I had one of these before but not been used for a decade, so thought I'd start a new one with the predominant focus being on the period from my mid-2018 return, following a couple of years without entering, but first a summary of the 78 Utopian entries.

Contest 128: Circe - Ten Girls, 37th
BJSC 128 was the 78th contest and 47th final Utopia took part in, represented by London based solo artist Circe with her synth heavy 'Ten Girls'. Its 37th placed finish represented a joint lowest ever final finishing position in a result that was in some ways pleasing and in some ways not. Obviously never pleasing to equal a joint lowest record, but despite its lowly finish its appeal was quite wide, with its 18 voters being more than three of our other four finalists this year, aided by being Queen of the 1 pointer with four lots of 1 given. |

Utopia Voting History - Points Given and Received
I've been back and done a full voting history following Utopia's return including all countries that competed in the contest, the full version of which should be accessible in spreadsheet form here Votes Given 88 countries have qualified for a final I've voted in, of which 68 have received points at least once. The top 15 of which are: Rank | Points | Average Points | Country 01 140 10.77 Fljotavik 02 139 8.69 Aeroche 03 94 7.23 Terra Avium 04 90 6.00 Persephonia 05 84 6.46 Thelonia 06 82 6.31 FSR Rontvia 07 68 13.60 Arcodesia 08 64 4.27 Jadakissnia 09 63 9.00 Cowtermont 10 59 6.56 Suedonia 11 58 7.25 Skall 12 53 5.89 Kylienips 13 52 5.20 Rolloland 14 49 4.45 Seyetana 15 48 3.43 Alytr Muunilinst 12 points awarded to Zhala sees Fljotavik take the lead from Aeroche by a solitary point, as their 100% points record continues, though interestingly no 18. Terra Avium and Persephonia strengthen their places in the top 5 as the other countries in the top 10 either didn't participate or didn't qualify. A contest return for Arcodesia would definitely be most welcomed! Votes Received A total of 90 countries have voted in the 12 finals Utopia have been in, of which 76 have awarded points at least once. The top 15 of which are: Rank | Points | Average Points | Country 01 106 9.64 Fljotavik 02 94 7.83 Persephonia 03 83 6.92 Jadakissnia 04 83 7.55 Terra Avium 05 76 6.91 Skall 06 67 5.58 Seyetana 07 62 5.17 Niceland 08 61 5.08 Rolloland 09 60 5.45 Taahino 10 54 4.50 Daneviia 11 54 4.50 Jupiterdonia 12 51 4.64 Suedonia 13 50 6.25 Republic of Adonia 14 48 4.00 FARC 15 46 3.83 Aeroche It's a double #1 for Fljotavik as they give Utopia almost as many points as they receive, the top 15s have a significant amount of similarities but some nice differences too. Something I found interesting were that Persephonia and Jadakissnia in 2nd/3rd had both given points to 8/11 entries which were the same 8, a sequence now ended by Jade awarding 1 point to Circe. Big notable differences are Kylienips, Summericia, East Rukahavian and Singerpurear who's entires often go down well with Utopia but not the other way round, and vice versa for Jupiterdonia, Quintessa and Taahino (if only Your Light had qualified!) The most opportunities without a single point being exchanged is with Scherzland, up to 15 following the previous contest (0/8 given, 0/7 received), though there are plenty of other countries with who points are rarely exhanged, including: New Lexico: 1/24 The Actual Republic of Bellamia: 1/19 Hushkanukia: 2/23 Ultraviolenceland: 2/21 St. Burbia: 3/26 Unovia: 3/22 |

I do love a good spreadsheet *.* (Does remind me that my own voting history spreadsheet is one of many BJSC stats things that I'm many months behind on now, will catch up again one of these days)
No surprise of course that me and Jade have very similar voting patterns but that is interesting that we'd voted for/snubbed the exact same Utopia entries since your comeback up until now - I think Liela Moss, beabadoobee, Blood Red Shoes and Coach Party would all have made my votes too had they qualified, don't immediately recall if any of those are ones Jade would not have also voted for. x |

Contest 129: Temples - Paraphernalia
The 79th Utopian entry comes from Kettering band Temples, the third indie band to represent in 2020, with their new single Paraphernalia, something of an earworm providing a sound reminiscent of Tame Impala and as many of the YouTube comments identify, Daft Punk's 'Veridis Quo'. There appears to be much more talk and discussion around this than there normally is about a Utopia entry, could this have a wider reach than previous indie entries and become the best performing Utopia track of the year? |

