United Kingdom

SuRie - Storm

QUOTE
Looking ahead to next year’s competition is the British national broadcaster, BBC, who have reportedly been in recent discussion with Sweden’s 2015 Eurovision winner Måns Zelmerlöw about the search for next year’s British representative.

Speaking to Aftonbladet following his commentary stint at the 2017 competition, commentating for the Swedish national broadcaster SVT alongside Edward af Sillén throughout the past Eurovision week, Zelmerlöw spoke of his recent move to London as well as about his talks with the BBC about possible plans for 2018:

"I spoke a little with the British producer. It would be fun to do something now while I’m in London. Be involved in their selection and see if we can help them in any way."

http://esctoday.com/148269/united-kingdom-mans-zelmerlow-join-search-next-british-entrant/

The Emmelie de Forest news was reported early October last year and that did end up being our entry! Mans seems to be incredibly popular after being involved with Eurovision for the third year in a row so it would be great to get him on board in some way and it would be another step forward for us.

Posted by: Lenny 15th May 2017, 02:53 PM

Interesting - perhaps he'll have an influence in getting the right songwriters on board, or perhaps try to influence us down the Melodifestivalen route if we're so incredibly lucky.

Posted by: Liаm 15th May 2017, 02:57 PM

It would be fab to do a Melfest-esque NF but we say this every year, and people wouldn't do it. Eurovision is godly in Sweden and loads of their biggest local artists will do it, whereas obviously over here it's seen as a joke, so we get X Factor rejects who've never had a hit. I don't think it's THAT bad of a joke it would kill the career of say Anne-Marie or Dua Lipa if they entered with a killer song, and as I seem to say every year I think it would be that route that could actually save the reputation a bit.

Posted by: danG 15th May 2017, 03:02 PM

A song like Ciao Adios probably would've been a top ten for us, but Anne-Marie would never do Eurovision as it's too big of a career risk.

Would be nice if we get Mans to write our next entry, perhaps we'll get another top 15 or hell, even another top 10.

Posted by: Silas 15th May 2017, 03:19 PM

I love him dearly and the fact that he's moved to London is making me reconsider my long held objections to the capital, but him being involved in the process is fab provided it's him linking us with the people's who will provide us with a banger like Kempe (who appears to be on the outs with Christer and SVT) I've just corrected myself, he does more writing than I thought but him alone risks a Barcelona sessions rather than a Heroes.

Any move towards a MF style NF is going to take a fundamental culture shift in the U.K. that'll never happen. The press and public treat it like a joke. As long as they do that they'll continue to unironically bitch about the uk doing poorly while refusing to accept that shite like Scooch simply has no place in ESC if you want to win

Posted by: RobBob 15th May 2017, 03:25 PM

Yeah, it's the writers I've got in mind, if Mans could have any influence with hooking us up with some strong Swedish writers, I'd be very happy with that.

Song submissions have opened, and former Icelandic entrant Greta Salóme has been attending some of the writing camps that Emmelie de Forest did last year.

Quality wise, that shows a bit of promise

But knowing the DUST that voters paid to Hear Them Calling..

Hurts still want to do it!

QUOTE
With touring comes experience. Both Theo and Adam are certainly experts in telling apart audiences from different European countries by now.

Which makes Hurts the perfect choice for Eurovision and something the BBC could seriously consider. In addition to that, they will know how to create a song that can cater for Europe’s general music tastes while remaining authentic to their own style.

Hurts have previously offered their services to the UK’s Eurovision committee. Their song was ready to be submitted but the duo decided to withdraw their bid after a suggestion that the composition should be performed by an old music legend or a reality TV star. Their reaction to this proposal was a short and decisive statement:

“No way, we’ve got this plan for how we’d win it.”

To this day, the band refuses to disclose the name of the song that was a part of their plan to win Eurovision. Hopefully, Theo and Adam remain enthusiastic about bringing the UK its first Eurovision win in 20 years.

I'm glad they're still optimistic about doing it after being snubbed in favour of Engelbert back in 2012.

OMG this MUST happen. Beautiful Ones from the new album had a shit-ton of Euro potential, shame they didn't save it for the rerelease...

Posted by: Suedehead2 29th October 2017, 03:11 PM

Yes, I read that story somewhere. Let's hope they finally get their chance.

Posted by: Chop-part-freak 29th October 2017, 08:10 PM

Hurts would be perfect. Magnificent would be magnificent for Eurovision. It SO would....

Posted by: ScottyEm 29th October 2017, 09:45 PM

Hurts are crazy huge in the Eastern Bloc. Would be marvellous agreed.

