BuzzJack Music Forum _ Kylie and Dannii Minogue _ Kylie SLAYS Glastonbury Legend slot

Posted by: liamk97 18th July 2018, 01:28 PM

QUOTE
We're now just less than a year away from the return of Glastonbury, but who will be taking on the coveted Legends Slot for 2019?

The iconic festival was rested in 2018 for its fallow year, but plans are in place for the next instalment, with co-organiser Emily Eavis recently explaining that tickets will be available from October 2018, with a line-up announcement soon after.

Speaking on BBC Radio 2 earlier this month, Emily revealed that “we’ve done our first draft of the Pyramid Stage", which includes finalising the Legends Slot. The likes of Shirley Bassey, Dolly Parton, ELO and Lionel Richie have turned the slot into a phenomenon in the past, helping the latter two acts return to the top of the Official Albums Chart.

While not confirming who 2019's legend is, Emily gave some clues: "I can’t tell you, but I’ll give you a clue: it’s a female. She is not British, but I can’t give you any more clues because it will get me into trouble.”

Who should take to the Pyramid Stage? Let's weigh up some contenders.

Kylie Minogue
Kylie Minogue was meant to headline Glastonbury in 2005, but sadly had to pull out following her breast cancer diagnosis. While the Golden Australian made a cameo during Scissor Sisters' 2010 Pyramid showcase, she's yet to do a whole set of her own. Is 2019 her year, and will it be in the Legends Slot?

Kylie told Press Association: "It would be amazing and very emotional to be standing there and doing what I didn't get to do all those years ago, for sure."

Time to finish some unfinished business!

Posted by: pippa 18th July 2018, 02:51 PM

I think if it happens it would be sensational for Kylie when we consider the reason she didnt get to perform on that stage.
For Kylie herself, i hope this does come to fruition.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 18th July 2018, 03:07 PM

Already confirmed to be female and not British so that's a good hint smile.gif

sorry I just read this in the article above

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 18th July 2018, 11:43 PM

It would be great for Kylie as I'm sure it's something she really wants considering the awful time she went through when she should have been on such a legendary stage.

Posted by: ___∆___ 19th July 2018, 01:39 AM

So hope this happens - also the impact of headlining Glastonbury seem to be far reaching with acts getting a sales uplift afterwards (Dolly Parton nearly scored her first #1 album after headlining).

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 19th July 2018, 09:08 AM

Ya it always brings a huge sales boost. For Kylie I think it will be very emotional for her

Posted by: pippa 19th July 2018, 09:47 AM

Highly emotional to start and then it will be a huge party.
I would think Kylie will throw everything at the performances and make it one big enjoyable party that both she, her fans and the others there will remember.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 20th July 2018, 12:02 AM

Ya if it's true she will do a show to remember and a duet will be in there too.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 20th July 2018, 01:22 PM

Looks like it maybe Madonna.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 20th July 2018, 01:44 PM

I suppose that makes sense as she's due an album out later this year.

Posted by: pippa 20th July 2018, 04:09 PM

I am disappointed for Kylie if its not her.

Posted by: Regina 20th July 2018, 05:29 PM

If they didn't ask her back during the Aphrodite era, or the X one for that matte,r they won't do it now.

It's for the Legends slot though and Kylie would probably be considered too current for that slot back then. I could see it feasibly happening next year and certainly hope so!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 21st July 2018, 02:05 PM

She more than deserves her place on the legends stage.

Posted by: vibe 23rd July 2018, 12:12 PM

Will they book Kylie and Madonna on the same bill ?
Although nothing’s confirmed I wouldn’t have thought the organisers would do this .

I personally would love it.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 24th July 2018, 08:28 PM

Oh God, I would LOVE that!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 24th July 2018, 09:39 PM

That would be great if it happened as there are many who are fans of both.

Posted by: liamk97 17th September 2018, 12:59 PM

Bump following recent reports. Look like she could be doing it!

Posted by: pippa 17th September 2018, 01:07 PM

I thought this was confirmed this weekend?

Posted by: liamk97 17th September 2018, 01:07 PM

Not officially.

Posted by: pippa 17th September 2018, 01:08 PM

I am disappointed now as i had thought it was a certainty.

Posted by: liamk97 17th September 2018, 01:12 PM

I mean this amount of buzz seems to suggest it is all but confirmed. I'd be surprised if she wasn't doing it.

