Cher recently announced that she's recorded an album of ABBA covers, following her role in the new Mamma Mia prequel/sequel in which she covers 'Fernando'.

Now, it seems she's just announced the tracking list on Twitter:

QUOTE
SONGS
1.WATERLOO
2.GIMME,GIMME
3.DANCING👑
4.CHIQUITITTA
5. NAME OF THE GAME
6.MOMMA MIA
7. ONE OF US
8.WINNER TAKES IT ALL
9.SOS
10.⁉️

She also responded "SEPT" to the tweet, presumably the release date.

Are you down for this? Any ideas about track 10? A brand new song where Cher and ABBA duet? ohmy.gif

Posted by: Regina 25th July 2018, 11:01 PM

I think September was confirmed a while ago which is good.

She's listed some of my fave ABBA songs which is fab wub.gif gone for most of the classics which was expected but i kinda want a few oddities. Gimme Eagle or When All Is Said And Done.

I assume the last one is either gonna be Fernando or maybe a full solo Super Trouper.

So ready for this - the gayest pop album ever drama.gif

Posted by: Liаm 25th July 2018, 11:12 PM

Slightly disappointing it'll probably be karaoke versions of the same old Abba songs, but I'm still here for this gay apocalypse.

Posted by: Regina 25th July 2018, 11:32 PM

She's said it'll be a mix of the original plus her own take, so it will be her own takes rather than straight covers.

She’s knows better than to not put a dance beat behind at least a few of them to keep the gays happy wub.gif

I would’ve thought that Fernando would be on here but maybe she realises that everyone who buys this album will already have the Mamma Mia soundtrack tongue.gif

Posted by: liamk97 26th July 2018, 09:40 AM

Didn't even notice 'Fernando' wasn't on the tracking list tbh, I just took it for granted that it was!

Surely the last track is something other than 'Fernando' though, otherwise what would be the point in keeping it a secret?

I'd say it is Fernando, but they are just waiting on clearance from the studio

Lets not forget she put You Haven't Seen The Last Of Me on Closer to the Truth a good 4 years after it was released and put on the Burlesque soundtrack.

Rumours flying that the ABBA girls will be on track 10. *.*

This actually fills me with nightmares.

I'm quite PARTIAL to her HONKING all over Fernando so will give this a whirl. I'd have liked at least one or two LESSER KNOWN tracks but I guess she needs to pay for the next facelift.

Brutal! laugh.gif Honking!

Posted by: Spiceboy 29th July 2018, 05:26 PM

I wasn’t really a fan of her versions of Fernando or super trooper, she doesn’t have voice that the girls had. That’s not a diss at her at all she has a great voice but it’s quite deep while hey had very seeet voices. Honking was used above sounds right lol.

This covers album may perform reasonable ok forCher.
Just last week she achieved her first top 100 entry for some time with Fernando.

I Hope You Find It went top 40 in 2013 and that was her las tmain single release so I dont get your point.

Posted by: ___∆___ 1st August 2018, 04:19 PM

I was expecting Fernando to be the runaway success from the film tbh but I do think the album will be a success for her - she’s releasing it in Q4 and the contents appeal to her largely gay fan base, would be surprised if it didn’t go Gold.

Posted by: Qween 1st August 2018, 06:31 PM

All she needs is a few decent promo slots, it'll be an easy mothers gift for Christmas (and probably GAYZ too). I'm fairly sure at this stage it's going to karaoke all the way but it's still going to be interesting.

Yes! I woulda liked half an half. Half the album to be the obvious ones, and the other half to be not so obvious gems. I like that you put When All Is Said And Done - that's the first one I searched for and wished for on the tracklist.
If it had been half an half, I'd want that album immediately. As it is, and there's so many of her albums that I've not yet got - I'll just add this to the list, to get...whenever.

Gimme, Gimme, Gimme is on Spotify. It's ok, pretty faithful to the original. I just love the original so much I find it a bit karaoke. Not sure what I'm going to make of this album tbh.

Guessing the album is called Dancing Queen, this is the cover that's attached to it.

Posted by: ___∆___ 9th August 2018, 04:00 PM

Love the album cover and the homage to Agnetha and Frida.

