BuzzJack Music Forum _ Ariana Grande _ Don't Call Me Angel (Ariana, Miley Cyrus & Lana Del Rey)

Posted by: Wall 18th June 2019, 12:34 PM

I'm guessing this will be released on the new EP 'She Is Here' and is maybe why 'Mothers Daughter' is not getting a full promotional campaign.

Posted by: UltraME! 18th June 2019, 12:35 PM

FINALLY! I've been waiting for this forever ahhh

Posted by: Jade 18th June 2019, 12:42 PM

I assume it was actually meant to be the lead for Miley's album before she decided to release four EP's instead, I think she's just trying to find her favourite sound and if she had released an album it would have been too much of a mixture of genres. I also think this does explain why there's no music video for 'Mothers Daughter' and why it's not getting the push it deserves. I'm guessing this is coming late July.

Posted by: Bré 18th June 2019, 12:58 PM

This... seems like a bit of a weird combination?

Posted by: Bjork 18th June 2019, 01:00 PM

not sure about this :/ rather Lana stay away from those 2 biggrin.gif

Posted by: travis 18th June 2019, 01:05 PM

3 of my favorite artists on one track!? Wow, what a moment. I am so ready for this! Excited to see how the three of them will mix it up together on one track.

Can honestly see this being an a streaming smash, there's no way that it wont debut in the top three.

Posted by: Wall 19th June 2019, 12:34 PM

Miley liked a similar tweet on Insta, it's apparently coming very soon (JULY). Shocked to see Miley move on from this EP so fast! I can see her dropping Mothers Daughter MV then dropping this very shortly after like what Ariana did with Breathin and TUN.

The next EP is in July, and then the third is coming even sooner than the second.

Posted by: Wall 19th June 2019, 01:47 PM

coming to break records for having four albums go top 10 in one year?

I wonder if she will just put all the good songs together with an extra few to make an album at the end of the year?

Posted by: Bjork 19th June 2019, 02:43 PM

^ well She is coming peaked at 18

Posted by: Wall 19th June 2019, 02:54 PM

USA.

Posted by: Botchia 20th June 2019, 05:48 AM

Omg the collab of the year if true!!

Posted by: Cqmerqn 22nd June 2019, 08:45 PM

It’s billed as

Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus & Lana Del Rey - Angels

As part of Charlie’s Angels soundtrack

Posted by: Jade 22nd June 2019, 08:47 PM

Ahhhh how exciting!! This is going to be so fierce.

(Could this pretty please be moved to the Ariana forum if she's actually lead artist? I lack the power to do that)

Edit: thanks Joseph!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 23rd June 2019, 12:32 PM

I think this should do well.

It’ll do better than MONOPOLY at least bc Miley is a huge name who shares a similar fan base to Ari and Lana also has a strong fanbase in her own right too.

So the instrumental clip from yesterday was for this song indeed! Hyped to hear the whole thing now, it sounds promising <3 you can't really hear much (if any?) of Lana in the trailer though!

Ooh someone has pieced together all the parts of the song that we can hear in the trailer:

I haven't been this hyped for a release in so long! I wonder how long we'll have to wait for the studio version, since the movie isn't coming out until November. Ari to drip-feed parts of the soundtrack starting at least a few months in advance please.

Posted by: Wall 28th June 2019, 03:42 PM

Next two weeks apparently

Posted by: Jade 14th July 2019, 01:29 PM

Finally a bit more news:

Not sure when Ari is filming (or if she just hasn't been spotted) but exciting nonetheless. Lana's outfit *.* I'm so ready!

Posted by: Jack 9th September 2019, 04:33 PM

Do we think this will go straight in at #01?!

Posted by: Jade 9th September 2019, 04:43 PM

I hope so! We've had THREE months of build-up for this so the hype definitely feels there, Ariana recently got to #4 with 'boyfriend' (with a practically unknown featuring artist, Lana and Miley are way bigger draws) and Lana's just had her highest selling first-week album sales since 2014. It's hard to say without actually hearing the song but I definitely feel like there's potential for it to go to #1 as long as it isn't a dud. It did sound promising from the trailer though! Ahhh cannot wait to hear it in full.

