BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Buzzjack's Favourite Solo Female Act

Posted by: Gezza 11th November 2019, 08:00 PM

Combining two of Buzzjack's favourite pastimes (The Charts and Female pop stars) seems like a no brainer for a rate right?

Everyone likes a rate right? Well as we approach the end of another decade we’ve decided to ask you, the Buzzjack faithful to compile your list of your favourite female solo acts of all time!

So what’s the criteria?

As this is the UK Charts section there are some proviso’s around who can be nominated

1) The act in question must have had at least one Top 40 single on which they are individually credited
2) That credit may have been a feature so Florence + The Machine may not make Florence Welch eligible but her solo credit on Calvin Harris’ “Sweet Nothing” does makes her a candidate- for example
3) Similarly girl groups are not eligible unless the members are credited with their own names on a top 40 single.
4) To avoid confusion on credits I will treat polyhex.com as the bible

How do I Vote?

Simples. Just PM me with your votes before 23.00 on Friday 6th December 2019 with your top 30 list of your ladies of pop.

Scoring:

The act you place at No 1 on your list will receive 30 points, No 2 will get 29 points and so on until your 30th lady gets 1 point.

We then tally up your marks to give us the ultimate list!

But I don’t like/ know 30 female solo singers?

Firstly what are you doing on Buzzjack? But if you really can’t then that’s fine just submit what you can BUT your No 1 will only get the number of points for the number of acts you enter- for example if your list has 23 female acts then your No 1 gets 23 points etc.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss/ stan for your fave’s but PLEASE DO NOT REVEAL YOUR SCORES FOR ANY ACT.

You may submit commentary with your scores if you wish and it is encouraged as to why that act means so much to you, but it’s not obligatory!

AND ABOVE ALL HAVE FUN........AND BE NICE! biggrin.gif

I really, REALLY hope Kelly Clarkson isn't overlooked in the results!

Also yaaaas. That means I can use Tinashe & Loreen, potentially *.*

I think we have to stick with the official overall top 40 for consistency

if anyone is still compiling their lists then I thought i'd help with some inspirations- here's some contenders from the 60s

more decades will follow over the week biggrin.gif

Please note not all the acts in the linked video's will be eligible for this rate given the criteria in post 1.

Some more from the 50s/60s/70s for your consideration

Same disclaimer as before

And here's some 80 considerations for you

Posted by: Bjork 27th November 2019, 05:06 PM

does Sade count?

Posted by: Gezza 27th November 2019, 05:58 PM

No afraid not as "Sade" are a group not a soloist.

Posted by: Bjork 27th November 2019, 06:08 PM

I know, for me Sade is also a band, but from memory I'd say she was always being nominated at the Brits for Best Solo Female

Good old BRITS eh. Same with Toyah to some extent although she did actually go solo in 1985 and get a top 40 single so is eligible.

OMG I forgot Nina Simone! ohmy.gif

Great inclusion though, it's nice to see some of the older acts make an appearance as they don't often get mentioned on Buzzjack. You're so Vain by Carly Simon is one of my favourite songs, plus her bond theme is great too wub.gif

Posted by: FelizNavidad 22nd December 2019, 01:48 PM

I didn't vote in this, but PJ Harvey would have been one of my nominations. Stories From The City... is one of my favourite albums.
Q Magazine ran the same poll as this in 2001 and she came top.

I think the random ones are just as fun as the bigger names which will doubtless be appearing at some point!

So every lady left in the rundown has to have had at least 2 voters! We'll eliminate three a day moving forward to the top 20. Acts on the same points will be separated firstly by number of voters and if that's equal then the highest individual score given to them by a voter.

Posted by: Bjork 11th January 2020, 01:08 PM

Tracy Chapman is such a talent, deserved to be much higher... her debut album is a masterpiece, still to this day remember the words to all the songs and can sing any random track...

it saddens me she only got 1 hit (Fast Car) and even that was outpeaked by one of the worst covers in the history of music (Jonas Blue)

and to make things even worst, a cover of Baby Can I Hold You (which flopped for Tracy) was a huge hit for Boyzone who did another awful awful cover :/

there is no justice in the music world :/

Surprised I left Anastacia off my list I loved her back in the day and probably prefer her to a few on the lower end of my list laugh.gif

She was so huge for a time as well. She had like three successful eras here before her success died off. A bit like Avril Lavigne.

OMG how was 'Right Beside You' Sophie B. Hawkins' biggest hit?
'Damn! I Wish I Was Your Lover' and 'As I Lay Me Down' are definitely better songs and were also much bugger hits for her here in Australia too. I'm shook.

