Emma without probably doing so purposefully has a nice spread of streams from several tracks off My happy place. The Will Yound duet is included in This is Will Young playlist. Jay mentioned about Come away with me playlisting, 2 become 1 surely benefits from Robbie and Baby please don't stop is always high up on her top 10, on This is Emma Bunton and her own personal best of playlist.

11. 942,204 - Blame It on Me (Total Streams: 6,946,299)
12. 800,235 - Bridge Over Troubled Water [Various Artists] (Total Streams: 18,419,307)
13. 799,273 - I Know Him So Well (Total Streams: 4,559,013)
14. 770,841 - Look at Me (Total Streams: 4,268,932)
15. 759,527 - Stop Crying Your Heart Out [Various Artists] (Total Streams: 3,635,033)
16. 692,867 - Who I Am (Total Streams: 5,271,016)
17. 690,508 - AM Gold (Tobtok Remix) (Total Streams: 1,131,311)
18. 583,916 - Not Such an Innocent Girl (Total Streams: 3,024,937)
19. 520,814 - Overload (Total Streams: 3,206,007)
20. 472,135 - Lift Me Up (Total Streams: 2,448,883)

The fact that two "Various Artists" charity singles are this high up the count down says a lot about just how the low numbers are for their solo material overall. 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' is a #1 charity single for Grenfell, released 6 years ago, and yet here it is in 12th place! 800k streams in the past year makes up just 4.3% of its overall total. Geri Halliwell is a part of the artist line up, but if you listened to the track, you'd never know. 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out' involves Melanie C and was the Children in Need single of 2020. It peaked at #7 in the UK charts but spent just two weeks in the Top 100. Nevertheless it still lingers in Melanie C's "Popular Top 10" list on Spotify.

Melanie C achieved a Top 10 album in the UK in 2020, and some of the songs from it are still doing relatively great streaming numbers for her. 'Overload' isn't a single but was was given a stand alone release in advance of the album release. Remixes were commissioned, and it's the Todd Terry Remix that is the most streamed version - 363,622 of its 520,814 streams in 12 months (almost 70% contribution). It's the same situation for 'Blame It on Me', with the acoustic version contributing 640,085 streams to the overall yearly count of 942,204 - that's just under 68%. Again, that is the power of playlists! However it is the album version of 'Who I Am' that is the most streamed version of that song - almost 80% of its streams in the past year are via that version.

Melanie C hopped onto the Tobtok Remix of Train's 'AM Gold' in 2022. It was released in April of that year, just a month before I noted down all of the solo Spice play counts. At its peak it achieved 30,000+ streams in one week in August 2022. Support has dropped off, with it settling to around 3,000 streams a week. If I was to do this thread again in a year, then it would probably not be Top 40.

'Not Such an Innocent Girl' is Victoria's most streamed song. You'd think it should be 'Out of Your Mind', considering that it was a considerably larger hit at the time of their physical releases, but 'Not Such an Innocent Girl' has the edge due to being included on 'This Is Spice Girls'. That playlist does a lot of heavy lifting for many of the solo singles included on it. That includes the #153 smash that is Melanie C & Emma Bunton's cover of 'I Know Him So Well', which is impressively Melanie's 7th highest place in the count down.

Geri's 'Lift Me Up' and 'Look at Me' were big hits in 1999 (#1 and #2 respectively), but they're actually not on 'This Is Spice Girls'. Perhaps 'Look at Me' would be getting 1m+ streams a year if it was on there.

So we've almost made it to the Top 10! It includes 5 Melanie C songs, 3 Emma Bunton songs and 2 from Geri Halliwell. Any guesses which artist and song will be 10th?

^ Close!

09. 1,471,652 - What I Am (Total Streams: 6,124,984)
10. 1,355,536 - Northern Star (Total Streams: 6,952,002)

We've finally made it to the songs that have managed in excess of a million streams in a year! Starting us off is 'Northern Star', the second single from Melanie C's debut album of the same name. The single reached #4 in November 1999 and certified Silver. Also released in that same month/year, also certifying Silver, but peaking higher at #2 is... 'What I Am'! This was Emma's first single away from the Spice Girls. Almost 25% of its lifetime streams were achieved in the past 12 months alone.

06. 2,717,633 - First Day of My Life (Total Streams: 11,926,030)
07. 1,808,922 - Mi Chico Latino (Total Streams: 8,308,711)
08. 1,639,422 - Take My Breath Away (Total Streams: 6,346,344)

Starting with 'Take My Breath Away'. Annoyingly the single mix has never been available digitally - those streams are 100% from the album version.

'Take My Breath Away' peaked at #5 in 2001 and spent 4 weeks in the UK Top 40. It was the 151st best seller of that year with 77.2k sales. As of May 2020 it was the 18th best selling solo single with 90.3k sales.

