BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Spotify Chart Thread [January 2019]

Posted by: Dappy New Year 31st December 2018, 11:06 PM

Happy New Year! cheer.gif

This is the Spotify chart thread for January 2019, the go-to topic for UK Spotify chart discussion! We should expect Ava Max to remain at #1 to be the year's first Spotify #1 though she is still close with Ariana Grande. We could see a big artist drop a surprise release this month too (is it too much to ask for a surprise Rihanna album drop?) who could shake up the charts too, otherwise we'll be stuck with the 2018 carry-overs for the time being.

FAQs

What is streaming?

For streaming related FAQs read http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=213186.

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. The desktop top 50 may update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date. However recently it has been known to not to do (even when the website has), so do check all sources. Also note that the Spotify Website will update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars). Occasionally there will be a delay in the Spotify chart updating which could even take days.

Useful links:

https://spotifycharts.com/regional/gb/daily/latest [top 200]

https://www.spotontrack.com/charts/daily/streams/gb/2018-04-30 [top 200]

How often does the chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although this is not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes the top 200 on the website will update but without the top 50 on the app updating, and sometimes there will be no update at all.

How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. (Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 600 times if you really want to).

The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=202072. For information on what songs are currently on ACR and what songs will be moving to ACR, refer to http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=215253.

How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole, although good paid-for sales are still essential for making the very top of the chart in most cases. Spotify counts for at least half of all streaming sales (probably, we can't actually be sure on that), so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.

Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?

Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist.

Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped artists/releases such as Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/Drake who will of course enter straight at the top.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

wish HH updated, has been the same for the last 3 weeks with only a subtle mini reshuffle last week

Posted by: luzbeki 2nd January 2019, 11:58 AM

It’s just been updated. Baby is up to #17 which is a virtual miracle considering how poorly it’s been supported by Spotify. But it reflects where it’s at in the midweeks.

Will that boost its streams significantly? Actually now think there’s a chance it goes Top 10 this month after all.

Gotta say with 'Baby Shark', it's not for everyone (it's not even for me) but it's pretty avant-garde in terms of chart music.

Posted by: Dappy New Year 2nd January 2019, 12:59 PM

It's nothing more than the modern equivalent of Bob The Builder/Teletubbies which were big songs about 20 years ago, really. Silly kids song which got very popular for being silly and catchy.

Posted by: TheGrinch 2nd January 2019, 01:13 PM

It's disappointing to see Mark and Miley struggling so much on Spotify, I'm guessing #3 will be it's overall peak which is a good result but at the same time a little bit disappointing considering the incredible start it made in the charts. Hopefully it will move up on playlists and go back top 5 on Spotify next week.

*.* seriously hoping Zara can continue climbing and manage to snatch top 10 this week.

It’s going to chart around #16 tomorrow. I figure it now has two weeks to either go Top 10, or never make it. Radio support can’t last too much longer.

I’d love Marina to get her first Top 10!

Play is absolutely AWFUL. Horrific doesn’t cover it.

It should smash though as they have the Hots Hits Cover, Vertical video right at the top and song #11.

Posted by: Joeflake 3rd January 2019, 02:47 PM

Yeah, Play is kind of really bland.

Posted by: mdh 3rd January 2019, 02:49 PM

"Play" is essentially just Jax on auto-pilot, it's a shame because he used to be so consistent.

Posted by: danuary 3rd January 2019, 02:57 PM

Play is far from awful but it's his weakest single so far, it feels like he's losing his magic. Though it'd be impossible to better the perfection that is You Don't Know Me anyhow, he did follow that up with two other 10/10 songs.

Posted by: Brι 3rd January 2019, 03:07 PM

I actually really like 'Play', here for it to finally give Y&Y another big hit that I actually enjoy. Think it's probably my 2nd fave Jax Jones single after 'Breathe'.

Posted by: ElectroBoy 3rd January 2019, 03:46 PM

Play is fantastic; excellent to see it continuing to climb.

Top 10 please heart.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 3rd January 2019, 03:57 PM

I feel like he set the bar so high with 'You Don't Know Me', 'Instruction' and 'Breathe' that he can't quite match it with 'Play' but it's still an anthem and better than a lot of stuff around right now.

