Strictly performance or something?

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 16th October 2020, 05:00 PM

She's one artist whose almost entire career is full of grave errors, so I can't say this surprises me. laugh.gif

I can only assume it must be some kind of distribution issue?

I got the email from her store but assumed it was just the vinyl release? Troye Sivan's vinyl release was also pushed back from Oct 9 to Oct 30.
Can't see why they would push back the whole thing to Nov 13 unless there's high profile promo or so... blink.gif

Music video for 'Crying at the Discotheque' premieres at 7:30 GMT tomorrow, following Sophie's appearance on The One Show!

Can't stop listening to her cover! I know it's really faithful to the original but it works so well with her vocal.

Posted by: lewiscapaldi 29th October 2020, 08:33 PM

And here it is, filmed in several London venues to highlight how much has been put on hold due to the pandemic

Posted by: vibe 29th October 2020, 08:49 PM

What a clever video

Posted by: Monzo 31st October 2020, 08:06 AM

Why did Sophie change the spelling of the title? With Alcazar (and whoever else it has covered yet) it's Discoteque, but Sophie writes DiscotHeque, why?

Posted by: vibe 13th November 2020, 06:56 AM

Album is out but most songs blocked in my country (UK). Must be an error.

Posted by: Liam.k. 13th November 2020, 07:20 AM

Confused me trying to find the album, wasn’t showing under new releases on her Spotify page. I’ll be glad to have a vinyl of her greatest hits properly and for them not to be all the orchestral versions.

Posted by: gooddelta 13th November 2020, 09:00 AM

I accidentally ordered this twice, oops (forgot I'd pre-ordered and was too late to cancel). Still, if it helps her to the top ten! *prays*

Posted by: dannjohn 13th November 2020, 10:11 AM

It's a shame she didn't discofy some of the songs... 'Young Blood' would be fantastic upbeat.

Posted by: Chemistry 13th November 2020, 10:20 AM

Posted by: Liam.k. 13th November 2020, 11:03 AM

You need to scroll right to the bottom of her discography and it's under 'compilations'. I don't know why it's not highlighted at the top as a new album release though.

Posted by: Liam.k. 13th November 2020, 12:56 PM

I'm guessing there must be some legal issues regarding the track if Sophie had to re-record. Annoying but this new version is pretty faithful to the original at least.

It's been the same situation for years - for whatever reason Spiller and/or his record label won't license out the track, hence the live version on Read My Lips. Not sure why they're so stubborn about it.

Posted by: gooddelta 14th November 2020, 10:57 PM

Really enjoyed listening to this album, she's so fantastic wub.gif

I'd have liked to have seen Move This Mountain and I Won't Change You included to make it feel more complete though. I really underrated Not Giving Up On Love and Come With Us at the time of their respective releases, they sound better than ever now.

Of the new tracks, the Groovejet re-record is a scarily faithful reproduction seeing as the backing track must have been produced from the ground up. Hopefully one day the original radio edit will make it to streaming platforms. The New Order and Pulp covers are both really good, although I think I have the former on a Radio 2 album, and her cover of My Favourite Things is a great album closer, very West End, she sounds great on it.

Posted by: spiceboy 14th November 2020, 11:05 PM

Looking forwards to giving this a listen on Spotify, might purchase a copy too!

Posted by: slowdown73 15th November 2020, 12:16 AM

The CD is not stocked in Sainsburys or Tesco so most people will have to purchase the CD online.

Posted by: vibe 15th November 2020, 10:33 AM

Half the album is still not available on Apple Music !!

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 16th November 2020, 12:00 PM

Like gooddelta said, I am really impressed with how they've managed to replicate 'Groovejet' to sound almost exactly like the original considering they've had to literally remake it from scratch.

Posted by: dannjohn 16th November 2020, 12:54 PM

It works of a sample though doesn't it... so I can't imagine it was that hard?

Posted by: tommie 17th November 2020, 10:54 AM

Nice to see this in the top ten, hopefully streaming will make this "sell" even in small amounts as time passes.

Posted by: Bjork 17th November 2020, 12:01 PM

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 17th November 2020, 06:52 PM

I think it'll end up in the top 15, but considering that the main promo push was essentially her doing Instagram videos I think it's doing well enough. With all the hits being on it (bar I Won't Change You) it should hopefully rack up streaming "sales" over time.

Posted by: gooddelta 18th November 2020, 08:45 AM

She's mentioned a few times that she didn't perform I Won't Change You at the Kitchen Discos because she doesn't have the backing track and the masters for that album were all lost. Is that why it's also not on the greatest hits? I'd have thought she'd re-recorded it if she'd wanted it on there.

She posted yesterday on Instagram that she would have happily sung I Won't Change You during the iamspamspamamidisco, but she does not have the backing track for it. Apparently all the masters for the whole album got lost (expect for Mixed Up World, I guess..).

You’ve been in the music industry for over 20 years now - any embarrassing moments?