Posted by: Bjork 14th January 2020, 07:14 AM

^Also in the US, well in the UK Damn I Wish I was your Lover was her first hit and peaked at #14 (#5 in the US)... Right Beside You was the lead of her 2nd album and peaked at #13 but underperformed in the US, where As I Lay Me Down was a big hit (#6) as the 3rd single from her 2nd album, but only peaked at #24 in the UK.

this is her discography:
US
Damn I Wish I was Your Lover #5
Right Beside You #56
As I Lay Me Down #6
Only love #49

UK
Damn I Wish I was Your Lover #14
California here I Come #53
I Want You #49
Right Beside You #13
Don't don't tell me no #36
As I Lay Me Down #24

Posted by: StoneDragon 17th January 2020, 09:26 PM

There are a few amazing artists who I completely forgot about! Billie Eilish, Little Boots, Demi, Aretha & Paloma. Just realised someone who would've been really high in my vote too (although they've not been announced yet - initials AL).

Posted by: Jordan Lee 17th January 2020, 09:42 PM

I like both Delta and Nicole.

Nicole is such a talent as a live vocalist and performer but she lacked the actual material to make me vote for her.

But she’s more talented than a few people I did vote for they just have the bops.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 17th January 2020, 10:25 PM

Delta had a great debut but it we it wrong after that.nicole does have the voice but the solo material just didn't work for her.

Zero talent? I'm not a fan of Delta or Nicole but I wouldn't dream of saying neither has any talent, both are great vocalists.

Geri might not have alot of vocal talent, however she is very creative and had a huge hand in the writing of her own and Spice Girls songs so once again zero talent is a ridiculous statement.

No One was her stand out release that deserved a much higher chart position.
I had thought, she had some Number 1 singles.

Tori <3 she deserved #1, most talented female singer in the history of music, without a shadow of a doubt, the music, those lyrics, and her gigs most times playing two pianos at the same time... guess the new generations don't know much about her besides Professional Widow but I guess she's done pretty well

ouch forgot to vote for Nelly Furtado, another big fav of mine since day 1

Posted by: pippa 21st January 2020, 08:36 PM

3 great female singers in a row that i didn't award points to.
I just preferred the others i awarded points to, but, have purchased at least 1 album from all of these 3 with Nelly Furtado the one i would overall like the most.

Posted by: dandy* 21st January 2020, 10:25 PM

I didn’t even consider Florence as a soloist! She would definitely have received points from me.

And my beloved Tori! At one stage she would have been #1 for me also but she kinda lost it over the past 15 years and I’ve found myself listening to her less often. Still an all time fave though wub.gif

Was never a big tori Amos fan, I've liked occasional songs.

All Nelly's albums are great and all have some classics
problem with the Loose tracks is that they're 100% Timbaland and his sound is very 00s and Kinda dated

I made myself an Annie Lennox playlist just yesterday so very timely for her to appear. She's undoubtedly very talented and deserves a lot of recognition, especially when you factor in her Eurythmics work.

Obviously Robyn is my favourite of the bunch there, she barely puts a foot wrong for me (aside from her very early material) and is easily the most consistent act of the past decade for me. wub.gif

Gwen I like but she has some absolute horrors in her discography. Her albums usually have a couple of great moments though and you can just about make a decent album from her material if you discard about 70% of it!!! Push and Shove though (No Doubt) is an absolute tune! wub.gif

Posted by: vibe 22nd January 2020, 06:13 PM

Nice result for Robyn !

Gwen received votes from 12 members I think that is the highest so far .

problem with Annie Lennox, Gwen, is that people are judging them from their entire career including their previous bands

Annie Lennox shouldn't be so high if you only consider her solo material

same for Florence, I mean if you consider her solo material she just has that song with Calvin Harris

that's why I didn't vote for any of those

I was referring to the other 2 you said had no talent actually, Nicole Scherzinger & Delta Goodrem.
That is a ridiculous statement, especially the songwriting abilities of Delta Goodrem, even if you don't like her music, her songwriting is immaculate.
Also, Geri Halliwell literally wrote most of the Spice Girls' output so saying she is a shit songwriter, gurl bye! Vocally challenged yes but terrific songwriter.

Would never have predicted Björk to be that high up on a Buzzjack poll ohmy.gif

Pleased to see Avril Top 25, 'The Best Damn Thing' is one of the finest pop/rock albums of the 2000s, and the two before that were pretty decent too. Didn't even recognise her in that picture though, I thought it was Adele at first glance laugh.gif

Ellie's very hit and miss for me but I expected her around that position.

Posted by: Esmerelda 28th January 2020, 06:01 PM

Pleasantly surprised to see Bjork so high.

If Alexa had voted Ellie would be number 1 for sure.

