BuzzJack Music Forum _ Indie, Rock and Alternative _ The xx 'I See You'

Posted by: blacksquare 10th November 2016, 11:16 AM

'After many years, close together, far apart, great highs, deep lows, heartache and healing, we are so happy to let you know we are releasing our 3rd album 'I See You' on January 13th 2017.
We realise these are uncertain times and we hope the joy and love we found making the record will find its way out into the world, in however small a way.
Our first single ‘On Hold’ is available everywhere now.
Excited to see you all very soon.'

this is SOOOOO GOOD

Posted by: HarryEzra 10th November 2016, 05:54 PM

Amazing new song heart.gif

Posted by: Cassidy 10th November 2016, 06:11 PM

There's been so many rumblings recently, so excited that something is finally happening!

Posted by: Cassidy 10th November 2016, 08:01 PM

Love how this flits between The xx making their natural progressions for the next record and then glimpses of full-on Jamie xx. Very intriguing indeed.

Posted by: Cassidy 10th November 2016, 08:04 PM

Side note -- I also love the 'On Hold' artwork on Spotify.

Perfect mix of the two. Can't wait for the album.

This is fantastic ahhhh wub.gif So glad they're back!

This is so so wonderful 😍

Posted by: UltraBasicWitch 12th November 2016, 11:14 PM

I haven't listened to too much of The xx but I really liked Jamie xx's album so decided to check this out and this is absolutely incredible!! Have this on repeat now, fabulous wub.gif

Posted by: blacksquare 13th November 2016, 12:49 PM

I have had this on repeat all weekend. So good

I found the second album really disappointing so this is quite the turnaround.

Posted by: twentyonemdh 18th November 2016, 10:16 PM

On Hold has just hit US top 50 on Spotify and it's climbing fast in the UK - massive hit incoming?

Posted by: lewistgreen 20th November 2016, 12:36 PM

Performed on SNL last night

Posted by: SevenSeize 20th November 2016, 12:50 PM

On Hold is brill, hoping for this to be one of 2017's first great records!

Posted by: Jester 20th November 2016, 02:22 PM

Easily the song of the year!

Posted by: Cassidy 20th November 2016, 07:13 PM

Ooh an xx smash. That would be lovely!

Posted by: jonny 20th November 2016, 08:18 PM

Didn't like it at all when I first heard it but it has grown on me.#

They performed another one, 'I Dare You', as well. I wonder if the 'I ____ You' is some sort of theme? Probably coincidental...

Have both of their studio albums (xx and Coexist [the former of which won the Mercury Prize in 2010]) on vinyl. I've been waiting for the 3rd one ever since they announced it earlier on this year.

J'adore. Not quite as good as 'On Hold' but still solid. Hype levels even higher now and I didn't think that was possible!

they used to be edgy
when did they become Everything but the Girl? :/

you say that like it's a bad thing tongue.gif

Say Something Loving is another really good taster, hope the album lives up to this kind of standard. it feels so unfamiliaaaaaar

Posted by: jonny 7th January 2017, 09:41 PM

Personally, I like the more recent stuff way more than anything on their second album, which came across as an attempt to replicate the successes of the first and did so in a wholly ineffective way. I think they've developed as musicians a lot in the intervening years, so whilst their new sound isn't necessarily 'edgy' it does show progression.

There's a pretty interesting article http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/1403-8-songs-that-borrow-from-the-xxs-playbook/ which looks at the direct and indirect influence of The XX's music on other artists. For me, when you listen to their first album and look back at it now, you can appreciate the originality and freshness it brought, and I think the influence it had can be seen elsewhere. You only need to look at the success that Jamie has had as a writer and producer to note how pervasive the XX's style has become.

Posted by: Steve201 7th January 2017, 10:15 PM

Jamie XXs' solo album in 2015 was Brillant!

Posted by: Jade 13th January 2017, 12:07 AM

Out there now! Ready to be sleign

Edit: Loving their sound this era. 'Lips' is lovelyyyyy and my highlight so far of those I didn't already know wub.gif

Posted by: lewistgreen 13th January 2017, 12:18 PM

Such an impressive progression from them! Love how upbeat it all is with some stunning production. Keep going back to 'Dangerous', definitely a highlight of the album.

