The whole Chemistry era was cursed from Day 1!

Considering all her lead singles had gone top 10 before and then 'On The Floor' of course picking back up again in 2011... This felt like a bit of a flop with 5 weeks top 40 and an #11 peak.

and since this didn't get posted here the inevitable mention of Spice Girls tongue.gif

Not in the U.K. but these Billboard Hot 100 peaks really surprised me:

Britney Spears - Me Against The Music (feat. Madonna) - #35
Christina Aguilera - Dirrty (feat. Redman) - #48
Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For? - #47

all of these eras recovered across the pond later on in the campaign though!

Not a complete flop per sé but Girls Aloud - 'Long Hot Summer' didn't get the Chemistry era off to the best start, their first single to miss the top 3/5, thankfully 'Biology' was a strong follow-up!

Not sure what happened with Gwen there but re: Britney I vaguely remember reading about a radio ban placed on her music by one of the biggest radio companies in the US (Clearchannel?) during much of her earlier career hence why the likes of Oops and Toxic only scraped top 10 and other hits such as MATM, Slave, Everytime etc failed to chart high. I think it must have been around Gimme More or Womanizer when it got lifted.

I think Gwen's song just came at a time when pop music of that type really did not do well in the US charts (sadly), especially as she wasn't an established solo act yet.

cannot be that cos single #2 went to #7, single #3 went to #1 the mega-pop Hollaback Girk
single #4 to #13, single #5 to #21, eben single #6 peaked at #49

Yes, but those two follow-up singles were arguably more US-friendly than the camp electro-dance-pop of WYWF at that time.

I'll never get over the disappointment I had when I heard this song for the first time. It didn't help when it was being hyped up beforehand as a "Spice Girls classic"... I've just relistened to it for the first time in years and years and... it's still shit. Mel C's parts are the only great parts (shock horror) - although I really love Mel B's harmonies (well that's in general tbh).

So disappointinggggg </3

Me too!! I remember it was already unlikely they’d get a #1 album with their GHs because of Spirit but I was so banking on them getting another top 2 hit… until I actually heard it! Didn’t it chart a couple weeks before its physical release and enter at like #20 to climb only to #11 a fortnight later? Mel B.png

It's like choosing between having your toenails individually pulled out or being waterboarded.

It's a shame they didn't record something worthwhile and seize what truly could have been a moment in pop history.

Right! So sad the broke their run of top 2/top 10 hits with such a dud. There must have been something in the vault far better.

Headlines is perfectly pleasant cry.gif Undeniably a flop by their standards, not a good lead single choice or a comeback after years away and out of place with the styles of 2007. But, yeaaars after the fact, I really don't think it's the sore thumb that it's made out to be... it feels comfortably at home amongst the ballads on the Greatest Hits album.
