6th November 1971

It's a first and only number one for John Kongos and his largely-forgotten menacing Tokoloshe Man, still love those tribal drum beats mixed with loud electric guitars, and in at 5, highest new entry is the fab Labi Siffre and his gentle acoustic and gorgeous and still-loved It Must Be Love, as made even more famous by Madness in 1981 - their cover gave it more beats but kept the charm. Labi's still active on Twitter, social commentator and poet. New at 29, Jonathan King's Oogachaga adaptation of Hooked On A Feeling was a huge fave of mine, and I got a little miffed Blue Swede did a gutsier carbon-copy in 1974 that topped the US charts, being as they were unfamiliar with the original cover, so to speak.

Paul Williams has a nice climb in to the 40, Gilbert O' Sullivan gets his 4th retro chart hit at 60 with No Matter How I Try, though it was actually the first Gilbert song I heard back in the day. Tony Christie's future million-seller also enters, as Amarillo underwhelms the 1971 music buyer unaware of Peter Kay's comic pulling-power. I mean, I liked it and charted it at the time, but a 21st century number one? Fantasy time! I'd've picked almost any of the cooler records in the chart over the likelihood of old-fashioned Amarillo doing it! Mardi Gras grab a third chart entry, still a year ahead of their UK debut, and Betty Wright's huge US hit (and UK flop) Clean Up Woman spruces up the lower end 4 years ahead of HER UK chart debut.

9th November 1971 Wot I Liked Then

It's straight in at 1 for a record getting heavily plugged by Chart Show DJ Alan Freeman on his Pick Of The Pops show, just before he ran down the new entries into the top 30, and the whole top 20. Rescue Company No. 1 sank without trace but it was a great popmetal song, Life's Too Short (too bloomin' right) on RAK Records, my fave record label of the time. Slade sadly kept off the top spot with their classic UK chart-topper Coz I Luv You, and Labi Siffre debuting at 5 with the timeless It Must Be Love a few weeks ahead of charting. The Hermits climb into the top 10 with a song I just heard for the first time in 50 years. Errr, it's not great! Last week's Peter Noone record was much better.

Cher appeared on Top Of The Pops, leading to my mum speculating that it was Cher from Sonny & Cher, and me convinced it was a new band called Cher. Oops, mum was right! Suddenly it made sense! So, new in 10 with the classic Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves, still her best record amongst many close-calls. Cilla's new TV show theme, tarrah chuck, is in at 13, Something Tells Me that show will run for years, and so will Cilla, even though this is her final big hit ever. TV comic Benny Hill, with his naughty, boobs-obsessed low-brow, world-wide success show is in with one of his sporadic comedy songs, a Western parody featuring Cornish milkman Ernie, that is still endearing and amusing, at 16 - my little brother got the record for Xmas! Finally Gilbert O'Sullivan debuts with his old-fashioned piano plink-plonk No Matter How I Try, and Diana Ross' fab new track with the epic chorus, Surrender, sneaks in at 20.

13th November 1971 what I like that week now

Up to number one 10 years before Madness, It Must Be Love still sounding fab following its recent use in an ad, and me re-watching his Top Of The Pops appearance 50 years on. I still have memories of live appearances on the show, even though I saw them once only and never again. Labi made an impression. Straight in at 2, it's David & Jonathan cover from 1967 - Softly Whispering I Love You flopped - who were better known in 1971 as Rogers Cook & Greenaway, pop stars of Brotherhood Of Man, Blue Mink, Pipkins and now hit songwriters. They also enter at 40 with a Coca Cola-rewritten version of a previous song for The New Seekers, now getting world exposure on the famous advert showing young people holding hands across the world in multicultural harmony. It was quite the advertising revelation, given most adverts were just appalling at the time. SO bad, no exaggeration. The Congregation was also put together by the Rogers, a choral act in stark contrast to the blistering guitar, and gritty vocals of ex-Plastic Penny's Brian Keith. Still fabulous, despite Paul Young's less-enthusiastic cover.

Springwater go top 10, Al Green enters at 14 with his greatest record, Let's Stay Together, on course for his 2nd top 10 of 1971, and little rock combo debut the 8-minute non-single Stairway To Heaven, which had to wait for a hit cover from Far Corporation to chart in the UK. Even Rolf Harris beat Led Zep to it. Taken from Led Zep IV, as is Rock And Roll entering lower down the chart. It got no daytime airplay, so it was quite a few years before I got to hear the much-lauded epic.