Posted by: Jade 14th January 2017, 12:58 AM

*.*

Rate after listen 2:

08 Dangerous
10 Say Something Loving
10 Lips
06 A Violent Noise
09 Performance
09 Replica
07 Brave For You
11 On Hold
10 I Dare You
07 Test Me

A bit of a loon rate but I can't help it wub.gif I had really high expectations for this so I'm sooooo glad I wasn't left disappointed. 'Lips' could potentially take the 11 off 'On Hold' in time, they're both absolutely stellar.

This is going to be on repeat for ages.

Posted by: Cremey 14th January 2017, 11:26 AM

I haven't given this a proper listen yet, but I saw the physical copies yesterday and I didn't even realise it was this at first!
I'd assumed the cover would be like the digital cover, but it's actually all silver. It does make sense for it to be foil blocked I guess (and the digital version with the band is a nice touch), just took me by surprise!

Posted by: Tinasha 14th January 2017, 04:48 PM

Got tickets to see them in Brixton!

Posted by: SKOB 14th January 2017, 06:19 PM

Liking the album! Glad they didn't do the same sound for third time in a row

Posted by: Acoustic 14th January 2017, 09:01 PM

Lips is so good. My favourite on a first listen of the album.

Posted by: ___∆___ 15th January 2017, 06:54 AM

Serious obsessed with this, I streamed it as soon as it was released and didn't think much of it but listened again and I'm hooked so purchased.

I loved their debut but after being hyped for the follow up it was a bit of a let down but this is such a return to form - so many good tracks - Performance, Replica, On Hold etc.,

Pleased to see 'On Hold' taking off again on iTunes too.

Posted by: Steve201 16th January 2017, 03:43 AM

I Dare You sounds so anthemic!!

Posted by: Mart!n 16th January 2017, 11:26 AM

This album is amazing, I have to agree with Jade, A Violent Noise is probably the weakest track on the album for me, On Hold still remains the standout track. Surely this album could be hotly tipped to win the Mercury Prize of 2017, later in the year, if this album does not get nominated I would be very cheesed off.

Posted by: Delincuentos 16th January 2017, 03:16 PM

Dangerous- what an album opener

Posted by: Tinasha 16th January 2017, 03:52 PM

After a weekend with the album, I Dare You has emerged as my favourite. Apparently it's about their love for pop music as well! About having no such thing as a guilty pleasure and enjoying everything.

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra 16th January 2017, 04:02 PM

While On Hold and Say Something Loving are excellent, Dangerous and Lips are the real standouts of the album. Gems! Very good album overall.

Posted by: Conderella 16th January 2017, 11:33 PM

Dangerous *.* That chorus is so anthemic.

A Violent Noise and I Dare You are highlights as well. Didn't expect to like this as much as i have after such a lukewarm first single.

Posted by: Steve201 17th January 2017, 12:09 AM

Same here On Hold is just really growing on me now and I first heard it in November!

Posted by: HarryEzra 17th January 2017, 03:35 AM

Keep meaning to post a rate of this

Rate after listen 2

08 Dangerous
10 Say Something Loving
08.5 Lips
06 A Violent Noise
08 Performance
09 Replica
10 Brave For You
11 On Hold
10 I Dare You
08 Test Me

Very strong album I am gonna say so far in 2017 (barely a month I know that this is my album of the year SO FAR)

Posted by: Steve201 17th January 2017, 11:10 PM

Yeh same here though Sundara Karma is a fine release too - so many great tracks!

Posted by: Jade 19th January 2017, 12:45 AM

On The Tonight Show *.* Pleased that they played 'Lips' wub.gif

Posted by: jonny 19th January 2017, 10:14 PM

'Say Something Loving' is just wonderful. I do like the album as a whole but I'm not sure if I would say I enjoy it as much as their debut, although they are two completely different records in many respects.

Posted by: liamk97 19th January 2017, 10:41 PM

I've not properly listened to their music before - it just seemed far too minimalistic for me and I usually like my music to make an instant impression on me - but I sat down to give I See You a listen and I was pleasantly surprised with the results. It's definitely an album that requires being listened to as a whole but that's not at all a criticism dressed up as a compliment, because a lot of albums sacrifice or don't even care about that cohesive sound or the idea of portraying a journey. There's a clear attention to this and I found myself really captivated by little quirks in the production or interested by even the way words are sung.