The BBC need to let Hurts have a go already - they are a credible act that has wanted to represent us for years. If they don’t get a chance soon they will end up representing one of the countries they are big in such as Russia.

Posted by: SKOB 2nd November 2017, 09:50 AM

I heard a rumout that Saara Aalto will do this?

Posted by: danVember 2nd November 2017, 09:55 AM

Hurts is too good of an opportunity for the BBC to miss, hope they go for that rather than yet another X Factor finalist (I'm aware Saara had a history with Finnish national finals before XF but I don't think she'd do any better than Lucie Jones) .

I'm interested! Good move for her as her audience seems to be mainly the Pride audience and mainstream pop will never be her thing

Eurovision: You Decide confirmed to be broadcasting from Brighton next year on WEDNESDAY 7th February, hosted by Mel Giedroyc and Måns Zelmerlöw!

The six songs and artists will apparently be revealed sometime in January

Posted by: AdamAloud 16th November 2017, 02:08 PM

And they've got Edward af Sillén on scriptwriting duties, should be a good show! Although a Wednesday seems a really strange choice.

Posted by: Mart!n 16th November 2017, 05:59 PM

In Brighton ohmy.gif Richard (Gooddelta) will be there with bells on biggrin.gif heehee.gif and probably half of Buzzjack members laugh.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 16th November 2017, 06:20 PM

I live and work in London these days so typically I probably won't be able to make it, being a Wednesday and all laugh.gif Love Brighton Dome though and I'm really impressed they've got Måns on board to co-present!

Måns presenting an Edward script will be a top notch show for sure.

Indeed it was mine too! I've seen a few acts play live in there too - Lucie Silvas, Natasha Bedingfield and a Radio 1 roadshow type gig with, of all people to be playing in the Brighton Dome, Beyonce *.* It's a lovely venue.

I’m sure this was during January this year... why so late this time? Unless I’m wrong of course.

Posted by: Ryan. 30th November 2017, 10:07 PM

In 2016 it was last week of February, this year it was last week of January so next year's will sort of be in between the two. Importantly it is still early enough this year to revamp in time for the March deadline (unlike in 2016).

I don't understand why they don't just give Hurts the job. They've said in the past that they want to do it. They have a bigger fan base in a lot of countries where the show is popular and they have the right sound. It also helps that Theo has great stage presence and having been to see them numerous times he can certainly sing. A fab song for them to have sung would be something along the lines of "Nothing will be bigger than us". Funnily enough I was listening to it at work and someone asked if that was the UK Eurovision entry as it sounded like a typical Eurovision track.

I think you'll find a lot of support for that view here. I'd love to see them do it. Sadly, they have never enjoyed much success in the UK but, OTOH, that means they don't have a lot to lose. it won't do them any harm in the parts if Europe where they are already popular and, if they do well, it might even raise their profile at home.

Yes, that's exactly how I feel. In the countries where Eurovision is popular they are known so it would get them some votes (hopefully) and in the U.K. as they're relatively unknown it might raise their promotion for the good.

I have it on GOOD AUTHORITY that there is at least ONE CAST-IRON BANGER in this selection on the lines of COOL ME DOWN WITH TRIBAL BEATS

What language is that - ADHD?

Anyway, I hang on to the hope that we can spring a winner out of nowhere in the same way Germany, Austria and Portugal have done this decade... we can find our mojo! And a tribal banger sounds epic, as long as it isn't sung by Danyl Johnson laugh.gif

Oooh interesting, I heard there was a "End of Time era Beyonce meets Pop Era Nicki Minaj" song that they were desperately chasing a certain X Factor runner-up for (but who turned it down) - I don't think that sounds like the same song but you never know.

The Sun Showbiz has "confirmed" Rachel Clarke "a backing singer for a Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams tribute" with a song called Crazy written by "up anc coming" songwriter Samir Elshay. Huge star xxx Start as we mean to go on.

They also said she's competing against "five other nobodies" - savage af. I know reality rejects are still "nobodies" but I wonder if they're just being sav or is it just random people this time and they know all 6? laugh.gif I know we won't get like Ed Sheeran, Little Mix and Adele but a dependable old XF fave was fine last year.

I love the fact that that article has a headline about Ken Bruce but then doesn't mention him at all. I assume it means that he will be playing the songs on his show tomorrow (today if you're being picky).

SuRie being a backing vocallist for Blanche & Loic Nottet at Eurovision definitely makes me interested to see if she'll have something a little bit more avant-garde up her sleeve.