Posted by: pippa 17th September 2018, 01:46 PM

I will be truly gutted if it turns up she is not doing it.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 17th September 2018, 07:15 PM

Me too but I think it's almost certain.

Posted by: ___∆___ 17th September 2018, 08:13 PM

I’ve never done Glastonbury before - 2019 could be the year if it turns out to be true which seems highly likely! cheer.gif

Posted by: pippa 18th September 2018, 06:36 PM

If Kylie releases a new Greatest Hits style of release to tie in with Glastonbury and if we assume a 1 cd set, what tracks do you think would be selected as the last Best of had a very disappointing track listing.

Posted by: ___∆___ 7th October 2018, 07:52 AM

In the virtual queue to get my Glastonbury tickets - can’t run the risk of Kylie being the headline and not being there to see it.

Yes - all booked (Apperently they all sold out in 30 minutes!). I’ve paid the £50 deposit to secure the tickets and the full amount has to be be paid by April so if she doesn’t end up being the headline then I won’t complete the purchase tongue.gif

Soon hopefully - there are so many names floating around aside from Kylie (Madonna and ABBA!).

I’m so thrilled to announce that I’ll be playing the ‘Legend slot’ on Sunday 30th June at @GlastoFest 2019. It will be 14 years since I was originally meant to appear there and so much has happened up to now. I can’t wait to see you all there to share this special show.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 19th December 2018, 12:45 PM

I think they will go all out for Sigala feat Kylie to be a big hit now......

Who will appear with her?

Nick Cave ?
Robbie Williams?
Jason Donovan?
Sigala?
Bono?
Chris Martin?
Dannii?
Keith Washington? rotf.gif

I think/hope it will be the Kylie show - she doesn’t need features etc.,

I know but it always helps to add to her legendary status. She is friends with loads of fellow A-listers.....

just hope its not Jake Shears but probably will

I wouldn't mind him, kinda like the duet!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 19th December 2018, 01:48 PM

In delighted for kylie herself. I do think she will wind down more and more now and this is a lovely milestone for her with a lovely meaning and full of sentiment. Not that she never does but she will go all on it for this and put an amazing show.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 19th December 2018, 02:17 PM

So pleased for her to have this conclusively confirmed, especially after the unfortunate events of 2005 prevented her from previously doing it.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 19th December 2018, 03:27 PM

i just hope she doesnt tire herself out before hand in all those other concerts

Posted by: ___∆___ 19th December 2018, 04:53 PM

Talk about go from strength to strength though - successful ‘comeback’ album, promo slots on all the major TV shows, sell out arena tour and now summer tour and Glastonbury and potentially Brighton Pride if the rumours are to be believed.

Posted by: pippa 19th December 2018, 05:10 PM

Kylie needs a good break for all early to Mid 2019 and then prepare for this huge showcase for her.
I think the set list will be extremely interesting and also very important.
I hope a good mixture of songs across a few eras will happen.
I do think it will be a fun, emotional, joyful and proud night for Kylie.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 19th December 2018, 06:20 PM

Could also help her streaming next year.......

Posted by: pippa 19th December 2018, 08:30 PM

If that happened it would be wonderful as it has cost her with chart placings.

Posted by: ThePoguesmith 19th December 2018, 08:38 PM

So excited for her! I'm fully anticipating this to be a big show biggrin.gif

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 19th December 2018, 11:47 PM

Its going to be huge for kylie. I'd love to see Chris Martin from coldplay there for a duet after coldplay's lovely tribute in 2005.

Posted by: pippa 20th December 2018, 04:17 PM

That would be lovely if it happened.
At the time, it was a very moving moment.

A positive reaction from NME here:

QUOTE
Outside of the headliners, the Glastonbury ‘legends slot’ is one of its most enduring – if recent – myth makers. A Sunday afternoon set, perfectly timed to lift spirits and spur you on through that final evening’s sesh, it’s boasted everyone from Neil Diamond to Dolly Parton, Lionel Ritchie to Shirley Bassey, all of whom brought huge singalongs to the Pyramid Stage. Now, finally, it’s Kylie’s turn to shine.

