So Fortnight is set to be #1, will Taylor also have #2 and #3?

Hozier is still going strong so holding on to #2 is possible but we’ll see how Taylor tracks during the week

Posted by: Scene 20th April 2024, 01:54 PM

I can see Hozier heading towards a symmetrical chart run with 8-4-1-1-4 this week. Taylor’s definitely occupying the top 3.

Posted by: Dexton 20th April 2024, 02:05 PM

Fortnight staying the top track for a while is assumed, and I think the title track will also lead in front of the other album songs sales wise.

The next few aren't too far from each other though, we could have a few weeks of 3-out, 5-out, 3-x-7, etc. as different tracks overtake streaming but the OCC rules only allow the Top 3? laugh.gif

Posted by: Long Dong Silver 20th April 2024, 02:10 PM

It won't keep those numbers up to be able to do that.

Posted by: Brer 20th April 2024, 02:27 PM

I think Taylor likely has #1 in the bag now but getting the whole top 3 will be difficult with how well Hozier is still doing, she'd need to have 3 songs all having similar first week sales to 'Anti-Hero' - I think I'd predict her to get 1, 3 and 4 again.

Posted by: Liam sota 20th April 2024, 02:58 PM

Would say Sabrina has a good shot at 1 next week. This week aside from 1 is hard to tell it looks like a Taylor top 3 for sure

You really think Sabrina might overthrow Hozier in the next week?

Posted by: Davidson 20th April 2024, 05:22 PM

Yeah, with Taylor and the huge streams for Hozier, I think it’s looking like Sabrina is going to get a ‘Greedy’ type long running top 3 hit at best with ‘Espresso’.

Posted by: BellyClarkson 21st April 2024, 01:48 PM

I’m seeing Taylor as 1-3-4, definitely think Hozier will catch up on the other two tracks

Posted by: jojo89 21st April 2024, 04:48 PM

Taylor Swift is definitely scoring another chart double on Friday, with fortnight probably being her 4th UK number 1 song. Probably another two top 5 tracks for her on Friday aswell. Because of this cruel summer will exit the charts but hopefully will return if it’s still getting solid streaming numbers

They waited too long tbh. I feel like they should’ve done a Destiny’s Child/Cheryl and started solo careers while they were still active as a group. I don’t know if the interest is there for them individually anymore, it has been 13 years since they won X Factor!

Same for The Saturdays wasn't it? i think they never officially split just went on a break.

Would guess Benson is on DCL-2. Think the first week of decline might have been smaller than the market decline that week so it doesn’t count for ACR purposes

Camila Cabello is another one who started a solo career whilst still in the group as she had that hit song with Shawn Mendes whilst still in Fifth Harmony.

I always wondered why so many pop stars feel it's necessary to dramatically split from the group to do solo music. I think in a lot of cases it would be beneficial for everybody involved if they all stayed together and did solo music at the same time. The Black Eyed Peas dominated after Fergie and will.i.am's solo albums and they also got #1s with collaborations OMG and Gettin' Over You and still continuing as a group, none of that drama and I think it worked out really well. Like I think it's fair enough if Jesy Nelson wanted to solo tracks but I don't know why she had to leave the group to do that.

Isn’t this more than 30’s first update? 30 not ending up as the biggest debut of the decade would be crazy.

On the Monday mids '30' had sold just under 167k and that is with an extra day of sales. '30' finished with 261,856 at the end of its first week.

Crazy sales for Taylor! Obviously I knew it would sell bucketloads but wasn't expecting it to challenge the opening week sales of 30 ohmy.gif

Unlike Adele, Taylor's physicals will be very front-loaded after day 1 but hopefully she keeps doing well on streams

True, but a lot of sales from her store didn’t ship yet, at least not on Friday-Saturday that’s this number here we’re talking about.

Anyway… yeah, amazing. If not limit of songs we would have gotten to 300K but hopping to pass 30! The streaming numbers of 30 weren’t very impressive so that can be interesting.

TAYLOT SWIFT OFFICIALLY BIGGER THAN ADELE!!!!

It's good in a way, as it means our biggest artist is back to being a woman after years of cheesy fad and drake, but I just do not get the music. But again,, she is far more talented than cheesy fad or drake... and they were huge... but the new single and album are just boring and droning...

