As we delve into the harsh cold weather we're facing right now, let's escape to tropical shores and places far abroad to bask in two of Madonna's hottest (literally) records. Both of these songs take the theme of escapism. 'Holiday' is quite explicitly about escaping the world for a holiday to celebrate and has been included as the encore on tour as it's the perfect, joyous send off. It was her first true hit and the song that began her tremendous journey but has it aged well? In the other corner we have 'La Isla Bonita' another song in which Madonna dreams of getting away, but this time it is more mystical, more subtle and more mysterious. The Latino sounds relate to the tropical escape she sings of and it's a tribute to the "beauty of mystery of Latin American people" but does it appeal to you? Vote for your favourite one in the poll and comment in the thread below! Also discuss any other favourite songs or lyrics that relate to these. |

La Isla Bonita <3 I feel as though Holiday is one of Madonna's biggest, most iconic hits to have aged the least well since the 80s. Whereas La Isla Bonita still sounds amazing, not to mention it's off the best Madonna album.

'Holiday' for me, it's an anthem. Those drums towards the end are the best bit of course.
'La Isla Bonita' I rarely ever bother with and always overlook it in her discography, but I did enjoy it when I saw her so maybe I should just spend an hour looping it to see if I can feel the magic. |

Holiday is solid, but I've never loved it, it's just a bit too basic. La Isla Bonita is amazing though, definitely one of her very best songs and some of the live performances have also been amazing.

'Holiday' in its own right is a really solid, feel-good dance-pop song; instantly 80s but it's somewhat timeless given its classic status. It can seem basic when you compare it to other Madonna songs but it does exactly what it was set out to do. It's like one big chorus and I defy anyone who wouldn't sing along if this was played at a party.
'La Isla Bonita' definitely wins the escapism battle - that tropical melody with the Latin guitar and castanets and maracas effortlessly transports me to a Spanish beach in my mind and I love Madonna's deeper vocals. One that I've grown to absolutely adore as time has gone on. |
