In the run-up to Christmas I will be posting Charts of the Christmas Past and giving my thoughts.
Day 1: 1999 Now this is quite a poor year for the big chart contenders. On one end we have two awful cover versions from Westlife, who already had three chart toppers that year and were aiming for a fourth one. The other, Cliff Richard with his dreadful Christmas/New Year single which had been number one for three weeks previous. In the end though it was the lesser of two evils as 'I Have A Dream/Seasons In The Sun' became the fourth number one for Westlife and their first Christmas number one. At number three a re-issue for 'Imagine' by John Lennon which was previously #1 following his death in 1980. I'm not sure why it was re-issued but it may have had something to do with the end of the millennium. At least that is probably the reason for Europe's appearance at #39 with 'The Final Countdown' and Prince's appearance at #51 with '1999'. Whatever it was, it is my favourite song in the top five with its lyrics still resonating today. Also worth noting are the two novelty entries in the chart, 'Cognoscenti Vs Intelligentsia' at #4 for Cuban Boys which is more well known as being the 'hamster dance' song, an early example of a viral internet sensation. And at #8 a Christmas classic (not really) 'Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo'. Yes people actually bought a single by an animated singing poo. The song originated on one of my favourite TV shows 'South Park' back in its infancy. Two childhood fave groups in S Club 7 and Steps enter at #5 and #7, both with double A-sides which seemed to be quite popular back then especially for pop acts. The only song I actually remember from this lot though is 'Better The Devil You Know', which Kylie does better anyway. And lastly a shout out to garage classic 'A Little Bit Of Luck' entering at #18 for DJ Luck & MC Neat which would climb in the new year to #9. William Orbit is the standout from that top 10, and I also like John Lennon and Artful Dodger/Craig David.

William Orbit is definitely the high point in that top 10, some other good songs though and these are the best ones...

Yeah, William Orbit's a clear highlight here, one of the best trance tunes ever
 Oh dear tho, things must be bad when Mr Hankey, the Christmas Poo is actually one of the best songs in that top 10 non ironically lmao  I have always quite liked that Westlife cover tho for my sins, makes me feel Christmassy. |

Thanks for doing these Dan! Surprised there's no commentary on William Orbit, I know your a huge dance fan. One of the best dance tracks of all time for me.
Distinct lack of Christmas tracks but Tom and Cherys version of Baby it's Cold Outside is the most common current version of the track still in 2017! Anyone know how Imagine sold so much then - was it playlisted by radio? |

The Aled Jones report mentioned it was the first time it was available on CD as a single, but it being released in time for the Christmas chart makes me think there was some sort of get it to #1 campaign going on. Also here's where I mention that while both are great, I prefer the Tiësto version of 'Adagio For Strings' to William Orbit's. Thought that might be a minority opinion on Buzzjack, the Tiësto version is held in higher regard in the EDM community (and has actually sold more copies despite a much lower peak thanks to good download sales). |

Day 2: 1997
We now go back to the year I was born, where Spice Girls were campaigning for their second consecutive Christmas Number One which they easily got. In my opinion though the song is really boring and one of their worst, it seems all very hype over substance in this case and even then, this didn't sell as much in its first week as others by them. I would honestly prefer the Teletubbies, who were the previous week's #1 and dropped to #2. It's awful and barely qualifies as a song, but is still more entertaining than 'Too Much'. I suppose most of the sales here were parents buying it for their kids although it wouldn't surprise me if people also bought it just for the lolz. At number three is the awful charity single 'Perfect Day', it's even worse than most other charity singles with the screeching in it. Outside of the top three it just looks like an ordinary chart with big hits of the year lingering, though we also have a token charity release this year from Chicken Shed entering at #15 which is apparently a British theatre company. It is as cliched as it sounds. And one place above Vanilla with 'No Way No Way' which is infamous for being so laughably terrible so no wonder people bought it in Christmas week. Rapper Mase has a top 10 new entry with a non-event song and a few other new entries further down include Paul McCartney's failed attempt at another hit at Christmas. That 97 top 10 had 6 eventual million sellers in it. Sales were at a massive peak that year.