At 34, a song so good that Prefab Sprout wrote a song about Faron Young, It's Four In The Morning is just Country at it's best, no further comment needed, a great song and performance, although it was still 7 or 8 months from the UK charts, it was out in the USA. As was the new Badfinger album, featuring forthcoming single Day After Day, a great record. New at 39. Marmalade grabbed a minor follow-up hit to Cousin Norman with Back On The Road, and debut at 69 3 years into their run, while Junior Walker has a message of love on Way Back Home, and The Hermits pop in much lower than their ex-lead vocalist is doing.

16th November 1971 What I liked this week then

It's a first week for T.Rex entering straight in at 1, their second chart-topper back in 1971, as Jeepster excites me instantly, loved the new glam sounding groove, and keeping off South African John Kongos from the top, who enters at 2 with his menacing tribal excitment, Tokoloshe Man. My charts were quite volatile, as I could get obsessed with new records quite quickly. Gilbert O'Sullivan gets a top 5 with No Matter How I Try, and Diana Ross follows-up I'm Still Waiting with Surrender up to 10. Not yet charting in the UK, I'm assuming I heard Kara Kara on a variety TV show, New World were always being featured on the likes of The Two Ronnies or Morecambe & Wise, and this was a catchy follow-up to the fab Tom Tom Turnaround. New at 18.

I do love reading these charts even though I only know the names and a lot pass me by. I mean when I look the songs up I know a lot of them but didn’t know who they were by. Lindisfarne ‘Fog In The Tyne’ is great, didn’t know it was so old, always though Gazza wrote it!

Aww thanks Steve, that's nice to hear smile.gif I'm still surprised by how many songs from before 1968 I know but didn't know I know, still discovering them from the 50's & 60's threads running right now! It's like rediscovering an old forgotten friend sometimes laugh.gif

Fog On The Tyne was pretty much an anthem by 1972 even though it wasn't a hit - Tynesiders were quite passionate about it, and it just sort of became known via Radio 1 plays. Gazza at least made it a hit 20 years on so good for him... smile.gif

20th November 1971

It's a first week on top for Plastic Penny plus some choral backing singers. More or less. Softly Whispering I Love You is a fab single, unique then and unique now. Sly & The family Stone go top 3 with the incredible Family Affair and top 30 with the follow-up Runnin' Away. In my charts of the time Runnin' Away peaked at 2 and Family Affair a bit lower down, but time has reversed the ratings. Al Green gets a second top 10, as Let's Stay Together climbs, and Don McLean makes the 10 too - with the next single, Vincent, not American Pie Part 1, the current single, which climbs to 19. Yet Pie peaked at 2 on reissue in my charts in 1991 - proving that love for tracks can ebb and flow with the years, for me.

Led Zep are top 20 with Rock classic Stairway To Heaven and Faron Young climbs fast to 20, setting up Robert Plant for his current repeat album success with Alison Krauss I like to think. Not that Faron was Bluegrass, he was pure Country, more violin than fiddle. Highest new entry is Elton John at 28, with non-UK-hit Tiny Dancer - a record I didn't really know until the 21st century when it took on a life of it's own to become one his biggest streaming and downloading catalogue tracks. The first single of Madman Across The Water, Levon, sneaks in at the bottom, pretty much have no recall of hearing it before.

New World get a 3rd single, as the Boy-Scout-sounding Kara Kara debuts, and another forgotten single - it never ever gets airplay anywhere, the lyrics a little on the naff side in these more cynical times, I suspect, but it was catchy, and New World were always on variety shows, along with fellow inoffensive family-appealing acts like The New Seekers. Elvis' cover of B.J. Thomas' I Just Can't Help Believing enters much lower than he did 50 years ago in my charts of the time. Just not that fussed by most Elvis 70's stuff these days.

Val Doonican covers Morning, quite well, and it's Irish-charm is still there, albeit old-time crooning, Bob Marley pops in with Why Should I, a 90's remix I know, but not this original version by The Wailers, Springwater's B side is decent and pops in, Carly Simon is full of Anticipation for a UK hit - but that's still a year away. Gerry Rafferty's debut in the chart is one I knew and liked, Can I Have My Money Back, heard it once or twice, and then nothing for decades - it's nothing like Baker Street, still 7 years away! Spoiler alert: Baker Street is the greatest record ever made. Just saying! Fame & Price follow-up Rosetta with Follow Me, another one I quite liked at the time, but never loved. That's not changed.