Quite. So annoying because if it had the climax it deserves it would be a fantastic entry. My favourite is Raya (whose song was co-written by Greta Salóme), the 'oooh ah you're on my mind' bit is already in my head after one listen.

Legends really is UTTERLY DYING for the second chorus to smash into a double chorus where it ALL GOES OFF

But that said if it HAD ONE I'd be screaming HARROGATE 2019 right now so that may well be an active decision on the BBC's part

Posted by: Cameron 24th January 2018, 01:01 PM

Legends needs a few tweaks but I’d a bop
I also like crazy

Posted by: Jonjo 24th January 2018, 01:10 PM

Goldstone: What kind of bop is this! *.* I really like this but I don't think this is "the one" as Jahq said!

Jaz Ellington: Keep it.

SuRie: Bland af. If her voice was better/more suited to the song I feel like it could've been a half decent, choose to listen out of choice bop.

Raya: Ooh. This is good. I feel like the production in the choruses could be a bit beefier/stronger, but the potential is there! But we need that oompf!

Liam Tamne: So basic, but it's ok. Very 5 out of 10. Not what we need.

Asanda: It's the closest we're gonna get to 'Cool Me Down'... it's great! PULL THROUGH ASANDA! Looking forward to sweing how she does with this live!

1st: Asanda
2nd: Goldstone
3rd: Raya (oops forgot I enjoyed hers - she doesn't deserve to be thrown away with the others)

Keep the rest.

1. Legends
2. Astronaut
3. I Feel The Love
4. Crazy
5. Storms
6. You

Posted by: gooddelta 24th January 2018, 01:46 PM

They're all ok to good actually.

Crazy and Legends are my favourites, I also like I Feel The Love. I'm not sure any would do any better than Lucie did at Eurovision though? They're all 8.5/10 tracks, not 'I MUST pick up my phone and vote for this over all others'.

I don't really mind any of the other three either, a huge step up in quality on last year's selection.

It's a shame nobody looked at Legends during the songwriting process though and said what the rest of us were thinking. It could have so easily been a 10/10 with a little outside advice and extra time and effort spent on it.

Posted by: Midge 24th January 2018, 02:39 PM

Asanda - really like this one, well produced. It has all the ingredients of a big hit. Kind of reminds me of "Wings" by Little Mix mixed with "Children Of The Universe" by Molly mixed with say, something Galantis, Sigala or John Gibbons would've put out recently.

Raya - another well produced one, if Asanda doesn't win this is a decent alternative.

SuRie - this just has the bland factor. Like, it could be a lot better, but it is just blah - it'd be received like Levina's "Perfect Life" I think.

Goldstone - this is quite dire, I hope we don't opt for this... are some of you seriously calling this a bop? laugh.gif It's embarrassing! But each to their own...

Liam Tamne - I'm torn between thinking this is alright and bland. Either way we have better in our selection.

Jaz Ellington - blah, this would flop at Eurovision. It wouldn't even make the final!

Posted by: RobBob 24th January 2018, 02:42 PM

Legends is great, definitely the stand out of the pack and for me, the only one that kind of feels “natural”, we know they’ve all come from these writing camps but her voice and delivery kinda sounds like she wrote it and it was always intended for her, the others all kind of feel a bit empty and soulless in that respect.

I do agree it could do with a bit of more oomph as it goes on, but they made tweaks to Lucie so it’s not out of the equation they could do here - either way, it’s got much more potential than the others.

Posted by: Liаm 24th January 2018, 04:14 PM

Legends could easily be Margaret's MF entry with a bit of a tweak! I agree it's the best but it does need that extra tweak and it could be the next level. It just needs the production to pop a bit more, maybe a drop, and it's set.

I Feel The Love is enough of a bop, in a Stooshe or Parade leaked album sampler kind of way laugh.gif Probably my 2nd fave behind Legends but we shouldn't send it. It's the sort of thing that like Lithuania would have in their NF and everyone wold have it as their fave solely because the rest of the entries are utter shite.

You can be FLUSHED tbh, "sends me to sleep like rum and whiskey" indeed. It's not even passable enough to be lie Ed Sheeran, it's more like a John Legend album track or sth :/

Astronaut is giving me Real Friends/Love Yourself vibe in the instrumental but the vocals seem like he can't be arsed. Could be much worse but it's really not the entry we need. It's really just basic album track filler that would be on any given male singer-songwriter album as track 9.

Crazy feels a bit demo-ish but as with Legends it could easily be a MF entry if it was a bit beefier. With a revamp it could be ok as an entry in a 21st place kind of way though I guess.