Posted by: LewisGT 9th September 2019, 04:43 PM

Yay! Cannot wait to hear this!

Posted by: Jonjo 9th September 2019, 04:55 PM

Why do I get the feeling this will be one of those that does well, but gets cries of "LMAO such an underperformance!!!" from the get go?! Ugh. I really, REALLY hope it's good and a hit. Sick of Grime and Rap taking over the charts. puke.gif

Posted by: Jack 9th September 2019, 05:08 PM

I know how you feel, all the underperformances from Camila, Zara, Miley, Katy & Normani have been disheartening - it's hard to get excited by a big female release potentially doing well! sad.gif

I'm so so happy to be proven wrong though!

Posted by: Wall 10th September 2019, 04:27 AM

It will at least debut top three everywhere worldwide, hopefully it gets massive Spotify exposure and #1 on every playlist, although hot hits uk is so slow these days

yessss!!

I think this will easily debut top 5.

Hoping bc boyfriend managed #4 this could well outpeak that and have a stronger first week because Miley and Lana are bigger names than Social House. And it’s also likely that fans of Miley are also fans of Ariana and also likewise with Lana too to an extent.

The longevity of this all depends on the actual song itself but it’s gonna have a strong opening week (pls Dethrone Ed from #1).

Music Video:

Posted by: SKOB 13th September 2019, 05:36 AM

This was kinda hot mess and the song was clearly from Miley's sessions with Alma & others. Very similar to Mother's Daughter. It's catchy!

Posted by: Jonjo 13th September 2019, 05:49 AM

Yeah, it's v catchy! Lana's voice worked really well. I can see this being a big hit for them which is pleasing.

I need it to grow on me a little more, but I like it!

Posted by: Monica Lottinsky 13th September 2019, 05:57 AM

omg this is so good

Lana’s bit!!!!!!

Posted by: Cody Burnett 13th September 2019, 06:00 AM

Honestly it wouldn't have been different from any other Ariana song (which isn't bad, it's just something we've heard so much since thank u, next was released) had it not been for Lana. Her breathy voice in the middle 8 sells it for me.

Posted by: Jack 13th September 2019, 06:25 AM

LOVE this, a bop! I get the Mother's Daughter comparisons too but that's one of my fave songs of the year so I'm here for it.

Posted by: Jade 13th September 2019, 06:27 AM

I really wasn’t sure how Lana was going to work but wow she killed her part and it felt right! The song was really instant for me (which is a bit of a relief after ‘boyfriend’) and I loved seeing them all together in the video wub.gif

YouTube views are over a million already, yay! Also there are plenty of https://t.co/03WxtSxbN3 to buy already if anyone’s interested. I’m tempted by the picture disc vinyl, although I wish the artwork was a little more exciting kink.gif

Posted by: kye 13th September 2019, 07:10 AM

the physicals ship on january 3, 2020?!

Posted by: HausofF 13th September 2019, 07:20 AM

This is absolutely incredible and exactly what I'd have wanted from these names. PERFORM IT ON TOUR ARI BITCH

Posted by: Wall 13th September 2019, 08:01 AM

Amazing

The video is great too

Posted by: 365 13th September 2019, 08:07 AM

The video is a full popstar moment. The song isn't quite as good and a bit underwritten but I'm stanning it regardless. Lana's is the best part, even though it sounds like it should be in another song.

Posted by: Jade 13th September 2019, 08:07 AM

I'm really appreciating Miley's part more on further listens too. She really attacks it. I'm pleased with what all three of them brought <3 I was going to resist spamming at work but the synth line of the production alone was stuck in my head lmao so I had to for a bit in the background laugh.gif soooo catchy.

Omg at that shipping date Kye?! It really is a waiting game with these releases, the 'boyfriend' vinyl isn't getting shipped until December either :')

I didn't even think about the possibility of this being added on tour Bal, argh! But I guess it wouldn't be out of the realms of possibility, with Ariana chopping and changing bits since the tour started. It could work if Miley and Lana's bits are just played on the screen or something.

So excited to hear more of this soundtrack!