Listening to Gimme, Gimme, Gimme now and i LOVE it! Also DQ is really all the album could be called tbh. Can’t wait for the album - it’s total fun and for the gays cheer.gif

This is so trashy and camp, I love it! I'm going to be in my element if I hear this on a night out.

I love how emphasised that famous melody is; the original is of course fabulous but it feels so much more punchy and pronounced here, much like how it was when Madonna sampled.

From Vanity Fair:

QUOTE
Cher will release “Dancing Queen,” a new album of Abba covers, on September 28, Warner Bros. Records announced today.

The singer and actress — who has won Oscar, Emmy and Grammy Awards — was inspired to record the album following her performance in the recently-released hit film, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” according to the announcement.

“I’ve always liked Abba and saw the original ‘Mamma Mia’ musical on Broadway three times,” Cher said. “After filming ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,’ I was reminded again of what great and timeless songs they wrote and started thinking ‘why not do an album of their music?’ The songs were harder to sing than I imagined but I’m so happy with how the music came out. I’m really excited for people to hear it. It’s a perfect time.”

The album was recorded and produced in London and Los Angeles with Cher’s longtime collaborator Mark Taylor, who previously produced Cher’s global hit single “Believe.” The tracklist appears below.

Cher is scheduled to be awarded a Kennedy Center Honor on December 2 in Washington DC. She is also a co-producer of the “The Cher Show,” the upcoming Broadway musical opening on December 3, and will be touring Australia and New Zealand in September. She is currently performing a residency at MGM Resorts in Las Vegas.

“Dancing Queen” tracklisting:

1. Dancing Queen
2. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)
3. The Name Of The Game
4. SOS
5. Waterloo
6. Mamma Mia
7. Chiquitita
8. Fernando
9. The Winner Takes It All
10. One Of Us

Seems like they were waiting for the rights to use 'Fernando' as that is now appearing as the missing track.

'SOS' sticks more to the original, just with a little more sparkle, but her version of 'Gimme' is Cher to a tee.

Posted by: slowdown73 24th August 2018, 12:39 AM

I love Cher but the release just doesn’t appeal to me. Doing an album of covers is fine but why not be a bit more creative and choose less well known tracks and reinvent the style of the track instead of just copying the original.

It’s an extra special day on The Ellen Show, because the incomparable CHER is here! The Goddess of Pop has had an illustrious career, and she’s inspired many singers, dancers, and performers along the way. Cher has truly done it all, from her early singing days to huge hits like “Believe,” to major achievements in film and on stage! Not only is she a talented performer, she has used her voice to become an important figure in social activism and speaking out against injustice. Cher stops by the show today to catch up with Ellen and to talk about her latest film, “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!” She'll perform the classic ABBA song, “SOS” from her upcoming ABBA tribute album, “Dancing Queen”! She's always been open that she's not a "Cher fan" but she does it with humour and I like that about her.

Closer to the Truth is the only album I've listened to in its entirety and there's a great balance of bangers and ballads. 'Dressed to Kill', 'Lovers Forever', 'Favourite Scars' and 'I Hope You Find It' are all favourites of mine.

Cher's been doing the rounds of promo recently, including a (mimed) live performance of 'SOS' on Ellen:

Really liked this interview too:

Yeah, she seems very aware that she is a voice and very much a ‘pop-puppet’. She gets given the songs, spends some time recording, and pops out the music. She obviously doesn’t give a shit whether she likes the music or not, she (and the label) just want the dollar.

To me, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, as long as I like the music from people like this, that’s all I care about. laugh.gif

Excuse me, but you clearly don't know ©her. blink.gif

She is VERY much involved in everything she does. She won't record a song she doesn't like. She didn't finish recording 'Closer to the Truth' until she liked the final result. She fought for 'You Haven't Seen the Last of Me' to be included in 'Burlesque'. She re-did her vocals for 'Dancing Queen' in London because she wasn't satisfied with the early takes done in LA. She dictated how Believe would sound.

'One of Us' now available:

Really liking that! I was expecting it to suddenly break into a disco floorfiller but I'm glad she kept it stripped throughout. There's a great vulnerability to her voice which makes for any power she might be lacking.

Album out next Friday and I'm so ready!