Announced this morning (19 December) as Glastonbury 2019’s Sunday afternoon performer, Kylie’s world-beating ‘Golden’ tour is primed to pull into Worthy Farm on June 30, hits and hotpants in tow. The ‘Golden’ tour, which recently tore through the UK, is a masterclass in pop performance – centred around a Midwest American tale of heartbreak and hedonism, it finds Kylie breaking free of her sugary pop past once and for all. Taking in everything from country to ripping rock numbers (alongside the hits, naturally), it’s proof she’s more than just a shiny pop star.

Below, we’ve rounded up all the reasons Kylie Minogue’s Sunday afternoon legends slot at Glastonbury 2019 is set to be one of the weekend’s most bombastic hours.

QUOTE
Alistair Norbury, president, repertoire & marketing at BMG UK, has spoken to Music Week about the potential Glastonbury effect for Kylie Minogue.

The singer releases a new greatest hits, Step Back In Time, on Friday (June 28). It lands just as Minogue prepares for the coveted Sunday afternoon legends slot at Glastonbury.

“The fact that she’s got the [legends]slot at Glastonbury on the Sunday is a perfect opportunity,” said Norbury. “This is one of our tent pole releases for the year, and the Glastonbury slot couldn’t be a better way to kick off that campaign. This is the platform that everyone wants.”

While Minogue’s career repertoire is with various labels, BMG is well placed to release her first full best of compilation since 2012. As well as being a JV with Warner Music, which controls the Parlophone material, the collection is a collaboration between BMG’s frontline and catalogue teams. It draws on BMG’s control of early catalogue and Minogue’s most recent album, Golden, which peaked at No.1 last April and has sales to date of 147,953, according to the Official Charts Company.

“That’s a perfect example of BMG working the frontline label – where we have Kylie signed – with our catalogue label, which has the PWL catalogue and the Deconstruction catalogue,” said Norbury “So we’re able to put together the Kylie best of. While we have licensed in other material, the Parlophone repertoire, this is about catalogue and frontline working together – and publishing, too, because we publish on a lot of material on that album, either via Kylie or co-writers.”

Norbury described the physical edition as “spectacular”.

“We’ve got very high hopes and [the album] will go all the way through to Christmas,” he said.

Commenting on the campaign, Peter Stack, EVP, global catalogue recordings, added: “We have been working on this for a year. And there is a lot more to come.”

The album also features a new track, New York City.

Posted by: pippa 27th June 2019, 01:40 PM

Wonderful to get the sales update on Golden, 150,000 is coming very soon.
This really shows the belief in the Greatest Hits as they have a plan in place similar to Golden that will help the album recover sales well outside its initial release frame.

BBC segment this morning:

Posted by: ___∆___ 27th June 2019, 02:17 PM

That’s a great article from Music Week and BMG really is the best home for Kylie - they seem to totally get the fans want physicals and special editions and they do them well, they also have plans for all their releases long term rather than just week 1 - the fact that there is ‘a lot more to come’ makes me think they could add in some additional Glastonbury content to an updated edition of the album or give us a further album of rarities cheer.gif Either way super exciting to have a label that is totally behind Kylie!

Posted by: pippa 27th June 2019, 03:08 PM

BMG clearly know what Kylie fans both want and like and they are serving those needs very well.
They have an understanding of what is needed to keep Kylie in the limelight and be successful with releases and more importantly they believe in Kylie.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 27th June 2019, 06:14 PM

They def believe in kylie and so far they seem to have trust in each other. Bmg serm very excited by this release.

They said they have ‘lots planned’ though so if they manage this the same way as ‘Golden’ and we do get the repackage they mentioned then it should hang around?

A repackage is a total rip-off in my opinion, I may just wait until they announce what a repackage entails.

Well much better than Janet Jackson. She really got the crowd going.

Posted by: ___∆___ 30th June 2019, 04:13 PM

I’ve loved Kylie since 88 and seeing her smashing it at Glastonbury was everything - she has cemented her place as the queen of pop in the UK.

Everything was perfect - I’ve said it a million times and it’s not most Kylie fans favourite song but ‘Kids’ was a low point, it doesn’t work without a male singer also would have loved her to bring Jason on for EFY.

The duet with Nick Cave was iconic and I LOVED the section from Shocked to The Locomotion - such fun pure pop and then she brought it down perfectly with All The Lovers.

Now she needs to finish this week with a massive selling #1 album please!

She was brilliant.