Posted by: dandy* 28th January 2020, 06:08 PM

How lovely that Bjork voted for herself

Posted by: Gezza 28th January 2020, 06:51 PM

I know! I think it's clear from the scores that people either really love Bjork or they just don't get her.

Tomorrow three voters will lose their Fave's!

Posted by: pippa 28th January 2020, 07:06 PM

I would have liked Bjork ahead of Ellie Goulding and Avril Lavigne.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 28th January 2020, 07:11 PM

Ellie’s highs for me are like super high but she is quite inconsistent for me.

Her first two albums are brilliant but then she become hit and miss from then on. I love her soundtrack singles and her more sombre stuff (like River). But her recent pop stuff isn’t great.

I was considering voting for her tbh! Her, Robyn and Kelis I’m shocked I didn’t put on my list.

Posted by: Lukuzz 28th January 2020, 08:23 PM

Glad to see Cheryl and Miley so high.
8 out of my Top 10 still in there I think

Posted by: vibe 28th January 2020, 09:11 PM

Ellie that high !!

Quite surprised Bjork is that high .

Does Avril have the most amount of member votes so far ??

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 29th January 2020, 01:35 AM

I like various songs from ellie, Bjorn and avril but didn't score them.

Surprised Xtina is still to come tbh.

Posted by: Bjork 29th January 2020, 06:16 PM

great for Lana
sucks that her highest chart peaking song is Don't call me angel, easily the worst thing she's attached her name to

Posted by: Spiceboy 29th January 2020, 06:19 PM

Noooooooo not Cher!!! She is an icon! wub.gif

Posted by: Jordan Lee 29th January 2020, 06:37 PM

Leona wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif

Part of why I voted her so high is because I felt she’d be forgotten on some people’s so to see her this high is great.

Lana is fantastic too. One of my favourite artists of the 2010s decade and Born To Die is probably my favourite debut era of all time’

Am I right in thinking the biggest hit is just biggest in terms of peaks and not sales!

Loving the stats though. I’ve been enjoying seeing how many top 40 hits everyone who’s featured has had.

Did Amy Winehouse not feature in this!?

I’m baffled I didnt give her a vote. I can’t imagine she’s still to come but can’t remember seeing her name appear on this list.

Cher and Leona two of my all time favourites. Glad my number 1 is top 20

Posted by: King Rollo 29th January 2020, 09:15 PM

Just three of the singers I voted for are left.

I've tried to write down a list of who is in the top 20 but I can only think of 16. I'm sure Amy Winehouse is still to come,Jordan. There must be some obvious ones that I couldn't think of.

I’m doing the same! (I got 15 laugh.gif )

I think I have an inkling of who the top 5 and winner will be but the random ones are what’s making it more exciting. I’m so shocked but happy if Amy still is to come but because of how short her back catalogue is I felt she could’ve been overlooked.

Leona - she has one good song . Two at a push lol

i love Leona but she only released one good song (One more sleep) after her debut album....

Posted by: M4NGO 30th January 2020, 10:06 AM

What are we thinking for Top 10 then?

My guess would be something like...

1 Madonna
2 Kylie
3 Beyonce
4 Lady Gaga
5 Rihanna
6 Adele
7 Taylor
8 Pink
9 Britney
10 Katy Perry

Rest of Top 20:
Ariana
Christina
Kelly Clarkson
Amy Winehouse
...

And then another six that I can't think of! Clearly I've missed some really obvious ones but I just can't think who unsure.gif

EDIT: Whitney, Mariah, Janet Jackson... but that still leaves three. Have we had Celine Dion yet? Though I'd be very surprised at her being Top 20 tbh.

Posted by: Esmerelda 30th January 2020, 10:29 AM

Hoping Kate Bush features somewhere in the top 20- though that may be a bit optimistic.

I agree with all the people you said but think Adele too! So that leaves 2!

Edit you actually said her!!!

There's no way Ava Max could be Top 20 when Dua Lipa only just scraped the Top 40!

I think it must be Kate Bush.

I voted for who I thinks gonna win but she wasn’t in my top 5.

Madonna deserves to finish higher than Kylie though. She’s much more impactful and across their entire careers has much more highs.

Kylies quite similar to Britney for me. Both have had a great singles trajectory but have very patchy albums.

Kylie has had at least 50 hit singles during a 33 year career not mentioning her amazing albums.... i’m sure u havent listened to many of her albums because some of the album tracks r better than the singles, just listen to X, Aphrodite, Light Years , Golden etc and you’ll see my point...meanwhile Madonna hasn’t released a good single since Celebration more than 10 years ago....same goes for Britney... don’t get me wrong i love them both but Kylie is on another level...

