Cher recently announced that she's recorded an album of ABBA covers, following her role in the new Mamma Mia prequel/sequel in which she covers 'Fernando'.
Now, it seems she's just announced the tracking list on Twitter:
I think September was confirmed a while ago which is good.
She's listed some of my fave ABBA songs which is fab gone for most of the classics which was expected but i kinda want a few oddities. Gimme Eagle or When All Is Said And Done.
I assume the last one is either gonna be Fernando or maybe a full solo Super Trouper.
So ready for this - the gayest pop album ever
Slightly disappointing it'll probably be karaoke versions of the same old Abba songs, but I'm still here for this gay apocalypse.
She's said it'll be a mix of the original plus her own take, so it will be her own takes rather than straight covers.
I would’ve thought that Fernando would be on here but maybe she realises that everyone who buys this album will already have the Mamma Mia soundtrack
Didn't even notice 'Fernando' wasn't on the tracking list tbh, I just took it for granted that it was!
Surely the last track is something other than 'Fernando' though, otherwise what would be the point in keeping it a secret?
Fernando is amazing, bring it on!
This actually fills me with nightmares.
I'm quite PARTIAL to her HONKING all over Fernando so will give this a whirl. I'd have liked at least one or two LESSER KNOWN tracks but I guess she needs to pay for the next facelift.
I wasn’t really a fan of her versions of Fernando or super trooper, she doesn’t have voice that the girls had. That’s not a diss at her at all she has a great voice but it’s quite deep while hey had very seeet voices. Honking was used above sounds right lol.
Love her so bring it on! ALso, Closer to the Truth is a decent album
Shes got a clean bandit duet appaz
A Clean Bandit duet could be very interesting.
This covers album may perform reasonable ok forCher.
Just last week she achieved her first top 100 entry for some time with Fernando.
I was expecting Fernando to be the runaway success from the film tbh but I do think the album will be a success for her - she’s releasing it in Q4 and the contents appeal to her largely gay fan base, would be surprised if it didn’t go Gold.
All she needs is a few decent promo slots, it'll be an easy mothers gift for Christmas (and probably GAYZ too). I'm fairly sure at this stage it's going to karaoke all the way but it's still going to be interesting.
When all is said and done is amazing Also slipping through my fingers and Angel Eyes
Oh my Cher!
I'm literally shaking here.
It is going to sound IMMENSE.
Sounds amazing, hoping this is out ASAP to tide over the wait for the album
Sounds exactly as I hoped it would - this is totally an album for the gays and she has played it perfectly
omg i knew that ‘gimme gimme gimme’ would be track 10.
there’s no way she’d throw an album to the gays + not include that anthem!

Gimme, Gimme, Gimme is on Spotify. It's ok, pretty faithful to the original. I just love the original so much I find it a bit karaoke. Not sure what I'm going to make of this album tbh.
Guessing the album is called Dancing Queen, this is the cover that's attached to it.
Love the album cover and the homage to Agnetha and Frida.
Listening to Gimme, Gimme, Gimme now and i LOVE it! Also DQ is really all the album could be called tbh. Can’t wait for the album - it’s total fun and for the gays
I must admit as soon as I saw the title I thought, yeah that had to be the album name! I'm not sure on the album cover... It's a nice homage but it looks really cheap Tbh the whole thing screams cheap Hopefully it will sell well enough though should be able to get another Gold record with this surely?
GGG sounds hilariously awful but I guess this album is all about kitsch for gays so bring it on!
It's somehow even gayer than I had imagined lmao.
Queen! I’m in love with this. Would love it to somehow scrape the official Top 40
This is painful. It sounds so poorly mixed.
I wonder if the unannounced track is actually a new song WITH Abba?
Yeah I can't muster up a huge amount of enthuiasm for this it's very cheap and tacky, like we already have Mamma Mia covers of these songs that are fun and all but this is v year 8 music lesson demo button on a keyboard...
I’m dying at this. But when I hear it out I’ll bop for my life
This is so trashy and camp, I love it! I'm going to be in my element if I hear this on a night out.
I love how emphasised that famous melody is; the original is of course fabulous but it feels so much more punchy and pronounced here, much like how it was when Madonna sampled.
From Vanity Fair:
I was thinking who else could pull this off and there are so few
I'd be here for Steps doing an Abba covers album they did a fantastic job with Lay all your love on me, I know him so well and Thank Abba for the music
Gimme, Gimme, Gimme #21 on iTunes Wasn’t expecting it to do anything even in a low sales climate!
I'll say it again and tell me off if you like but if you want to hear Abba songs then play an Abba album. Simples.
I thought she said she was putting her own stamp on them? They have been pretty much carbon copies so far??
'SOS' sticks more to the original, just with a little more sparkle, but her version of 'Gimme' is Cher to a tee.
Really? I think GGG is pretty faithful to the original. Exact same beat, melody, lyrics...?
I love Cher but the release just doesn’t appeal to me. Doing an album of covers is fine but why not be a bit more creative and choose less well known tracks and reinvent the style of the track instead of just copying the original.