Sound a bit crap in first half

Still think Lewis may well take top spot in album charts. Depends how many preorders she sold.

Killers also going well

Miley cyrus will benefit from the bbc1 coverage too

I'm just gonna come out and say it: not only THE set of this Glastonbury, but for me, THE best set I've ever seen in all the years I've watched the festival. I've never seen a crowd so in unison like that, so joyous and liberated, and Kylie looked and sounded incredible. The look on her face at the very start when she realised that pretty much the whole festival had descended on the Pyramid stage to watch her was so heart warming. Truly a gig to be proud of for years to come. And I'm so gonna book when she does a tour next!

Posted by: ___∆___ 30th June 2019, 07:22 PM

^^ This basically - I felt I could gush to much as a stan but seriously agree with everything, iconic from start to finish.

The gift of her face when she sees the Glastonbury crowd is brilliant.

It's amazing. The camera loves her

Dua Lipa was watching going by her insta stories. Talent supports talent!

Posted by: Medellíam 30th June 2019, 10:59 PM

Just finished watching! She slayed.

I love this new Bowie mix of 'Slow'. The 'Bad Girls' mix of 'Locomotion' really rejuvenates the song. 'I Should Be So Lucky', 'Where the Wild Roses Grow', 'All the Lovers', 'Dancing', 'Spinning Around' - so many highlights!! Living for the security dancing away at the end! laugh.gif

This moment when she enters and sees the crowd tho:

Also, the size of that crowd! Sky News are suggesting it could be the biggest Glasto crowd ever, certainly for the Legends slot.

Posted by: ___∆___ 30th June 2019, 11:22 PM

Love the new thread title and total agree with the Locomotion comments - gives the song a totally new lease of life.

I’ve never seen anything like it tbh - when they kept showing shots of the crowd from the back even those right at the very back were engaged and dancing/singing along, absolutely incredible.

^Same Jay! 'Bad Girls' is one of my favourite Donna Summer songs and I remember being so happy hearing that "toot too, hey, beep beep" refrain when she performed 'Locomotion' on the Golden Tour.

I still can't get over the crowd size:

It seems Dolly Parton had the biggest crowd with an audience that exceeded 100,000. Judging by that image Kylie is surely up there, if not set a new record.

This is a snapshot of Dolly's audience:

An incredible performance, and reaction, from both Kylie and the crowd.

Dancing sounded SO good among all of her other hits. That No.38 peak is so criminal, one of the biggest chart injustices of the last few years, it feels like a much more well known song than that and will rightly go down as a Kylie classic in spite of that peak.

All The Lovers also sounded as euphoric and beautiful as ever, easily one of my favourite songs of this decade.

This - I’ve had people talk to me about it as they know I’m a Kylie fan and it’s all been ‘I didn’t realise she was that good’, ‘When’s the next concert’ etc., - Glastonbury has totally helped people rediscover Kylie who have lapsed over the years. Such an exciting time to be a fan.

Posted by: ___∆___ 4th July 2019, 02:37 PM

BBC Music have produced a video ‘The Best Of Glastonbury 2019 In 3 Minutes’ and it’s basically a promo video for Kylie and CGYOOMH - pretty incredible considering all the acts that performed there, Kylie definitely owned Glastonbury.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 4th July 2019, 11:59 PM

The medley of pwl songs was the stand out for me with dancing and all the lovers next. Loco motion, spinning around and where the wild rose's grow were great too. Kids and especially for you needed a partner for the songs to really bring them out.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 5th July 2019, 08:42 AM

I really wish she'd stop performing 'Kids' and leaving the backing singers to do Robbie's parts. I mean, the entire point of the song is the sexual chemistry/tension between her and Robbie and it's just pointless if they don't at least bring out a special guest for it.

It really aggravates me actually.

Posted by: ___∆___ 5th July 2019, 09:27 AM

I have to say I HATE ‘Kids’ and never listen to it out of choice - I appreciate it was a big hit but Kylie’s instance on always performing it when as you said it clearly doesn’t work without a male lead makes it sound really weak.

