"A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence" is a Swedish production which was released in my country one month ago. It was shown at the last Venice Film Festival and it won the biggest prize of the tournament which is "Gold Lion". I knew about this film was the award it has gotten in this festival and it certainly was the main reason we went to see. Usually the films which are distinguished in major film festivals worldwide, like Cannes, Venice or Berlin, are quite good and some of them end up to the Oscar's "Best Foreign Film" category. However, this does not mean that they are always great. There are a few films which are unacceptable and the most resounding case is "A Pigeon ...."
Honestly, I have never seen such a boring film in my life. The rhythms flowed so slowly that I thought time would freeze sometimes. The pale / elderly actors, the simple shots and the repetitive dialogues were elements only suitable for a particular audience. It has insipid script, boring interpretations and a sleepy, tired and slow progression. The only positive was the special direction of what makes it stands out from all the other movies I saw this year. However, the content seemed quite silly. Of course, there will be some who will praise it and some others that will overestimate it. However, this does not mean it is good. It is just that everyone feels things differently. The point is, do not pretend that you understand this film. I am pretty sure most viewers did not understand the essence of the film. Incidentally, in several places before you enter the movie theater, there were several articles, which were full of proposals which explain the meaning of the film. It was unbelievable the fact that we have to read a booklet to understand what the film trying to tell us by the screenwriter/director. Especially when the movie was totally nonsense. It's like you see a bizzare drawn picture from a child and asking with a serious tone "What exactly have you painted?" while knowing that the imagination of children is limitless. It is meant that every screenwriter/director must spoon-feed viewers at the beginning of the movie so that to get ready in the deep thoughts. Otherwise, you will wonder from the beginning to the end. When the movie finished and we looked back, the viewers all had a face of "What did we just watch?".
I don't excuse the award of the Venice Film Festival and I guess that better films were robbed by this monstrosity. It has received great rave reviews from the local culture lovers who judge the films and I feel that these people are cheating the world. What kind of word? All of them who were affected by the opinions of these "experts", as the room was full of people who are not much different from the temperament/style of those who read / follow these films, like hipsters. It has received a modest average score - for a film with such distinction - on IMDb and I hope the bad news to spread quickly to the potential victims, aka viewers, of this movie. It's definitely the most boring film of the year, yet the most annoying. No enemy deserves this bad film.
I really like Roy Andersson, so I will be watching this. The thing is, you have to know what to expect when you're about to watch one of his films. His directing and sense of humour are peculiar. A bit like Almodovar, but in a different way.