iconic track (although not as good as 'Chocolate Salty Balls' of course - hard to believe that South Park spawned not one but two actual UK top 10 singles, I guess the closest thing to that happening again recently was Family Guy popularising 'Surfin' Bird' and inspiring the Xmas #1 campaign for it, unless I'm forgetting any other obvious examples of hit singles from cartoons).I didn't realise how old 'A Little Bit Of Luck' was, always thought it was from the mid early 00s

5,6,7,8- the debut Steps single on that Christmas chart had already sold 130K at that point and moved 18-22-23-{17}-20-20, it would re-peak at #14 in January 1998 and go on to spend 14 weeks in the Top 40 in total.

Day 3: 2005
Now back to 2005 which is a special Christmas chart for being the first to feature an X-Factor winner at number one, it also had the biggest first week sales of any with nearly a whopping three quarters of a million being sold. Honestly I don't think it's worth that much but it is one of the better winning singles even if only for it being an original song, although it was shockingly a Westlife reject as it was apparently even too cheesy for them (speaking of which they are also here at #4 with a boring forgettable song which is what you'd expect from them). It also gave us the iconic Ablisa moment a few years later in the X-Factor auditions (they sang the song terribly and then ended up fighting each other). There really was no contest as Nizlopi, the previous week's #1, came nowhere close, thankfully anyway because that song is seriously awful and I know I'm in the minority here. I don't get it. The best song in the entire top 10 though is the seasonal classic that is 'Fairytale Of New York' re-released officially in aid of the investigation into Kirsty MacColl's accidental death. It has re-entered the top 40 every year since but has got no higher than #3 in the 21st century which is where it charted this year. Eminem also enters at #5 with 'When I'm Gone', an emotional song about him considering leaving the rap game (he didn't in the end) and raising his daughter - fitting for this time of the year. Another great song entering the top 10 is Coldplay's 'Talk' at #10, clearly the Christmas rush didn't stop these artists from releasing new singles. 'Talk' seems rather forgotten now sadly as it is one of their best of the 00s. Other than The Pogues, my favourite in the top 10 is 'Hung Up' from Madonna which was a former #1. Girls Aloud's attempt at a Christmas number one (clearly considering the winter themed video) was a 'See the Day' cover which fell a bit flat at #9, like most of their ballads it isn't that great - they do uptempo much better. Embarrassingly it got outsold by Crazy Frog's Christmas effort 'Jingle Bells' which falls a place to #6. I love 'Axel F' but at this point the joke was wearing thin and this won't be going on my Christmas playlist. As always there are a few charity songs making entries. The EP 'George Best - A Tribute' enters at #21 based on just sales from Northern Ireland apparently, which climbs into the top five when released nationwide. It's a nice sentiment as a tribute to 59-year old football player Best but quite a boring cover of 'You Raise Me Up' and I won't be listening to the rest of the EP. Choirboys get their cover of 'Tears In Heaven' to #22, it's sweet but really not the type of music I'm into. One of the members Patrick Aspbury died at the age of 23 earlier this year which makes this even more sad of a listen. Dance and borderline novelty hit 'I Like Girls' by Hound Dogs brings the tempo back up as a new entry at #26. From a quick listen it sounds like something Snakey would love, yes it is funky house.  Shame this wasn't bigger, though it at least got five weeks in the top 40 which is good for a #26 hit. And of course we had to have a Christmas version of 'Amarillo' in 2005, and at #30 is '(Is This The Way To) Santa's Grotto' which is credited to Santa himself. I never knew this existed but I'm glad I do now. *__*Finally at #32 a new entry for Mary J Bilge with 'Be Without You', a song I thought was bigger though it appears it was one of those songs that peaked low and spent a while in the chart, only 3 weeks top 40 but 23 weeks top 100. Not a song I've heard in a long while, but I do quite like it. Also worth mentioning is a rare appearance of a new Christmas song in the top 40, 'Under the Tree' by Waterbabies which climbs to #27 is an original Christmas song from that year but hasn't been heard much of since.