BJSC 129
A great 4th place finish for Temples this month becoming the 5th top 5 and 10th top 10 for Utopia, 48 entries and 85 contests since we last graced the top 5, when 'Bassline' by Reverend & The Makers also finished 4th in 2012. Temples were supported by 26 countries who gave an average of over 11 points including an incredible 11 medal positions from Seyetana, Suedonia (18), Fljotavik, Niceland, Rolloland, Botanikka (15), Trifoski, Wholune, Oslol, Singerpurear and Lookylion (13). By points it is our most successful entry, the 290 easily beating the 247 of Riton & Kah-Lo's 'Ginger' in BJSC 107. Thanks to all who voted! Voting Histories The points given and received spreadsheet following our return has been updated, Fljotavik still lead the way despite this being their first non-scoring contest, Utah Saints ranking 19th in this contest, one place ahead of Aeroche who also don't score so remain second. Elsewhere, Persephonia climb as they become the third country to reach 100 points after another great entry with Minuit Machine, and Jadakissnia and Rolloland climb in the top 10 taking advantage of the countries around them either not participating or not qualifying with their great discoveries in ison and Lo Moon. Danaeviia was a clear 18 this contest with a challenger for my favourite BJSC discovery of the year and climb into the top 20, along with Tartford who’s 80s disco grabbed the 15 *.* A mention for Scherzland who received their first point, the only time in 17 potential occasions a vote has been exchanged either way! The points received has little change as 9 of our top 12 supporters gave double figures to Temples, so Jadakissnia (3), Skall and Taahino (non-participants) fall down. Fljotavik continue the double at the top, with the average given/received now almost equal (10 vs. 10.08). This post has been edited by RabbitFurCoat: Nov 19 2020, 09:44 AM |

BJSC 130 - Páula, Povoa & Jerge - Primavera
Rounding off Utopia's first full year of BJSC with an impressive 7th final qualification and 14th placed finish was Brazilian/French trio Páula, Povoa & Jerge with Primavera, the lead track from their excellent EP of the same name. Close to breaking 200 point barrier with 199 including four 18s from Cumulonimbia, Numayania, Pagasa and Skall which were particularly pleasing. 2020 Roundup
2020 represented the first time Utopia have taken part in a full calendar year's worth of contests. Here are the countries we've loved and been loved by the most this year. Three of each top 5 are the same, with the points between us and both Persephonia and Terra Avium being almost identical over the course of the year, that's good enough to be top in the received table for the latter but it's a comfortable lead for Fljotavik in the points given table with 7 of their 8 entries getting at least 10 points from Utopia. Impressively, 23 different countries finished in the 30 potential 'medal positions' for Utopia this year. Points Given 01 88 Fljotavik 02 72 Terra Avium 03 68 Jadakissnia 04 63 Persephonia 05 59 Aeroche 06 50 FSR Rontvia 07 47 Rolloland 08 45 Tartford 09 40 Skall 10 40 Altyr Muunilinst 11 39 Kylienips 12 38 Republic of Adonia 13 35 FARC 14 34 Danaeviia 15 31 Dobago 16 27 Thelonia 17 27 Trifoski 18 25 Ojnoj 19 23 Numayania 20 22 Seyetana Points Received 01 70 Terra Avium 02 65 Rolloland 03 64 Persephonia 04 62 Fljotavik 05 56 Seyetana 06 52 Skall 07 52 Suedonia 08 49 Jadakissnia 09 43 Niceland 10 39 Wholune 11 39 Botanikka 12 32 Numayania 13 27 Taahino 14 26 Republic of Adonia 15 24 Trifoski 16 23 Aeroche 17 23 FSR Rontvia 18 22 Eledan 19 21 Flynnonda 20 21 Oslol By the end of the year I'll have posted my top discoveries of the year, just need to do a bit more listening to the this month's songs before deciding where they should place. Contest 131: Be Charlotte - Back to Life
It was great to get a record breaking 5th consecutive final qualification with an entry that verged as far into pop as Utopia are likely to go. I had no expectations of how well this would do so was nice to see it appeal to both regular and irregular Utopia voters - a 35th placed finish with some double figure points was a pleasing result. |