I like it! Just not that fade out

Posted by: Voodoo 22nd September 2018, 02:51 PM

I like the music video. I think it's absolutely brilliant. It is very clever. The message is so emotional & powerful. The director did a great, great job. It features women of all ages, colors, races & a transsexual. Women helping a young girl who is lost. Betty Who (the tall blonde girl) is so Agnetha-alike. Trace Lysette is beautiful (had no idea she was a trans-woman). Lauren Weedman was so great in HBO's Looking. She's mesmerizing in the video. The younger girls are equally interesting & beautiful. Even picking Rumer Willis is an interesting pick.

It has a lot in it: feminism, an empowerment message, meaning, gay wink, fashion, a huge tribute to ABBA (the shots, the lights, the clothes - watch the original ABBA video). It's retro and yet absolutely current. The only thing missing is Cher herself. wub.gif

I can see that working tbh. The structure and pacing of the original seems to lend itself well to a bit of a disco beat but whilst still keeping the emotion of the song.

For One of Us, the mood is set so well and breaking into a dance song like I thought would have been really jarring.

Posted by: Crazy Chris 27th September 2018, 03:00 PM

No.1 best selling CD on Amazon. May even buy it myself.

Posted by: liamk97 28th September 2018, 12:17 AM

Just completed my listen of the album. A lot of people are going to think this is very karaoke but, whilst they're not far wrong, it would be unfair to just dismiss the album. The songs do stick closely to the originals but they all have that extra pizzazz and shine; so joyful and fun, making you want to get up and party. What's most notable about the album is how surprisingly strong Cher's voice is. There is, of course, traces of vocoder and perhaps Cher doesn't have the most powerful voice, but for the most part the vocals are clear, she knows how to use her voice well and it allows her to bring her own touch to the songs.

The last two are highlights for me. 'The Winner Takes It All' sounds exactly like I thought and hoped it would and sounds absolutely glorious because of it and 'One of Us' gives us some beautiful vulnerability and emotion. 'Gimme' also remains a banger which goes off when played on nights out.

Posted by: PaulM1983 28th September 2018, 11:13 AM

I wouldn't say it was at all surprising that Cher's voice sounds strong. She has a very powerful voice and has always been able to use it well. She's an extremely underrated vocalist, I suspect purely because of her use of vocoder effects, which makes people think she can't sound good on her own.

She sounds absolutely stunning on some of these tracks - probably the best she has sounded in many years.

What I find disappointing is the choice of tracks. The Name of the Game will always be one of their worst ever singles. It's so dull. Not even Cher can do much with that.

I also could have done without Dancing Queen, as it's their most overrated track. It's just not a very good song. And Waterloo, which is abysmal.

If she'd swapped them out for Lay All Your Love On Me, Summer Night City and Angeleyes, oh lord we'd have a masterpiece on our hands.

We better get a volume 2.

Posted by: liamk97 28th September 2018, 11:28 AM

I was referring more to her post-Believe career where she has relied greatly on vocoder. Obviously the vocal chords change as you get older so I think a lot of people assume she takes advantage of the success she had with vocoder in the 90s and uses it to hide such change, but this album shows that actually she can still sing well without it. It's a surprise but one that is refreshing and greatly welcome.

I enjoy all the songs she chose but I agree it would have been nice to see her sing a few of the less obvious song choices. I don't think she'd even have to remove any tracks as there's room on the album for more songs.

I gave it a listen. Really liked One of us. That's about it tbh the rest all I could think was Abba's version are far superior. I say this as a huge huge huge Cher fan too, I love her stuff from really early stuff and more obscure stuff right up to her last album. I'll still buy it to support her of course but doubt I listen to it much bar the last song.

That's great to hear! I've found it a shame for a while how radio/streaming suggests that teens/young adults are unable to connect with artists that are any older than those in their thirties at maximum. I'm certain that so many young people would actually be very diverse if only older artists were actually presented to them more. It was a lot more "anything goes" when I was very young. For instance I was only 10 when Cher released Believe and I didn't care at all that she was 52 (I don't think at the time I was even interested in how old she was, I just loved the song).

Anyway it's excellent to see that her CD is #1 on Amazon! It's also #1 on iTunes. Do we know if she has any British promo upcoming?

If only they hadn’t held back the vinyl version or released some fan bundles she’d be #1 drama.gif

She's tracking for 160k-180k in the US and will open at number 2 (or 3 if Kanye drops an album, which seems likely).

That's unbelievably huge for her. Her last studio album, Closer to the Truth, opened with 63k. So, it's a HUGE jump.