Underwhelming bundles but at least she is getting multiple album and single sales out of each one I guess - acts like Cher should go all out with their physicals though.

September 07, 2018
It’s an extra special day on The Ellen Show, because the incomparable CHER is here! The Goddess of Pop has had an illustrious career, and she’s inspired many singers, dancers, and performers along the way. Cher has truly done it all, from her early singing days to huge hits like “Believe,” to major achievements in film and on stage! Not only is she a talented performer, she has used her voice to become an important figure in social activism and speaking out against injustice. Cher stops by the show today to catch up with Ellen and to talk about her latest film, “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!” She'll perform the classic ABBA song, “SOS” from her upcoming ABBA tribute album, “Dancing Queen”! It’ll be nothing short of an extra glamorous day on The Ellen Show!
An excerpt from Cher's fantastic new interview with The New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/04/arts/music/cher-abba-broadway-interview.html

Why would she say her own albums are bad?!? Who does that!?
I don’t rate believe as her best at all, I wonder if she would if it had flopped? Heart of stone is my favourite Cher album it is incredible!
Have you ever considered an album of covers before - “never”
What was It’s a mans world then!?
She's always been open that she's not a "Cher fan" but she does it with humour and I like that about her.
Closer to the Truth is the only album I've listened to in its entirety and there's a great balance of bangers and ballads. 'Dressed to Kill', 'Lovers Forever', 'Favourite Scars' and 'I Hope You Find It' are all favourites of mine.
Cher's been doing the rounds of promo recently, including a (mimed) live performance of 'SOS' on Ellen:
Really liked this interview too:
Its probably why she doesnt release music that often.
Hopefully she’ll start doing more “grown up” albums. Songbooks etc.
She hated the vocoder on ‘believe’ though
she loved the $$ it brought though
Has anyone made any decent fan made covers for Dancing Queen? I'm not totally keen on the cover lol.
Got ourselves an extended mix of 'Gimme':
I love Cher in this haha

