Chart Commentary

The slowest burning #1 of the year so far, American boyband Why Don't We jump up five spaces to claim their first #1 single with Trust Fund Baby. The song is on its fifth week in the chart, meaning it's the slowest climb to the top in 2018, and the slowest since Avicii and Rita Ora's Lonely Together hit #1 on its eighth week in October last year. Jonah, Corbyn, Daniel, Jack and Zach see a huge surge across both the singles and albums charts, thanks partly to the release of the Trust Fund Baby music video. I've also managed to secure a ticket to see them in London this year, which I am very excited for!

Trust Fund Baby was co-written by Ed Sheeran and produced by Steve Mac, and is the first of three Why Don't We songs in this week's chart. Their first hit, These Girls, originally a #40 hit last year, re-enters at #10. Interestingly, the original mix of These Girls has been replaced on Spotify by a version with updated production, and it pays off for me as I prefer this version! Just three spots below, Boomerang is a new entry - a track from their recent Invitation EP, which climbs to #1 on the album chart this week, dislodging Camila Cabello's debut album after a hefty 8 weeks at the top (joint second for most consecutive weeks at #1).

Why Don't We
2017 10 These Girls | 1 | 40-x-10-... (2+ non-consecutive weeks)
2018 01 Trust Fund Baby | 2 | 8-15-14-6-1-... (5+ weeks)
2018 13 Boomerang | AT | 13-... (1+ weeks)

Birthday #1s
2012 Lucie Silvas - Reset
2013 Lucie Silvas - Happy
2014 Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX - Fancy
2015 Conor Maynard - Talking About
2016 Frans - If I Were Sorry
2017 Benjamin - Bad Luck Love
2018 Why Don't We - Trust Fund Baby

We actually have an all-boyband top 3 this week (as well as a boyband member's debut solo single at #5). 5 Seconds of Summer drop one place to #2 with their first #1 single Want You Back, and this week's highest new entry is at #3. Spanish DJ Danny Avila released his debut major label single last week, teaming up with The Vamps and Machine Gun Kelly. Too Good to Be True is new at #3, the first hit for Danny and the highest position thus far for Machine Gun Kelly, but it's disappointing for The Vamps. Previously they've had thirteen #1 singles, meaning each and every one of their previous singles has hit the top spot. Too Good to Be True is therefore their first single so far not to be #1. Of course, it could climb up, but judging by their recent hits, its debut week was likely its best chance. In terms of the song, I think it's great, but Machine Gun Kelly is actually the damaging factor as I'm not really a fan of him. Without him on the song, I think it could've been more of a #1 contender (although unlikely, as Trust Fund Baby was so far ahead of the pack).

The third and final new song in this week's top 10 comes from American singer Katie Garfield. Her first chart hit Gallows has been a slow burner, considering I first heard it in August last year during an episode of Teen Wolf. While I liked it, I didn't think to check it out at the time and I subsequently forgot about it. Upon rewatching after I received the DVD at Christmas, Gallows entered my chart for the first time in week 1 of 2018 and peaked at #29. Following another recent rewatch, the song re-entered again and for the second week, it's the highest climber, jumping 20 spots up to #7. It's the second song to have charted off the back of Teen Wolf, with Cheat Codes and Evan Gartner scoring a #5 hit with Adventure.

I checked it out a few weeks ago but forgot to chart it, so let's say it's been on pre-order in my chart drama.gif laugh.gif It's a fabulous album, some really great country pop songs on there (and I love how Teen Wolf's Shelley Hennig is in the video for I Could Use a Love Song kink.gif)

Hey Joseph!
I just recently checked out "Trust Fund Baby" and "Too Good To Be True", both are great songs, so I'm glad that they're in your chart in the top 3!
Also great to see Cheat Codes debut and from your album charts I definitly need to check out Maren Morris's album, since I really like "The Middle", where she was featured in!
Great chart overall!