Storm is again just ok, her voice definitely doesn't fit it. She kind of sounds like a demo a songwriter would sing to pitch this to the actual singer laugh.gif

Overall, you can really tell that they've come from these writing camps, they're mostly a bit formulaic and I'd agree with soulless actually bar Legends. The songs are, in essence, there but they're stifled under bland or basic production, Legends is our only option but it needs a bit more to it. 8.5/10 kind of bop laugh.gif

01 Legends
=gap=
02 I Feel The Love
03 Crazy
==gap===
04 Storm
05 Astronaut
====huge gap===
06 You

I love Legends, probably the one that sticks out from the rest. Than Su Rie followed by Goldstone

3 of them are rather crap

Posted by: Cameron 24th January 2018, 04:43 PM

Ok, I am fully behind Legends. Asanda better bring us a dance breakdown for the chorus!

Posted by: troylovesmusic 24th January 2018, 04:45 PM

Legends is a BOP it’s sounds so current and different to the usual songs we would send to Eurovision. It has to win please !

Posted by: Cameron 24th January 2018, 04:46 PM

Get Stefflon Don on Legends.

Posted by: Mart!n 24th January 2018, 04:50 PM

Yeah, Legends does need something else to it, just needs tweaking a bit, mind you we all said the same thing last year with Lucie.

And that ended up in us getting a far better result than we deserved!

Knowing from last year that the BBC are willing and able to fine tune the song that gets picked makes me cautiously optimistic if Legends were to get picked because it really is just a tweak rather than a complete redesign.

But really the biggest take away for me is that the six songs aren’t all different flavours of the same thing rather than last year’s six ‘inspirational ballads and midtempos’ brief. There’s six songs in different styles that are all at a reasonable level of good. It feels like incremental progress but in the right direction at least.

Probably my 2nd fave behind Legends but we shouldn't send it. It's the sort of thing that like Lithuania would have in their NF and everyone wold have it as their fave solely because the rest of the entries are utter shite.

Love this description laugh.gif SO true!

Posted by: Iz 24th January 2018, 05:59 PM

I got chills listening to Legends for the first time. SEND THIS. I could get proper patriotic for that in a way I haven't been able to for anything from this new format before. (and it's something that everyone else likes as well, how unusual biggrin.gif this should be a good sign)

Crazy sounds pretty good, would have been better than anything last year but next to Asanda it pales a bit. Storm has a lovely piano line and it goes pleasingly upbeat, I like it but it would get lost too easily.

Goldstone's a bit underwhelming girlband, not bad but not too good, Jaz is a complete non-starter for my tastes (although if anything here is doing Eurovision winner-following, not the same type of ballad but the sort of song that similar 'real music bores' go for, it's this one so this could be unexpectedly dangerous), Astronaut is dull and a bit chart-chasing too.

So Asanda needs to win but I wouldn't be too affronted to have Raya or SuRie representing us.

Posted by: Dart 24th January 2018, 06:09 PM

Are these on iTunes / Spotify?

Posted by: Mikee1981 24th January 2018, 06:11 PM

Same as above when 'Legends' started I got chills.... both Legends and Crazy sound good and with a bit of tweeking could be really impacting on the night with good staging ...for me

1 - Asanda
2 - RAYA
3 - GoldStone
$ - SuRie
5 - Liam Tamne
6 - Jaz Ellington

Posted by: Brett-Butler 24th January 2018, 06:33 PM

Goldstone is my favourite of the bunch, very Little Mix. Definitely can see "Legends" do well if she goes all Fleur East in the chorus at the night.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 24th January 2018, 07:12 PM

Legends certainly is very instant, it needs a bit more beefing up in the production as others have said, but it's our best bet of moderate success out of this bunch. Storm is quite nice too, I Feel Love is charming, but feels a bit dated and cheesy and not the direction we should be going in. The other three would kill our hopes before they started, terrible. (I guess I'm alone with Crazy, but it feels like an unfinished demo?)

omg Asanda the BGT icon is back *.*

She's such a star, I haven't listened to it yet but she better win

Posted by: Botchia 24th January 2018, 09:36 PM

Okay I've actually listened and everything is pretty shet apart from Legends, which would easily be our best entry in years. Of course that means the public won't pick her rolleyes.gif

Posted by: Liаm 24th January 2018, 09:39 PM

I've got a horrible feeling we'll pick Astronaut as that feels quite Sound Of nominee album track drama.gif We made the right choice last time but Lucie had a sort of inoffensive ballad and they were all quite similar anyway and she just did it best. But fingers crossed because even looking objectively surely ANYONE can see that Legends is the best option...