'One of Us' now available:
Really liking that! I was expecting it to suddenly break into a disco floorfiller but I'm glad she kept it stripped throughout. There's a great vulnerability to her voice which makes for any power she might be lacking.
Album out next Friday and I'm so ready!
I like it! Just not that fade out
I like the music video. I think it's absolutely brilliant. It is very clever. The message is so emotional & powerful. The director did a great, great job. It features women of all ages, colors, races & a transsexual. Women helping a young girl who is lost. Betty Who (the tall blonde girl) is so Agnetha-alike. Trace Lysette is beautiful (had no idea she was a trans-woman). Lauren Weedman was so great in HBO's Looking. She's mesmerizing in the video. The younger girls are equally interesting & beautiful. Even picking Rumer Willis is an interesting pick.
It has a lot in it: feminism, an empowerment message, meaning, gay wink, fashion, a huge tribute to ABBA (the shots, the lights, the clothes - watch the original ABBA video). It's retro and yet absolutely current. The only thing missing is Cher herself.
Wonder how high the album will chart next week. Suppose No.1 isn't out of the question.
No.1 best selling CD on Amazon. May even buy it myself.
Just completed my listen of the album. A lot of people are going to think this is very karaoke but, whilst they're not far wrong, it would be unfair to just dismiss the album. The songs do stick closely to the originals but they all have that extra pizzazz and shine; so joyful and fun, making you want to get up and party. What's most notable about the album is how surprisingly strong Cher's voice is. There is, of course, traces of vocoder and perhaps Cher doesn't have the most powerful voice, but for the most part the vocals are clear, she knows how to use her voice well and it allows her to bring her own touch to the songs.
The last two are highlights for me. 'The Winner Takes It All' sounds exactly like I thought and hoped it would and sounds absolutely glorious because of it and 'One of Us' gives us some beautiful vulnerability and emotion. 'Gimme' also remains a banger which goes off when played on nights out.
I wouldn't say it was at all surprising that Cher's voice sounds strong. She has a very powerful voice and has always been able to use it well. She's an extremely underrated vocalist, I suspect purely because of her use of vocoder effects, which makes people think she can't sound good on her own.
She sounds absolutely stunning on some of these tracks - probably the best she has sounded in many years.
What I find disappointing is the choice of tracks. The Name of the Game will always be one of their worst ever singles. It's so dull. Not even Cher can do much with that.
I also could have done without Dancing Queen, as it's their most overrated track. It's just not a very good song. And Waterloo, which is abysmal.
If she'd swapped them out for Lay All Your Love On Me, Summer Night City and Angeleyes, oh lord we'd have a masterpiece on our hands.
We better get a volume 2.
I was referring more to her post-Believe career where she has relied greatly on vocoder. Obviously the vocal chords change as you get older so I think a lot of people assume she takes advantage of the success she had with vocoder in the 90s and uses it to hide such change, but this album shows that actually she can still sing well without it. It's a surprise but one that is refreshing and greatly welcome.
I enjoy all the songs she chose but I agree it would have been nice to see her sing a few of the less obvious song choices. I don't think she'd even have to remove any tracks as there's room on the album for more songs.
Love that this is seemingly selling so well! Cher for #1
I got teary listening to The Winner Takes It All. The vulnerability & emotion in her voice with those sad synths in the background just got to me. The whole song feels pretty euphoric.
Giving it a listen now, will be buying my copy this weekend or next week.

Slay.
I gave it a listen. Really liked One of us. That's about it tbh the rest all I could think was Abba's version are far superior. I say this as a huge huge huge Cher fan too, I love her stuff from really early stuff and more obscure stuff right up to her last album. I'll still buy it to support her of course but doubt I listen to it much bar the last song.
A member of Chic said on Instagram that their album is #3, Cher is #2 and Rod Stewart is #1. I'm guessing that's in the UK. I really hope Cher can catch up with Rod!
Fingers crossed for Cher! I've downloaded my copy from itunes will probably end up buying a physical copy too this week too just to support her (I was planning to wait until it was reduced as I'm not a big fan of the album)
Quite an impressive Metacritic score of 78 so far! That indicates generally positive/favourable reviews. Closer to the Truth had a score of 61.
Great if Cher is starting out at midweek #2
No not great Jay she should be midweek and all week #1!!! For every album!!
Impressive that Cher is a contender for #1 after Closer to the Truth fell short. Mamma Mia has really boosted her career, she's so popular with people my age right now. Gimme always goes off in my town!
Back to No.1 on Amazon with Rod at 2 and Chic at 26. I think Rod will be more front-loaded than Cher ths week.
Agree that One Of Us is the stand-out.
Winner Takes It All is perfect. Just wish she sang the “roll the dice” outro.
She's tracking for 160k-180k in the US and will open at number 2 (or 3 if Kanye drops an album, which seems likely).
That's unbelievably huge for her. Her last studio album, Closer to the Truth, opened with 63k. So, it's a HUGE jump.
Oh I hope Kanye doesn't release would be fantastic for Cher to get the #2 position in the US would be her highest charting solo album ever over there, and her highest since Look at us by Sonny & Cher in 1962 which also hit #2. Would love for Cher to finally get a #1 album in America though she bloody deserves one (although maybe not for this record lol).
Loving the CD but at just 40 minutes long she could have added a few extra tracks. Say 12-14 instead of just 10.
Oh yes I forgot she was there! Yas at that look. *.*
Waterloo and Mamma Mia were my personal favourites fro the album!
I thought they were dreadful, the worse two on the whole album lol.
So it debuted at #2 in the UK, her highest album chart position since her Greatest hits went in at #1 in 1992 and her highest studio album peak since 1991's Love Hurts.
Does anyone know the sales I can't find it in the charts thread they are really hard to navigate lol.
Oh ignore me I found it in the thread 'Sales'
22,677 for #2. An improvement on her last album's 14,621, that one went silver so should be looking at Gold for this one hopefully.
I don't think she will be promoting this album much at all bar the single releases tbh. She is on tour in Australia and that is a heck of a long way to travel for a few days promotion. If she comes to the UK to tour however I'm sure they will be alot of promo.
She should really promote, this album could be a really decent seller for her. Could even see a Dancing Queen vol 2 next year if it does do well.
It's a shame she isn't around to promote it as she could build up some great sales, interesting too how it will hold up this week.
Bloody streaming nonsense! Cher debuts at #3 in the US with 153,000 sales. 150,000 of them are physical sales making her the #1 selling album in physical sales. Such a shame she couldn't finally get a #1 album, god knows she deserves it after 54 years in the business!
Pretty certain that the 150k figure includes downloads - very impressive though!