I can't believe I didn't include Amy Winehouse on my own list... I also can't believe she is above Cher I mean seriously what!?!?

Posted by: Jordan Lee 31st January 2020, 06:49 AM

So I did vote for Amy after all! Thank god for that really glad she got top 20! I didn’t realise she had that many fans in here. I was worried she’d miss out or be low down on here due to her career being so untimely short. Back to Black is a masterpiece though and even aside from that album Frank is still a really good album!

Xtina though. She’s went about where I expected her too on here. There’s only one person I could put above her though.

Christina is so versatile though! And so underrated now as well. She genuinely has a talent and she can still pull off a live vocal to this day. She has some incredible vocal performances over her career. Plus for the new pop girls she practically reinvented the whole good girl gone bad style era / images. Like Miley, Selena, Demi even someone I really stan/love in Ariana as well. They’ve all been inspired in some way by Stripped. You can see the impact that era has had / continues to have.

She really deserved the same longevity and relevancy P!nk managed to get through into the 10s decade. But yeah forever an icon and Stripped is my all time favourite album.

I don't think Madame x is daring, i think it is, in large a complete mess with elements of Madonna chasing a trend that did not work for her and the album is one of the low points of her career.
I refers to Kylie's, Kiss Me Once in the same manner.
Kylie, Madonna and Britney have all delivered over the years, some of their albums are better than others.
That said, Kylie hit perfection with Light Years, which is one of my all time favourite albums.

I still really enjoy Madame X, definitely better than anything Kylie or Madonna put out in the rest of the decade - although I’m not sure why they always have to be pitted against each other!

I do get what Jordan is saying, Kylie has some excellent singles and will deservedly finish high in this but I don’t personally think she’s even managed a great album - and I have heard them.

Me too! She has a great singles catalogue though but she’s no where near as innovative and unique as Madonna. Kylie could never pull off something like God Control with that video at this stage in her career.

I can see why Kylie's popular in the UK and of all the major female stars we have I think she’s one of the nicest on a personal level. But I can see why she never really took off over in the states. She lacks something to make me stan her. I can only make the Britney comparison because I feel the same about her. Singles artist, hasn’t made strong album, not the best live vocalist. She’s way more similar to Britney than she is Madonna.

Posted by: M4NGO 31st January 2020, 11:37 PM

Kylie and Madonna are both legends, end of. Let's stop comparing them. I hope they finish in first and second place here although this is Buzzjack so it's anyone's guess really.

I'm surprised that both J Lo and Celine made it into the Top 20 but both have delivered some great songs over the years so I can't really say their positions aren't deserved. 'Papi' is pure pop perfection and deserved so much better than its #67 peak.

Posted by: Jonjo 1st February 2020, 12:08 AM

I'm gonna guess the top 5 will be

01. Madonna
02. Lady Gaga
03. Kylie
04. Britney
05. Rihanna

Although I think Britney and Rihanna could be interchangeable (with P!nk having an outside chance of causing an upset and finishing above one of them, or even both). Y'all could have this argument for hours and hours and get nowhere. laugh.gif Britney is my favourite as she rarely ever puts a foot wrong for me. That includes albums and singles. But a lot of people will disagree and prefer other artists singles/albums and think of them in the same way as I do with Britney. It's kind of a pointless argument to have in all honesty aha.

EDIT: *Ends up with Mollie King in the top 3*

Posted by: Jordan Lee 1st February 2020, 12:16 AM

P!nk is someone who I predict will do well because almost everyone I know likes her.

She has less die hard fans than Britney / Gaga but less people who dislike her so she could well cause an upset here. I think she’s got her fair share of fans here. I can her being a lot of people’s like 8/9th fave with all those votes adding up.

I’m expecting the same top 4 as you but with Madonna and Kylie reversed! I could possibly see a few people in 5th spot though maybe even Katy?

I’d love Madonna to win and think it would be deserved, I’m not sure she will though as I think other acts have bigger fan bases on here.

QUOTE(Jordan Lee @ Feb 1 2020, 01:24 AM) *

She’s way more similar to Britney than she is Madonna.

i’m sure u have never seen Kylie live because if u did u should know she’s a great vocalist and a great performer, on the other hand Madonna’s latest live shows have been lip synced and miming with boring repeated visuals....

kylie never made it in the States because her management decided against it and she was never promoted there except during the Fever era which was a big hit... her managment ruined any chances of her having a lasting career in the US by not promoting her, by releasing the wrong singles..... she definitly doesnt lack material!!!!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 1st February 2020, 12:45 PM

I personally find her very overrated but I thought Beyoncé would be a lot higher! I also thought she’d have got a few 30s as well.