Posted by: *Tim 13th September 2019, 08:20 AM

This sounds so messy

Posted by: coi 13th September 2019, 08:27 AM

Honestly I'm disappointed by this, I thought it would be a lot better considering how much I like the names involved. sad.gif But like others have said it does sound a bit of a mess and I definitely get the Mother's Daughter comparisons too. Lana's bit doesn't really fit in well but I'd say it's my favourite part of the song! Hoping it's a grower.

Posted by: blacksquare 13th September 2019, 08:56 AM

The Ariana fatigue is real — Miley has so much bite in her verse and Lana obviously offers something else in the middle 8 (something from a superior song...), but Ariana just sounds dull in comparison and brings the energy down.

It's hard not to find it all a little undercooked

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef 13th September 2019, 09:04 AM

Lana's bit is the only good part sad.gif It sounds like clown music sad.gif No wonder Miley rejected it from the solo albums!

Lana CHANNELLING Posh Spice!! She would totally be Posh in any girlbanf. Yasss Lana!! Also Billie Ellish did the angel wings better. Aaand what was that video?! Awful.

Destiny's Child still have the ultimate anthem and girlband anthem and video for Charlie's Angels then oops.

This. Lana's talent shines through and completely overwhelms this undercooked song and blows the other two out of the water. Whoops! I suppose advertising Lana's talent, artistry and new album WASN'T the goal here? (Well, for everyone but Lana.)

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef 13th September 2019, 09:13 AM

I had to suffer the entire song just to get that great Lana bit sad.gif It reminds me of Posh in Headlines (Loud and True) (Telling You All) (Friendship Never Ends), omg Spices loves brackets, where Posh's bit sounds like it's from a different song as well laugh.gif

Whoops thought someone else had posted nvm.

Posted by: Medellíam 13th September 2019, 09:23 AM

I like the song but Lana's part is very jarring. It sounds like it's part of a different song and interrupts the energy. It's also strange seeing Lana as a 'pop girl'.

I'd have liked more Miley instead - her and Ariana sound great together.

Posted by: Jade 13th September 2019, 10:01 AM

A-Listed on Radio 1. 'boyfriend' has been swapped out on the playlist.

I wish Miley and Lana were given some like ad libs at the end.

Posted by: Frenchie 13th September 2019, 10:40 AM

The Miley section is my fave, she really goes for it. This will obviously debut high but can't see it lasting long and becoming a huge hit.

Posted by: LMLou 13th September 2019, 10:48 AM

This is so good! The most instant Ariana hit for me since NTLTC, just wish Miley and Lana had a little more cause they suit the sound of the track a lot better

Posted by: LewisGT 13th September 2019, 10:51 AM

I really like it on first listen but it's the least instant Ariana song for a while for me. Sounds like a grower.

I like Lana's part but it does feel like it's from a different song.

i’m enjoying the song + the video. i love that it’s an eclectic mix of women because that’s who charlie’s angels are so it fits with that vibe. lana’s section on the song + her solo parts in the video are incredible but i think she looks really uncomfortable when she’s in the trio sections of the video. miley + ari are absolute powerhouses so they know how to play up to a pop video which means that, while lana’s delivery isn’t necessarily pedestrian, she just looks out of sorts.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 13th September 2019, 11:27 AM

It’s Arianas most instant single since breathin for me.

It probably helps I’m fans of all 3 people on the track too laugh.gif

She is uncomfortable, but that just helps her channel Posh Spice even more!

36% lead on UK iTunes, I’m sure they will manage to get a 60%+ lead which should guarantee a top 3 debut. I just wish the Spotify support was more.

It will be #1 on USA iTunes in next 20/25 minutes too

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 13th September 2019, 12:17 PM

I was preparing to be disappointed, but I think this is actually a really solid effort!

I disagree that Ariana sounds bored though, I think she's been guilty of sounding more bored than this in her recent work but she serves on this.

Posted by: Jade 13th September 2019, 12:30 PM

I really like Ariana on the song too! I've seen 'autopilot' comments elsewhere on the internet but I think her vocals sound dreamy.