23rd November 1971 Wot I liked when I wuz 13 actual charts of the time

It's 2 weeks on top for Jeepster as T.Rex were my latest fave cool band and Diana Ross makes it 2 top 5's in a row with Surrender. Anne Murray had a lot of residual love from me for chart-topping Snowbird, a Singapore fave, so her new flop single Talk It Over In The Morning jumps in at 6 based on a couple of hearings. A little over-rated, I think, but hey I was 13 and never stopped loving Anne Murray (see Stewie & Brian in Family Guy, only 40 years earlier!). The Doors atmospheric classic Riders On The Storm enters at 16, their chart debut being their last hit single, while my chart extends to 30 and sees some re-entries.

New at 21, Soley Soley makes it 3 in a row for Middle Of The Road, their 3rd single following on from 2 huge chart-toppers and using the surname my grandma was using - though she never actually married her partner I found out years later. Mrs Soley was a name she adopted. Elvis is also back with a live cover version of a B.J.Thomas hit, at 22, and Isaac Hayes brilliant Shaft theme a modest 23. I never did see the film (not old enough) but Richard Roundtree was certainly a cool poster image. Springwater pop in at 28 with I Will Return, Phil Cordell's great instrumental has been all but forgotten these days, which is a great shame, cos it had a certain guitar majesty appeal to it.

27th November 1971

It's 2 weeks on top for The Congregation as Led Zep climb into the top 10 and Nilsson gets his 4th top 10 with Badfinger's histrionic song of loss, his awesome version of Without You in at 10. Accept no substitutes, no-one comes close to being as worthy as Harry. New at 31, a chart-topper for me in 1972 with the Tony Romeo song It's One Of Those Nights, it is The Partridge Family still having hits ahead of David Cassidy's forthcoming solo career. At 42, John Barry's second dong on the list with Shirley Bassey reprising another Bond Theme, the fab Diamonds Are Forever, my new fave Bond movie when I went to see it at the cinema in Lincoln. Great fun and great to have Sean Connery back.

In another quiet week for new entries The Jackson 5 sneek in one of their lesser singles, Sugar Daddy, Gladys Knight keeps the soul class coming with another song I don't know, and Marvin Gaye charts a 5 year old track I also have never heard.

Hi Steve, Benny Hill was topping the UK charts Xmas 1971 - I liked it but never loved it till the 90's re-issue when Benny Hill died, but my little brother bought the single, one of only a few singles I recall him buying or asking for - Elvis Presley Fun In Acapulco, Ernie, Long haired Lover From Liverpool and Teenage Rampage (the Sweet), plus some 50's rockabilly singles when he was going through that phase smile.gif

...and what I actually liked on 30th November 1971 as a 13-year-old, my actual chart of the time:

It's a brand new top 3 as Middle Of The Road enter on top for a hat-trick of number ones, and the one that sounds best 50 years later, Soley Soley. I loved them, and also I was a fan of Jonathan King bubblegum - new in at 2 his ooga chagga update of B.J.Thomas' US hit Hooked On A Feeling, later nicked wholesale by Blue Swede for a huge 1974 US chart-topper and subsequent immortality in Guardians Of The Galaxy. It never made the top 30, but Barry Ryan was back with a terrific record at 3 3 years after the brilliant epic Eloise topped my charts - Can't Let You Go is unfairly forgotten these days.

Cher hits a new peak of 4, Elvis gets yet another top 10 with another B.J. Thomas US hit song, that's 2 in the top 10, while The Congregation (with Brian Keith of Plastic Penny on lead vocal) enter at 15 with future Paul Young hit cover that's not a patch on the original fabness of Softly Whispering I Love You. Val Doonican says Morning at 19, also a cover, and Tony Christie debuts with future UK chart-topper Amarillo at 22 - it didn't make my top in 1971, though, nor the UK's, but hey presto a charity video and a million seller in 2005!

Petula Clark is back, with a cover of Yvonne Elliman's original Jesus Christ Superstar ballad, I Don't Know How To Love Him. She'd have to wait around 40 years to top my chart with new material though, Cut Copy did the trick. Also new in, Tom Jones petering out a bit with Till new at 30, though I did like it. I liked everything in my charts in those days, and quite a lot that didn't make my charts too.