This is one of my favorites:
The album is still in the Top 10 in its third week of charting.
Chart run: #2 - #8 - #9 - ...
UK sales so far: 37,139 copies.
Happy with that! Expected sales to keep slumping down but it dropped by less than 2k this week. Might be too soon to say that's a sign it'll stick around a while yet, but I'll take it as a good thing anyway.
Rod Stewart's still top 5, I'm impressed!
Cher needs to come to the UK and do some promo for this album push it over the gold certification.
Standard vinyl and HMV Exclusive Blue vinyl have been released so should give it a chart boost.
She needs to come do some daytime TV shows and Graham Norton with a few performances to give the album a boost.
There is potentially a uk leg in the works so she might promo then but thats not till next year
Oh I hope so! I saw her in Vegas would definitely go see her again
Looks like next year we'll be getting an ABBA covers follow-up, as well as a Christmas album:
https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/cher-to-release-a-new-album-of-abba-covers-in-2019__24892/
It is the sort of thing that screams "one-off" but to be fair there was calls from the fans for a follow up and all the reviews i read were very positive. I guess Cher is also at the point of her career where she can do whatever she wants basically.
I'd say so given how many albums she's released since 1964
I'm really not here for a second Abba album, might even not buy it or likely will wait until it is reduced. I think this one is pretty terrible (bar one of us which I love). Like why would I want to listen to Cher singing Abba song's when they sound much better in the original form... might as well stick Abba Gold on.
I want to know what this album she was working on two years ago was. She said in some Vegas interview it had never been done before to her knowledge???
It's all very "stick Abba Gold on and pick your fave". She should do some more obscure Abba songs... saying that I'd lvoe a version of 'Lay All Your Love On Me'.
I'd be here for it too if it was more obscure songs, she did good versions of everything on this album but because they're songs we know so well, it's hard to add anything new. Mamma Mia did it better because it was tied to a feel good film but Cher is just doing passable versions of songs we already know that are hard to go back, One Of Us is easily the best because she interprets it a bit more and brings that emotion that I don't feel even the original has. If she took some more obscure songs and put her own spin on them, that'd be really cool.
The https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dancing-Queen-VINYL-Cher/dp/B07G29RCL7/ of 'Dancing Queen' is finally out, just in time for Christmas. Look how glossy it is:

Still top 65 this week and with the above looks like it could remain there this coming Friday.
A new lyric video for 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!' has just been uploaded to YouTube. It's fantastic!
Prefer her singing her own songs but bless her she is still amazing!!