Posted by: troylovesmusic 24th January 2018, 10:00 PM

Posted by: Dart 24th January 2018, 11:02 PM

Posted by: nigels 25th January 2018, 08:23 AM

Has to be Legends, with a couple of tweaks and a massive dance break.

Best song we will have sent in years.

Posted by: Suedehead2 25th January 2018, 11:19 AM

Just heard Astronaut on Ken Bruce's show. It was so bland that I can't remember anything about it.

Posted by: Midge 25th January 2018, 12:58 PM

"Legends" is definitely the one. I've still got the hook and bassline from the chorus stuck in my head.

A few days in and Legends is the only song I’m really going back to. It’s a really strong little song!

So fingers crossed for Asanda, even though I doubt it would go top 10 at Eurovision. It would at least be a high quality, relevant entry that we could be proud of.

Agreed. It’s Legends and everything else is way, way behind. We’ve shown we can do class staging with Lucie and it paid off (sort of). I think this has enough impact to go top ten IMO, although it’s not the best example of its genre. So as long as we don’t have other better songs of this kind in Lisbon, we could get those desperately needed televotes.

okay but why are any of them being considered when HURTS want to do it?
like, they’re credible and they’ve had success in Europe. Plus, they know their way around a pop song.. it’s baffling.

Just a quick message for Buzzjackers who are going on Wednesday. There is a pro-EU demo planned for 6:30 - 7:00. The timing should mean that you can still get in on time, but it's worth bearing in mind. I hope you will want to give the demonstrators a friendly wave - I might even be one of them biggrin.gif

Asanda is odds on to win on Wednesday...

1. Asanda
2. Jaz Elington
3. Goldstone
4. RAYA
5. SuRie
6. Liam Tamne

Shocked RAYA is only 4th there. But seriously, come on Asanda!

TOMORROW'S NATIONAL FINAL...
UNITED KINGDOM

Eurovision: You Decide

7th February 2018
Begins at 7.30pm in the UK or 8.30pm Central European Time.
Programme is scheduled to last 1 hour 30 minutes.

Watch the selection via the https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/live/bbctwo.

Running Order (TBA)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ytx5c8KQymI

Voting
Voting will be done by 50% jury and 50% televoting. Rochelle Humes, Tom Fletcher and Rylan are the panellists on the show and we would assume they will be voting on the jury as was the case last year. The BBC are very hush hush when it comes to voting and results so we will probably not know the full results tomorrow night, just the winner.

The Favourites
Asanda is the clear favourite across all the bookmakers currently. She's by far and away the winner on YouTube as well, currently on 155k views compared to second place RAYA on 73k. If there was to be an upset then Jaz Ellington, RAYA or even Goldstone are considered by the bookies to be the next most likely victors.

Posted by: RobBob 6th February 2018, 03:26 PM

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I very much DO trust the public. They got it right the last 2 years in my opinion and the people who vote will more than likely all be big Eurovision fans who know what will work. I can't see Asanda not standing out on the night.

Posted by: Styles Bilinski 6th February 2018, 03:44 PM

I agree, Joe & Jake were my first choice and although Lucie wasn't on the night, I do think she was the best choice with the power of hindsight. Asanda is such the overwhelming favourite amongst fans and this is why I think releasing the songs a couple of weeks in advance this year has worked well because it's given more chance for hype to build.

I imagine that Rylan and Rochelle will be digging "Legends" too

Posted by: Ryan. 6th February 2018, 04:15 PM

Surprisingly I trust the public much more than the jury, if it was an international jury Asanda would win fine but not as convinced that she’ll win a national jury for some reason

Posted by: Jerick 6th February 2018, 05:58 PM

Does anyone know if this will be streamed through eurovision.tv?

Posted by: Klaus 6th February 2018, 06:11 PM

I’ve not listened to any apart from a preview clip of Asanda but if it’s going to be Asanda v Jazz, I can predict the panel’s favourite:

Rylan: Asanda
Tom: Jazz
Rochelle: the last placer

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 6th February 2018, 06:20 PM

Just given them a listen - SuRie is my favourite although I wouldn't mind most of them getting it. Jaz sounds very Eurovision-y in the fact that they've stuck a bunch of words that sounds absolutely ridiculous together in order to make it rhyme.