I'm just glad it's not another 'Ring Ring', I don't quite know where he went so badly wrong with that one.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 3rd January 2019, 04:00 PM

Play isn't my favourite from Jax, but not my least favourite either. Glad to see Y&Y getting another hit.

I'd rank his 'Snacks' tracks:

1. Breathe
2. House Work
3. Play
4. You Don't Know Me
5. Instruction
6. Ring Ring

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 3rd January 2019, 04:18 PM

Shout out for 'Yeah Yeah Yeah' as well, because that is an absolute tune. wub.gif

Posted by: Cqmerqn 3rd January 2019, 04:20 PM

1. You Don't Know Me

2. Breathe
3. Ring Ring
4. Instruction
5. House Work

6. Play

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 3rd January 2019, 05:14 PM

As there isn't much releasing tonight, it could help Fleur if she is near the top of NMF.

Also, the new BMTH single is amazing! It's their poppiest song ever, but it's really good.

Posted by: Bjork 3rd January 2019, 09:13 PM

Play is ok, not on the same level of amazingness as Breathe
but on par with You Don't Know Me and Instruction
his only mis-fire has been Ring ring, a 0/10 song :/

Yeah she was dropped in october 2017 , although the dig about ex contestants ending up in the jungle he made on thr final pretty much confirmed it

Posted by: danuary 4th January 2019, 11:31 AM

What are we predicting then for the NMF effect?

'18HUNNA' is most likely a top 40 because of Dave's involvement. Chris Brown and Bring Me The Horizon should make top 100 (despite Chris being fairly low down). Fleur might go top 200 if she's lucky.

Pretty much all of his releases after First Time are mid-low top 20 worthy hits tbh, they’re extremely Spotify & Radio friendly but not enough to be easy too 10s. Happy Now could be an easy top 5 hit if it was given the proper support tho

Wasn't expecting '18HUNNA' to debut that high even with Dave being on it, but I guess he is that big now that he can send anything high on Spotify. Looks like 'I Found You' will return to the official top 40 now this new Miguel version is out too, presuming that they will be combined, which is good to see. I don't expect we'll see Fleur East stay in the top 200 as her NMF placement has no doubt helped her a lot here, and BMTH will fall a fair bit too as the fanbase effect wears off. Chris Brown should be able to climb though. Also looks like 'Options' will be the next random British rap hit to make the UK top 40 too as that's climbing rather quickly. Good to see Jax Jones get a new peak as well, thanks to Hot Hits UK most likely, and also CamelPhat re-entering!

The top 10 debut for '18HUNNA' at least isn't as out of the blue as 'Funky Friday' going straight in at #1 laugh.gif Dave's name obviously now having a lot of power, plus still a very low bar for the top 10 and it was the first track on NMF.

Only possibility is the week when Sweet But Psycho starts with ACR which is not happening just yet.

Posted by: danuary 6th January 2019, 11:01 AM

Ava will have at least another 2 weeks at #1 I think, and she should be able to avoid ACR this week as she's still gaining on Spotify week-on-week.

I can't see 'Wow.' going to #1, our next #1 will probably come from Calvin Harris depending on what the song sounds like.

That's looking like an obvious #1 to me whatever the track sounds like, unless Sam Smith has a say in it biggrin.gif . Saying that its going to be a great chart battle between them since they collaborated with each other on Promises.

Also I wanted Mark and Miley to get there, its not really happening, its a bit too late now.

just watched a very interesting program on MTV about the most surprising flops in the UK in the last couple years
they mentioned Echame la Culpa (Fonsi and Demi), which flopped cos it was in Spanish
Taylor's End Game and Delicate
Kygo, with a bunch of singles, they played Stargazing, which I thought was very good
Troye & Ariana - Dance to this, which flopped despite having Ariana
Lauv & Julia Michaels, they also explained they're together as a couple, which I didn't know
Lorde - Homemade Dynamite

crazy that Lorde flopped when they released a new single mix featuring Post Malone, Khalid and SZA. With such 3 artists featured, it's incredible that it still flopped so bad. Guess the title maybe?