The following list of singles all sold more copies in the UK than 'Take My Breath Away', yet were streamed less than it in the past year on Spotify:

UK Sales Totals in May 2020
Out of Your Mind (#2 - 406.3k sales)
Lift Me Up (#1 - 351.8k sales)
Look at Me (#2 - 332.5k sales)
Bag It Up (#1 - 266.5k sales)
What I Am (#2 - 232.1k sales)
I Want You Back (#1 - 230.1k sales)
Northern Star (#4 - 225.3k sales)
Feels So Good (#5 - 145.4k sales)
Tell Me (#4 - 110.6k sales)
Goin' Down (#4 - 97.2k sales)
Not Such an Innocent Girl (#6 - 90.9k sales)
Take My Breath Away (#5 - 90.3k)

Spotify Streams from May 2022 to May 2023
08. 1,639,422 - Take My Breath Away (Total Streams: 6,346,344)
09. 1,471,652 - What I Am (Total Streams: 6,124,984)
10. 1,355,536 - Northern Star (Total Streams: 6,952,002)
14. 770,841 - Look at Me (Total Streams: 4,268,932)
18. 583,916 - Not Such an Innocent Girl (Total Streams: 3,024,937)
20. 472,135 - Lift Me Up (Total Streams: 2,448,883)
27. 324,200 - I Want You Back (Total Streams: 2,294,023)
30. 283,043 - Out of Your Mind (Total Streams: 1,429,606)
31. 273,213 - Feels So Good (Total Streams: 1,610,606)
32. 270,309 - Bag It Up (Total Streams: 1,587,911)
41. 175,796 - Tell Me (Total Streams: 1,118,841)
48. 97,671 - Goin' Down (Total Streams: 726,432)

So what caused 'Take My Breath Away' to do so much better? Well the answer does seem to be "This Is Spice Girls", with it being placed 23rd out of 42 songs on that playlist - making it the 5th highest placed solo single. A curiousity is that Geri's 'Scream If You Wanna Go Faster' is 22nd place on that playlist (4th solo), yet its yearly streams were considerably lower than 'Take My Breath Away':

08. 1,639,422 - Take My Breath Away (Total Streams: 6,346,344)
22. 418,883 - Scream If You Wanna Go Faster (Total Streams: 2,687,218)

'Take My Breath Away' must be on some other playlists to give it such an edge? thinking.gif Or it's somehow a lot better remembered?

I wasn't expecting to write so much about that. kink.gif

'Mi Chico Latino' was Geri's first UK #1 and I'd argue that it's her most memorable of her original song #1s - and that does prove to be the case in this count down. Still, I think 1.8m in a year is a little on the low side for a UK #1 hit, even if it is 24 years old. I do wish that the playlisting was better for so many of these songs.

Melanie C's 'First Day of My Life' was a huge hit in numerous European countries in 2005 and 2006, and it's nice to see that it's still pretty well remembered with 2.7m streams in 12 months. It's one of just 7 songs in this count down that has been streamed over 10 million times on Spotify.

I guess this doesn't include the streams of its acoustic version...? Although it has limited availability on Spotify, it has achieved 160,000 lifetime streams.

Oops yes I overlooked that version being available in other countries unfortunately. There’s a couple of other greyed out mixes (both from Geri) that I only noticed after my calculations too, one was a Ride It remix, think the other was It’s Raining Men.

And then there's also Runaway (a Beautiful Intentions era B Side) and remixes & alternative / acoustic versions of Next Best Superstar, Better Alone, You'll Get Yours and The Moment You Believe that are currently only available in Central Europe. wink.gif

05. 5,251,803 - What Took You So Long? (Total Streams: 18,987,186)

Bunton's highest song in the count down is her #1 hit single 'What Took You So Long'! Topping the UK charts for a fortnight in April 2001, it's great to see that it still has a sizeable audience of listeners, 2 decades on. That 12 month total of 5.25m is 27% of its life time Spotify total, suggesting that the song is doing better on the platform than ever before. Let's get it certified GOLD, people! yahoo.gif

Not surprised. It still gets the occasional spin on the radio and is pleasantly bland.

Yeah it still gets a bit of radio play. Surprised it has done such a big chunk of its total streams this last year.

Gosh what an absolute BOP cheer.gif I'm glad it is an enduring hit for Emma in many ways and it is well remembered. It still plays on radio across Europe quite a bit, which is nice and it is always well received.

It is quite strange how little it sold back in the day in the UK considering its actual success... I know it was generally a hit and it got to #1 for two weeks so yeah I wish it would get to GOLD status at least as it deserves it cheer.gif

It doesn't seem that these songs were put onto Spotify!

Some strong songs in that B Sides and more list cheeseblock.png I guess it's not even on Melanie's radar that most of those songs could have better exposure on her page via a playlist.