Posted by: Cameron 6th February 2018, 07:32 PM

Hopefully they give Jaz an early slot to get him out the way

Posted by: ScottyEm 7th February 2018, 05:37 PM

Brilliant perf from RAYA, I wouldn't mind that with a ramped up stage show in Lisbon.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 7th February 2018, 07:51 PM

The live staging's improved it, but it's still a middling effort. Not winner material.

Posted by: Midge 7th February 2018, 07:52 PM

Raya's song fell flat live there I think. I like some aspects of it, but it seemed so vacuous. And this is my backup choice...

Posted by: Alpha. 7th February 2018, 07:53 PM

It'd get completely lost. I'd predict 23rd or lower!

Oooooh SuRie was good (but she lost it a bit at the end there), I can see her springing an upset potentially.

SuRie - Storms

This is translating really well live I think. Much stronger than I imagined it would. Still a bit too basic for me though.

The crowd being really behind this song is making me feel better about our chances, the fact that they're all seemingly that into it tells me it's quite instant? Plus I'm growing to like it tbh, it's just... ugh. We FINALLY had songs like 'Legends' and 'Crazy' RIGHT THERE and we send possibly the most MOR mid-tempo... ughhhh

Posted by: Iz 7th February 2018, 09:03 PM

To be entirely FAIR, Storms would have been my second choice. But I dismissed it at the start because there's no way it's doing anything. Clearly she did a bit better live than it sounds on record but we're already getting the ranks filled up with songs like this, and this will not stand out.

Gonna have fun not being patriotic again. It's the best, you all should try it.

Like, the only way this is going to do decently is if it performs like Lucie did and basically run up all of her score on the jury vote and accept the pittance on the televotes. I am...not at all confident that this is going to do that however though.

Get that revamp coming!

Posted by: Chez Wombat 7th February 2018, 09:20 PM

Oh I missed this. Storm was a quite decent track and was my 2nd favourite so it's not that bad, but it didn't unfortunately strike me as something that can stand out and finish above around 20th. Idk if I'm being as pessimistic as others here tho, Legends would've been the best choice for sure, but at least we didn't pick a sure no-hoper like the other four would've been.

Posted by: Midge 7th February 2018, 09:21 PM

I think I'd be more bothered if I felt Asanda nailed "Legends"... she didn't, too much of it came across as average despite the first verse being the best part of the show.

Bit gutted Asanda lost out but it wouldn't have been a worthy win based on the performance! Storm is a decent song for Eurovision I guess but I don't think I'd be listening to it otherwise. Allso dunno if it's just me being judgemental but I didn't warm to SuRie very much - she seemed pretty awkward and not really the best person to sell the song?

She didn't actually write the second "Storm" though

Posted by: Ryan. 7th February 2018, 09:44 PM

SuRie gave the best performance of the night, after her performance it seemed pretty sure she was going to win - I was looking at the odds too but you could just tell by the arena reaction. I think it's a mistake, Legends was still the best song and Asanda just needed (a lot of) backing vocal help which I'm sure they could have achieved - Sweden manage it all the time. Storm won't get out of bottom 5 (a bit of jury support as its professional enough to appear in a few jury top 10s, nothing from televote = Joe and Jake) whereas Legends had at least a sniff of a chance if there was significant improvement. And if there wasn't, 25th/26th compared to SuRie's 24th isn't a big loss.

If Legends was sent to Lisbon with that performance, it would’ve tanked. A truly wasted opportunity. As nice as “Storm” is, and indeed performed very well, I can’t see how such a tepid song can be lifted out of the bottom 5. I’m think single figures from the televotes again...

Posted by: Klaus 7th February 2018, 11:08 PM

It sounds like one of those songs the public thinks sounds ‘Eurovision’ and therefore should do well where in fact it’s a song that is seen every year in multiple forms and therefore fades into the background and is completely forgettable.

Posted by: Frooot 7th February 2018, 11:18 PM

Tbf, 'Legends' is far superior but judging by tonights performance, how could anyone vote 'Legends'? It was an incredibly disappointing performance and very very shaky. I'm not a massive 'Storm' fan and I think 'Legends' is far superior but 'Storm' sounded 100000 times better especially for casual viewers. 'Storm' does need a lot of tweaking to it though.

Posted by: Suedehead2 7th February 2018, 11:18 PM

OK, here's my verdict. I went for something to eat after the show so have only just got back.