Heard this for the first time on the radio already during my lunch break *.* Lana's part definitely stuck out like a sore thumb blasting in the car laugh.gif

Posted by: Wall 13th September 2019, 01:04 PM

It was originally an Ariana and Lana duet

Posted by: Jade 13th September 2019, 01:12 PM

Interesting! As much as I stan both Ariana and Lana, I'm glad Miley was a part of it too. Her verse really gets me feeling hyped.

I know I said this was instant but it's getting better and better throughout the day nevertheless. I love it. I hope it will have a strong chance of getting to #1 here!

Posted by: JosephStyles 13th September 2019, 01:17 PM

I quite liked it on first play but each subsequent listen has made me love it more and more. So so good! I kinda get the Mother's Daughter comparisons though personally I find it a lot better than that.

That was my issue too, she just doesn't seem comfortable playing up to the pop star role.

Posted by: Bré 13th September 2019, 03:01 PM

I think Miley actually outperformed Ari and Lana on this which I can't say I was expecting at all...!

I like this quite a bit on first listen, the only thing dragging it down a little bit is Ari's verse which I thought was a bit eh but even that is carried nicely enough by the bouncy instrumental. I do like Ari more on the chorus, Miley killed it and Lana's part works surprisingly well (although I was slightly disappointed the production changed for her part, I was looking forward to seeing how she'd sound over it laugh.gif but the transition to and from her part is smooth enough for it to work for me).

Posted by: kye 13th September 2019, 03:07 PM

just watched the video (again) + think it’s hilarious that they spend 3:30 singing don’t call me angel, elizabeth banks walks in and what’s the first thing she calls them? angels.

Strange because it sounds like a Miley song more than anything else! Agreeing with the comparison to 'Mother's Daughter' (although I like it more than that).

This comes up on my Spotify homepage with 'Don't Call Me Angel' as the first track. Get that promo!

Posted by: Liаm 13th September 2019, 04:14 PM

Not that I don't like Mother's Daughter, but this is basically what that should have been - love! I actually think Ari is the weakest oops, not that I dislike her bit but Lana works surprisingly well and Miley KILLS it.

lana's verse gives me goodbumpssss

Posted by: Atonement 13th September 2019, 04:26 PM

I really dislike the Lana part. It interrupts the song, which isn't that great to begin with. I love Lana but while the song was playing I was hoping for a full on pop verse from her for once. Instead the instrumental stopped and she... does her usual shtick. Very disappointing.

I like the instrumental and also the chorus but I feel the song needs more punch as a whole. I agree with whoever said that Miley is outshining the others.

Posted by: blacksquare 13th September 2019, 04:31 PM

Anyone expecting Lana to serve anything but a Heidi Range middle 8 were setting themselves up for disappointment

Miley completely owns her verse — I would have quite liked her to have the second verse as well with Ariana on the chorus

i'm surprised it's not credited as ari feat. the others cos she basically owns the whole thing tbh

Yeah I would have liked Miley on the second verse and keep Ariana to the chorus. Basically this should be a Miley lead song.

I actually love the Heidi middle 8s lol.

Posted by: Wall 13th September 2019, 05:09 PM

It was originally meant to be Miley’s lead but I’m guessing she changed ideas due to the amount of Ariana and Ariana wouldn’t take less due to it being on her soundtrack?

The video has 10 million views so it should debut on around 20 million views in 24 hours which helps them push for #1 *.*

Posted by: Medellíam 13th September 2019, 05:14 PM

On second listen, Lana's part flows better. I think it helps that I didn't listen with the video this time - I think Lana's awkwardness in the video reflected on the song.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 13th September 2019, 05:32 PM

It feels more like a Miley track although I’ve since read the collaboration originally was Ariana and Lana and Miley was the last to record their part in the track.

I'm pretty happy with the song! Definitely a cooler cousin of Bang Bang and I wish Miley and Lana weren't just boxed into their verse and bridge. The instrumental is the catchiest bit of this lol that is STUCK in my head even from the 7 second clip we got earlier this week. Glad this is looking to do well in first week! It's hard not to find it all a little undercooked

Was gonna post my thoughts here but I'd pretty much just be echoing this! Ariana's part and the chorus really lack both the anger of Miley and the sultriness of Lana. It's not too bad and may grow on future listens, but it's a lot more meek than it should've been.

