43. DO ME WRONG- MEL BLATT (17,400)

PEAK POSITION: 18
WKS ON CHART: 3
YEAR: 2003

Talking of argumentative girlgroups and working with Cameron McVey here’s Melanie Blatt. She was a rather tentative solo star featuring on releases by Outsidaz and Artful Dodger before venturing forth on this track. Its poor performance led to the album being cancelled and ultimately her return to the All Saints fold within 3 years.

42. SORRY- BEN ADAMS (18,600)

PEAK POSITION: 18
WKS ON CHART: 3
YEAR: 2005

Our only former A1 star on the list is predictably the lead singer of the outfit. He was always a rather likeable guy personality wise but even that couldn’t save this being in and out of the charts quicker than was decent. He went on to take part in “Celebrity Big Brother” and co-write Lisa Scott-Lee’s fabled “Electricity”- so yeah.

41. LIPSTICK- ALESHA (19,200)

PEAK POSITION: 14
WKS ON CHART: 4
YEAR: 2006

Ok so maybe classing Mis-Teeq as a girl group is a bit far but I was struggling! Anyway the clear star of the group was always odds on favourite to have a solo career so there was collective surprise when it didn’t go well at all leading to her being dropped in 2007. That coincided with her break up with husband Harvey after a very public affair with Javine Hylton, thankfully winning “Strictly” in 2007 revived her fortunes and gave her a decent pop career after all before going into judging on BGT.

Bought all three of those last entries. With hindsight I have to say Mel's solo stuff is probably the material I revisit least, of all of All Saints although 'Do Me Wrong' was a fine track - produced by Xenomania too, no less.

I do have a copy of Ben Adams' unreleased solo album "It's Brutal Out There" knocking about somewhere. It's an utterly bonkers record - kind of the missing link between Justin Timberlake and Prince.

Loved 'Lipstick'. Criminal really that it took going on Strictly (not that that was necessarily a bad thing mind) for the wider public to wake up to what a talent she was as a solo artist!

40. STRAIGHT UP NO BENDS- BRIAN HARVEY (19,800)

PEAK POSITION: 26
WKS ON CHART: 2
YEAR: 2001

He had it all in the 90s really didn’t he? Lead singer in a top selling boyband and a TV actress Girlfriend meaning they were constant tabloid fodder. But Harvey’s firing from East 17 after drug revelations signaled the end of the heydays, he returned to E-17 in 1998 but when that didn’t pan out he tried a solo career first appearing on a Truesteppers single before going truly solo.

I bought 2 copies of this. I remember listening to the chart for it and hearing it flop in at 18 and the chart reader reading out an angry text by someone who could not believe it had flopped, calling it song of the year.

She needed o do more like the beautiful 24/7. Yes DMW and See Me are fine songs, but a litle dull and more like elevator music tbh.

24/7 is the All Saints song, after Black Coffee and a couple on S&S I go back to most.

I would not have believed when she released Do Me Wrong that she would be back in All Saints 3 years later!! If I knew that I wouldn't have been so bothered by her flopping.

39. HELP ME- NICK CARTER (20,100)

PEAK POSITION: 17
WKS ON CHART: 3
YEAR: 2002

Our only former Backstreet Boyer on the list is the most photogenic (Probably). He was still only 22 when the Backstreet Boys went on their first hiatus and was first to set out solo. This was a reasonable hit in Europe where the group had always charted well but it seems we were lukewarm at best.

38. INSATIABLE- NADINE COYLE (20,200)

PEAK POSITION: 26
WKS ON CHART: 2
YEAR: 2010

Nurdine’s solo launch came courtesy of this single which has the hand of Guy Chambers in its composition not that that helped it ultimately. Perhaps damage was done by her association with Tesco (who had exclusive rights to sell the album) or by her refusal to appear on the X Factor to promote it probably as Cheryl was a judge at the time but whatever it was it spoiled the party. Still sold more than “Threads” though, so you know……

Oh, Tesco Nadine!!

The problem was she was being torn down by the press at the time for the usual things they attack female pop stars for - living in the U.S, being 'too thin', not being too keen on being in the band that made her famous, a perception she was 'stuck up' because of living in US/ not being in band, and because they were pushing the Chezza as the breakout star narrative.

Who'da thought at the beginning of GA that Nadine would be the least successful solo star and Chezza would be the most -- by far and even bigger than thr band itself, just like Robbie!!

37. DOWN DOWN DOWN- CHARLIE SIMPSON (23,800)

PEAK POSITION: 65
WKS ON CHART: 2
YEAR: 2011

It was Simpson who called time on Busted in late 2004 to pursue his desire to be a serious rockstar. Whilst it brought him some critical acclaim it lost him any existing fans from his pop days. Fightstar also went on hiatus in 2010 and Simpson ventured out on his own with this single which only impressed us for a fortnight it would seem!

36. SOME GIRLS (DANCE WITH WOMAN)/ BLOWIN ME UP (WITH HER LOVE)- JC CHASEZ (31,200)

PEAK POSITION: 13
WKS ON CHART: 6
YEAR: 2004

Never destined to be a major solo star, Chasez can at least claim to be the only former member of N*Sync to have a top 20 single aside from Timberlake. Dallas Austin co-writes here with Chasez and also stars in the promo for “Blowin Me Up”.

35. WOMAN IN LOVE/ I GET THE SWEETEST FEELING- LIZ MCLARNON (32,000)

PEAK POSITION: 5
WKS ON CHART: 5
YEAR: 2006

What better way to launch your solo career and show Kerry Katona you were the talented one than releasing two covers? Certainly McLarnon did, “Sweetest Feeling” was featured on an advert for Lenor at the time, which tells you all you need to know really.

I really liked Alesha's output before strictly. Knock Down was much better than Lipstick though, but by that point no one seemed to care.

Also quite enjoyed Insatiable. The Tesco exclusive offer didn't do Nadine no favours.

Brian Harvey biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I literally can't take him seriously after that incident with the baked potato.

Did like Nadine's first album but will reciprocate that she was on the receiving end of a press/media hate campaign on account of not being Cheryl. Regardless I think 'Insatiable' wasn't a good first lead single, far stronger material that could've launched her solo ventures on the album. Still hopefully she'll have more luck with her new stuff when that comes out later this year.

Loved JC Chasez's solo album. All spiky and fabulously electronic. Loved his single he did with Basement Jaxx as well. I do love Liz McClarnon but that one single she released was fairly MOR to be honest. Still, least she did better than poor old Jenny Frost...

My infamous tweet where I said 'Insatiable' was the 'biggest flop ever' to Dan Wooton.

Brian Harvey blamed gorging on jacket potatoes for his car crash when he fell under the wheels of his Mercedes.

As for MC Harvey he was getting frothed by Poundland Javine. What a prick on cheating on Alesha for that thing back in 2006. He must be realising what he has missed out on.

34. BLOCK PARTY- LISA “LEFT EYE” LOPES (34,800)

PEAK POSITION: 16
WKS ON CHART: 4
YEAR: 2001

Released just 7 months before her death in 2002, Lopes’ only UK solo single sampled Earth Wind & Fire’s “Drum Song”. It was a slight disappointment, chart wise, after the perfect start with a guest spot on Mel C’s “Never Be The Same Again”.