Crazy - good start to the show but not outstanding.
Astronaut - This did nothing for me when I heard it on the radio but the live performance was a lot better. It's all very well telling him to move about a bit more, but whose idea was it to put him on a small box?
Legends - I wasn't a fan when I first heard it, but the performance tonight was very good. It's hard to believe she's only sixteen.
Jaz - A bit of a comedown after the last performance but it went down well, Jaz has a great voice but I don't think this song was right for Eurovision.
SuRie - This got the audience going very early on. Yes, it's almost too Eurovision but it went down a storm (sorry).
Goldstone - They must have heard the reaction to SuRie so they were always up against it. By the time they got half way through with little noise from the audience, they must have known they had no chance. The fact that somebody had torn their costumes just before they went on can't have helped. When I first heard it on the radio it sounded very like Little Mix. Tonight there seemed to be a little bit of Vince Clarke-era Depeche Mode as well.

On the night, the best performer won. I certainly felt that the audience response to the result was genuine and not just a hyped-up reaction to whoever won. After the first four songs, Legends was clearly the favourite but the Essex girl blew the opposition away.

Posted by: Jonjo 7th February 2018, 11:23 PM

I think it's the sort of song that some people would have loved while other would have hated it. Of course, as most people will only vote for one song, that doesn't have to be a bad thing.

Yaknow, now that the dust has settled, I can see that this is a good revamp away from a pretty good entry but they'd need to have Clean Bandit type production with the integration of the strings and synths. After they did a good job with Lucie's song last year I'd like to think that they've got that in them but the proof will be in the pudding (and even then we're running into the Joe and Jake "people like it but don't love it enough to motivate them to cast televotes for it" syndrome where you end up accidentally bottom 3)

Also what I noticed from a rewatch, SuRie was the only one of the six acts tonight to look down the camera from the word go which probably helped her on the televote front.

That's an interesting point about looking down the camera. Obviously I couldn't see that. It is widely regarded as one of the reasons why Nick Clegg was seen to have "won" the first television debate on the 2010 election.

A Clean Bandit production would be good - violins often seem to go down well biggrin.gif

I've just watched Storm as it was seen on television. It didn't seem to get across just how much impact it made in the Dome. That suggests it needs some work before May.

We can’t just jump straight to a Melfest style show. It needs to be built to over time.

I think Legends would have been better if they’d given her a headset microphone she was too much flailing hands. Unfortunately you can’t base your vote on what it *might* look like in May.

The girl band were surprisingly better than I was led to believe.

Did anyone else think the audience looked a bit dead for most of the performances?

Not within just over a year of each other though. And the first was as Wham!

J-Lo had two songs called "Ain't It Funny" with one of them being dubbed "The Murder Remix" despite being two completely unrelated separate tracks (and they were released within a year from each other). Doesn't feel all that strange to me that she has two songs of the same name seeing how the original one didn't exactly set the world alight lmao.

IIRC some other pop artists have had singles sharing a name with album tracks in the past as well. It's on the tip of my tongue but I'm not finding it right now lol.

Leona Lewis has two tracks called I Got You doesn't she? Her 2009 single and an album track from 2015.

Well I'm a bit gutted, we finally had chance to send something totally out there, high energy, fierce, current in Asanda and we go for the generic option of SuRie, the reaction in the dome was huge but scanning the audience it looked like majority middle aged men.

I'm not totally convinced with SuRie's voice it doesnt seem to fit a dance anthem and like someone else said she doesn't seem to come across well, she seemed cold to me, like others have said Clare Maguire would of fitted it well. I know Asanda may of been a little off but it was a pure package, her and RAYA .I'm glad that they had dancers and routines and showed what can be done with staging.

Felt for GoldStone at the end I dont think anyone was interested in their performance everyone seemed to be stood still or on phones.

The song is "okay" but highly unlikely to be troubling the top 10 of any televote or jury in May. Maybe a great revamp and good staging could help lift it though.

You mean middle-aged men like me laugh.gif

Goldstone really got the short straw in having to come on after SuRie. As I said before, they must have known about half way through their song that they had no chance. It must have been really dispiriting for them. The other acts probably came to the same conclusion when the clips of the songs were shown. Unless the television audience thought very differently from the live audience, the result was a foregone conclusion.

BTW, as a Brighton & Hove Albion fan, I was very disappointed that their was no mention of the old Goldstone Ground.

Did they show Orinoco walking across the stage on the television? Mel and Mans didn't say anything laugh.gif

Posted by: LexC 2nd March 2018, 12:07 PM

And yeah, with this song that’s not happening.

Posted by: Iz 2nd March 2018, 12:43 PM

There's also a lot of factors yet to come into play, other entries as yet unchosen, running order etc, but it's not exactly an unusual sound, meaning there's likely to be entries aiming for the same target market, this particular one not being one that even gets the votes rolling in, and it's not exactly being sung by an outstanding singer.