Also, Dua's new single is by far the best of the three and itl's theonly one that gets just a couple weeks top10!!! Unbelievable. BUT!! wait for Wrench Exit!!!

Laughing at the silliness of 75% of the forum thinking it would sell less than Midnights on the prediction poll, she’s since had the hype of the biggest tour of all time; The Eras Tour, two of the biggest songs of the decade (Anti Hero, Cruel Summer) since that album release, how on earth were people thinking it would under perform midnight or sell less than 200k?

I went really conservative of my 240K prediction because the forum had made me feel stupid for going with logic. Probably would have assumed quite a bit higher!

No, I said Drake is untalented, not Taylor, who writes her own songs. HOWEVER!!!! The music is just gettin worse and worse. Compsre this no.q to thr song that REALLY deserved it - Civil Wars' Safe and Soums, which did what this song does, but better. And Illusion is the best since Dance The Night!!!

Because her career has to peak at some point, she can't sustain this level of success indefinitely. I don't think it was an unreasonable assumption from 75% of the forum, but fair dos to her for continuing to grow, the woman is simply unstoppable. I would say that her next album won't achieve these numbers but the way things are going, who even knows any more!

The UK album chart only counts the 16 most streamed tracks - only 4 more than Adele's 30 has.

Did ‘Midnights’ really open with 205k? For some reason I always thought it was closer to 300k. (Like 260k-280k-ish kinda numbers) so to see this outdo ‘Midnights’ numbers outside of Quarter 4 is INSANE!

I don't even understand how an album can have 3q tracks. It leaves NO TIME to properly craft a good song, edit the kyrics, create compelling melodies etc. Shakespeare himself pnly wrote 120ish sonnets, because he qas constantly revising them

204K,
And like I said sold 64K since the first Midweeks, so if that will be the same it will be the same number as Adele but I think this one is more front-loaded or I don't know, the streams will be better so who knows.

Streaming is based on the average streams of the top 16 tracks averaged minus the top 2. An album could have 102 songs wouldn't give it more sales because it's got more songs

But then I though it's sales total today would be roughly it's final sales for the week so who knows.

Well for me as a new Taylor fan (Oct 2023) I looked at album sales before hand and noticed how low they was this year and i expected sales to be low for Taylor because people don't seem to be buying albums anymore, then 1 month after I said a low sale she realised albums with different tracks on and then brought out a double album. I am glad I was proven wrong but do I feel foolish for guessing low? No I don't.

I’m not surprised at the those sales, as already mentioned it’s going to be close to Adele for the total but I would bet it might just get past 30s first week sales. Even with the restrictions on the streaming side, I can’t remember an album having 30k at this point in the week, guessing divide did?

I tend to agree singles wise with what’s been said by a few with Hozier probably sneaking in at No2 or No3 come weeks end. Interesting it’s dropped off with streaming this week so much.

Agreed. The album sales you get once in a blue moon like Taylor this week are incredible to see but sadly she could be back at #1 in 5 weeks time with like 12k or something because of how dead the market is on a whole.

Tbh back when 30 had it’s opening week I thought that was the last time we’d ever see above 200k for a weekly sale, didn’t expect Taylor to do it twice since.

Incredible sales for Taylor! I haven't got round to listening to the album yet but what I've heard of it is pretty good (namely 'Fortnight' and 'Florida!!!'). I also do fear that Taylor may now block some reasonably big albums from the top in the weeks to come (I thinking 'Radical Optimism' will have to fight really hard to get that #1, potentially even Kings Of Leon's upcoming album)

Posted by: omrimayo 22nd April 2024, 07:06 PM

Happy for Fortnight, with huge numbers from Hozier she made it look so easy when we know it isn't. Really amazing.

Oh the meltdowns if Taylor beats Dua... would it be Taylor's 3rd week? I think it's unlikely that Dua isn't #1 but it's possible.

Posted by: Notorious D.O.T 22nd April 2024, 07:29 PM

Could be a close one. Midnights did 32k in Week 3 while Future Nostalgia opened with 34k for Dua in 2020.

Posted by: Liam sota 22nd April 2024, 08:07 PM

If this becomes a real possibility they should delay it a week

Posted by: spiceboy 22nd April 2024, 08:11 PM

Wow Taylor's success is phenomenal truly nobody else can touch her.