Posted by: Cqmerqn 6th January 2019, 12:03 PM

IIRC, Lorde was the biggest out of all those artists at the time of the release so maybe that’s why it never really took off?

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 6th January 2019, 12:05 PM

It was released in September 2017, so just when Rockstar was taking off.

IIRC, Lorde was the biggest out of all those artists at the time of the release so maybe that’s why it never really took off?

Yeah timing was the worst thing for Homemade Dynamite. It was supposed to be a single earlier in the year but they canceled it and pushed Perfect Places instead bc of the Manchester attacks. Then it was given a single mix about two months earler than it should have done - since just a few weeks later Rockstar, Silence, and Young Dumb & Broke would all be big hits that definitely would have guaranteed at least another top 40 hit for Lorde.

It’s a huge shame really because if that had become a hit they probably would have pushed Sober or something afterwards

It was released in September 2017, so just when Rockstar was taking off.

Khalid and SZA were barely known in the UK at the time too, and Post Malone wasn't quite big enough to have anything with his name on it make the top 40.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 6th January 2019, 12:52 PM

Yeh Homemade Dynamite was meant to follow Greenlight but had to be cancelled due to sensitivity over the Manchester Attacks from what I remember, although perfect Places was better for me, it just never took off.

Bring Me The Horizon update: Medicine is down to #88.

Medicine [so far] = 35-88
Mantra = 169-50-75-67-107-129-99-101-100-109 ...

Probably too early to say, but looks like Medicine will be having a quicker fall than Mantra did.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 6th January 2019, 01:25 PM

Mantra was released on a Tuesday, then had the NMF on Friday which helped keep it up. It was also added to HHUK fairly quickly as well.

Posted by: danuary 6th January 2019, 01:27 PM

'medicine' also had a quicker drop-off in sales, it's not just the position.

'medicine' 131,427 -> 75,781
'MANTRA' 115,701 -> 85,554

Medicine also had the NMF effect which is probably why it peaked higher than Mantra. I think the HHUK playlisting for Mantra was key to its relative stability afterwards, Medicine could disappear fairly quickly if it isn't put on one of the major playlists.

(or maybe it's just that people are realising Medicine is nowhere near as good as Mantra! biggrin.gif)

Headie & Dave holding up well, an official top 10 position seems likely at this point. As I predicted yesterday Chris Brown is climbing, and the song sounds like a hit so I'm sure it'll be top 50 before long. Hot Hits proving to be beneficial for Lewis Capaldi clearly, I expect 'Grace' will enter the official top 40 this week quite easily. As should 'Saturday Nights' (and 'Options' too, especially as it's top 20 on Apple Music).

OMG are they actually going to make a song like the Count Your Blessings era?! This album's gonna have EVERYTHING in it if so!
I swear Medicine is the first BMTH single I've actually found to be disappointing though.

'Homemade Dynamite' was definitely timed badly (and the remix wasn't really any better/much different than the original despite the name power) but it deserved so much better anyway, my 2nd fave song on 'Melodrama' </3

I don't think it would have made much of a difference, both of them were already big when it was released, and even today not every song they feature on becomes a hit. Homemade Dynamite's remix came out at the same time as when Post Malone's old songs were all getting big surges on Spotify, so really it was good timing in that respect, but Homemade Dynamite didn't really benefit like all the other Post Malone songs, which I thought was strange at the time. Even his flop song with Justin Bieber and album tracks got a surge in streams and his songs like White Iverson, Go Flex, Candy Paint and others charting high on Spotify despite being old and previously "flopping". And this was all before Rockstar came out by the way, I think because of Congratulations his past discography started getting a lot of attention.

Some people seem to think that Post Malone as an artist became big because of Rockstar, but given the data we have from streaming it was clearly the opposite. Rockstar was so successful because Post Malone as an artist had become big, and he was already big when Homemade Dynamite's remix was out. I think any song he released in place of Rockstar would have been successful at that time.

I guess Khalid is more debatable, but he was certainly known at the time as well.