I felt like it would be sacrilegious to say that I feel that both Miley & Lana outshine Ariana on this track, but having read through the thread it seems a few others agree. Don't get me wrong, she sounds great! However, Miley really attacks her verse (perfect description from Jade!), while Lana's bridge is just... *chef's kiss* wub.gif While I understand the criticism that Lana's section sounds like it could belong to a different song, I actually like that change of pace... it adds another layer, some drama.

I enjoyed the video. Although again, I feel like Miley & Lana's set ups were more interesting than Ariana's. kink.gif

The thing that's really baffling is that the movie isn't released until last week of Nov! So it'll be hard to keep the hype of the movie up for that long.

Posted by: Jack 16th September 2019, 02:22 PM

Yeah, I think they released it too early maybe. A couple of weeks before would've been better!

Posted by: blacksquare 16th September 2019, 02:50 PM

Maybe she's releasing another single in November?

Isn't she co-producing the soundtrack album?

Posted by: 365 16th September 2019, 03:11 PM

Yeah, if this is the main single for the movie, it is a little odd, as the movie opening week would have given it a huge boost. So many soundtrack songs peaked in the movie release week. They should have released it 3 weeks before the movie.

Posted by: dandy* 16th September 2019, 06:55 PM

Although if I didn't know beforehand who it was, I'd have thought it was a Britney track!

They should’ve pushed it closer to when the film was released.

Miley and Lana also have singles of their own out too as well as Ariana so it would’ve worked in favour of everyone.

Posted by: Jack 19th September 2019, 12:58 PM

I don't think it's anything to do with song quality or anything like that, it's just pop females aren't doing well chart wise. Even Taylor hadn't done that well lately - the last three/four months have been absolutely tragic and amongst the worst I've ever witnessed chartwise.

You are someone who's very introspective and nostalgic, and you'd love to spend all your days lost deep in thought. You're prone to bouts of melancholy and moodiness, but you embrace these emotions as being part of the full spectrum of ~life~. As a result, you have a unique way of seeing life that most people don't totally understand but still enormously admire.

Goals tbh.

Posted by: Jonjo 28th September 2019, 08:56 PM

I low-key think everyone is doing a bit much on this laugh.gif It's a soundtrack single. They rarely ever get off to as good a start as this track did no matter who is a part of it, and it doesn't help that the film isn't released until mid-late Nov, so promo for the movie won't be until later. Then we have the Capital support being extremely low considering who is involved etc...

I'm just so happy it's delivered, on a personal note. If it can recover in the charts, bonus. But if it doesn't, it's really not the be all and end all of it. At least it's doing better than Dua's Swan Song did and she is somewhere between Ariana & Miley in terms of chart popularity atm.

EDIT: This is mainly from topics I've seen around the forum! laugh.gif

Did anyone post this yet? Found on youtube - prefer this arrangement tbh

Finally! I've been waiting for someone to do it in this order since the first day! I think this flows a lot better too!

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef 29th September 2019, 12:26 PM

Why is no one talking about how the instrumental sounds like clown music?

I also prefer it, seems smoother.

Down to #52 in the US this week, potentially the biggest chart disappointment of the year in terms of the US?

Billboard Hot 100 predictions:

#43 Don’t Call Me Angel (-30)

And I (major) OOP

So it was -39 in the end!!!!!

Posted by: Wall 1st October 2019, 06:48 PM

It’s #80 on USA iTunes.

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef 1st October 2019, 08:18 PM

Dee doo doo doo dee dee deee!

I knew this would happen the second I heard the clown music in the teaser. This is a stain on Lana's discography.

Posted by: 365 2nd October 2019, 01:46 PM

This got old really fast for me I have to admit I didn't listen much after the first 3 days. It's all a little lazy.

Posted by: Mikal 2nd October 2019, 01:49 PM

Yeah this did as well as it deserved to. It was clearly an Ariana leftover they just remastered and added 2 verses. Poor.