'On Hold' and 'Say Something Loving' are obvious single material and still represent some of the best of what the album has to offer, then beyond that there's 'Performance' and 'I Dare You' that have proven to be ones I look forward to hearing. 'Say Something Loving' gives me slight Fleetwood Mac vibes and I've picked up on that in certain aspects of other songs.

Posted by: Jade 20th January 2017, 09:59 PM

This was announced earlier as the #1 album in the UK this week so they now have 2 #1 albums to their name *.* Fabulous!

'On Hold' also re-peaked at #34 today (matching 'Islands' as their highest peaking single now ohmy.gif) - plus 'Say Something Loving', 'Dangerous', 'Lips', 'A Violent Noise' and 'I Dare You' all cracked the top 100! Slay *.* Really pleased to see them benefitting hugely from the streaming era; they only had 3 top 100 entries prior to today ('Islands'/'Angels'/'On Hold') so blimey at them almost tripling that amount.

Posted by: Cremey 20th January 2017, 10:33 PM

'A Violent Noise' is the clear highlight for me 😍

The more I listen to it, the more I agree.

Posted by: Steve201 30th January 2017, 09:48 PM

Same here though the opening track and I Dare You are hard to beat!

Posted by: Jade 5th February 2017, 10:07 PM

'A Violent Noise' has quietly crept up on me and now I really like it. I would definitely bump both that and 'Dangerous' up from my original rate.

Posted by: Tinasha 5th February 2017, 10:19 PM

Have they chosen a single 2 yet? I feel like it HAS to be Say Something Loving.

Posted by: liamk97 5th February 2017, 10:23 PM

I'd be shocked if it was anything other than 'Say Something Loving'. There's some really great tracks on this album but, other than 'On Hold', they don't have that instant single-quality status like 'Say Something Loving' does.

Posted by: Steve201 5th February 2017, 11:21 PM

I think Dangerous sounds quite anthemic and could be huge! SSL sort of sound similar to their other stuff good as it is!

Posted by: lewistgreen 6th February 2017, 04:11 PM

Dangerous has had a fair amount of recent nighttime play on Radio 1 so I'd say that'll be their choice

Posted by: Cassidy 16th February 2017, 05:35 PM

Finally giving this a proper listen. It's nothing really unexpected from them but still gorgeous enough to melt all of my emotions. Definitely potential to be up there with RTJ3 as best album of the yr so far.

Posted by: Jade 5th March 2017, 10:13 PM

They were SO GOOD live last night wub.gif 'Say Something Loving', 'Islands', 'On Hold', 'Loud Places' (the crowd went mad for this one!), 'Intro' and 'Angels' were my ultimate highlights heart.gif Plus they did a mash-up of 'Chained' with 'Sweet Like Chocolate' which was all kinds of amazing. Would definitely recommend <3

Posted by: Jade 6th March 2017, 07:25 PM

'Say Something Loving' video coming tomorrow!

Posted by: alt-Jade ∆ 7th March 2017, 03:04 PM

Sorry for triple posting kink.gif but it's here!

Simple but effective as they often do so well. <3 Nice to see them having a laugh right at the very end as well laugh.gif I hope this can do something but their post-album singles usually don't. At least it already has a #60 peak from album release week!

Posted by: Tinasha 7th March 2017, 03:16 PM

omg it's the new single. Perfect. Seeing them on Monday can't waaaait.

Posted by: liamk97 7th March 2017, 03:38 PM

Ah so 'Say Something Loving' is indeed the next single! Very happy about that; it's perhaps even more single-friendly than 'On Hold', yet it still feels very much like a song from The xx. I suspect it will get strong Radio 1 support and I hope that'll boost it back into the Top 100, even if it doesn't better its #60 peak from album release week.

'Dangerous' to be the next single (and I imagine it probably will be) so that we can say The xx received 3 Top 75 singles from one album! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Tinasha 7th March 2017, 03:41 PM

I want I Dare You as a single <3

Posted by: liamk97 7th March 2017, 03:51 PM

I'd love that!

Posted by: Melobrama 7th March 2017, 04:23 PM

Oh I've never posted in this thread yet magic.gif

This is another great album from them, feels like a real progression from the first 2 albums with a lot more of the influence from Jamie xx's solo work. My favourite track aside from the 2 singles would have to be 'A Violent Noise', stunning song, sounded brilliant live as well wub.gif (have a good time on Monday Joe!!) 'Dangerous' and 'I Dare You' are brilliant as well, I don't think any more of their singles will make much impact but I hope at least one of them gets a release ('Dangerous' seems like the most likely).