Spotify Daily Chart Update (07/01)

Headie One gets a new peak, looks like this track is here to stay for now at least and will definitely be a UK top 10 hit. NSG enter the top 40 and Flipp Dinero enters the top 50 for the first time to fill the 'random rappers' quota whilst Chris Brown keeps climbing with 'Undecided' and A Boogie Wit da Hoodie's 3 tracks all reach new peaks too. More excitingly FISHER also has a new peak today. It's also finally time for Tom Grennan to reach the top 100 (I did predict this song would peak this year) and Lewis Capaldi keeps climbing too.

I actually wouldn't mind 'Fire On Fire' becoming a hit, it's surprisingly good. Best thing Sam has put out as lead artist since his debut I think! (Fully expecting that it'll never properly take off and he'll instead get a huge hit with something returning to his usual intolerable blandness).

He is releasing a duet with Normani on Friday so I think that will get the radio support and high chart position whilst Fire On Fire is just a minor top 40 hit at best depending on how well the film does.

Posted by: Brι 9th January 2019, 05:56 PM

'Watership Down' isn't a film, it was just a miniseries that was broadcast before Christmas. I presumed the song wouldn't really take off much as it was just a throwaway for that but you never know if it's still climbing Spotify ~

Spotify Daily Chart Update (09/01)

This is the first time Catfish and the Bottlemen have been in the Spotify top 50, I was expecting a climb into top 50 but I'm surprised they're big enough to get to #11. New Billie Eilish enters quite low but it's only a soundtrack single.

the Billie Eilish newie is not from the movie itself
was inspired by the movie, she watched the movie and was moved to write the song

it's one of the lines that grab you from the movie, theres this little boy that says
"when I was older, I was a sailor", which actually makes no sense

it's a good song but theres way too much auto-tune

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 10th January 2019, 01:31 PM

Go on Catfish! pleasantly surprised how big they've become in the last few years.

Posted by: Bjork 10th January 2019, 01:37 PM

I think it's good they took time off to make the new album

the two Lewis Capaldi tracks climbing nicely, but I think they should focus on Grace now
Grace is on HH but Someone You Loves is high on Todays Top Hits and Pop Rising

That goes for anyone who releases on a Thursday though, how do they normally do it?

Posted by: Bjork 10th January 2019, 02:34 PM

I'd assume they use a formula based on weekly patterns over the last year or something
For what I see, Thu streams are pretty similar to Wed streams, just a little bit lower
so it wouldn't surprise me if the estimation of Thu streams is just x% of Wed streams

That's all well and good but how do you estimate the streams for a song which has only become available on a Thursday?

You don't. Any song that gets released on a Thursday like the Westlife one today will have zero streams counted for the week.

#50 is the Spotify peak so this is the closest it’s been to matching that. If it were moved up 5/6 places on hot hits it has a chance at cracking the top 50 again, and then rising and making gains ... but I doubt they will so I think the song has peaked now.

Posted by: danuary 10th January 2019, 03:20 PM

Electric has 132,319 streams in total at the moment, the most of any of her songs. Will have to check back tomorrow to see how many streams it actually gets from the playlist.

I love the thought of loads of people shuffling this playlist today. Some brilliantly obscure choices/forgotten hits from LSL, Mel B, Shaznay, Mark Owen, Abs and Gary Barlow (albeit with his best solo single by far).

Catfish And The Bottlemen's first album refused to leave the chart for years so it seemed like they were overdue a song doing decently well on streaming (a la Arctic Monkeys) - can't say I've found any of their previous material particularly interesting so hopefully I'll like this new one a bit more ~

New Music Friday - I assume Calvin will be added when it's out:

1. Lana Del Rey - hope is a dangerous thing...
2. Billie Ellish - When I Was Older
3. Catfish and the Bottlemen - Longshot
4. SOAK - Knock Me Off My Feet
5. Tom Walker - Just You and I
6. Rudumental ft. RAY BLK & Stefflon Don - Scared of Love
7. Lauren Lauregui - More Than That
8. Westlife - Hello My Life
9. Joe Goddard - Jack Come Back
10. Example - All Night

So I have a question. As Thursdays streams are estimated they wont obviously estimate more than the handful of streams it usually gets for the chart but for certifications and overall sales do they get the actual figure just a day later?

