Chart Commentary



Although there's no change in the top 2 this week, we still see four new songs entering the top 10. Leading the way is this week's highest new entry, courtesy of Jason Derulo's new single Goodbye. Instantly, Goodbye matches his highest peak as a lead artist, entering at #3 where Swalla climbed to and peaked at last year, although his overall highest comes from Secret Love Song, his Little Mix collaboration, which climbed to #1 for two weeks. Goodbye is a collaboration with David Guetta, who reaches his highest position since his own #1 hit Shed a Light at the end of 2016. The song also features Nicki Minaj, who's at her highest position since last year's huge #2 Swish Swish, and Willy William, who outpeaks his only prior hit, Mi Gente (#12). It's Derulo's third top 10, Guetta's seventh and Nicki's 14th.

This week's highest climber vaults up a huge 34 places to #6, giving AZTX, a DJ, his very first top 10. The song, Karma, is only on my radar because of its featured vocalist though. It features Luke Friend, my favourite on series 10 of The X Factor and the owner of two #1s in my chart as well as a third top 10 hit. Most notable is his only UK top 40 hit, Hole in My Heart, which was one of my top 10 songs of 2015. However, he's not been seen in my chart since then. Karma is somewhat a surprise hit, initially giving me a lukewarm impression (hence the quiet #40 debut last week), but it's clicked in a big way and earns its top 10 spot.

American country star Hunter Hayes has one of the best track records in my chart. He was unstoppable throughout 2014, notching up a huge four #1s within the calendar year (and three within a month!). He's continued to build up a run of hits ever since, although in recent years his visits to the top 10 have been more of an exception than the rule. Nevertheless, he notches up a second top 10 hit of 2018 this week, as One Shot follows his Catherine McGrath collaboration Don't Let Me Forget into the top tier. It's his first top 10 as a lead artist since Rescue made #3 just over a year ago.

As former members of The Tide, Drew Dirksen and Levi Jones were bound to get my attention with their solo project O.D.L, particularly as they were my favourite two members (never forget my relentless campaign to get my #1 fave Levi to follow me on Twitter x). I attended their concert in March before they had even released any music as a duo, and really enjoyed all of the new songs, so it makes sense that their second single Won't Forget follows the first, Next to Me, into the top 10. Next to Me made it to #8 last month, while Won't Forget debuts this week at #10, adding to the four top 10s they achieved with The Tide.

On Friday 24th and Saturday 25th August, I attended Britney Spears' Piece of Me live tour. It was my first time seeing her live, and seeing as she is one of my top 5 all-time favourite artists, I was beyond excited to attend both nights. I went on my own on Friday night to see Britney, with Pitbull supporting, and it was incredible. The atmosphere was amazing despite my seat being right near the top of the O2 Arena and just about every song popped off. It was even better going on Saturday night with Jahq, as we had floor seats with an amazing view. As a result, Britney sees four of her classics enter my top 40 for the first time (all of them pre-date my chart) - (You Drive Me) Crazy at #23, Till the World Ends at #28, Stronger at #30, and my personal favourite Toxic at #39 (the others benefit more from the huge impact of the tour). Pitbull sees his own classic, Give Me Everything, enter for the first time at #36 (giving Nayer a chart debut *_*). Britney' Singles Collection re-enters at #2 to reflect the huge amount of Britney listening I've done this week, while Pitbull's Greatest Hits enters for the first time at #5.

Soaring to a #1 debut thanks to the early arrival of my CD copy, Troye Sivan's Bloom charts at #1 with relative ease despite my album chart being busier than it's ever been. Only one of last week's top 5 remains, as Ariana slips 1-3 with Sweetener. Troye's album would likely have debuted lower if it wasn't for my CD coming on Thursday, giving me an extra day to spam it to death. However, despite Troye's dominance this week, it's in question as to whether he'll keep it next week as Why Don't We's album 8 Letters also came out on Friday (31st). It enters at #6 this week, suffering from less time to impact, but with its first full week, it'll be a battle to the death next week between them and Troye for the top in my biggest album top 2 in years. Elsewhere, Lucie Silvas debuts at #4 with new album E.G.O. It's a little below what would usually be expected of a new Lucie album but is nevertheless a good listen with some brilliant lyrics throughout.

In the singles chart, we see new peaks for Lauv and Freya Ridings, as well as a debut for Bastille.

Hi Joseph!

Heard a clip of that 'Goodbye' song - the 'Time to Say Goodbye' melody snatching sort-of works but some of the lyrics are a little cringey laugh.gif At least it's better than Tip Toe or Swalla.

One Shot... didn't wow me as much as Hayes' other more recent stuff - I like his more country-esque sound and this doesn't flow as well for me.

Enjoying the new Marshmello/Bastille song - really growing on me, hope it can be a Top 10 hit soon biggrin.gif

Listening to the new Luke Friend song as well - I'd forgotten what he'd sounded like but this is sounding nice! Could certainly be a grower.

me reading this chart for the first time: have you seriously never charted Give Me Everything before?

me five minutes later: oh wait your chart didn't start in 2011

american charts got me f*cked up

yay at a lot of these songs tho! Goodbye is a bit of a mess but it somehow works, when JDR gets it right, it's just so right biggrin.gif Marshmello is also a really good shout!