1 ( NEW ) SOLEY SOLEY - Middle Of The Road
2 ( NEW ) HOOKED ON A FEELING - Jonathan King
3 ( NEW ) CAN’T LET YOU GO - Barry Ryan
4 ( 7 ) GYPSIES, TRAMPS & THIEVES - Cher
5 ( 2 ) LIFE’S TOO SHORT - Rescue Company No. 1
6 ( 1 ) JEEPSTER - T.Rex
7 ( 8 ) RUN BABY RUN (BACK INTO MY ARMS) - The Newbeats
8 ( 5 ) SURRENDER - Diana Ross
9 ( 22 ) I JUST CAN’T HELP BELIEVING - Elvis Presley
10 ( 6 ) TALK IT OVER IN THE MORNING - Anne Murray

11 ( 3 ) NO MATTER HOW I TRY - Gilbert O’Sullivan
12 ( 23 ) THEME FROM SHAFT - Isaac Hayes
13 ( 10 ) JOHNNY REGGAE - The Piglets
14 ( 11 ) TOKOLOSHE MAN - John Kongos

4th December 1971

It's up to the top spot for his 2nd number one for Nilsson, 2 years after Everybody's Talking, with his epic and definitive version of Without You as he gives a lesson in how to do a song justice: nobody has ever got anywhere near worthy as this version, not the Badfinger original, not Mariah Carey's warbling feeble chart-topper. This is how you interpret effectively. This is bad news for Sly, Al Green and Led Zep, all of whom deserve to be topping the chart this week - just too much competition! Faron Young , meanwhile, brings some country twang to the top 10.

Highest new entry is the fab Barry Ryan, 3 years on from his epic and definitive Eloise topping my chart, this time new at 19 with a Russ Ballard song, he of Argent just dropping out the top 20, and writer of many a fab pop single in the 70's and 80's: Can't Let You Go is a great romp and deserved to be a big hit, but wasn't. In at 28, a US band of Neil Young wannabees based in the UK for a while as their dads were stationed on US army bases. A Horse With No Name was unusual, and kicked off a great run of big singles - in the USA! The UK promptly remained largely disinterested after A Horse With No Name had dropped out the charts.

The Faces debut with Stay With Me at 54, though for Rod The Mod it's his 5th chart appearance in 4 various guises and combinations. This is the most rocking to date though. The Small Faces still in the band appear for the first time in 4 years. At 64, Petula Clark does a cover of the fab Yvonne Elliman Jesus Christ Superstar ballad, I Don't Know How To Love Him, bringing her run of hits to a close, bar a reissue and a remix of Downtown, until she tops my chart in the 2010's with Cut Copy Me, an amazing ballad, way better than this track.

At 71, the TV theme tune to Owen MD, and at 80 The Onedin Line TV theme tune. My mum loved The Onedin Line, and we had Owen MD on too, mostly cos there were only 2 channels to pick from so you had no choice. I didn't like either show much, but Sleepy Shores is quite lovely. There's a bit of Northern Soul from San Remo Golden Strings at 79, and new at 78 it's a debut for Jigsaw, and the soul-rock falsetto of Keeping My Head Above Water, a track I haven't heard since 1978-ish when they played my Uni in Lincoln, the first actual concert I attended. They had 2 UK hits, and an international smash with Sky High, but their best-known track is probably Who Do You Think You Are, Candlewick Green and Saint Etienne both covered it.

7th December 1971 Wot I Liked Then

It's Jonathan King on top with his BJ Thomas cover, and also the highest new entry with his 1920's ragtime style cover of ancient song The Sun Has Got His Hat On, giving him a hat-trick of chart hits (The Piglets are also JK on production/writing plus female singer, essentially, and these days it would be JK ft Unknown Singer). I also started to get really enthusiastic on my personal charts, doing 2 a week, so the only fair way to get a single chart out of 'em is to give chart points for each chart songs and then divide by 2 , hence a Top 32 this week.

The Congregation shoot up to 2, John Kongos to 5, Isaac Hayes to 7, and Gilbert to 9 for top 10 climbers. New entries include Argent at 17, that's songwriter Rod Argent of The Zombies plus singer/songwriter Russ Ballard on Pop Prog Rock that'll take 5 months to chart, but Hold Your Head Up is fab and Alan Freeman was plugging it weekly on his Pick Of The Pops pre-chart rundown show. New at 21, The Raiders minus Paul Revere cover a Joe South song, the fab Birds Of A Feather, a record I was loving and bought in the new year with birthday money cos I couldn't get it on tape from the radio. It was only played on a kids ITV pop TV show, probably Lift Off With Ayshea, along with Terry & Laurel - a record I literally heard once, loved, and then never heard of again until last week when I finally found out who the artist was and found it on youtube!