Also I am gobsmacked at Adele, Ed Sheeran and Oasis selling THOSE quantities in week 1 alone!!! I don't know how that passed me by or if I just forgot!?!?

15,000 were available in total - guessing the UK got about 5k of that?

I know the schedule is different this era but Future Nostalgia didn’t actually debut at #1! Dua’s a lot more of a consistent streamer / long running smash kind of act than a huge debut so it wouldn’t be *that* shocking if she didn’t get number one debut. We’ll see how the Taylor impact fares for weeks to come though I do think it’s possible had she went next week Taylor would still be number one with relative ease but Taylor’s week three could be closer.

Posted by: JosephBoone 22nd April 2024, 08:54 PM

Future Nostalgia *did* have a huge debut - 34,390, and less than 600 off #1 which was 5SOS in a very heated battle! Midnights was on 32,589 in week 3 so that could be an interesting battle.

Posted by: Liam sota 22nd April 2024, 09:13 PM

Hozier got his first US 1 today which is good because I can see Fortnite being 1 for awhile there but maybe not here

Posted by: Notorious D.O.T 22nd April 2024, 09:21 PM

Delighted Hozier managed to sneak in that transatlantic double before Billboard inevitably becomes one long Taylor Swift playlist.

More symmetry in the fact that Take Me To Church (sadly) stalled at #2 in both countries.

Posted by: rio309 22nd April 2024, 10:58 PM

What a bizarre albums top 10. The #1 selling 200k after 3 days in a climate where basically nothing ever sells over 100k anymore... and then almost every other album is a band from 20+ years ago 😅

Posted by: aron997 23rd April 2024, 07:26 AM

With 31 tracks of the digital version of Taylor’s album, I wonder whether it means average streams per track will be fewer than for other albums and so bring down her overall sale equivalents in the long run? Certainly her version of 1989 had a higher proportion of steams than this week’s release. Then again this is a brand new set of tracks so might be more likely to attract physical sales, esp in Week 1

Love her or hate her, Taylor's incredible numbers are really good for the music industry as a whole.

Pure sales yes, but there has been a lot discussion that huge artists like her get all the streaming money even from people who are not listening to them. For example this:

QUOTE
Spotify confirmed that it would stop paying royalties on songs that received fewer than 1,000 streams a year. The move quickly incited blowback. Amelia Fletcher, a competition professor and independent musician, slammed the changes as discriminatory and exploitative.

It’s important to note that Spotify, which is in the midst of a radical cost-cutting drive, won’t actually save any money from these changes. The group pays a percentage of its sales out to the music rightsholders, which is then divided up between artists based on their share of total listening. These changes are about how much money each artist gets from within that fixed pot.

The financial consequences will be more significant for the major labels, which will expect a windfall with more money going to a select group of blue-chip musicians. This comes after Universal Music in October warned that it would be introducing a “cost savings program” in 2024. Lay-offs are set to begin in the next few weeks, with a couple of hundred jobs expected to be cut globally, according to people familiar with the matter.

Wonder if Taylor's album will have the highest weekly physical sales since 2017 - currently these belong not to Adele, but to ABBA:

ABBA - Voyage – 182,567 physicals (of 203,909 total)
Adele - 30 – 176,421 physicals (of 261,856 total)

One of the reasons Adele's total was so much higher was her downloads of 41,246, almost as much as her streaming equivalent sales of 44,190. Taylor's streaming will be higher this week but her downloads won't be nearly as high, so if she gets close to 260k you'd think her physical sales would have a chance of beating ABBA's.

In its first week on sale, Ed's 2017 release ÷ logged 670,000 UK chart units; making the record the third fastest-seller in Official Chart history behind Adele's 25 (800,000) and Oasis's Be Here Now (696,000).

I think she's almost guarenteed to overtake Adele now? If you take into account the missing streams, she's likely on ~245-250k with 2 days left. She's been doing 10k+/day and I don't see that changing today/Thursday as her streams are still quite strong. She'll likely be somewhere on 265k-270k I would think?

I’m not convinced £3 would make that much of a difference? It’s not like it’s double the price of a normal CD.