I was expecting Calvin to be ahead of Sam on the NMF playlist

Posted by: danuary 11th January 2019, 12:17 PM

Calvin and Sam are seemingly as big as each other at the moment so I wouldn't have been surprised at either one being song #1. Judging by iTunes the Sam track seems to be bigger anyhow and I expect it will be a future #1 (if it isn't #1 this week).

I'm going to predict for tomorrow's update:

Top 10 - Sam Smith/Normani
Top 20 - Calvin Harris/Rag'n'Bone Man
Top 40 - Catfish and the Bottlemen
Top 40 - Gessaffelstein/The Weeknd
Top 100 - Billie Eilish
Top 100 - Lana Del Rey
Top 200 - Tom Walker
Top 200 - Westlife

I don't they so. Their streaming figures won't be high enough to challenge for #1. They're currently Top 100 on Apple Music but that won't be enough. I'm predicting Top 200 for them on Spotify tomorrow considering their NMF placement.

I imagine that indie streamers would listen to a wider range of artists, therefore finding one that a lot of them would listen to at the same time is rather rare. That said, I would never have expected Catfish to be the act that unites them.

Spotify Daily Chart Update (10/01)

New Billie Eilish song has dropped out already surprisingly so I'll revise my prediction for her to top 100 from NMF. Westlife seemingly have enough hype to get a top 200 debut without NMF anyway so maybe top 100 tomorrow.

FAQs

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Why would 449,736 people stream Sweet but Psycho in one day??

Is it UK only or worldwide streams? Are they unique somehow? Can we simply divide by 500 and estimate the streaming points for the chart?

Posted by: Klaus 11th January 2019, 01:55 PM

It’s the number of streams not the number of individual accounts

Posted by: Bjork 11th January 2019, 01:55 PM

Sweet but Psycho got 449,736 streams yesterday in the UK, doesn't equal 449K people cos some could have streamed it more than once
Streaming points are hard to estimate cos it depends if people are premium or gratis, it's not straightforward to calculate

the chart would definitely be more interesting if it was measured by the number of Individual people streaming rather than how many times people keep listening to the same songs on repeat.

I don't think people listening to a song more than once is necessarily the main problem with streaming.

NMF -> New Music Friday

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 11th January 2019, 03:36 PM

Basically lots of people stream the NMF playlist (or get inspiration from it) on Friday so the higher up it you are, the more people will see and therefore stream it.

Someone You Loved is top 20 on iTunes though, strike while the iron's hot. Grace was doing well but it's been removed from Radio 1 now and the time has passed really. Someone You Loved was always going to blow it out of the water imo.

Posted by: Defaze 11th January 2019, 07:00 PM

I much prefer 'Grace' but I suppose it makes sense to switch it out in favour of his current single. Although saying that, I really don't see why they couldn't have kept both. laugh.gif

Similar to Dave and Post Malone's trajectory I guess... they've been gradually growing in popularity between their last era and now. It's great to see, though, would absolutely love for "Longshot" to be a long-lasting UK hit!

Well surely it makes sense for Dave and Post Malone, we've seen that sort of sound gaining a lot in recent years. Catfish are indie-rock, that's what's so strange about this!

A few others lower down as people have already pointed out, though no-one gave a mention to this week's token no-name rapper (Aitch 'Wait' enters at #170) and Tom Walker's new song enters at #187.

I'd say it's the opposite, some very few indie acts think outside the box and be successful like Radiohead
most indie bands repeat their formula to infinity and beyond releasing the same album again and again cos fans buy it anyway (Oasis, Muse etc)

Muse?? Same every time? Try telling me Simulation Theory and Drones (or especially Origin of Symmetry but I was going with a more recent example) are the same album!

Good to see some new 2019 music doing well this week as the chart will hopefully be freshened up. Seems that people are taking to the new Sam/Normani track in comparison to the CalMan one - always thought Calvins singles opened with big streaming figures but maybe not.

Westlife doing very well to rise today to 75, maybe not do so bad on streaming. Also fantastic to see Longshot rise into the top 10 which is quite a shock to me too. Think people are forgetting it's a fantastic song too pure and simple.