Never thought Janet would beat Beyoncé!

Janet has some great tracks and music videos. I almost voted for her actually. Together Again is still timeless to this day for me.

It’s ironic in a way that Janet and Beyoncé are together because a lot of Beyoncé’s dance routines and certain visuals remind me of Janet.

Posted by: Lukuzz 1st February 2020, 02:15 PM

Glad to see Beyonce where she is, I love her hence my 10 points but I do think she is a tad overrated and was fully expecting her to be top 5

GOBsmacked at Beyoncé being that low! And equally as surprised at Janet being that high. She's always been a bit hit and miss for me, 'Janet' being her only era which I properly loved. What a song 'Again' is wub.gif

Anyone of us who voted Kate Bush gave high points which shows she must be love or hate here. Really thought Kate would be easily top 10.

Someone will lose their 30 pointer tomorrow as it just misses the top 10!

Posted by: marcinjaro 2nd February 2020, 02:46 PM

I'm really sorry that Kate Bush did not manage to reach The Top 10. The survey shows a lot of people love her.
The presentation is becoming more and more exciting. Fingers crossed for Madame X.

Posted by: Esmerelda 2nd February 2020, 05:28 PM

Glad Kate managed as high as 13th- she would have been my 30 pointer had I voted.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 2nd February 2020, 05:34 PM

Ariana beating Beyoncé was a shock but a pleasant one! But she’s been everywhere this last year or so she’d have been fresh in people’s minds when doing the vote. She’s a real star though so glad to see she finished high on this list. (I imagine she’s the highest artist on the list who debuted in 10s decade too?).

Still surprised Kelly Clarkson is still to come! She should be one of the ones to go tomorrow I’d imagine.

Kate Bush has some stand on here too! I really like some of her music tbh but I’m not like that invested in her. But a great talent.

1 Madonna

3 Britney
4 Lady Gaga
5 Pink
6 Rihanna

Katy and Taylor are way overrated here.

I actually think Kylie is going to win this (but Madonna deserves too).

My predictions

1. Kylie
2. Rihanna
3. Madonna
4. Lady Gaga
5. Britney Spears
6. Whitney Houston
7. Pink
8. Kelly Clarkson
9. Mariah Carey
10. Adele

Aww Kelly, my number 1 of all time. She is so underrated. Love her

Posted by: Jordan Lee 5th February 2020, 12:13 AM

Kelly is kinda like a mix of the 2000’s decade Pink and Xtina lyrically in places. But she doesn’t have the extravagant performances those do. But she does bring the vocals.

I do love her. She’s my second fave female who win a TV show (after Leona). And she still has that voice. I’m shocked she made top ten but I think she’s generally popular with people not so much that she has a stan like fanbase but a lot of casual fans. She’s also super personable too, very down to earth and her live vocals are STRONG too so she’s deserving of top ten. But I’d have put Xtina above her personally as I think she’s had much more impact with my generation.

Mariah Carey, i expected a sure fire Top 10 result and possibly higher than number 9.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 5th February 2020, 05:57 PM

Mariah is an icon.

I’ve only recently gotten into her which is why she was like mid table for me but her legacy has been undeniable.

90s Mariah especially was like a force. It’s baffling to me she only has two UK #1 singles.

Posted by: Jamie Barkley 5th February 2020, 07:01 PM

Mariah only really clicked with me a few years ago and now I legitimately don't think she has one song I'd give less than a 6/10.

In the words of ToddInTheShadows, she just sounds so damn happy to be singing!

Posted by: pippa 5th February 2020, 09:38 PM

90's Mariah was so enjoyable and of course the legendary best Christmas song ever.
Her output in later years is not as appealing.

Mariah is a legend and considering she was 'finished' in the early 2000's, the comeback and sustained career just goes to show how remarkable she is.

Posted by: Bjork 6th February 2020, 12:07 PM

One of those artists for me that’s just so very consistent. Almost everything she releases I like and as a live performer she’s absolutely EPIC. I hope Gaga and Madonna are the top 2.

I think either Kylie or Britney has won tbh.

I’d personally rank them as

1. Gaga
2. Madonna
3. Rihanna
4. Britney
5. Kylie

I’m sure everyone left featured in my list laugh.gif

Id love a Kylie win but am not in any confident it will happen. I hope Rihanna is out next.

Posted by: M4NGO 9th February 2020, 12:04 AM

Pink wub.gif Living Legend. Her albums maybe aren't as consistent as others' for me but her singles discography is amongst my favourite ever. A shame that she missed out on the Top 5.