"Absolutely billions of them. The first was when I went to Australia for promotion and Ronan Keating was also out there. We’re on the same label and at the time he was asking if I’d like to do a duet on his new record and I’d just brought out my first album, so very politely I said now wasn’t the time.

"He messaged me in Australia and asked if I would perform on stage with him but I’d only just arrived and was really jet lagged, so I said no for now. I turned up at the gig – he was performing at this massive arena with 15,000 people - and as I sat down he said, ‘I hear Sophie’s here – I asked her to do a duet with me but she says she was too busy.’ I was properly mortified - I still think about it."

She's so funny laugh.gif

Good opening week, shame it didnt get the 10k but it came close and i think sophie will be happy with those sales.

Posted by: J00psichord 20th November 2020, 09:09 PM

So is it re-recordings of her old songs or just the originals?

Only Groovejet is a re-recording.

Singles from her first two albums are blocked on Apple Music .

Her sales are fairly impressive for #8 close to 10k well done Sophie 👏

First three, in fact! Although you can listen via their respective albums, but that must harm its streaming (surely more people will be listening to Murder on the Dancefloor/Take Me Home/Get Over You over the likes of Bittersweet and Come With Us?!).

Probably a rights issue, surely Polydor would want the royalties from plays of the whole compilation? Bizarre decision.

10,844 Wanderlust (#4, 2014)
5,107 Familia (#12, 2016)
4,795 The Song Diaries (#14, 2019)

She basically doubled The Song Diaries and wasn't too far off Wanderlust which did well for her, so I think this is a decent result for something that was seemingly thrown together due to her Instagram lives.

It isn't bizarre at all. Polydor will get royalties for their songs only if they are streamed from the respective parent albums. Cooking Vinyl will get royalties for songs that are streamed from K!tchen Disco.

Posted by: Alberto! 22nd November 2020, 12:16 AM

It did really well indeed. It's (almost) her best result in 13 years, and at a time where competition is tough, with an album of old songs, and relevance also not being by her side. Very well done!

Really didn't expect this, can't see it really helping the album. She should've released her version of Lady (Hear me tonight) or Sing it back and added it on to the album.

Ah well. Hopefully it can keep "selling" via streams, even if it's just a 100 a week.

Didn't Mel C perform High Heels there last year? laugh.gif

Either way, good for her. I would've gone with a greatest hits medley though to push the album. Maybe something like Murder / Mixed Up / Catch You / Heartbreak Make Me A Dancer / Young Blood / Groovejet (though that would probably be too long lol).

That's rather impressive. I know iTunes these day doesn't mean much, especially for songs, but hopefully it could see the album getting back into the top 100! Graham must have had some good impact for her.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 2nd January 2021, 01:50 PM

Good to see the album and single picking up some extra sales, she had a great performance on Graham Norton.

Posted by: Liam.k. 4th January 2021, 01:26 AM

Just caught up on her recent performances - both fantastic, 'Crying at the Discotheque' feels like its her own and I don't think I'll ever tire of hearing 'Murder on the Dancefloor'.

I was very happy to see Sophie in the iTunes Top 10 on both songs and albums, I suspected Graham Norton would have a big effect but it's still wonderful to see the proof.

I know it doesn't mean much but 'Crying at the Discotheque' had a decent sales chart run and should achieve a new peak this week:

I'm just grateful for whatever I can get, although a top 40 return would be incredible.

Posted by: Liam.k. 7th January 2021, 01:24 PM

#41 today. Shame to see it drop so much, I suppose it was inevitable but I got excited for a solid Top 40 return after it first appeared at #19 earlier in the week.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 7th January 2021, 02:36 PM

I thought it would hang on in the top 40 and its a shame it hasnt but hopefully top 50 is safe, when the album fell out of the top 100 been honest i never thought it would return again so this is a bonus.

That's not too bad for an album that's only charted three weeks in a very low sales climate I suppose. I hope it can continue to rack up sales, even if it's just 100 a week.

Posted by: Liam.k. 20th January 2021, 12:25 PM

Week-by-week sales:

26/11/20 08 9,809
03/12/20 82 1,742
10/12/20 156 1,193
17/12/20 169 1,156
24/12/20 OUT 1,000 (est) *
31/12/20 OUT 1,000 (est)
07/01/21 OUT 553
14/01/21 54 1,602 18,048
21/01/21 OUT

* The album appeared in the midweeks all week; on the Thursday update, it had sold 866 copies with 146 sold on the Wednesday. If it sold the same amount on the Thursday, it would have sold 1012 copies for the week. The #200 that week sold 1013 copies.

I'm guessing the album went back to 500-ish copies last week.

Sales chart run: 7-40-75-79-98-88-79-10-58-91 {10 wks}

I guess with everything shutting down the physical sales have to, hence how she could chart at 10 last week on the sales chart and still end up at #54, while for the debut week her sales position and on the main chart seemed to align more (#7/#8).

Edit: updated with week 10.