Review of 2020: Contests 121-130
So I put together a list of my favourite 40 BJSC discoveries of the year but waited until TBO was complete to reveal. 25 different countries are included with Persephonia and Terra Avium getting the most entries with 4, Fljotavik (all top half) and Dobago (all bottom half) get three each. Contest 129 ranks as the best with 7 entries, closely followed by 124 and 128 with 6, whilst 121 and 127 get just one each. Trying to remember to actually use this thread and post entries whilst the contest is happening...
BJSC 133: Wild Beasts - Two Dancers (ii) (Jon Hopkins Remix) This month I have gone against my normal method of choosing a BJSC entry by thinking about what current songs I'm loving and picking one that's relatively unknown that I either want to introduce or think might do well, the 83rd Utopia entry comes in the form of a 10 year old remix of Wild Beasts, close to artist recycling following lead singer Hayden Thorpe's entry in contest 114. This has been toward the top of the list of old(er) songs I'd like to sent to a contest on here at some point for a while now, so I thought I'd send something from that for a change! |

Greetings Utopia!
I’m just having a listen to your entry now, and who doesn’t appreciate good electronic music! This isn’t something I’ve heard before, but that’s great because I’m here to make new discoveries just like this! Waiting to see if a vocal comes into this soon or are we dealing with another rather lovely instrumental I might add. This is exactly the sort of song I seek out, so I expect it to do well in my points selection this month! I noticed we are in the same Semi which is nice, and I also noticed that my chosen entry by Mint Royale is one you have played in the past via last.fm. Oh there is a vocal in this song after all! Very eerie vocals I might add. . Wishing you a successful contest from Zanmatony! |

BJSC 134: Boards of Canada - XYZ
Following the end (just) of Utopia's record qualification streak, we go a bit riskier this month with the 8 minute electronic instrumental 'XYZ' from Boards of Canada, continuing the move away from current songs being enjoyed. XYZ was recorded in 1998 in a John Peel session but remained unreleased for more than two decades as sampling couldn't be cleared at the time. -- I've listened to bits and bobs of Boards of Canada over the years but this song is easily the most I've ever enjoyed them, completely captivated by the way it builds I find it so interesting. Cautiously optimistic over its performance and that it can have some appeal but ultimately won't be surprised with a finish in the bottom 5 of this month's semi. |

Giving this an update...
BJSC 135 - Perfume Genius - Describe (A.G. Cook Remix) - DNQ A second remix in three contests with both songs being the only two in nine to fail to qualify. Not overly expectant of a good result but thought it would have more appeal than it did. |

BJSC 136 - As December Falls - Tears - DNQ
A rare recycling of an artist, trying to do better than previous entry 'Ride' which fell a few points short, unfortunately the result was the same. No regrets in sending it, it was by far my favourite song of the year that I either hadn't already sent or wouldn't get vetoed. An entry which managed to alienate all of Utopia's natural base, 0 points in a semi from Cumulonimbia, Skall, Suedonia, Terra Avium and Fljótavík must be something of a rarity! If I try and introduce them to BuzzJack for a third time it'll have to be with their Pop Goes Punk cover of Little Mix *.* |

BJSC 137 - Desire Marea - Tavern Kween
Representing Utopia in Cumulonimbia this month is South African artist Deisre Marea with his current single Tavern Kween, a synthpop gem sung in native Zulu language. I'd like to think it can be Utopia's best performing entry of the year so far, not the strongest of targets but we shall see! |

Desire Marea was also behind one of my all time favourite BJSC spinoff entries (from the first Pride spinoff):
*.* I was confused for a moment when I noticed I was already subscribed to his channel despite having never heard of him before, turns out it is just because he is a member of FAKA but their music was uploaded to his personal channel! (or perhaps it was a FAKA channel at the time and since changed to be a solo one, not sure) |

BJSC 137 - Desire Marea - Tavern Kween Representing Utopia in Cumulonimbia this month is South African artist Deisre Marea with his current single Tavern Kween, a synthpop gem sung in native Zulu language. I'd like to think it can be Utopia's best performing entry of the year so far, not the strongest of targets but we shall see! This deserves to smash hard! I love it Mark - a synth-heavy banger that's perfect for the dance floor. *.* |

I’m loving this too - definitely my fave of yours for a little while. Just a shame I can’t actually vote for it