Top 5 predix:
5 Gaga
4 Rihanna
3 Britney
2 Kylie
1 Madonna

I'd be happy for the Top 2 to be Kylie and Madonna, either way round.

good Pink made it to #6, except Madonna she's far more talented than those other 4 in the top 5

in those top 5 for me it's:
Madonna >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Gaga>>>>>Rihanna
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Britney>Kylie

I understand fans being obsessed with Britney or Kylie but personally don't think they're that talented? what talent do they have?
having a good team that shops for good songs?

Riri heart.gif

She'd probs be higher if she took her own advice and didn't stop the music!!

Britney ftw, but I think she'll be out next. For some reason I don't know if Madge will win anymore. I can see a Gaga win with Kylie 2nd, leaving Madge in 3rd, just as easily as I can see a 01. Madge > 02. Gaga > 03. Kylie finish.

I’d definitely agree on that top 5! Although I think Gaga is more talented than Madonna. Madonna is the queen and she’s released a lot more material so I’d put her as #1. Kylie and Brit are both overrated and more talented people have left earlier but they have their stans.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 9th February 2020, 12:39 PM

As for Rihanna at #5 that’s what I expected.

She’s brilliant though. Every album from her shows something different, she’s versatile, daring and different too she isn’t afraid to change her image or sound and she’s worked with so many people too each collab offering something different too.

I can’t wait to see what she comes up with on R9!

I disagree about kylie, kylie can write songs, just look at her impossible princess album alone plus she has wrote songs on some of her other albums aswell. To be fair to all the remaining acts they all have long careers and huge success and I dont think you can sustain those high level careers without talent. I personally think Rihanna is hugely overrated but I can recognise she isnt where she is without talent. To sustain these levels of careers requires more than just talent it requires good business heads aswell.

Y'all really out here disrespecting the legacies of Brit and Kylie? laugh.gif

I-

For the record, I think we have the PERFECT top 6 in terms of cultural relevance, as artists and as performers. These are the 6 names that would pop up (along with Beyoncé) if you asked the general public who the biggest female popstars in the world were.

Gutted I didn't vote, if I had it would have been Madonna all the way - there really isn't any competition. Just as long as its not Kylie or Gaga I'm ok. Hoped to see RiRi higher.

1 Kylie
2 Lady Gaga
3 Madoona
4 Britney

It could go either way though as all 4 have alot of fans here.

Britney about where she should be imo. Great discography despite the fact she's not the best live act around

She has some great songs and I've bought some of her albums but the fact that she rarely sings live annoys me about her.

Posted by: Jonjo 10th February 2020, 07:23 PM

The fact she still manages to sell out shows without singing live, proves otherwise. :') She's a shadow of her former self nowadays ofc, but peak Britney (2000-2005) is untouched as a live performer (this countdown is about everything, so I can live on past glory thank you biggrin.gif ). If you don't agree with her not singing live, great that's cool. Don't pay to see her that's completely up to you. But she clearly has enough interest as a live performer to give us a record breaking Vegas residency, in which she in turn made it "cool" for younger artists to opt for their own residencies and diminished the "Vegas is where artists go to rest" or whatever it was. Her power is literally still managing to sell out tours whenever she tours, even with the whole "but she doesn't sing live!!!!!11!!" headlines and comments. If she didn't put on a spectacle/show then I'd agree with the singing live criticisms. But she makes up for it in the shows imo (and a lot of other people obviously hence constantly selling out her tours etc)

She's a huge part of my upbringing. In the same way that Gaga was for many of those in 2009. In the same way that Madonna, Kylie & even Spice Girls were for the 80's & 90's kids. 'Blackout' has been named one of the most influential albums ever. An album in which she was executive producer of. She's constantly reinvented herself and is heading into her 3rd Decade as one of the most prolific names in music history. Her impact is undeniable. Her legacy in tact. She's one of the biggest female artists and performers of all time and I'm SO happy that her legacy is largely remembered here. Enough for her to finish top 4 in this list heart.gif

I LOVE HER! (Dunno if you could tell blush.gif Sorry. None of this was meant to be rude, so I apologise if it comes off that way aha - I get v protective over her. tongue.gif )

Posted by: Jordan Lee 10th February 2020, 07:30 PM

Early Britney is fantastic.

Like her singles trajectory from 99-03/04 is flawless tbh. But she’s not the most talented. And as a live act she’s appalling these days. She’s also only really made two great albums for me. In The Zone and Blackout all her other albums as a whole package are very patchy. But those early singles she released really were all genius and bring back so many memories. But I’ve always preferred Xtina over her tbh.

I actually thought Britney was gonna win this though!