Promises only entered at #14 so Giant entering at #9 is very impressive. And I think Sam Smith being a bigger name than Rag'n'Bone Man, plus him having the #1 song on NMF is helping him over Calvin.

Posted by: Steve201 12th January 2019, 02:34 PM

Yeh, thought he entered a lot higher usually. Sams ahead of Calvin on downloads too - think Sam/Normani is hitting the public more - both look set to get huge airplay anyway!

Posted by: Bjork 12th January 2019, 02:46 PM

Sam is not hitting the public more, Sam has a deal with Spotify and he's always promoted like hell, he's super high on all playlists already

As is Calvin though!

Spotify playlists positioning is t EVERYTHING - the song still must be appealing!! It's like getting guaranteed Capital and radio 1 A listing doesn't mean ALWAYS a high chart position.

I'd say it's the opposite, some very few indie acts think outside the box and be successful like Radiohead
most indie bands repeat their formula to infinity and beyond releasing the same album again and again cos fans buy it anyway (Oasis, Muse etc)

You can't tell me Radiohead haven't followed a similar formula for decades laugh.gif I mean I like them and everything, but I don't understand why their fans praise them like they're Gods - most of their most popular songs aren't too far detatched from generic 2000's indie rock.

amazed anyone can enjoy the Weekend track after paying attention to the lyrics
they are gross and misogynist
his first singles were very over-sexualised too but this feels like a parody of himself and an attempt to be controversial without any substance
the music is also utterly boring and same his being doing on autopilot since Starboy

I've been a fan of The Weeknd since 2011 and the whole point of his music back then was that it was hazy and depraved. No one listens to "Glass Table Girls" and holds him up as a role model. Either way not everyone listens to music hoping to get their mother Helen Lovejoy's approval that they're disowning all the scary evil men and their scary evil music. But if you want to go there, that awful Juice WRLD song that everyone seems to be okay with is far more misogynistic.

The real problem is that the song is so bland for Gesaffelstein and The Weeknd.

If more indie songs were added to playlists to HHUK like Catfish has, indie would be making the charts more, probably.

It's good to see there will be an indie hit in the official top 40 on Friday though, even though having listened to it, I am not a huge fan of 'Longshot', having liked 'Kathleen' back in the day.

I don’t condone the lyrics either but just to play devil’s advocate, there are trillions of songs in the world and the lyrics are probably a dime a dozen. And if we’re gonna analyze every single lyric, do you know people could listen to the verses of Sweet But Psycho and think “oh so you won’t consent YET but I’ll f*ck with your mind until you do”? I’m not going against everyone bc I love the song and I’m pretty sure Ava herself doesn’t condone sex without consent, but I’m just saying “what if?”

There are songs that try to convey a specific motif and The Weeknd’s just happens to be the equivalent of someone who has risen to fame and fortune and is lost in the euphoria of it all: smoking weed, doing drugs, and having mindless sex with their groupies. And that’s something that’s fairly common in music. It’s what people thought rockstars did back in the day. Do these people believe that any of this stuff is good for them? Who knows? It’s just a motif.

This could end up being a really good discussion point because of the controversy that it caused, or this could go downhill for me and my reputation as a whole, but it’s something to think about. Does he really believe these things should be glorified, or are we only starting controversy to earn woke brownie points?

Posted by: Brett-Butler 14th January 2019, 09:08 PM

I'm probably one of the less "woke" people on this board, and even I was quite shocked by the lyrics in "Lost In The Fire" - the 2nd verse appear to be condoning "corrective rape", which is one of the vilest things that one can do to a woman. I'm not sure whether this is really the Weeknd's own thoughts, or if this song is like Eminem's 'Slim Shady' character, who purposely says horrible and terrible things, and is not a person that one should emulate or relate. Either way, I would imagine that the controversy won't be swept under the carpet, and I have a feeling that if the song does get played regularly on commercial radio, they'll either censor the 2nd verse or remove it entirely.

I don't like the song, either musicially or lyrically anyway, so I have no intention of willingly listening to it again.

Posted by: Cody Underwood 14th January 2019, 09:16 PM

Yeah personally I’d like a radio edit. Helps smooth things over and makes it more marketable.

