I prefer the Percy Sledge song of the two but both are good.

2 great songs in the top 2!

Mental as Anything as Snake says I associate with football!

Love how the TOTP studio is a lot more controlled in terms of the crowd behind the singers by this stage of the 80s. No more dancers either!

7TH MARCH

“Stand By Me” has now sold 349,282 copies during its four week chart journey so far, that includes 112,863 sold last week, its clearly cooling now but should be good for another week at least and should go unchallenged by Percy Sledge who does hold at No 2 but on a reduced sales himself of 73,576.

A major challenger to King’s supremacy could be Boy George who has embarked on his solo career after disbanding Culture Club last year and spending more time in court, prison cells, and rehabilitation after his drug habit became a news event. He puts that all behind him with the release of Bread’s “Everything I Own”, a song penned by David Gates as a tribute to his father which is more famous in this country at least thanks to a reggae version by Ken Boothe which beat the No 32 of the original and topped the charts in 1974 and it’s the latter version that George’s version draws on. His debut solo album is expected in the Summer but to tide his fans over his new single debuts at No 7 this week with 37,689 sales.

Another frontman heading out on his own is Freddie Mercury, with Queen on Hiatus at present Mercury is busy recording a second studio album which should include his cover of the Platters hit “The Great Pretender”. The song was a US hit for them in 1955 but as was often the case in the 50s the song was leased to other acts and the first time it hit the top 10 was in a version by Jimmy Parkinson (No 9) before the Platters version itself went to No 5 here later in 1956, however Mercury’s version is off to a flying start and becomes our second new entry in the top 10 as it crashes in at No 9 (37,196)

Jackie Wilson is also returning to the charts this week, his last single was of course the Christmas No 1 and the record company have gone with another re-issue this time of his 1972 hit “I Get The Sweetest Feeling” which was, “Reet Petite” aside, his biggest UK hit when it made No 9. Initial signs are looking good as the song explodes 23-10 (34,782)- that figure is the most required for the top 10 since Christmas 1985.

Mental As Anything power 8-3 (53,839) and have an outside chance at No 1 next week as they slip in above Man 2 Man Meets Man Parrish who hold at No 4 (43,486) ahead of the Jets who move 9-5 (41,395) and Level 42 7-6 (40,018), and farewell to Curiosity Killed The Cat as they collapse 3-8 (37,621)

1- STAND BY ME- Ben E King (112,863)
2- WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN- Percy Sledge (73,576)
3- LIVE IT UP- Mental As Anything (53,839)
4- MALE STRIPPER- Man 2 man Meets Parrish (43,486)
5- CRUSH ON YOU- The Jets (41,395)
6- RUNNING IN THE FAMILY- Level 42 (40,018)
7- EVERYTHING I OWN- Boy George (37,689)
8- DOWN TO EARTH- Curiosity Killed The Cat (37,621)
9- THE GREAT PRETENDER- Freddie Mercury (37,196)
10- I GET THE SWEETEST FEELING- Jackie Wilson (34,782)

I don’t personally mind the ‘spoilers’ when they’re following on from conversation points that naturally occur in the thread, none of them have even slightly reduced my enjoyment of these threads. I think it’s difficult to class such things as spoilers exactly when we’re discussing things that have already happened such a long time ago.

I wouldn’t want to see people ruining what you’re putting in the next posts etc though as I appreciate it must take a lot of effort to put this together for everyone

Another old one in the top 10 this week then. I think I probably prefer Sweetest Feeling to his #1.

Don’t like either of the new ones from Boy George or Mr Mercury though, the former is particularly boring imo.

The only point that I would make on them is that I'm writing these as "of the moment" in 1987, there's loads more I could put in about "future" events that I don't. I know some don't want to know which positions tracks peak at (although it is easy enough to find that out if you want)- so i get that it is difficult but it's in the spirit of the thread to treat 1987 as "now".

I don't disagree- but there is a lot of public sympathy and goodwill toward him at this point after a pretty horrendous last 12 months for him as I note. It's probably a hit in part as a support to his cause, a little like Midge Ure's "If I Was" which was interpreted at the time as a thank you to him for the Band Aid project- rightly or wrongly.

I'll edit my post, I actually thought this was the 1996 thread and what I was mentioning was past
but was a vague comment about charts in general

not a fan of any of the newbies... or rather oldies biggrin.gif that Boy George track is so bad, that's all kinds of UB40 bad reggae cover bad

I understand that, but take that away and it’s a poor number 1 imo.

What a bizarre top 2!!!

I do like both but I can’t immediately think of another time when the top 2 were both old songs experiencing a resurgence

The current charts will probably take that as a challenge given how many decade plus old songs are in the current top 40!

(also technically Wham!/Mariah achieved this a few times but I guess that's a bit different x)

I notice the single cover of 'Male Stripper' has been removed from Imgur, they've become a little more puritanical with what uploads they allow recently (Troye Sivan's current album cover gets taken down from there as well for example) so I can guess what it looks like based on that and the song title tongue.gif

bizarre chart when you think about it
3 oldies from the past, 2 covers of oldies
a hit in AU from 85, a US hit from 86, a flop from 86
so basically only 2 proper 87 hits, Level 42 and Curiosity!

I don’t think it was that unusual for songs from 1986 from different countries to finally chart in 87 in the UK to be fair!

14TH MARCH

Even as late as Friday it all looked good for Ben E King’s chances of holding onto the top with “Stand By Me”, indeed the song ended up selling a respectable 67,813 copies, bringing its total to 417,095 as it rises to the top of the YTD list as well. However it was overtaken late in the week by Boy George who takes his debut solo single to No 1 enabling “Everything I Own” to become one of those rare tunes that has topped the charts in different decades. George scurries 7-1 selling 69,870 copies in the process, perhaps there is no such thing as bad publicity, it also marks George’s first appearance at the top since his stint on Band Aid though of course he did provide uncredited backing vocals on Feargal Sharkey's "A Good Heart" since then.

Surging 25-7 (45,356) is the second release from Mel & Kim who made the top 3 last time out with “Showin Out”, this time around “Respectable” is making much shorter work of becoming a hit as it makes the top 10 after a fortnight and is again penned by Stock Aitken & Waterman who are turning into something of Jolley & Swain for the late 80s.

Not much else new to report but the lull allows Jackie Wilson to power 10-3 (60,537) with Freddie Mercury chasing 9-4 (60,282) and Mental As Anything dip 3-5 (53,907) despite a sales increase. These are the best sales for the top 5 since Christmas 1985- perhaps the decline in sales has ended?

Four fallers further down, Percy Sledge falls 2-6 (52,326), The Jets descend 5-8 (38,573), Man 2 Man Meets Man Parish fall 4-9 (28,475) and Level 42 recede 6-10 (28,458).

1- EVERYTHING I OWN- Boy George (69,870)
2- STAND BY ME- Ben E King (67,813)
3- I GET THE SWEETEST FEELING- Jackie Wilson (60,537)
4- THE GREAT PRETENDER- Freddie Mercury (60,282)
5- LIVE IT UP- Mental As Anything (53,907)
6- WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN- Percy Sledge (52,326)
7- RESPECTABLE- Mel & Kim (45,356)
8- CRUSH ON YOU- The Jets (38,573)
9- MALE STRIPPER- Man 2 Man Meets Parrish (28,475)
10- RUNNING IN THE FAMILY- Level 42 (28,458)