Posted by: Red Blooded Man 5th July 2019, 09:54 AM

"Kids" is a song I skipped every time. It was just barely enjoyable on tour even when you really commit yourself to enjoy the performance. laugh.gif

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 5th July 2019, 02:28 PM

Kids should be dropped I agree as so many other songs would have worked better. What do I have to do was the only rhythm of live single not performed sad.gif ,let's get to it, impossible princess and kiss me once were the only albums not to have any performance as kylie Christmas couldn't be counted. Where the wild Rose's grow as such probably represented IP.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 5th July 2019, 06:27 PM

Kids is seemingly destined to be a permanent inclusion, in order to get the casuals in her audiences fired up! cry.gif I guess it went down a storm in the crowd at Glastonbury, but on TV I feel it came across kind of flat.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 5th July 2019, 07:32 PM

I thought the same about kids that it looked flat with the crowd.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 5th July 2019, 08:06 PM

The music of Kylie is hardly my thing, but like with Barry Gibb in 2017, there wasn't any chance I wasn't going to go and watch her do the legends slot. It was a hell of a show, brilliantly performed and everyone in the crowd loved her, you don't realise just how many of the songs you actually know - there were only 4/5 I didn't recognise, and only the one with Nick Cave I didn't enjoy.

Everyone seemed to be loving Kids where I was standing.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 5th July 2019, 10:29 PM

Nice to hear a review from a non Kylie fan as such. As i said earlier there would be many many people there who would have forgot about some of her older songs so this was a great way to remind them of some of the old classics.

It was very different and even when it was released it surprised many people.
I believe no one expected Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds to duet with Kylie but it worked magically.
Nick Cave has such great respect for Kylie and he has played an important role in Kylie's career.

Kylie Minogue's decades-spanning greatest hits set has become the most-watched Glastonbury performance ever.

An average audience of 3.2m people tuned in to see her play the festival's "legend slot", beating previous highs set by Ed Sheeran and Adele.

Viewership peaked at 3.9m during the closing minutes of Kylie's set, as she played Dancing and Spinning Around.

The emotional show came 14 years after a cancer diagnosis forced the star to pull out of a planned headline slot.

"In 2005, I was meant to be here," she reminded fans from the stage. "Circumstances meant that I did not make it."

As the crowd chanted her name in support, the star blinked back tears and had to compose herself before continuing.

"I wished things were different - but life is what it is," she said. "We're all here in this moment."

The set was broadcast on BBC One later that day, and new figures from the BBC reveal it was viewers' most-popular Glastonbury performance to date.

The previous record-holder was Ed Sheeran, whose headline slot on BBC Two attracted an average audience of 3.1m in 2017.

A year earlier, the programme featuring Adele's Pyramid Stage performance was watched by 2m people, rising to 3.7m during her set.

This year's Glastonbury saw a significant shift in viewership, with audiences increasingly choosing to catch up with performances online.

The total number of online requests, including YouTube views, iPlayer requests and live streams, reached 37.5m - an increase of 86% from 2017 (Glastonbury took a year off in 2018).

However, TV viewership was down - from 23m in 2017 to 21.1m this year; although that figure is still the second-highest on record.

Slay! cheer.gif

QUOTE
Kylie Minogue‘s memorable 2019 Glastonbury set is set to broadcast in full on the BBC’s pop-up Glastonbury channel next weekend.

Minogue performed in the hallowed ‘Sunday Legends’ slot on the Pyramid Stage at last year’s Worthy Farm festival, 14 years on from when she had to cancel her Glastonbury headline slot after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The singer’s 2019 set featured guest appearances from Coldplay‘s Chris Martin and Nick Cave, and the broadcast of her performance became the most-watched in Glastonbury history.

This morning (June 18) saw the announcement that Minogue’s 2019 Glastonbury set has been added to the BBC’s dedicated ‘Glastonbury Experience’ channel, which will run next week from 10AM on June 25 to 1AM on June 29 in place of this year’s cancelled festival.

Minogue’s set will also be shown during the Glastonbury Teatime Legends show, which will be hosted by Jo Whiley and Mark Radcliffe and broadcast on BBC Two on Sunday June 28 from 6.30PM-8PM.

I was expecting Robbie to appear for 'Kids', I thought that would have been a great touch for Glastonbury since they haven't performed it together since 2000, I don't think. I'm surprised they didn't have any guest performer at all, even if they didn't have Robbie, I thought Kylie might have got Dannii involved or even Chris Martin could have joined! Jason joining for 'Especially for You' would have been good too but at least we got them together for Hyde Park the year prior.