Posted by: Jade 4th October 2019, 05:13 PM

Spends a third week in the UK top 20 at #18 this week. 6 place drop not quite as harsh as the previous week.

Posted by: Wall 5th October 2019, 12:40 AM

I legit still love this sad.gif

Posted by: Juliano 5th October 2019, 11:53 AM

You know what, it isn't performing as badly as I feared. happy.gif

Posted by: TheJüpreme 5th October 2019, 02:45 PM

This was such a disappointing collab.

Posted by: Jade 12th October 2019, 04:13 PM

Down to #21 on its fourth week. Once again a lot more positive than the US chart situation kink.gif

Surely the film will help this out though I hope so anyways.

It’s hard selling a movie track with the movie still not being released.

Posted by: Jade 13th October 2019, 08:56 PM

SIMGM what a throwback *.*

Yeah hopefully the film release / soundtrack streams will help it out a bit.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 14th October 2019, 11:04 AM

What's the US chart run of this so far?

Posted by: kye 14th October 2019, 11:23 AM

i don’t understand why they released this so much earlier than the films release date.
i mean, unless it’s an actual musical, the soundtrack doesn’t give anything from the film away so doesn’t build much hype?

That really is a complete belly-flop.

Posted by: Euphorique 14th October 2019, 03:35 PM

She needs to go away for a while, I feel like she's suffering from overexposure. Also the material hasn't been up to par lately.

Posted by: Wall 17th October 2019, 05:42 PM

All my fav songs of 2019 are flopping. I’m a curse.

Nah. It's him. He needs to remove "of 2019" from his post tbh.

Posted by: Bloodjerdling 18th October 2019, 09:05 PM

Just small falls this week - down 3 places to #24 in the UK and 4 places to #75 in the US.

Not too much longer until the soundtrack now!

Posted by: Wall 18th October 2019, 09:38 PM

I don’t understand why capital snubbed this though

But yeah, Capital snubbing this completely is hella bizarre! :\

Posted by: Bloodjerdling 25th October 2019, 03:32 PM

Removed from the Radio 1 playlist now. In slightly more positive news it only slides 2 places to #26 in the UK chart this week.

Posted by: Bloodjerdling 1st November 2019, 09:04 PM

This is coming to the end of its chart life unless there's a boost from the soundtrack - down to #39 in the U.K. this week oops + both this and 'boyfriend' are in the 90s area of the Billboard Hot 100 (the latter started dropping like a brick over the past few weeks too sad.gif)

in better news, at least it hit 100 million views on YouTube x

Posted by: Slade 28th December 2019, 12:47 AM

Got an email saying that my 'Don't Call Me Angel' vinyl has shipped! A bit earlier than I was expecting. Now a race to see if this or 'boyfriend' arrives first :')

Posted by: Jade 10th January 2020, 09:29 PM

Picture disc arrived! cheer.gif

Posted by: Jade 13th September 2020, 11:24 AM

Already a year since this was released!

Posted by: Wall 13th September 2020, 11:31 AM

This truly deserved better. I’ll never understand why it performed in the way that it did on radio and chart positions.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 13th September 2020, 12:17 PM

This feels like it happened more than a year ago, I suppose that's because it was over so quickly and has been long forgotten.

Posted by: LewisGT 14th September 2020, 03:39 PM

If this was released a year yesterday then that means it's a year tomorrow since my SWT tour date. That's been an unbelievably quick year. ohmy.gif

Certainly not her best song anyway. I haven't gone back to it much at all this year.

Posted by: Klumzee 14th September 2020, 04:08 PM

I still think this got way more hate than it should have! It's maybe not the life-defining song that it could have been from these three artists but it was still a good catchy soundtrack song and I'm not sure why it fell so quickly! This song was much more popular than the film it came from so that's at least a positive for it? I know lots said they didn't like the 'clown instrumental' but I think that's what makes it stand out and gives the song an edge. Lana's verse still serves *.*

Posted by: Wall 18th October 2020, 03:13 PM

Posted by: JulianNial 18th October 2020, 06:17 PM

This song is truly one of the most underrated songs of each artists discography, it still goes off. I’ll never understand why it had such horrendous Airplay worldwide