I’m just gonna leave it at that.

Yeah I get what you mean completely. Art is often performative but there is often an element of insidious mentality that can creep through if it's left unchecked. Like I don't think it's particularly a surprise that when, not the genres as a whole, but a noted popular subset of hip hop & country music can be so objectifying to women, and unsurprisingly very few women can crack the mainstream in those genres because the hive mind as a whole find it weird or unnatural to hear that music from women.

I mainly just found this whole situation curious as an 'oh, I guess if you'd never heard of The Weeknd prior to "Love Me Harder" or "Earned It" maybe this would seem strange, but honestly he's been just as depraved since back when nobody knew who he was or what he looked like (or that he was even one person). I suppose there's something to be said of the song going severely out there to shock. Can only wonder how long it'll take until Spotify back away from it.

I posit though that there's something to be said of collective reactions being just as insidious. Like people pile up these individual incidents and use it to make any sort of excuse to not challenge their pre-conceptions. When that goes unchallenged, you get ugly sweeping gestures that become normalised, and it just piles on more segregation of music audiences, and more bafflement of what 'those' artists and 'those' listeners are condoning.

Posted by: SKOB 15th January 2019, 10:36 AM

It's not a defense that "he's been doing that since xx" I mean, if he keeps on performing lyrics like that year after year, he must really consider it as an asset even though it's same old same old? The public perspective evolves and he doesn't, simple as that. No way it's working for him, most likely against.

Posted by: Dircadirca 15th January 2019, 11:09 AM

I'm not really defending the lyrics as what they are, which is pretty tired from my perspective (and the kind of homophobic line is pretty bad), but the reason I spoke up in the first place was the outrage that people could listen to something so...outrageous. It never feels right to me when people put people up to their own arbitrary standards of what is okay to passively listen to, be it circumstances surrounding the song or the artist themselves.

NSG still climbing incredibly quickly, could see this one becoming a top 10 hit. And fully in support of this. cool.gif x

That Khalid song is incredibly bland, a bit salty that it's going to comfortably outpeak 'Suncity' now.

It’s the next single, isn’t it? I’d like to see Suncity eventually get that level of treatment but it’s a nice enough song.

Posted by: Brι 15th January 2019, 11:15 PM

Yeah it is. I can see why it's being pushed over 'Suncity' (which did really well to even get as high as #41 from the EP streams) as that doesn't exactly scream commercial success but it's still disappointing. Might end up growing on me I guess, I did think 'Better' was a nothing of a song the first time I heard it as well (although not to the same extent) and I've ended up sort of kind of liking that one...

I still don't expect 'Old Friend' to do anything, it's only in the middle of the playlist which won't be enough to push it into the chart, there's a few other songs in the same position at the moment which aren't in the top 200 (Picture This 'One Drink', Clean Bandit 'Mama', Peter Manos 'In My Head', Dermott Kennedy 'Power Over Me')

James Blake feat Metro Boomin & Travis Scott. James also has the cover picture.

Surprised it's him over Ariana but Polydor must have made a deal with Spotify before her song was announced.

'Poppiholla' is a TUNE and I've not heard it in ages. 'Rapture' reminds me of childhood; I love the Avicii mix from a few years back too but the original needs more recognition.

10 week #1?

Posted by: danuary 19th January 2019, 09:24 AM

I can't see it spending that long there. Obviously first week streams will be huge but something else will eventually overtake in a month.

Posted by: Steve201 19th January 2019, 09:51 AM

This reminds me of Gods Plan this time last year!

Posted by: Mart!n 19th January 2019, 10:08 AM

I can't see it lasting 10 weeks, yes it will sell in its first week, the week after probably will lose half of its sales. I'm just worried if Ariana releases more music the public might start losing interest (like churning a new track every couple of weeks), not that they will. - No need to bite my head off tongue.gif

And if Drake dropped a single now or in a fortnight's time, that could scuffle Ariana's run at the top, if the track is actually quite good. You really can't tell what could crawl out of the woodwork

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 19th January 2019, 10:17 AM

I'm pretty sure people said 'Thank U, Next' would decline quickly after its initial big numbers and it didn't.