I voted for her smile.gif

she was talented, but on a different league than Madonna

it's not that Kylie or Britney are not talented, but you really cannot compare

once I read a post somewhere I think popjustice that was genious
comparing Madonna with others like Kylie or Britney
paraphrasing what they were saying is that Madonna is like a sushi chef
that for 30 years ruled sushi in the world and reinvented sushi all the time
like every 3 years coming with a new trend and making classic after classic
by comparison people like Kylie or Britney, they cannot make sushi
but they're good at buying sushi, they need where to go to buy and can buy good one and sell it
but that doesn't make them sushi chefs
they're good at their job but it's another job smile.gif

Again i disagree, Madonna has an amazing career i dont take from it at all but some of her material isnt as strong as some people say.
I dont think she is or was, always the market leader.
I think Kylie, Britney, Gaga and Madonna have each had their highs and lows.
I am biased to Kylie as she is my fave, i think what Kylie has above the others is she has remained down to earth and level headed and has no airs or graces.

Posted by: M4NGO 11th February 2020, 01:08 AM

I think exactly the right three have finished in the Top 3 so I actually don't mind what order they're in (as long as Madonna is #1 and Kylie is #2 tongue.gif)

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 11th February 2020, 01:20 AM

I think it could be a close top 3 with the votes.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 11th February 2020, 01:22 AM

Everyone’s deserving of a win.

Gaga is my fave but she debuted like two decades after Kylie and Madonna so she obviously hasn’t released as much material. She’s definitely the most talented vocally of who’s left and I’d probably say she the most talented overall too. Madonna however is the most creative and versatile she’s the reinvention queen and controversy queen too.

Kylie really should finish third tbh. She’s basically like the Aussie Britney to me. Like I see them both very similarly. They both aren’t strong vocalists but put on extravagant shows, both struggle making good albums but make great singles, both have iconic music videos and images and dance routines etc but just don’t have the overall package what Gaga and Madonna have.

Comparing Kylie to Britney is totally inadmissible and lame to say the least...
They have nothing in common, Kylie sings live in all of her concerts, you have youtube to prove it if you never saw her live, Kylie is a versatile artist that sang so many different types of songs, has a career spanning more than 30 years and is still having success... I don't think I need to defend Kylie, just trying to prove your point is wrong.
Britney never sang a live tune in her concerts and has strong songs but zero talent...
Madonna is lipsyncing in her last 5 tours for half of the tour if not more, she collaborated with everyone starting 2008 to stay relevant but in vain, at least Kylie never looked for cheap success or collaborations to be successful, she always relied on her flair for good songs and concepts and up and coming producers... Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
I think Kylie is the overall number one female artist who fully made use of her talent, her sexy image, her feel good music (and only that) to be successful, she never resorted to cheap controversy or bashing religion etc (like early Gaga did and like Madonna most of her career).

well said. cheer.gif
obviously the person who falsely said that Kylie has the same vocal abilities as Britney probably has never seen or heard Kylie singing live, she has amazing vocal abilites and never sings out of tune unlike Britney who could never perform unless she’s lip synching or using vocoders...

I fully support this view.
Kylie delivers a real live show and sings live on all the songs which is something Britney has never done, or even came close to.
Kylie identifies she is not the strongest female singer in the market but she more than makes up for that in other areas and has huge levels of creativity.

Britney wins easily.

Posted by: pippa 11th February 2020, 07:02 PM

Lady Gaga has done very well.
Lady Gaga needs a few more albums to be able to compete with Kylie and Madonna to release a captivating Greatest Hits.
Lady Gaga has many songs that i think are brilliant but she also has the same amount i don't like.
I hope she can build on recent success with a Star is Born as she was decline before that release.
I am rooting for Kylie to take the crown now.

Posted by: dandy* 11th February 2020, 07:10 PM

I think we got the right top 3 in the end, certainly for a Buzzjack event anyway!

Gaga is definitely my favourite of the more recent pop females to grace us with their presence, she's just so creative! I don't like everything she does but I'd take all the duds that she sometimes throws out because for every one of those there is a absolute stormer of a track along with it.

I lowkey think it's quite likely for some reason! I don't know if many Madge stans from her forum knew about this/bothered to vote. Whereas Kylie stans were probably out in force and there are ded more Kylie stans who frequent this part of the forum more than Madge stans!

We'll see.

Loooove Gaga so much. I've only disliked one album, but even then that has some MAJOR highs wub.gif

I didn't vote but if I had of done it would be Madonna all the way.