This also applies to future chart-toppers Chicory Tip, who appeared with a daft song about Onions and no hint of the next synthpop Giorgio Moroder sensational 45, Design (which is not on Youtube so I still havent heard it in 50 years), and probably Marmalade too, as they often did kids TV. The Tremeloes, another 60's leftover hitmaking band, were on Top Of The Pops with Too Late (To Be Saved), The New Seekers version of the Coca Cola jingle I'd Like to Buy The World A Coke also enters fairly lowly for The New Seekers, a fave band of the time, courtesy of songwriters Cook & Greenaway, also at 2 with The Congregation. Finally The Supremes & The Four Tops are back duetting again with an OK track, You Gotta Have Love, but it's no Nathan Jones, and it's no Simple Game!

So much to love here with the likes of Slade in there with the epic ‘Coz I Love You’ 2 Decembers before the final and arguably biggest legacy ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’. Also would love to have seen Led Zepplin on the top, great track!

Thanks Steve, and yes agree about those tracks, when it comes to 1971/72 most of the records that didn't top my charts that i loved back then, and even in these retro charts, have topped my charts in the decades since - including Stairway To Heaven. When the best are competing against the best everything under-performs except the one on top! biggrin.gif

11th December 1971

It's straight in at 1 for the xmas classic out in America and the rest of the world, John & Yoko's Phil Spector produced gospel plea to end war, and the first Xmas record I bought in December 1972 when it belatedly came out in the UK, as per usual in 1971 Apple making crappy decisions on UK single releases. I loved it then, I love it now, and it's back in the UK top 40 yet again for the zillionth time 50 years later, thanks to streaming and trickle itune sales. that forces fellow classics from Nilsson and Led Zep to line-up at 2 and 3, while Elton John's also-not-a-single Tiny Dancer goes top 10, his 3rd.

Sequoia enter at 63 with the totally forgotten Mississippi Lady, one I thought was a goodie at the time, while The Detroit Emeralds are back with You Want It You Got It, a 1973 UK hit 2 years late. Jonathan King gets his 3rd track on the chart, if you count The Piglets as his (and I do, going by modern record credits by record writer/arranger/producers with guest vocalists), as the Noel Coward-sounding old standard The Sun Has Got His Hat On gets the whimsical cover treatment under another pseudonym, finding Nemo at 71. Another I liked a lot at the time. Meanwhile The Jackson 5 replace themselves on the chart with Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, another one a year ahead of a UK release, at 75.

Wings have a new album out, Paul McCartney's new touring band with Linda & Denny Laine, formerly of The Moody Blues version 1 & Say You Don't Mind solo single. Tomorrow is on the album, and was later covered by David Cassidy in 1975, a song I always liked a lot, new at 76. At 78, a track that entered my personal chart at 4 following a kids pop TV slot, Lift Off With Ayshea I think, and one which has taken me exactly 50 years to hear for a second time and find out who the artist is. Terry & Laurel, apparently! It's OK, but they must have done a great performance! At 79, a record my younger brother recorded onto his brand new cassette player, Puck Wudgie by Charlie Drake. It's catchy, and Charlie Drake was a huge kids draw in the 60's. Finally, also on Lift Off, Chicory Tip debut with a bit of nonsense - a song about Onions. Enough to make you cry when you consider their next single, and debut hit....

14th December 1971 my chart of the time

It's 2 weeks on top for Jonathan King as The Raiders take their fab Birds Of A Feather to 4, and The New Seekers make it 3 top 10's in a row. Terry & Laurel go up to 11, Design to 17, and Sequoia are new at 20 with the catchy Mississippi Lady, all 3 of which will create a huge "What? Who?" from everyone in the world except relatives of those involved. Johnny Pearson brings Sleepy Shores into the chart, the Owen MD TV theme tune, but my TV tastes were more Morecambe & Wise, Up Pompeii, Monty Python when it came to UK non-music shows. Or Star Trek series 3 re-runs (all new to me, though), Alias Smith & Jones, McMillan & Wife for US shows. I used to cut Morecambe & Wise gags out of the Radio Times: Pic of Ernie to Eric in Ancient Egypt with Glenda Jackson, "Have you got the scrolls?" Eric: "No, it's just the way I'm walking". Classic.