Posted by: Spiceboy 30th September 2018, 01:27 PM

Oh I hope Kanye doesn't release would be fantastic for Cher to get the #2 position in the US would be her highest charting solo album ever over there, and her highest since Look at us by Sonny & Cher in 1962 which also hit #2. Would love for Cher to finally get a #1 album in America though she bloody deserves one (although maybe not for this record lol).

Posted by: Crazy Chris 30th September 2018, 04:04 PM

Agreed. I actually think in a lot of cases that it's more young people don't buy music from older artists because they're not played on commercial radio rather than radio doesn't play them because young people aren't interested. Not always the case, granted, but I do think that if radio and Spotify gave certain artists a chance that some would see a bit more chart relevance.

I'm still loving this album. Joyful music by a woman so full of life; it's so easy to just transport to a happy place when listening to this record.

QUOTE("Music Week")
Had Stewart not become the second oldest male soloist to have a No.1 this week, Cher would have become the second oldest female soloist (after Barbra Streisand) so to do with an album of new material. Previously No.1 only with 1991’s Love Hurts and the following year’s compilation Greatest Hits 1965-1992, she debuts at No.2 with Abba covers set Dancing Queen on sales of 22,677 copies more than four months after her 72nd birthday. (Vera Lynn was famously 92 when her compilation We’ll Meet Again topped the chart in 2009, but it contained no new material, with recording dates for its tracks ranging from 1936 to 1960.)

Dancing Queen is Cher’s first album of new recordings since 2013, when Closer To The Truth debuted and peaked at No.4 on sales of 14,621 copies, and delivers her 15thTop 75 entry (including two albums with late former husband, Sonny), arriving 53 years to the week after her first, All I Really Want To Do.

I'm thrilled for ©her. If she was available for UK promotion (say Strictly Come Dancing?), she could achieve even more.

Posted by: Spiceboy 6th October 2018, 02:21 PM

I don't think she will be promoting this album much at all bar the single releases tbh. She is on tour in Australia and that is a heck of a long way to travel for a few days promotion. If she comes to the UK to tour however I'm sure they will be alot of promo.

She should really promote, this album could be a really decent seller for her. Could even see a Dancing Queen vol 2 next year if it does do well.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 6th October 2018, 04:52 PM

It's a shame she isn't around to promote it as she could build up some great sales, interesting too how it will hold up this week.

Bloody streaming nonsense! Cher debuts at #3 in the US with 153,000 sales. 150,000 of them are physical sales making her the #1 selling album in physical sales. Such a shame she couldn't finally get a #1 album, god knows she deserves it after 54 years in the business!

A follow up is taking it a bit far - she’s better than an ABBA tribute act, once was fun but that’s it.

It is the sort of thing that screams "one-off" but to be fair there was calls from the fans for a follow up and all the reviews i read were very positive. I guess Cher is also at the point of her career where she can do whatever she wants basically. laugh.gif

I'd say so given how many albums she's released since 1964

I'm really not here for a second Abba album, might even not buy it or likely will wait until it is reduced. I think this one is pretty terrible (bar one of us which I love). Like why would I want to listen to Cher singing Abba song's when they sound much better in the original form... might as well stick Abba Gold on.

I want to know what this album she was working on two years ago was. She said in some Vegas interview it had never been done before to her knowledge???

Yeah I would like this second album to have a few lesser known ABBA songs. I guess that proposed tracking list does include 'Rock Me' and 'I Do' though. I think something like 'The Visitors' would work really well for Cher, especially with that slight effect on Frida's voice in the verses.

I think it would have been a good idea to release a deluxe version of Dancing Queen to coincide with the standard and use that as an opportunity to add on three or four more obscure ABBA songs. That way, those that are really interested can purchase that whilst the standard could appeal to the casual fans.

Posted by: Liаm 30th November 2018, 02:25 PM

I'd be here for it too if it was more obscure songs, she did good versions of everything on this album but because they're songs we know so well, it's hard to add anything new. Mamma Mia did it better because it was tied to a feel good film but Cher is just doing passable versions of songs we already know that are hard to go back, One Of Us is easily the best because she interprets it a bit more and brings that emotion that I don't feel even the original has. If she took some more obscure songs and put her own spin on them, that'd be really cool.