Why? Notwithstanding her unrivalled and incomparable chart achievements in the UK and the rest of the World, she is something that many others aren't. She's a proper artist, as well as being a pop superstar. Most importantly she is authentic. Authenticity for me is key in belieivng and liking an artist. For example. when Madonna or Rihanna sing about sex I believe them. Both I'm sure, have most likely enjoyed some rather grubby fun in their time, however when Kylie or Beyonce sing about it, I don't believe them. Kylie seems to be trapped in some girl-pop giddiness, like a Japanese schoolgirl, never to grow up, much like Cliff Richards - I think she'd rather be doing her nails or posting on insta than enjoying a session in the wrong'un!

My point is, I've enjoyed much from all of those females in the Top 10 of this list, but for me (alongside Kate Bush, Debbie Harry,Bjork, Alison Goldfrapp and Billie Eilish), Madonna is a true artist and a visionary. She is the ultimate pop artist.

If I look at Kylie as a colour, she will always and only be beige for me. Madonna however, will be all colours, because she makes me feel.

if you think that Kylie is the equivalent of beige then you must be colorblind... she’s the most talented most versatile artist of all time, and unlike Madonna and Gaga she doesnt rely on cheap controversy to make headlines, she only relies on her feel good music and great songs which made her an icon to the gay community worldwide...
not to mention that your credibilty was long lost when you referred to Billie Eilish as a true artist and a visionary biggrin.gif

If Kylie looks like a school girl to you in her light years or fever eras and beyond then you most certainly have a problem in your eye sight or certain misconception that you want to enforce whatever the woman does...
Kylie is all the colours of the rainbow, she makes you go up the roof, her music is euphoric at times, dark at times, sweet at times, edgy at times and touches most topics elegantly...
Madonna turns everything into controversy or against the catholic church to make some cheap headlines with a video clip or a concert and now that all this is already done she lets her boob out to make a headline.
She has been a bully to many communities through her image and messages, I don't see anywhere where she evolved with her views...

Gaga #3 sounds about right
For me, Gaga started amazingly with her debut having like 5 songs at least that are a 10/10
but actually for me she peaked with her debut and never delivered again
Album #2 was the biggest disappointment ever, with just one good song (Edge of Glory) but the rest is bad, especially the lead single
Album #3 was even worst, with not a single track above 5/10
Album #4 again was bad but was saved by A Million Reasons, which is easily her best song ever, an 11/10 of a song, but the album overall it's not good
seems like now ballads are saving here but she doesn't seem to be capable to write a great pop song again
let's see with the new album, Stupid Love seems ok but it's not a 10/10 either

Why do people continue to slate either of them? They are both deserved successes and clearly have talent.

I love Madonna and think she’s very deserving of her Queen of Pop status and she’s my winner, however Kylie is still very much pop royalty too!

OMG Born This Way is her best album!!! ohmy.gif I find the fame to be her weakest, the three big singles aside. Fame Monster was great though.

I agree about a million reasons it's one of her very very best singles.

I agree with that too, it's just a really well written melody. Out of all of her songs, I can see Million Reasons turning into an enduring classic - along with the main highlights from A Star Is Born.

Nooo Kylie. Didn't realise Madonna still had so many fans on here

Posted by: dandy* 12th February 2020, 06:17 PM

I am pleasantly surprised! I thought the same as Jonjo, this place often seems to have more of a Kylie fanbase so I was expecting her to win. Intrigued by how close it was now...

Out of the two of them Madonna is far better!

Madonna was a very worthy winner here heart.gif

Hasn't this been FUN! Thanks to everyone who voted and contributed- We'll run this again- maybe in a few years! Until then MADONNA rules the roost!

Posted by: dandy* 12th February 2020, 06:30 PM

Thanks for your efforts on this gezza - I've really enjoyed it, especially not having an inkling of who has done well in people's votes!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 12th February 2020, 06:31 PM

I’ve really enjoyed counting this down over the last few weeks.

I’d be so intrigued to see my full list as when it was getting revealed I was thinking who did I vote for when I live some of these artists I didn’t give a vote too.

Madonna deserved that win. I really thought it was gonna be a Britney v Kylie top 2 so I’m pleased that it was Madge who done it in the end heart.gif

Posted by: jra1989 12th February 2020, 06:36 PM

A brilliant thread! I’ve been captivated by the run down. Thanks for all your hard work.

Posted by: Lukuzz 12th February 2020, 06:37 PM

Thanks for this, was a great countdown. Not who I would have wanted to win but I can see why she did

Posted by: marcinjaro 12th February 2020, 06:41 PM

Thank you for the threat and all these wonderful weeks of revealing our votes.
I hope we can expect Buzzjack's Favourite Solo Male Act soon.

oh no😱 so disappointing.... thought Kylie would win by a landslide, she deserved to win this a lot more than Madonna who hasn’t released anything good since the Confessions album in 2005...

If we were judging this solely on the past 10-15 years, frankly neither would be anywhere near.