Posted by: danuary 19th January 2019, 10:32 AM

But it didn't last 9-10 weeks at #1 either.

Plus with the video being released already the song will be more front loaded as there won't be one week in the future where it gets a big boost from the video like 'thank u, next' did (edit: other than the album release week).

As for Martin's point, I think the album will come shortly and after one or two more singles she'll take a proper break.

Posted by: danuary 19th January 2019, 11:43 AM

Ava is doing just fine, she increased in streams yesterday, no doubt thanks to it being a Friday, but she's still close to her peak numbers wise (excluding her anomalously big NYE streams)

She also avoided ACR for the next 3 weeks if you're wondering.

Decent start for Mabel, hopefully a Top 40 debut is possible!

Posted by: danuary 19th January 2019, 11:54 AM

Neither are on ACR yet. Freya has another 3 weeks and Ari has at least this week though she could easily increase streams and avoid it.

She’s very likely to win that in my opinion so she could well perform they’re still announcing performers wouldn’t be shocked if they left her until last to be announced.

Posted by: Brι 19th January 2019, 01:32 PM

Well, that'll be Ariana very comfortably debuting at #1 and staying there for at least a good few weeks as if it wasn't already obvious!

A nice debut for James Blake, hopefully coming to finally give him a second top 40 hit. And also him giving ROSALΝA her first appearance in the UK Spotify top 200 <3

Really impressive start for Mabel there too, coming to be back on track after her last single flopped a bit?

Good start for James Blake there, didn't think he had a streaming audience although can't remember whether he did originally!

Posted by: danuary 19th January 2019, 03:04 PM

I think him having featured on a few rap songs recently has helped there ('King's Dead' particularly, that was fairly big), and of course the one that's top 40 is only there because of the Travis Scott feature.

His last album had a few songs from it make the Spotify 200 so he clearly does have a bit of a streaming audience anyway too.

Posted by: LewisGT 19th January 2019, 08:49 PM

I'm obviously delighted to see Ariana #1 although it was expected.

Great to see a solid dιbut for AJ Tracey too. Loving that tune.

Looks like Gun Lean is going to do an Airforce and make top 20 due to a remix.

Yes! glad Mabel has managed to stay top 50; was half expecting her to drop to well outside. Showing signs this could be a top 10 hit for her given the reception its getting is mostly positive

Solving problems that only exist because of the shit free version of their app. A very easy way to not support artists you don't want to hear - just don't listen to any of their songs, or skip them if they come up on a playlist tongue.gif

There's also the matter of for whatever reason not managing to skip them within 30 seconds, which happens a lot.

Mabel should be top 10 before long, and it looks like they're finally pushing a follow up to 'Youngblood' for 5SOS.

Posty coming to finally overtake Ava again for the first time since the first day it came out. Would have been #1 if it weren't for that meddling Ariana!!

This has to be one of the strongest top 3s on Spotify for a very long time for me though.

Wow. debuted on Christmas Eve with 405,559 streams. A month later it reaches a new high with 406,199 streams.

The actual follow-up Valentine came and went ages ago oops kink.gif Lie to Me is single 4 from the album!

The new 5sos with Julia Michels is pretty high on Todays Top Hits
Just needs the HH add now

5Sos are releasing a 2nd consecutive stupid choice of single. There’s songs on the album that would have ridden the wave of Youngblood and been a hit too. Oh well.

I think Lie to Me's a great choice of single but they should definitely have put out Talk Fast or Moving Along as the third single!

Ariana’s ‘Into You’ back in the top 200! ohmy.gif

Looks to me like Sam + Normani could maybe get top 2 officially in the next week or two?

Would love to see an artist like Mabel all of a sudden explode up to near Arianas streaming numbers, would make the chart more exciting!!

What are you talking about?

Is this because Westlife aren't really relevant anymore in the singles chart? Their single would have charted even lower if it weren't for the OCC's newest rules.

The singles charts has always been
ruled by young people, thats how it id

I think you’re just bitter cos Westlife, aka the sappiest band in the history
of music, is not @1? Thank God for that smile.gif