Posted by: Steve201 8th March 2017, 12:04 AM

Jamie XXs vocals are amazing in the album!

Posted by: liamk97 25th April 2017, 05:14 PM

Finally got round to buying this today - on vinyl, of course. Such a beautiful package; I love the little message on the inner sleeve where you have to use the other mirrored side of the sleeve to read it. Was quite surprised to see a CD fall out the sleeve too, I suppose that is meant to be in there? laugh.gif

The guy at the counter was talking to me about The xx and it turns out we share the exact same sentiments towards the band - we couldn't really get into much of their earlier stuff but were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves really loving the music on this album.

Posted by: Steve201 25th April 2017, 10:14 PM

It's by far my album of the year, so so good!

Posted by: lewistgreen 23rd June 2017, 10:03 AM

Deluxe version of the album is out today with 3 additional songs:

Naive
Seasons Run
Brave For You (Marfa Demo)

I Dare You has been chosen as the 3rd official single and has already been playlisted by Radio 1

Posted by: Sonar 29th June 2017, 01:18 PM

Posted by: Jade 29th June 2017, 01:30 PM

These bonus tracks were a welcome surprise! I heard 'Seasons Run' following the R1 first play the other day and it sounded gorgeous. This era is the gift that keeps on giving *.* Also, I really thought they would choose 'Dangerous' as the next single but 'I Dare You' also seems like a logical choice, so no complaints here, especially as it's one of the album highlights for me wub.gif

Posted by: 360Jupiter 29th June 2017, 02:49 PM

Seasons Run might just be one of my fave songs of the year. Would be a great single for autumn.

Posted by: jakewild 29th June 2017, 03:18 PM

went to their show in bham for my bday and they were out of this world

intro live killed me

Posted by: liamk97 29th June 2017, 06:05 PM

I agree Jade, I was expecting 'Dangerous' to be the next single but I'm over the moon about 'I Dare You' getting single status instead.

We're halfway through the year and this album remains one of my 2017 highlights. I initially listened to it with the mindset of picking out one or two songs that I liked, yet I found myself drawn back to the album time and time again. The vocals are heavenly and I love picking up on little quirks in the production with each listen; such a peaceful, therapeutic body of music that I can listen to first thing before I even get out of bed or late at night to help me wind down. The now three singles are top notch, with 'Replica' and 'Test Me' really shining through as highlights too (early faves of 'Dangerous' and 'Performance' also remain up there). In fact, it's quite hard to pick out highlights in a way because I find myself beginning to list the full album! I feel I should definitely delve into their past work.

Posted by: Jade 29th June 2017, 06:55 PM

I would highly recommend their first two albums Liam! This album clearly has more Jamie xx solo work influence in the production, but if you enjoy the peaceful element then the previous two have that in bucketloads. 'I See You' is still my favourite album of the year heart.gif 'Melodrama' is the only thing that has ran it close. I prefer this album to 'Coexist' (although my favourite song by them 'Angels' is on that album), but their self titled is my favourite still so this slots nicely in the middle.

Confirmed this evening on Radio 1 that Dangerous is the next single!

Posted by: liamk97 4th September 2017, 10:06 PM

They seem to be on point with the single choices this era; Dangerous was an immediate hightlight for me. Would be great if they could have a minor success with it but I'm sure they'll deliver with the visuals regardless.

Posted by: Jade 6th September 2017, 04:58 PM

Have to echo that the single choices this era have been on point! I actually thought 'Dangerous' would be chosen as single #3 but 'I Dare You' was a fine choice anyway.

P.s. Harry just showed me their JT Live Lounge cover and I'm in love wub.gif

Absolutely gorgeous Live Lounge set. I particularly liked their throwback choice of "Angels" instead of the predictable "Islands".

Posted by: Steve201 9th September 2017, 09:12 PM

Such a good band/album easily my fav of the year and it was out on the first proper week of the year too - second year in a row that has happened - Mystery Jets in 2016!

It will be available on an exclusive 12" vinyl with the Four Tet Remix of A Violent Noise, out on October 20th