18th December 1971

It's 2 weeks on top for the Xmas classic from John & Yoko, including the whispered message to their 2 kids (from different relationships) at the intro, missing these days from the revamped version that charts every year (booooo, originals are best!), while 50 years ago the mighty Hunky Dory is released to little notice, David Bowie still being 6 months away from Glam immortality, so in at 3 it's the epic Life On Mars, 18 months ahead of it being released as a single and charting, Changes at 24 (a flop single, criminally), and Oh You Pretty Things! at 35, following where Peter Noone had already been. Badfinger go top 20 for a 3rd time, while new entries include The Lion Sleeps Tonight at 69, 10 years ahead of Tight Fit. Robert John's great falsetto hit with this US smash in 1972, but it took him 7 years to get a UK hit, with the fab Sad Eyes.

Cat Stevens is back, with his hymn cover, the sweet Morning Has Broken at 70, Dutch Mouth and MacNeal were charting in the Netherlands (and soon in the USA too) with the UK flop How Do You Do (I blame Radio 1 not playing it), and they had to wait over 2 years and Eurovision before they got their hit. Middle Of The Road are into single 4 in Italy, a few months ahead of the UK, still, with Sacremento, while Nancy & Lee return with Down From Dover, quirky and cool as ever. Glen Campbell is back in full-on country-pop anthem and Oklahoma Sunday Morning, while B.J. Arnau's I want To Go Back There Again is one I liked at the time.

21st December 1971 my charts of that week then

It's The New Seekers topping the Xmas chart, as they get their 2nd chart-topper of 1971 with the Coke jingle, holding off the much better Congregation track at 2 which had topped my chart in what would have been called "mid-weeks" around this time when I was virtually doing 2 or 3 a week. Benny Hill's actual xmas number one is up to 8, Elvis gets his 4th or 5th top 10 of the year, and Melanie is the highest new entry at 11 with the very catchy Brand New Key.

25th December 1971

It's up to the top spot for David Bowie over 2 years since Space Oddity became his first retro chart-topper, Life On Mars notable for me not having heard of it until it became a single in 1973 2 albums later than Hunky Dory when Bowie could sell anything - even The Laughing Gnome. Changes I was aware of (at 11), and Oh You Pretty Things I got to see on The Old Grey Whistle Test after the event. America are at 4 with A Horse With No Name, Bassey up to 12 with classic Bond, and highest new entry is Greyhound and their delicious reggae take on a song that never sounds bad - Moon River is just great in any version, but I especially liked this one, new at 22 and their 2nd top 40 of 1971.

Just behind, at 24, The Supremes keep 'em coming, Floy Joy giving all the gals a go at vocals, but especially the late Mary Wilson for a change, clearly enjoying not being La Ross' underling. Sammy Davis Jr releases his whopping 1972 US hit cover of The Candy Man (from Willy Wonka), new at 78, Anne Murray gets another sweet countrypop ditty with Cotton Jenny at 79, and at 80 it's Carole King with her original version of a song Carpenters would make famous in 1972.

28th December 1971 chart of the time

It's 2 weeks on top for The New Seekers on my last chart of 1971 and into the New Year and my 14th birthday, Melanie gets a top 10 with Brand New Key, and The former Rocking Berries get a debut with a novelty record I took a fancy too after seeing on Lift Off With Ayshea that week, The King (Don't Be Cruel) was bascially an impersonation of Elvis doing his hit of the 50's interrupted by impersonations of celebrities of the day. Given one of the impersonations was Jimmy Saville it's unbroadcastable these days, but it tickled 13-year-old me enough to buy the record.

At 13, and likely out at the cinema, Sean Connery was back as Bond and a real blockbuster that became one of my all-time fave films of the time, and it had Shirley Bassey back with the fab theme tune to make sure the flop of the George Lazenby film wasn't repeated. Mac and Katie Kissoon, brother & sister who'd had a US hit with Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, debut with I've Found My Freedom, another Lift Off track I haven't heard for 50 years since, so that one will be interesting if it's on Youtube. They would eventually have a proper hit, though, in 3 years time.

Neil Reid sneaks in with a record I found overly-sentimental, but he did give a great vocal performance on Mother Of Mine. Madre Mia! Deep Purple also pop in with Fireball, a frantic hard rock track that did grow on me. i see it as a Motorhead template. Finally, Cat Stevens is back with the hymn, Morning Has Broken, a bit wet for the charts I thought at the time, but it's quite sweet.