If at this early stage we're thinking it probably won't do particularly well, that's really not a good sign. Revamp is absolutely needed to avoid the bottom lot and I wouldn't be too sure that it can get much further above it even with.

Posted by: Liаm 2nd March 2018, 01:00 PM

We've won 5 times and had something like 15 further top 3s iirc laugh.gif SuRie will be lucky to finish 20 places lower than that. Iz is right, we're all thinking it's hopeless now so it's got no chance now, and we've still got half the entries to come. It feels like bottom few as it is and we've got countries who always do well, potential contenders etc to confirm which is only gonna push her down a few more places.

Posted by: Mikee1981 2nd March 2018, 02:27 PM

I can't see them changing it that drastically but I hope they do as that's definitely what it needs imo. I'd prefer Clean Bandit vibes but either of those would be fine and make it pop a bit more because as it is it's just bland and doesn't stand out at all.

Female mid to uptempo pop entries are coming in thick and fast now and this already pales in comparison to Australia, Cyprus, Azerbaijan and I think the latter is even a borderline qualifier so Storm needs massive elevation to get itself into the midtable.

Posted by: rafik4u 5th March 2018, 11:46 PM

Very optimistic comments I read on this thread. Unless they change the song completely, this is very #26 this year.

If Azerbaijan and Australia make the final (and given their records I don't see why they wouldn't) then we are coming stone dead last, revamp or not.

That's even bearing in mind that I don't see anything Australia has that this hasn't but I'm sure it'll do the business just because Australia.

Posted by: LexC 6th March 2018, 10:59 PM

So essentially they've taken it down a key since she can't manage the high notes.

I honestly struggle to see this getting above 26th in the televote.

Posted by: Cameron 6th March 2018, 11:04 PM

They pushed for this yet have to make it even worse than it is? Lmao BBC is a joke

Posted by: Liаm 6th March 2018, 11:23 PM

Legit only the BBC could make an already flat song WEAKER via revamp laugh.gif

Posted by: Midge 7th March 2018, 03:01 AM

I hear differently, it sounds like they've added more atmosphere to the backing (a la Lucie's song) though it hasn't drastically changed. The song doesn't sound as bad either, though that might just be because I'm coming around to it a bit. Still expect a bottom end result though.

I do think the verses are dull and piss poor.

Posted by: gooddelta 7th March 2018, 07:34 AM

So bland. They’ve removed some of the nice string flourishes before the chorus too which was one of the only bits I particularly liked about it :/

Posted by: ScottyEm 7th March 2018, 07:52 AM

I like the verses but the chorus is made worse IMO, it was half way here to being a dance-ish track but they decided to go the other way and make something that will most likely fall into a middle territory and basically come bottom 5. Annoying as she is clearly far, far better than this tepid song.

Posted by: AdamAloud 7th March 2018, 09:42 AM

I can't even begin to understand just quite HOW they've managed to make it WORSE.

@BBC Call 7th Heaven before it's too late!

Posted by: Peter30 7th March 2018, 10:21 AM

Even blander than it was before somehow. The fact that they've taken the whole bloody thing down a key to accommodate her spontaneous money note that went badly awry now being part of the actual song doesn't help matters.

Posted by: Cameron 7th March 2018, 10:26 AM

She just doesn’t have the vocals to carry this

I am surprised how little they changed about this. It's got a bit more depth I suppose, but it seems questionably worth the money they'll have spent on it. I wonder if they have a lot of confidence in the song as it is.

And just look at the current lineup we've got and tell me that either of those two songs wouldn't have stood out massively from the pack and in a good way.

It's all just so frustrating that we can never seem to have two good/making progress years on the trot.

Posted by: Klaus 7th March 2018, 07:26 PM

They must dedicate one household’s licence fee for the budget for the music videos for our entries. Maybe even that’s too expensive laugh.gif

One thing that bugs me about the song is that it feels as though they couldn’t decide what Middle 8 to have so they stuck both in there and it really stops the song flowing. I would have liked the first Middle 8 to be the sole one.

Posted by: RobBob 8th March 2018, 12:47 PM

The problem really isn't that it's a bad song, it is catchy, it is melodic, it has a hook and it is a 'good' song but unfortunately in a pack of 26, a pretty good pop song is gonna flounder. I wish they'd made it string-ier and really played with the drama of the track, now it's just even more generic and run of the mill. I can't even really imagine how they can stage this in a way that will elevate it greatly.

We’d get more media interest if a known current name was doing it in the run up to the contest. Bit of a circular problem.
